She used to talk in interviews about her albums as a house that she built. She might add on an addition or do a remodel (1989) but it was still her house/home. Once they were sold to Scooter and they tried to keep her from performing her own songs, she no longer had a home. It is why she burns down a house on the screens in the Eras tour. A lot of people think she is burning down the Lover house, but the frame work of the house is all different. I think she burned down her old metaphorical album house in order to re-record and start over again.

If you want another Taylor/Scott Borchetta related video, I recommend her live performance of Better Man at the Bluebird from March 2018. I like the one on the channel Taylor Swift Evolution. Scott is IN THE AUDIENCE. She left Big Machine in November 2018, so that performance was during the time where she was probably trying to decide if she was going to have to split from them. There was some creative tension, and she just couldn’t see herself signing up for so many more albums of that. Also, Scott was talking about selling the label, therefore selling Taylor’s future to the highest bidder. I’m not sure about the timing of the writing of the song. It was originally released in 2017 by a country group called Little Big Town. Part of me wonders if she wrote it when she started having issues with Scott, but thinly disguised the issues in a love song. It being such a country song is also poetic because Taylor started having issues with her label when she started leaning towards pop. Dragging the man in the genre of his choice. *chef’s kiss*

Great reaction, the jewels she gave him were the albums that went gold, platinum, and diamond. Scott was like family. Aaron Dessner is from the band The National, he also has a twin that is in the band. Aaron does not sing, Taylor has used his composed music, and he is of course listed as a co-writer. Taylor got the contract she wanted and was given more freedom and the rights to her new music.

Like I usually say in my videos, it's all about Words & Music! There are plenty of songs that are just songs- you know, just dance and have fun the words are pretty meaningless, but the song is great in its own way. Taylor gives us so much more! Such poetry!! I'm still blown away by her use of phrasing, double meanings, word play, onomatopoeia, every possible way to make her point or to make us think. That's her superpower! Thank you, my friend! ❤️

Right again. This is about Big Machine and the sale of her masters. 💯 Scott B. Like you said they were family. But at the time (Scooter had a hand in it obviously but as you said this is mostly referring to Scott) of her sales she felt like they took her life that she worked so hard for to create. The songs, ALL the lyrics, the melodies. All of it. Hence the wake/funeral imagery. “You wear the same jewels that I gave you, as you bury me”. Referring to her first 6 albums as the jewels and what was stolen from her without her consent or power to intervene. The stolen lullabies are also a nod to all the songs she no longer owned after they sold her masters. Love your reactions as always. Glad to give helpful tidbits whenever I can 🫶

Big Machine wasn't even a record label when Taylor got with Scott. He was in the finishing stages of starting his label. She was his only client in the beginning. She took off very quickly in
music. She was a country artist back then. All of the big male acts had her for their opening acts on tour. She was very admired because she was a young female artist who was a songwriter and musician. Everyone also loved how confident and involved in her stage set up, outfits etc. They couldn't believe how such a young girl knew exactly what she wanted, took risks and would work non stop until she felt everything was exactly how she imagined it. She was 15, I think. Back then there weren't really any young female artists. Everyone embraced her. She was everyone's little sister. When planning her performances at the CMA's or her own concerts at 16, the person who designs the stage set designs, lighting all that kind of stuff. I forgot what they are called. He said in an interview that she just shows up on the first day of him working things out and brings an easel with posterboards of exactly how she wants everything to look. He said he thought, what is this child doing. Most of the big artists tell him what they want, he tells them what will work and won't and suggest something else if need be. He said Taylor was pretty persistent on exactly what she wanted. He had to explain why some things wouldn't work or weren't the best ideas. She listened very intently and took almost all of his advice but, a few things she wouldn't budge. She would come to see how things were going and study everybody's jobs to learn as much as she could very often. The guy was slightly irritated but was also super impressed that someone especially so young wanted to learn. He said he had never heard of her but knew she had what it took to make it, and she was definitely going to be a star. One of the guitars she plays on her Eras Tour right now is the same guitar she played at her first concert. Her parents hand glued hundreds of crystals on it and in slightly bigger crystals wrote 13 on it. Taylor's lucky number. During her Eras Tour, the one she is on now she plays it during her Fearless era. Each album is an era. She wears similar outfits during each era that she did for the original tour. Her new label is Republic Records. She wouldn't sign with any label that wouldn't give every artist on the label more royalties from Spotify or all streaming. I can't remember. She made the albums Folklore and Evermore during Covid and paid for everything herself. She didn't tell her label until a week before she released them. They are both completely different genres than she had ever done. She had only done one album with the label. Who the heck could get away with that? It worked out for her and the label, thank goodness! She has her own management and production companies. She has for over a decade. She is her own boss and her parents are #2. Her and her parents hand picked the rest of her team. Her P.R. person Tree Paine left her job in the music industry to start her own P.R. company. Guess who has been her only client for ten years? Sounds like Taylor encouraged her to start her own firm and pay her well enough to just have her as a client. Taylor's father was a bigwig at Merrill Lynch and her Mom was in charge of marketing before she retired when she had Taylor. I think they taught both of their children they can do anything they want if they work hard.

There were a couple artists signed to the label when she signed. But yeah, she was hands on from the start (started her own management team in '06 at 16) and the trajectory couldn't have been different.

Thank you so much, Amelia! I really appreciate the info and I have a little for you as well: LeAnn Rimes was 13 when she signed her first record deal (Taylor was 14). She didn't go through the turmoil that Taylor did though but Taylor's story is unique in several ways- a new start up label, how they took advantage of her and the sale to Scooter and how that all went down and how she rose above it to be even more successful than ever. Also, I think Taylor's parents raised her well and are incredibly supportive. Having that base is so important for a young artist and the fact that they are still there doing things for her speaks volumes. I love how she stands up for her convictions! She really gave it to Scooter by reclaiming her songs (jewels) and how her Christian values are always there to keep her grounded and philanthropic. I admire her for those things as well as her lyricism and musicianship. The other thing I love about reacting to her songs is meeting all the wonderful Swifties in these comment sections! All very kind and warm. I truly appreciate that. Much love to you, my friend! ❤️

I'll admit, when she 1st started, I was a bit dismissive. I wasn't in to that type of music, so I didn't really care. I assumed she was just another teeny bopper pop tart.
Now that *I* have mellowed out a bit, & *she* is a grownup, I really appreciate her! She is super talented, & quite frankly a song writing genius! Thank you!!!❤❤

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink 3 месяца назад +5

Similar experience... Although I'm not sure I ever thought of her as a pop tart 😂 way back when she starred in an episode of CSI that was FAR darker in content than I would have thought Swift would have been part of at that stage in her career. They featured the song You're Not Sorry at the end of the episode and I also remember being interested because it was far darker than the other songs I had vaguely heard from her at the time.
I was in my early 20s when she hit it big and also only peripherally exposed to her radio music that was really not my personal groove at the time (I still happily bopped to 22 getting ready with the gals before a night out though 😂)
In 2018 when Florence and the Machine (my favourite band still since the later 2000s) released their album High As Hope, I remember being really surprised when Florence Welch mentioned on the live streaming of the debut of the album (yes, I absolutely was awake and watching on the BBC Radio streaming app in real time for that and almost every other one if their album releases 😅), that Swift had inspired her a few years before to write more personally about herself. Florence said she might not have had the courage to write and release Hunger as a single if Swift hadn't inspired her.
So when the Miss Americana doc hit in... What... 2018/9? I watched that and then challenged myself to dive fully into the entire Lover album when it dropped in 2019....and I haven't looked back since 😂
I was WEEPING at about 6:40ish am on 19 April (that was the time difference on my end from when TTPD dropped at midnight in the US), when I heard Florida!!! for the first time and I have not listened to it ONCE since without getting full body chills, often still getting a lump in my throat 😂
In my very wildest dreams I couldn't have imagined that FATM and Taylor Swift would have worked SO WELL on a song together vocally, stylistically, vibe-wise, etc...
Now, I would pay BIG MONEY for them to do an entire consept album/project of any kind together 😍😍😍

To be fair, when she was starting out she was still learning and perfecting her craft. And she’s going to sing what a 16 year old will sing as a 16 year old. Then people get stuck in the mindset that she is still 16. When she mastered her craft now and slowly people start getting that ah-ha moment and say ok I get it.

Yeah, of course! I was dismissive because all I heard was the negative shit about her. When I watched an interview with Bruce Springsteen and he was asked about Taylor, he said how talented she was, but I couldn't tell if he was just being polite! I love watching an artist grow and evolve or, like with Bowie, morph into something else. I think she is sincere and a very gifted songwriter. The fact that a megastar can go out and perform playing guitar (acoustic no less!!) is so incredible! I hope she inspires Swifties everywhere to start learning how to play. Wouldn't that be wonderful? Thank you, my dear friend! ❤️

Aaron Dessner is the man on the guitar. He also has a brother who often works with him. It’s usually just Jack Antonoff (Lead singer of “The Bleachers”) and Aaron Dessner (from “The Nationals”).
Yes, she signed a 13 year contract with Scott Borchetta who really was like a 2nd father and his studio was another “home” for her.
The “jewels” that she gave him were her gold and platinum albums. He made MILLION$$$$ off of her. She wanted but her masters, and Scott knew that for sure. The fact he sold to Scooter Braun (who repped Kanye, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and many more). Kanye and Justin were so cruel to Taylor so she just couldn’t get past what he did to her. When she gets mad, she’s very productive. Songwriting is like therapy for her. You’ll see clips of her going in and out of the studio, and her face seems so much happier when she’s coming back out. Scott and Scooter never thought that she’d just re-make those albums and her fans don’t buy the regular version anymore. She’s made it clear that she’s the owner of “Taylor’s Version”, and it’s an unwritten agreement that we have with her to keep supporting TV’s; not Big Machine. I truly hope Scooter lost money from that deal and trying to make Taylor’s life so miserable.
Great reaction!! Thank you. It’s really fantastic when a reactor can understand what she’s saying in her lyrics. Some people don’t have the bandwidth to understand Taylor, so it’s beyond refreshing when someone like you really does! ❤🎉🫶🏼

Thank you so much! Do you remember when a cartoon character sees treasure and their eyes turn into dollar signs? That was Scott! 🤬13 yr contract!! A typical recording contract for a newcomer is a 1 or 2 album deal. If the company can't recoup their investment with the first album they will do a second. If the artist is succesful they will resign with a longer deal- maybe 5 more albums. He only saw the potential for making himself rich off her talent. I also hope Scooter lost money and will continue to as people learn of his greed. Big F to Big Machine!! Much love to you! ❤️❤️

Thank you for your great reaction to Taylor's beautiful song/video. That sigh at the end is heartbreaking. The saving grace for Taylor was that she wrote or co-wrote all of her songs and she had the publishing rights to them. She had her publishing rights deal with Sony before she signed with Big Machine and Sony looked out for her. After Scooter bought the rights to Taylor's music, Taylor refused to allow her (stolen) music to be used in commercials, TV shows, movies, games, etc. Every request was denied. After she recorded Taylor's Versions, she allowed Taylor's Versions to be used if she or her team found the projects worthy. Her brother, Austin, heads that for her now.

Yes you were correct, the man with the short dark hair is Jack Antonoff who has produced for Taylor since the 1989 album. He's also founded the band Bleachers. The man with the longer, lighter hair is Aaron Dessner. He's in the band The National which Taylor is apparently a big fan of, and they are now really tight collaborators. Great reaction Bill! Love seeing you watch Taylor content!🫶🏼✨ I would recommend her song “All to well” (10 minute version) That song is originally 5 minutes off her 4th studio album Red. It got leaked that the song ended up being 10 minutes but she had to break it down for the album. So she gave the fans what they wanted and released the full 10 minute song a few years ago!❤️

This is about a crazy 🤪 lady who commits suicide out of spite when her husband breaks up with her. Then haunts him as a literal ghost.
The husband is incredibly spineless, so immediately doubts himself rather than move on with his life.
I find the song funny. It is over the top and both lovers are terrible people, so you don't feel bad for them.
    ===================
This is likely a reference to the idea that paradigm-shifting information gained from psychic transmission cannot enter human consciousness:
And when you can't sleep at night (you hear my stolen lullabies)
Thus, she needs to have the information she wants him to know be hidden information. Which can be inferred but is not explicitly mentioned.
Kinda like how she is a crazy 🤪 lady who commits suicide out of spite when her husband breaks up with her is hidden information in My Tears Ricochet. Inferable, but not explicitly mentioned.
She is also not gifted at this, so she needs to steal the work of others, rather than invent her own messages with hidden information.
Presumably her spirit body for her ghost form disintegrates eventually and she is dragged into the arche-dream. Or has her soul claimed by the source of the Evermore for their nefarious intentions, using their ivy-like grip on her, as she presumably has no redeeming qualities.

So yes you are correct about Jack on piano. The other instrumentalist is Aaron Dessener (of the band The National) who she first brought on in the folklore era as another producer/collaborator. She has worked with him on every project and some of his own as well since. Jack has been around since the just before the 1989 era. Her and Jack worked on “Sweeter Than Fiction” in 2013 from the “One Chance” soundtrack. And they haven’t looked back since. All in all, the dynamic…trio haha

Also, thank you for shedding light on the Prince situation. He was one of the pioneers and very possibly an inspiration to Taylor. It's almost unfathomable that a label can own your handwriting, pictures, everything...it should have *never* been a thing.

If you never seen it check out the documentary Searching for Sugar Man from 2012 about Dearborn artist Sixto Rodriguez. A real eye opener to just how corrupt & cold the industry is towards artists. Sixto was an amazing human. ❤

Yes, Prince's story is one of the biggest because of how big he was and what he did to fight back. But there are many more stories of artists that were used and abused by these corporate thieves. I love Prince partly because of his fight like I love Taylor even more knowing what she went through and how she came out on top but I love these indie, unsigned artists who are shunning label deals for independence like Oliver Anthony, Tom MacDonald, Ren Gill to name a few. It must really annoy the suits that they can't get their greedy hands on these people. Good! 🤘

As Taylor would say: "I will never be the best singer in the world, I am a songwriter." And what a songwriter she is. Just listen to "All Too Well" 10 min version lyric video. She is one of the greatest poets of her generation, no question about it.

This is what people don't get: Being a great singer doesn't mean you can write, sell millions of albums and billions of streams. She doesn't have to be 'the greatest singer in the world', she's exactly who she is, and what she does is magic!❤️

This is a beautiful song. So proud of her as an artist, and as a celebrity she is really learning to manage her fame and use it to strengthen her instead of destroying her. You mention Jack Antonoff. He is the man with glasses playing piano in this video, and he is also a genius...his band Bleachers is (my opinion) this generation's E street band...scrappy, thoughtful, fun. Well worth a listen! New subscriber here. Thank you for taking the time to really read and absorb the lyrics. Taylor is such a beautiful writer. It’s where her legacy lies, I believe.
Edited to add: Prince really was a standout pioneer among a few from that same era who fought to take artists’ power back. Taylor has that same character, she loves the art for the sake of art and thus wants to do the hard work to help it at least try to maintain its integrity.

Thank you so much and welcome to the family, my fellow Swiftie! I love her poetry! I give credit to Taylor for making me better at thinking about poetry and analyzing the meanings and artistic flavors in the lyrics. I admire her fight like I admired Prince's. Who is on the side of the businesspeople? The 'suits'? They just see a way of getting rich off of someone else's talent and hard work. I'm on Taylor's side and will always stand for the artist! ❤️❤️

You’re right, this song is about Scott Borchetta, who discovered her as a teenager and started his label with her as his first and headlining act. He built the label on her success. And he was a father figure to her for a long time. After her 13 year contract ended she decided to sign with a different label but wanted the relationship to end amicably; Big Machine was for sale and she asked to buy back her masters, but the only deal Scott would make was another 13 year contract where for every new album she released she would have the opportunity to purchase one album’s masters. She felt deeply betrayed and hoped for a negotiation but then was surprised to learn after the fact that Scott had sold the masters to an investment group led by Scooter Braun, who she was not a fan of because of the way he treated artists he managed with whom she was acquainted. And then Scooter’s wife made a social media post accusing Taylor of lying about knowing about the sale because her father was a shareholder at Big Machine and had access to the shareholder call where it was announced, but the shareholders in those calls had to sign NDAs, and her father didn’t want to be in a position where he could know something he couldn’t tell Taylor, so he hadn’t been participating.
My favorite line is “I didn’t have it in myself to go with Grace, so the battleships will sink beneath the waves.” She’s saying “I’ll go down with this ship and I’ll take you with me.”
