    When I worked for GM, we had a customer complain about running out of gas frequently with his truck. He frequently went off road. He explained, you know when the gage reads E, then the fuel light comes on, and you keep driving, how are you supposed to know when to fill up? His theory, was once the light came on, you should still have enough fuel to get home from anywhere, get to work the next day, and be able to fill up on the way home. His solution, was to always carry a five gallon fuel can full. I had to bite my tongue, to not say, they call it an idiot light for a reason.

    Matt, I have visited Hurricane Utah with my wife a dozen times. We start in Detroit, 2,000 miles from Hurricane. We drive for 14 hours, 900 miles, with TWO stops because the car is out-of-gas. Our stops never ever take more than 10 minutes. We love the movement. We arrive late the second day. We have done 6 trips to Medford Oregon, 2,400 miles, 2 trips to Los Angles, 2,300 mi, all these arriving middle of third day. Phoenix, 2100 mile, 30 times, arriving the second day. Yellowstone, 1800 miles, 24 times. This one we always stop short, in Du Boise Wyo. That way we go over the mountain pass into Jackson Hole, with the rising Sun to our backs, and shining on the eastern face of the Teton Mountain range. Magnificent!

    heh reminds me of my dad about when to fuel up. He was a traveling salesman and going through Wyoming, Nebraska, Utah and Colorado. His rule was if it was less than half a tank fuel up cause out in some Parts of Wyoming and Nebraska (of course Utah) you won't see a gas station for a long time and don't want to get caught in blizzard with no fuel either and that was in the late 70's and 80's probably not as many gas stations. Always peace of mind of something you can control.

      I was out four wheeling in the soupy slop years ago. On my way back, a large tree had fell across the road. I had a couple of good chains, but I was concerned about getting stuck attempting to remove the tree. The other way out was much longer, and I wasn't sure I had enough fuel to get back to civilization. I hated that feeling so much that when I got back, I mounted two GI fuel cans.
      Ten gallons of gas will get me back from most places, and I have helped dozens of people in the years since then.
      I also keep a $100 bill in my air cleaner for emergency situations too. I don't want to get stranded somewhere and my debit card not work. The Boy Scout Moto has served me well!

    • @hackmattr
      @hackmattr 3 года назад

      Agreed. As much as I hate stopping to get gas, I've been on quite a few roads where you don't see civilization for a long time. Nothing quite like unbolting the driver seat and finding 5+yo FroYo crust, or lifting the console and unleashing a shower of maggot husks. Couple quickies: 1-Are you buying or fabricating the replacement back console bracket? 2-Crutchfield still sells the Metra double-DIN conversion face for the center dash, if deleting the radio you could put a double-DIN storage pocket there for stashing phones. These things are pretty short on such spaces.

      So, the main issue with the 4.0L and heat is the iron head+block combined with a closed deck design. The design is incredibly reliable mechanically but unfortunately absorbs a tremendous amount of heat then has a very poor way of disappating it. Modern inline 6 BMW engines have the same issue except they have rediculous sized radiators and intercooler but still run north of 280F.

      One time I was driving my Caterpillar service truck home, and I was 50 miles from fuel and on empty. I stopped at a rancher's place and asked him for 20 gallons of fuel.
