It almost makes sense to reinstate the infamous Turbo button where you set can a limited mode where you are really comfortable with the fan noise and then by the push of a button you can remove all those restriction and just let it gallop along as fast as it can, noise be damned.

      I was thinking this myself. I wonder if there’s a way you can set a lower hard cap for the temperature or something.

      It's already a bit sketchy to want to cool processors like this with coolers that are not at all built for that purpose.

    • @mahdixn
      @mahdixn Год назад +1

      @@tr4nnel752 what's sketchy is wanting to run CPUs at 95c, you should know that all that heat you're dissipating is wasted energy, power that goes from you wall, to your cpu, just to get dumped as heat. So unless you want to run your pc to also heat your house, I don't see the point.
      From my experience by undervolting a cpu, I manage to save 30-40% of the power consumption under load, and up to 80% when idle, while retaining 100% of the performance. My pc is extremely silent with a small cooler, and my electric bill goes way down. Once you hit a certain power, you only get diminishing returns, every percent of performance will cost you a lot of power.

    • @MrStoffzor
      @MrStoffzor Год назад +8

      The core temp is pretty much irrelevant for cooling dimensioning. What you need to look at is package power draw, as that is directly proportional to the amount of heat the CPU cooling solution will need to dissipate. A CPU running at 100W produces the same amount of heat whether it's at 60°C or 95°C core temp.

      All performance is relative and the testing here will show that accurately across CPUs as there is no GPU bottleneck. Whether a certain CPU can take more advantage of a new GPU is not really a thing when comparing perfomance. Of course you’d get more frames with a 4090, but youre not testing the CPU performance across CPUs anymore at that point - you need to learn how to separate variables. A 12900K will take just as much advantage of a 4090 as a new 7950X will.

    I see many people a bit confused with the high temperatures. those are not a bad thing per se. AMD just decided to basically let it run free and draw all the power it wants at stock settings. the 7950x is almost as fast as a 32core zen3 threadripper! but all that wattage on 2 small chiplets cant effectively be transfered onto your cooling solution, so it sits at 95° all day under full load. that is not a bad thing. it will do this 24/7 for years. however, it still stays extremely fast if you limit the power draw. for example, at around 70W power limit, it will be around as fast as a 5950X at stock settings. 70W can easily be dealt with in a small ITX build, like a DAN A4 with a Noctua l9a.
    and if you have a bigger case and nice cooling, just let it do its thing and set your fan curves accordingly. do not try to cool it below 95° (it will not work with air cooling). just set your max fan speed to a level you are comfortable with noise wise, and let the cpu do its thing.

Ars, for example, says that with the 7950X at "65W TDP" setting the chip pulls 89.8W and runs at 56.9C under load and achieve exceptional performance with similar results to the max TDP settings. What is interesting is the discrepancy in power consumption vs performance (that you get similar perf. regardless of the power consumption) and they recommend using the 65W TDP mode as a result.

    I am 100% waiting for the 3D vcache version of the chips before I consider upgrading, as I want to make a passive-only machine next. Energy prices are going up, my tolerance for hotbox rooms is getting lower, and I would like my noise floor to keep going down.
    The 3d vcache chips will give better performance even when configuring to sip, so it's basically essential before I consider a real upgrade, and even if I wanted peak gaming performance... 5800X3D proves it's worth the wait.

    Wouldn't the CPU heating up to 95 oC pretty much every time you boot up your pc be terrible for the life expectancy of the chip? Over the years the constant expanding and shrinking in response to the heat changes would kill the chip faster than if it was kept to a lower temp.

    Hey Optimum, Would you ever consider going through your davinci resolve settings / workflow? Cheers!

    4:45 You mention that the 7950X is more power efficient than previous generations, but you don't really explain how you arrived at that conclusion. GN said they were less efficient (7950X vs 5950X), and I think most of your results and power charts support that as well?

    Hey Optimum Tech, as an Australian where do you get your Founders Edition cards from? I much prefer the form factor and aesthetic over AIB cards and would happily pay to get these shipped from overseas.

    Will be interesting if we see a jump in fan speed tech now to compensate, if new fans will have the ability to run quiet and minimal load at much higher rpm to accommodate for new cpu and gpu workloads.

    95C sounds insane ... but then again the 12900k will often go up to 105C during stress tests. AMD still has some catching up to do there.
