I like shooting single stage we started that way befor BC/CC system came out acrylic enamel and urethane were the paints of the day back then i like to use a suction cup with a pressure pot gun. we would swap out the 2 quart pressure feed gun and screw it to a bottom cup ..what a combo we thought ..we were just messing around with the guns .but boy it laid tht paint down.....this FLG 5 kinda works the same way ,non hvlp really lays down the paint smooth..thts why i like it. i use it to clear also. no problems yet.
Fab video mate! Nice work!

One of the most helpful paint workshop videos I’ve seen. Many thanks! Would be good to see detailed masking up and painting the top half.
Thanks Paul this was some time ago lol but we have plenty more with masking included
Nice work!
+Velvethamma Thanks really appreciate the feedback mate

Tony dont worry about solid colour you do it great
thanks man just always had an arse with it lol
Great job !! I’m currently painting a Vw t25 camper in my driveway, you’ve inspired me oh and I’m using Vw Brilliant 2k orange and white cheers
Hi will and good luck with the project just be carefull though there are a lot of laws on painting
Nice work mate. You have the same way of thinking as me. I would opt for base and clear over single stage because of issues. I find the better quality single stage the better the job turns out. Ive had some good results with the mipa stuff. Keep up the good work :-)
+Spray Works thanks man and yeah I much prefer clear over base as you can just get that higher quality nice look to it with a lot more ease
Wow I'm restoring the exact same van! crossover with early front panel! You want to spray my one too when it's ready!? I've got to soda blast off 2 resprays before I can even get back to the original paint finish!
+Neal F wow lol been there mate and sounds like youve got a long way to go but worth it when you see them done , best thing mate if your interested in having myself paint it is to get in touch throughour facebook page , the links on the main channel page
Ive only just found this little jem of a vid....Now thats painting....Bloody fantastic...I know that the editing is a pain in the arse but Im loving it...Cheers. .Im trying to find a video on your wet on wet primer then direct base coat the next day but I cant find it...Dont worry , Im having a great time looking for it....cheers Tony
+Tosh twentythree (tosh 23) lol I don't have a dedicated section in a video to it mate but I will make one for you if you like the next time I do some wet on wet work
nah dont worry about it.....Are you nuts...Yes Yes Yes please...lol
Great video's Tony, I admire your passion & dedication.just wondered where are you based and how far in front are you booking jobs in?keep up the good work!Lee.
+shikehowson1 were working on about 2 months atm for large work at my own shop small jobs the next week as since leaving the shop I painted this at I now spray for a manufacturer and have a small shop of my own which I run the channel from
Hi Tony, love your video's. I build miniature landrovers and at the moment iv been using direct 2k gloss. Although I can get great results iv found that its impossible to blend in a small repair aree f iv missed an edge or go thru to primer at the flatting and buffing stage. Even tho I soft edge mask I always end up with a kind of halo. I do plan on changing to BC CC but just wondering if you can blow in on direct gloss or do you need to repaint the whole panel. Thanks Peter
you should never do a blow in to soft edge in my opinion mask a slightly
larger area than you need and bland out a touch and use fade out
thinner to melt old and new paint together once flat and polished it
should be good il see if i can do a video on it for you but there is one
on a smart repair that i did which should give you the idea
Hi Tony!
Watched this one twice! Nice job, again!
I've got a '76 bay westy myself that i need to repaint and do some bodywork on.
Can you remember how much paint you used on it?
Grtz
Randy
+Randy Daems on one of these in direct gloss is get 4 litres of colour for it to make sure you have more than enough
Hi Tony,
Great video loads of info, just wondering how much paint you used of each colour please???
Thanks kevin!
errrr no idea mate tbh lol was a while ago , id say probably 3 litres of each would do it fine though
Hi Tony,do you use an epoxy primer first before the high build primer ?....Many Thanks great vids 👍🏻
if it starts as a bare metal job then yes if not no
Great video mate some great advice also. Is there a rough price guide for all the work in this video.?
Thanks mikey and I’m afraid not mate the guide price on something like is is so far from one scale to another for depends what condition how much works I moved what the customer wants ect ect
@@TonysRefinishingTV just spoke on Facebook now mate keep you posted😎
hey Tony, how do you go about blending single stage colour? is it the same as Base/clear where you could use a fade out thinner etc? nice job by the way
+skunk465 hi yes you can do it the same as clear using blend out thinner but a good match is essential with blending 2k direct gloss
Just found your channel, instantly impressed👍, I'm planning on painting my camper 2k satin green, will it still be the same principle being satin?
Hiya buddy and welcome to the channel glad to have you with us mate , and yes aslong as you can get the green in 2k satin mate , gloss satin and Matt are all pretty much applied the same as the base type of paints the same they just have matting agents added to the satin and Matt ones buddy but make sure you get 2k satin paint and remember you can’t flat and polish it or anything
@@TonysRefinishingTV thanks for the quick reply..yes I have managed to find a 2k satin but I was just unsure whether it was applied the same, quick glance through your vids and my youtube searching is over!
Thanks again
No problem at all buddy I always try to get back to everyone sometimes takes me a while but I always do , hope you enjoy our channel buddy stay safe
Yo mate. Why You don't cover the wheels ?
Follow You from Poland.
+Mariusz Kulisa thanks glad you liked the video an nice to know your following us all the way from Poland ,the van is having new wheels and tyres so there was no need to cover these usually we cover them up but in this case it wasnt needed
great video. my bus was painted 3 years ago in 2k acrylic direct gloss but I've had to fix some welding issue that the restorer got wrong. so some of the van is still painted and some has had panels replaced and is in etch primer. Am I better off priming the replacement parts, rubbing down the existing paint and repainting in direct gloss or could I go with a basecoat and clear? if so, does all the old paint and primer have to come off? I'm not sure what the paint is but the primer is Etalon Etaprime 4:1
Your first option fella prime the new stuff and sand everything else down and then repaint in 2k buddy that’s what would be easiest
@@TonysRefinishingTV thanks. so would I sand the existing paint down to primer too or just DA it for fresh paint? so I would go again with 2K direct gloss? the guy in the local motor factors said that the guy who previously painted my bus 3 years ago normally clear coats over the 2K direct gloss by sanding the direct gloss back down. Is that even possible?
Yes you can clear over gloss , just and it all down so it’s smooth and keyed you don’t need to be taking whole layers back off if the paint is good
@@TonysRefinishingTV ok great thanks for the advice
No problem at all mate
Hi, What tip size did you use on the top coat?
I normally use 1.3 mate for too coats
Hi Tony,
I’ve followed your suggestion to use abranet for sanding the guide coat. But I’m finding I’m getting dust pills straight away. I thought it might be the guide coat so tried it on virgin filler primer and had the same issue. Tried it with suction and without and it makes no difference.
Any ideas what’s wrong?? Thanks
id say your primer isnt dry enough then mate if its balling up on the pads
Tony's Refinishing
Thanks for your answer. It’s not been in an oven but it’s been on over a week. That should be enough for primer?
Looks like I’m wet sanding 😕
should be more than enough mate yes are you putting the correct amount of hardener in it ect
Tony's Refinishing don’t know what’s wrong but used it wet and got the job done great. Thanks for your help.
What make and type of direct gloss paint did you use? I love this stuff but always hear people complain about it and wonder why. I always think base and clear is too long winded :)
It's a brand called mobihel that the local suppliers does , lower end of the price range but not a bad direct gloss , I've just never been much of a fan of direct gloss lol
+Tonys_Refinishing. Thanks for reply. Try some sikkens autocryl or glasurit 22 line. Its Lovely stuff. Really enjoying your vids, especially nice to hear people still calling clear coat "lacquer"
+C Marshall haha well i grew up with lacquer but seems times are changing lol, thanks il try some of that thanks for the info, and glad your enjoying the videos too mate appreciate the feedback
Did you use 5 liters ?(5 primer and 5 paint ?)
was a long time ago this mate im not sure
@@TonysRefinishingTV doesnt matter ,by the way do you need exactly the same ammount of paint and primer when handling single stage?
No not at all primer would depend on the condition of the vehicle and repairs needed really paint make sure you work on enough to paint the whole item and then I usually get a touch extra just in case
Tonys_Refinishing the whole vehicle needs priming , it's a mess ..... is the analogy usually 1/1 or less/more
There’s no sort of set limit tbh I find ok usually get in a 5 litre kit of primer for a full car a may use it all or not but I work on 3/4 good high build coats on something that’s had a lot of work then I have plenty to block and sand before paint
