Inspired by "The Tell-Tale Heart".
SYNOPSIS:
Gripped by the fear of possible repercussions and tortured by the guilt of his violent actions, Taylor seeks to hide his sins in hopes that they will go unnoticed and become no more than a dirty little secret... However, his plan quickly falls apart when he begins to see menacing visions and the line between reality and paranoia becomes blurred...Is it all in his head or can the dead truly take revenge?
SPOILER
There's something very intelligent I've never noticed before : in the shot at 29:24, we can still see the eyelight in the girl's eyes. An eyelight is usually used to give life / soul to a character ; when she dies, the camera moves slightly to the right, making the eyelight disappear : at that moment, she died. Very clever use of lighting that I haven't noticed before.
Spoiler Well spotted
Wwoooww you got the very detail spot of the movie!!
Oh my God...how did I not see that..it's a crispy hell of a detailed

How did this NOT win an award. The suspense was killing and that actor was amazing. I can see him doing a lot more film. Out of all the short films I've watch he was phenomenal.

I feel really bad that the people like Ryan and his team put so much effort into these films and only reach under half of a million views. While others who half ass their videos reach an unexplainable amount of views. The whole talent < content ratio bothers me about youtube.
This short movie is really how things occur in DV situations, and with some officers. This is why back up is needed. I'm glad his friend didn't get physically involve, but trying to blame him for the idea of killing her was a joke. This was a great movie and it shows how things actually occur. ( GUILT can really destroy the mind)
The combo of superb acting from every one in this, superb story and script, and camera work. I give this 10 stars. Better than 90% of movies today. Awesome!!!!!!!
Ok Simply put. This movie was the best horror film I have EVER seen in my life. Absolutely perfect in every way from the opening to the music. I mean this thing is just otherworldly. Wow! The actors were just so convincing and I shivered at intervals. The feeling was visceral. The main character is brilliant.
Really? Guess you don't watch much horror flicks. This was totally lame.. a murdering moron.. so silly.

Jesus, this film took two years for Ryan to say he was gonna do it, took a WHOLE YEAR to shoot and edit, and all he had was family and a few friends and one actor. JESUS! Such a painful process in my opinion, but good film, good job.
Must have taken alot, but great job achieved. A good film made from not much
It's amazing the work and time that does go into films. As a watcher who know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about film, it seems like it should take like a month or a week, lol. I obviously have no clue.
@@lewasil Hi, that s my field . I know that even a short can take time .
But it was way too long, nothing happened, they should have cut some parts. ( sorry I’m french : il y avait des longueurs qui n apportait rien , ni en terme de tension, ni en terme de compréhension ) . Sorry it s late ...
But you have ideas and now it’s like a good french wine , you will get better at each experience, because you ll learn from previous film what is working and what s not . Tu vas te bonifier comme un bon vin !

What did u not hear her she was Jack ass too
Really? I thought it was lame.
Movies of this type never scare me but this one gave me the spooks and I actually jumped during the attic scene when he looked up and seen her. Also the way it was going, I thought the cop was going to walk down stairs. I didn't see that coming and that's rare for me. The conversation over the phone and the visit from the friend told a bigger story and made the movie feel so much larger than it was. This was your best short yet. EXCELLENT JOB!
You should check his "Proximity". Just brilliant piece of work.
OMG its so horrible that i cant even watch some scenes without pausing
Mine was he was going to cut her and didn't that made me say "oh God no! Disrespect to the body!" I had to look away. The music at that point I couldn't handle. Very well done.

How....seriously How........How does something like this not get Ryan Connolly a studio contract to make a Hollywood film? If this short doesn't get the attention of studio execs, then it's a scary mountain for us other filmmakers under film riot. Jesus Creest this was amazing!!!! Wow!

Horror is by far the most difficult genre to shoot but you guys tackled it seemingly effortlessly.
Pros:
-Fine transitions & horrifying music added to the intended tone & pace.
[successfully conveyed a deftly anxiousness as should horrors do]
-The antagonist's performance was very believable.
-Seems both character & plot driven.
-Fantastic lighting.
-Minimal dialogue, lots of performance & audience-to-antagonist empathy
-Wasn't your average Horror: there was no main victim since it was from the villain's perspective. Very unconventional
Cons:
-The ending didn't make me feel sorry for villain, at all.
-The ending didn't leave much room for ambiguity or retrospect.
A film so well-directed, should make me want to ponder more about it.
It ended w/ that's it, everybody died.
Why didn't her hand move?
To be fair, I'm not sure you were supposed to feel sorry for the villain. And her hand didn't move because she's dead... also because hand moving is a horror movie cliche.
I thought it was fine, like Austin said I don't think you were supposed to feel sorry for the villain, just because you follow a person in the story, doesn't mean you have to have sympathy for them. I also thought it had enough room to ponder. What happened afterwords. What about her friend, the family and loved ones of all the characters, why was there a shot of the keys after him and his friend got off the phone. Did he go and check afterwords? Being connected to the characters and thinking of what it would feel like if that happened to you, leaves a lot of thought to play with. That's my opinion, obviously this film isn't perfect, but I wouldn't personally say those are good criticisms.
Idk I felt pretty sorry for the villain, the ending was highly ambiguous and I did ponder about it

Alexander Huggonson freddyw and corridor digital are good filmmakers and genius vfx artists. But Ryan is focused on a more classic style and doesn't focus and pure action and vfx. If you want action go Freddiew ore corridor digital. If you want plot and good story telling go Film riot

Aha! Rather expertly done, if I do say so myself. . . and I do! Also, a wonderful homage to Poe's Tell-Tale Heart
This film easily holds all the elements of horror and delivers them nearly perfectly! Here's How:
1. We are immediately given an extremely compelling storyline. We connect deeply with the arguing couple for two reasons. The first would be that such a situation is actually very common in our own individual lives and as part of our relationships - arguing, not killing (. . .hopefully). Second, the great acting coupled with perfectly executed atmospheric music pulls us right into the scene. The stage is set with brilliant lighting and cinematography that make the atmosphere a bit more surreal, which perfectly captures the surreality of the film. All the aesthetics are there, the story is short, sweet, and effective, and we can now begin feeling thoroughly terrified.
2. When it comes to Horror, Fear is clearly the most important element of any story. What is so amazing about this piece is that the type of fear used in this film is so experiential. That is, the viewers are made to experience what the lead character is experiencing. We could easily have a breakdown like he did, and this is terrifying. But also, we experience the same fear and anxiety as he does in dealing with this "haunting."
I mean, how many times have you wanted to kill somebody? It plays on the anger and frustration that we all feel in our lives, especially in relationships at times. Throw in a pinch of paranoia, manifested as a vengeful spirit, and you've created a perfect recipe for a "fear casserole" and provided us the spoon to eat it with too. That is, you connected the fear to the audience.
3. What is beautiful about this film is that it uses suspense to continuously and purposefully build up the unexpected surprise at the end. It begins with some of the usual tropes of a ghost film - strange noises, visual manifestation, things moving (curtain), etc, but then it begins providing a twist, that this may all just be paranoia brought on by his guilt and anxiety. Furthermore, the tale constantly evolves as new elements are introduced, beginning with the argument, then the ghost stuff, then the friend, and then the cop, twisting the story until it cries uncle. All of these add new layers to the cake. Instead of offering respite from any of our previous fears and anxieties, these new components actually compound them. Finally, we get an ending that leaves us wondering whether or not there was a ghost or if he was actually just paranoid or psychotic. The atmosphere is beyond palpable as we begin to sympathize, and sometimes even empathize with the killer, feeling his stress as these delusions set in and as he deals with these people who arrive at his home seeking answers.
4. How do they manage to captivate us like this though? That answer is simple. The audio and visual cues are rhythmically synched. What I mean is that the music is appropriately chosen and coupled with events that we SHOULD be paying attention to. There are no cheap scares here. When we are meant to pay attention to something, the music and visual cues make it clear to us that we should be paying attention. Example, the curtain scene. Not only is he hearing the curtain rattle, but the girls eyes open again and stare in that direction. Simultaneously, the music picks up and builds up to the hand touching his hand through the curtain. This is PERFECT!!! So seamless and brilliant!
5. I believe the main element that makes us want to keep watching to the end is the mystery of whether or not there is a ghost or if he's just going crazy. We want to understand what's happening, and so we warily brave the fear and anxiety to the end. This is greatly enhanced by the spoilers used. This film specifically chooses not to use certain tropes of the ghost film, such as flickering lights, and instead chooses only elements that could be entirely psychological, such as the visions and sounds. This makes it all the more real and deeply connects the audience to the overlying and pleasantly overbearing sense of fear.
6. Finally, we reach the ending! The energy is increased dramatically when he interacts with the cop, especially when things start getting physical. The icing on the cake, and possibly the most powerful moment in the film, is the very end. The camera slowly creeps in on the bathroom, the music gets increasingly louder and terrifying. Soon, we're staring directly at the hand and waiting for something to happen to signify that it was indeed a supernatural experience. We're waiting for that jump scare to arrive and cannot look away, when suddenly, it just ends. The fear was at its maximum in that moment. Everything in the film led to that final moment and my God was it worth it!
Well done my friends!
I was thinking Poe all the way after he put her in the attic.
this is longer than the movie
When I saw her looking down from the attic my soul hid behind my body that shit had me SHOOOK!!!
This is really good. I was half expecting there to be a comedic twist because Film Riot. My only real issue is that it ends with new character who is introduced so late in the film. It should have ended with him killing his best friend, someone who we already know, and who had accidentally caused the whole drama.
YaYa Man or introduced the cop in the beginning like cop busting the party at the beginning
I think the late arrival of the cop added an unexpected twist that worked. Oh, well, to each his own!
This is a nice suggestion.
When it comes to legit filmmaking, Film Riot doesn’t mess around.
YaYa Man I don’t think the ending could have been more brilliant

This short film is really good. I love how real it seems. It's not fake. There is nothing that happens (except for the dead girl being a ghost and all) that is unreal or out of the realms of possibility. And it put a vision to The Tell-tale heart gives it a form. A form in a different light but still a form. I wish my short films where this realistic and that I was this good a telling a story.

Some advice to you, Ryan. First is that when you write dialog, you should maybe take a look at old black and white films and listen to the actors and their way of words. Maybe read old novels by Ernest Hemingway or Dashiell Hammett to give your films a unique touch that's sort of different from other short films. Appreciate the human language and use it to its full potential. Now, learn to use less hand held camera. It's become over done and if you're going to use it, at least do something new and unique to it. Practice longer takes with it, and if it's unnecessary to the scene, use a dolly or a tripod. Some of your shots feel either like they're from a TV show. Something along the lines of CSI sometimes. Learn to experiment more with the camera and use what you have to it's full advantage. Work with different lenses also. Try using less music next time, it sometimes makes your films feel too manipulative towards its audience. Other than that, nice lighting, good suspense, fairly fluent editing, and a decent set up.
You know this was made two years ago right? I agree about the music in his later short PROXiMITY, but in this I feel the music fits it very well and isn't really overdone.
Connor Evans but don't you just get tired of horror soundtracks that have that "eeeeeeh" build up and just stops? I feel it's a cheap way of creating scares and suspense. Good suspense comes from build up, not music. Whenever you have music in a scene, you become predictable with your scares, thus, making it less scary. Foreshadow your scares. Don't tell the audience when they're supposed to be scared.
Yeah I found one instance in this where it was a little over done, but when he sees her looking down from the attic the music made me shit my pants.
Connor Evans well, let's agree to disagree, then. The only times a horror movie soundtrack has ever worked for me was for "the Exorcist" and "Antichrist" (not that I recommend you watch "Antichrist". It's not a bad movie, far from it, but it is a film where four audience members fainted at the screening)
Best RUclips critique I've seen in a while.
Jesus Christ. It took me a solid three trys over like 4 years or so to finally finish this! Respect.
SHORT! It's half an hour!!
Short Films are within 10 - 45 minutes of screening time, if you're interested to know.
^^ also, they are considered indie film makers, and usually indie movies are about half an hour. They are really cool to be behind the scenes also.
"Short" is literally in the title...
I remember Ryan saying short films shouldn't exceed 15 minutes.
shouldn't but obviously this did.
lol... :O
There are many scary scenes :D
I'm not normally a fan of the "guy kills wife/gf/whatever, guy is haunted by guilt", but it's mostly because people do it a lot without bothering to do it right. You, however, blew it right out of the water for me. There weren't any cheap jumpscares, excessive gore, or shock factor. It was just pure chilling atmosphere, and the cinematography was (chef's kiss). I think the scene where she's in the bathtub, he shuts her eyes, and then things start happening-- definitely my favorite moment. I loved the way the camera doesn't zoom in on it when her eyes do open, no scary noises, no drawing it to your attention-- but you still see it, you have to see it, and it's super haunting. Gave me goosebumps. Well done!
I think the scariest part was when the girl's eyes were looking at him when he turned around. Just something about blood, black masquera, and huge desolate eyes makes up enough of a horror film....
Poor ladies.
She had every right to want to know where he had been.
The other was just doing her job.
It's so scary to think about how many psychopathic insolent jackasses are out there.
It'd be a safe world if no two people got together, however.... It wouldn't be much a world after time.
