I tried sonarworks with my dt770 and my hd600 ........ and in my car my mixes was horrible lol ....... I think a very very flat sound is special for ears.
I have the Sen 660s and the DT 770. In contrast to many people that seem to swear by the DT 770s to me they sound a bit harsh. This can be great for finding problems in the mix but for general listening they become fatiguing quickly at least for me. I can only comfortably listen to them if I eq them down a couple of db around 8kHz and 16kHz. Actually I was surprised when you described them as not harsh having already described the Sony as very bright (I haven't tried them but I am really curious to see how they sound). I have A/B mine quite a lot and when I switch between the 660s and the DT 770 the sibilants just pop out whatever I am listening to (hi hats, more bright snares, crashes you name it, are all over the place) to the point where I would drastically EQ them if I was only using the DT 770 for mixing. I would say that I am a bit more sensitive to bright sounds (and I like more warm sounds in general this is true) but the problem is the following. Many Beyer Dynamics headphones, including DT 770, have a really obvious peak around 8-9kHz in their frequency response which is measurable. And the peak is also quite extreme, it is around +9 to 10 dB SPL from the expected flat frequency response (at least according to the measurements I have seen online in a few popular review sites). So there is a big amplification there (at least on paper) and honestly I am not sure how much harsher you can get at least at this specific high treble range. I am not trying to argue with anyone's experience as this is really subjective but having them described as not harsh at all (not only by you but also many reviewers actually) and the fact that many people seem to not only not be bothered, which is understandable as people have different sensitivity to different frequencies, but not even notice any brightness in such an obvious EQ peak (it is similar to taking your DAW EQ and going in these frequencies and almost maxing them out) really strikes me as odd. Again I am not trying to say everyone is wrong but anyway I wanted to mention it in case someone has a similar experience. I might as well be reading the charts wrong too to be frank. (It is worth mentioning that below these frequencies the headphones are almost completely flat so if you are listening to something that does not have many trebles you should get a pretty accurate and not harsh at all sound). Anyway thanks for the review. Cheers.
A thing about the DT770, the 32/250 ohm versions have similar drivers, but the 80 ohms have distinctly different drivers, which gives them also a distinctly different sound to the other versions. Many people (including myself) prefer the 80 ohm sound.
@@iimmyyyy I am an engineer by trade, so I dont really like using vague words like that. As far as I can remember (it has been a while since I tried the 250 ohm version), the 80 ohm has a stronger 'V curve', and hence is just more pleasant to listening to. It might not be 'accurate' in the sense of a flat frequency response, but if I would want that I'd look at other types of headphones anyways. I suppose people would call this 'warm' or stronger bass. What might be more important than driver response, is that the 32 ohm versions come with faux leather pads, whilst the 80 ohms come with (excellent) velour pads. That alone I think is worth it to get the 80 ohm version.

I sent my Ollo S4X 1.1 back because even though sound quality is great, they are missing a lot of high end so you can't trust your mixes. Also the ear pads are too small so they sit on the ears which is painful with the high clamping force. However Ollo is currently working on bigger ear pads for the next version. Maybe they'll fix the missing treble too, who knows. For now, I'd advise waiting until the next version with bigger pads comes out.

Have not tried the higher ohm models. And yes, I do like the flexibility to use with any device outside of the studio. I’m actually using the DT700 Pro X most often now and they’re the best of both worlds 👍
they're good headphones... I always had a hard time getting the low end to translate (they're quite hyped). the headband also started falling apart on me :/
to me they color the sound too much... but theyre still very popular. cant go wrong with em i just dont find em accurate for my preference. i use the DT-770 PRO and theyre amazing
Depends on the kind of music you are aiming to produce / mix. Me as a trap / hip-hop producer they just didn’t cut it. The low end isn’t well defined. Sort of muddy. Sound stage wasn’t that great to me either. Personally feel they are the most overrated headphones on the market.
Just out of curiosity I'm looking for high quality headphones that are super pleasant to listen to with high bass. I usually use the ones that sound best to make the song and don't use the flat response until I actually need to mix. I noice that I lose a lot inspiration when using mix headphones to produce lmao. Hi Sean... hey would you think that the neumann ndh 30 are better than the HD 650... the Neumans are only 270 euros more... the struggle... would appreciate your view ... thank you Sean
this is a great video. only mystery to me is how one would point out the high-end on the Adam and Sony, yet totally ignore the typical "Mt. Beyer" peak on the 770s. Super hyped treble is the Beyer signature sound, and it's fatiguing af.
In my experience, the 770s are very dependent on the headphone amp. I have the 80ohm version - they’re not nearly as bright as the others mentioned, not fatiguing at all to my ears.
Hello, your videos are very helpful so thanks and I have seen all three pairs of headphones you have advertised. I’m actually looking for a pair of headphones which have a very good quality jack plug and or replaceable jack plug if needs be. I notice you advertised Beyerdynamic DT-770 models? I’m only looking for monitor headphones for home use mastering mixing with GarageBand and Logic. Which would you recommend for home use for mixing and singing recording vocals? Can I see a picture of the cable and jack plug on the Beyerdinaic D-770 headphones please?
Hey Rickie, the 770s are great. However, the new DT 700 Pro X have an updated design with replaceable cable. I would recommend giving those a look! ruclips.net/video/r-izgCNgwr0/видео.html
@@SeanDivine oh thanks. I’ve got a photo of the DT-770 Beyerdynamic 32 OHM headphones, are these the ones I’ve described you are referring to? I wish I could show you the picture though they might well be the same as you are talking about. Yes being able to replace the cable may be important as the jack plugs connected to the cable tends to wear out and balance of sound deteriorate after a lot of use.
My DT770s developed a buzzing in the left ear which led to it completely dying. The right ear is fine but it means that I can't produce on them anymore. I have had to revert back to the headphones that came with the focusrite scarlett 2i2 1st gen which are really uncomfortable. So as a result I'm looking at getting a new pair with a removeable cable to eliminate this problem.
I have the 770 80 ohms and they sound so quiet on my Apollo FireWire. I’m also have akg k240 studios which I’ve had for a long time. They are open back and pretty cheap but I’ve used them for awhile and mainly use it as my primary mixing headphone
@@ChrisBessy I’ve been using them for awhile, basically since I first started making music. My mixes turn out nice but my ears have adjusted to them considering how long I have used them for now. They are not the best headphone by any means on the market but I find them to have a fairly balanced frequency response. If you are looking for a first time headphone that’s cheap, good material (I’ve only replaced the ear cups to get a softer more comfortable feel with them) and fairly balanced then I would suggest them. I plan on possibly getting a pair of audiotechnica at mx50 possibly soon however but more for the production side of things because the low end is boosted somewhat. In the end it just comes down to doing the work, managing time, and being patient. You can even get great mixes using apple earbuds. I occasionally use apple earbuds as a reference sometimes when mixing so my mixes have the capability to translate on other devices
Really great comparison video. Can I ask - been working HD650s with a headphone amp for a few years, but am going to need to move to closed backed for a little while. Do you think the DT770s would be my best move? Being that you've used both, I'd very much appreciate your take. Thanks.
hey Andy, the 650 has better imaging and smoother highs IMO... I prefer the low end response of the 770. I've heard good things about the 1770 and those would likely be a closer match in terms of performance / price to the 650.

I am in Iran and due to economic problems I have to choose cheap equipment I had several training courses with Iranian mix engineers, but my problem still persists Please help me how to solve my problem🙏❤️
the main issue with open backs will be the bleed coming OUT of the headphones...however, yes, if you have heavy outside noise an isolated closed back would be better!

Hi Sean. Could you kindly recommend 1 or 2 headphones for an upgrade of my Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250ohm? The main intention is to mix with headphones in a more truthful way (without spending a fortune). I thank you in advance.

Surprised to see so many closed backs on the list
It comes down to preference :) For the styles I typically work on, closed back have a better low end representation imo
Which headphone output or headphone amplifier would you reccomend for 250 ohm headphones?
Can a tascam us-122 mkii run a dt 770 80 ohm or 250 ohm?
Thanks for a great video - very useful
What about Audio-Technica ATH-M50X ?
Great quality video and information thanks bro!
thanks bro 🙏
I just bought a pair of Audio-Technica ATX-M50x headphones. The both the high and low end are pretty detailed. The mids sound great too.
I find the mids very recessed while the highs are super harsh and exaggerated. EQ helps to some extent.
@@substance90 yes for me the m50x was not flat ..... and not comfortable compared to my dt770 lol ..... :)
I have the Audio technica M40x’s right now. What’s an upgrade do you think from that? I record/ mix and master hip hop.
I've had issues with beyerdynamics drivers having low power handling, Is that the case for you as well on the dt770-80 ohm?
Awesome video! Thanks dude!
Have you tried ollo S4X ?
what type of mic?
The headphones pre in your UFX can’t drive the higher ohm DT-770s, then … ? Or you just wanted to be able to use them with your phone, etc, too … ?
Did you try out the higher ohms model with your UFX, at all? Cheers!! 😎🙏🏼
Have not tried the higher ohm models. And yes, I do like the flexibility to use with any device outside of the studio. I’m actually using the DT700 Pro X most often now and they’re the best of both worlds 👍
Any thoughts on the Audio Technica ath-m50x anyone?
they're good headphones... I always had a hard time getting the low end to translate (they're quite hyped). the headband also started falling apart on me :/
to me they color the sound too much... but theyre still very popular. cant go wrong with em i just dont find em accurate for my preference. i use the DT-770 PRO and theyre amazing
@@SeanDivine Thank you. Love your videos, they are great and very helpful!
Depends on the kind of music you are aiming to produce / mix. Me as a trap / hip-hop producer they just didn’t cut it. The low end isn’t well defined. Sort of muddy. Sound stage wasn’t that great to me either. Personally feel they are the most overrated headphones on the market.
@@YungCokeMusic What do you recommend?
What about the dt 990
How is the sound stage for the DT-770’s?
As with any headphone, that can be one of the tougher aspects of a mix to judge, overall though, solid!
Just out of curiosity I'm looking for high quality headphones that are super pleasant to listen to with high bass. I usually use the ones that sound best to make the song and don't use the flat response until I actually need to mix. I noice that I lose a lot inspiration when using mix headphones to produce lmao. (Like concert quality open back)
Check out my review of the new Beyerdynamic Pro X. They’re great 👍
Hi Sean... hey would you think that the neumann ndh 30 are better than the HD 650... the Neumans are only 270 euros more... the struggle... would appreciate your view ... thank you Sean
I haven't tried the Neumann :/
Will the apollo x4 do for the DT770 ? 80 ohms
Yep, should work well!
Are the Beyerdynamic DT-770 80 Ohm (Closed Back) good for mixing and mastering?
Can you please suggest a good headphone for mixing and mastering clean and distorted guitars for rock music?
Hi sean, Don't you find the dt990pro better than the dt770pro for mixing? The price is similar (in my country).
I have Adam Audio studio monitors so I’m curious about their headphones.
Thx! 770s came in yesterday
this is a great video. only mystery to me is how one would point out the high-end on the Adam and Sony, yet totally ignore the typical "Mt.
Thanks bro great review.
I have the DT-770 pros. They're great, but they don't have enough low end for me. Which of these has the best for low end?
Check out the DT 700 Pro X. They were released after I filmed this and they're the ones I use over the 770s now.
Great video, thanks!
Sir can we use gaming headphone in musical instruments keyboard for practice only?
Check out the DT 700 Pro X. They have a removable cable 👍 ruclips.net/video/r-izgCNgwr0/видео.html
Does that mean you like mixing on the dt770`s more than the HD650`s?
I use both for different situations... currently using the DT 700 Pro X / DT770 for mixing and the HD650 primarily for mastering
would you recommend beyerdynamic dt-770 or the dt-990 pro better? Thanks ! I have an Appolo twin x as audio interface also.
I have the 770 80 ohms and they sound so quiet on my Apollo FireWire. I’m also have akg k240 studios which I’ve had for a long time. They are open back and pretty cheap but I’ve used them for awhile and mainly use it as my primary mixing headphone
do you have good mix results with k240 ? i am searching the best for finish my tracks ......
I'm deciding between the 990pro and the 770pro to mix and master trap music, which one do I choose?
I haven't tried the 990... obviously, big fan of the 770 :)
Sean bro , dunno if someone ask you already, but whats that graphic equalizer looking like a tablet near your monitor? Thank you!

@@SeanDivine thank you bro, appreciate You 😊
Really great comparison video.
@@SeanDivine Hey, thanks so much Sean. I'll try those out
Still waiting for you to put out divine mixing chain for the (waves studio rack 11 version). Please do that, cant wait to purchase that cos i have just upgraded my waves bundle
Stay tuned :)
@@SeanDivine Purchased already...
I am confused...which is better for mixing and mastering opened back or closed back?

Great video thank you very informative
Hello Master, thank you for your valuable videos . I have a problem , I use Eris 5 speakers for mixing And I compare it with the reference song , Everything sounds great , But with the phone speaker, the volume of my song is much louder than the reference song And this is very annoying . I even tried SonarWorks but my problem was not solved . I have an audio technic ath-m20x headphones But it does not have a good sound , My sound card is saffire pro 14 , And I do not know what to do to have a good mix . I have been mixing hip hop songs for 4 years And now I need a higher quality to earn credit ... The acoustics of my room are relatively good, but I work in a 3 * 3 room. Where do you think the problem comes from? Do I need to replace my speakers or buy a open back headphone ? But which model is better? I am in Iran and due to economic problems I have to choose cheap equipment I had several training courses with Iranian mix engineers, but my problem still persists Please help me how to solve my problem🙏❤️
Hi Sean just a quick, very basic question. Someone who lives near a traffic prone area should avoid open backs right? Thanks for your videos.
the main issue with open backs will be the bleed coming OUT of the headphones...however, yes, if you have heavy outside noise an isolated closed back would be better!
@@SeanDivine I have outside noise. So am worried about that. Thanks!
@@accentontheoff when using open backs, when you actually play the sound u cannot hear anything from outside of the headphones if it isnt actually LOUD.
@@kulli22yearsagoedited36 Yep. So a small amount of noise is manageable. Thanks!
@@accentontheoff definitely. even when people are playing loud music in the other room i cant hear anything if i have music playing to my ears on my hd650's which are really open
Hi Sean, good review. Do u recommend the Beyerdynamics for genres like Deep House, House, Minimal? Thxs!!
Yep! I’ve mixed many genres with them, great phones!
If you had to put Sony MDR 7506's vs Sony WH-1000XM4's in a scale of 1-10 for best music listening expierince, what would that be in your opinion? (Example like 5.2 vs 7). Was curious to ask - thank you.
Sennheiser 650's are IT!
Yo, it's like 2 weeks now that I'm trying to upgrade my mixing headphones but I'm a bit confused now, would you actually suggest to buy the dt-770 80 ohm version for mixing-only? Isn't it closed back? Thanks in advance for any advice!
do you decide to get these? I'm debating wether to order some
I have the DT770 and the HD650 and I love them. Also my AKG702
Which ones do you like the best for mixing?
I’m on fl on my desk top. Do I need anything else or can I just buy the headphones and be good?
Hi Sean. Could you kindly recommend 1 or 2 headphones for an upgrade of my Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250ohm? The main intention is to mix with headphones in a more truthful way (without spending a fortune). I thank you in advance.
In my opinion, the HD650 and DT1990 are some of the most detailed / accurate for mixing but they're pricey. I've also heard good things about Audeze (manny model) but haven't tried them personally.
@@SeanDivineThanks for your advice Sean. I really appreciate your work. I would like to ask you what differences do you think there might be between the HD650 and the HD600. The latter are particularly dated but still seem to be highly esteemed today
Sir kindly inform something about KRK 8400.thanks
Listening on DT-770s. Love them. I guess I made a smart decision.
