Painterly Effect with Affinity Photo

- In this video I walk you through the creation of a type of painterly effect using Affinity Photo. Even though the process is similar for each image it does need to be tailored somewhat for each one. I show the application of the effect to two types of image. A rugged man with a beard and a pretty woman. I think the final effect is pretty good considering it uses no plugins or external programs. I hope you find it useful.

Thank you very much Eddie. I do try my best to give information without waffling on too much. I don't like videos where you have to watch for ten minutes before they get to the point.

thank you for sharing scott :)
My pleasure!
Thanks a lot for sharing this! I was considering buying Photoshop Elements, just for 1 filter (paint-effect), that I miss a lot and couldn't find elsewhere in affordable software. Your approach to get this effect is very usefull to me and is also more tweakable to my likings. 👍
You're very welcome!
Excellent very enjoyable thank you
Glad you enjoyed it

Wowwww... great
Thank you very much.
Nice work
Thank you very much.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Love the video. Amazing images. I just started to use Affinity Photo. I was wondering if this method could be turned into a macro. I know there are numerous Photoshop actions but I haven't found many for Affinity photo, especially when it comes to a painterly effect. Tks.
Cheers Tom. I don't see how this could be turned into a macro as you can't use the tone mapping persona in a macro. Also each image requires it's own tweaks so it would be difficult to pin the effect down to a single macro.
Nice video. Thanks! Subscribed. :D
Welcome aboard.
🔥🔥🔥
👍
Thanks, I followed your tutorial to a 'T' and the result is now my social network avatar.
Cool. Great to know the tutorial is useful in the real world 😊
Thank you sir.
You are welcome.

You're welcome
You have a great way of getting information across. I’ve been watching your video and can’t help but feel dad that your not active on RUclips of Kate. I pray all is well
Thank you very much. Everything is fine. I am just very busy at the moment😊
Thanks!
You are very weclome.
Thank you for this informative video. I've been exploring using the painterly effect on some of my portraits and this technique is the best I've seen for Affinity Photo. I'm curious, however, why do you use "destructive" filter adjustments rather than the "non-destructive" and re-editable Live Filters? Take care and stay safe.
I tried applying the filters "non-destructively" using Live Filters and it did not have the same effect. I now understand why you used the "destructive" filter adjustments. And I learned there is a difference between the two filter systems. I always thought they worked the same. Perhaps an explanation of the differences would make a good video! Take care.
Exactly. The live denoise for instance is not as powerful. It is probably due to the fact that denoise take quite a bit of processing power. I think a video on this would be a good idea. Also a video on why you should always apply the filters with you image at 100% size or more if you want to see the true effect it is having.
You are very welcome welcome. I hope it helps.
thank you
You're welcome
“How make your photos look like they were created by Midjourney”
But seriously, great instructional value.
😊
Are there going to come new tutorials? You really do a great job and i appreciate your work! Would definitely celerate a new one. Best regards
There will be at some point. I just don't have the time at the moment. Each video takes a few days to research and create.
Cool. Caniy be done with normal backdrop/background too, to make a oil paint effect on all?
I should think so.

This is excellent, can this level of work be done on Affinity photo for IPad?
I have no idea. I have never used an iPad.
Nice work. Can I ask you something. Why when i open a photo (random) in PS and the same photo in AF, the photo in PS appers to be much smother than in AF. In AF it is more pixelated.
Thank you
It is probably down do the resampling method used. Images have to be scaled down to fit the display resolution. The method used to sample the image for resize will determine how it looks on screen. There are a couple of choices with affinity photo. Check in edit->preferences->performance. Choose "view quality" and try the options.
@@ScottWilliamsPhotography where have you been all this time. My eyes are very thankfull to you. Again you make my day. Second time. Before you told me how to make two active selection in one photo.
Thank you so much.
Nice! How well does this work with landscape photos?
Cheers Joe. I have no idea about landscape images. I will have to give it a go.
👍👍👍
😀😀😀
Amazing video✔ Is it possible that you can create Marco? for us to download.
Thank you.
Thank you very much. I'm afraid it would not be possible for me to create a macro for this.
wow
Thank you 👍
it works on ipad version?
I'm sorry. I don't use iPad.
Hi Scott, got some weird issues with the live filters not really working. Need to apply all the mentioned filters from the top menu to actually get the proper result ;/ probably some glitch in Affinity (if anyone wonders and had the same issues)
Very strange. I have never had this issue. It may be worth asking on the Affinity forums.
I have that issue too!
I think this just sold a copy of affinity and got you a sub.
Affinity Photo really is superb.
Amazing video, but it doesn’t work on the ipad. May I make something wrong?
I'm sorry. I've never used an iPad.
What if there is no blend option on the iPad version??
I'm sorry. I don't use the iPad version.
Hello. I opened a psd file which contains text layers in Affinity. Now I can not edit the text. I can not change text font style. It is a pixel layer. Pleade what can I do?
If the text is on it's own layer you could add new text using the artistic text tool.
@@ScottWilliamsPhotography Thanks. I made something else. I clicked edit-preferences-general-import smart objects and now the text can be selected and edited like a charm
That's great. It's been so long since I gave up Photoshop for Affinity photo that I really don't know all of the options for PSD importing.
@@ScottWilliamsPhotography Thank you so much for your support. Telling me how to make two active selection in one photo with pen tool you helped me a lot.
Thank you man.
There are numerous apps (cellphone/web) that claim to be one I the best!
So why did you choose Affinity to be your choice?
I used Photoshop for years. I tried Affinity Photo and realised that it did all I needed. Best money I've ever spent.
Are these images available for download to practice on?
They are from Unsplash. Go to the stock tab in AP and type beard for the man and pretty for the woman, You should be able to find them.
@@ScottWilliamsPhotography Great - Thank you!
I can't seem to find a tutorial to create it, but i guess in theory if you wanted to create a GTA effect on some portraits, this is best way to do it using this tutorial
It could be a good start.
Somebody know where I can find this tutorial but for affinity ipad....
This tutorial does not exist for iPad. I have only created it for desktop.
How would you rid the picture of his glasses?
It would be very difficult. I wouldn't bother.
Please do a version for iPad pro
I'm sorry I don't use iPad.
How do I duplicate the first layer?
ctrl+J or right click layer and select duplicate
@@ScottWilliamsPhotography thank you for responding back.
Photoshop lesson on it please? ❤❤
Sorry no Photoshop here 😊
Il is possible to make a landscape whith this technic
I haven't tried. I will have a look at that at some point. I would like to see what could be achieved.
@@ScottWilliamsPhotography Thanks have a good day
How to save?
Export or Save as.
@@ScottWilliamsPhotography everyone do these videos, but no one shows how to save, I am a beginner just starting to play around with editing photos, just never see saving and closing affinity app, thanks for the reply
