I LOVE this abstract fine art photo technique! (Easy Photoshop tutorial)

- In this week's video I show a Photoshop technique that lets you create dreamy, blurred landscape images that blend in static figures for a minimalist, abstract scene, similar to the ICM (intentional camera movement) technique. It's a bit different from my normal work, but it's a fun and straight forward way to create a totally different look from an otherwise fairly plain image.

Just a heads up - rather than Ctrl+C/V, when you have a selection, just hit Ctrl+J to duplicate the selection to a new layer 😊
Right
Superb !! Since so long I was wondering how people create such effect and nobody was ready to tell me with honesty. Thanks Andrew 😊🙏
Thank you for watching!
Wow! This is wonderful way to edit some boring seascapes that I have and make them look amazing. Thanks for sharing the great PS techniques. Thank you!!
Great video! Your close-up work is great but, I also really love the way you pass on creative ideas to try like this. These help keep me busy during the short Winter days when light is limited. Keep it up and thanks Andrew!
Thank you so much for this tutorial.... I mastered the technique in thirty minutes and yet I'm still figuring out photoshop itself and my God the result was awesome
I'm relatively new, at it for a couple of years but only as time allows, and have been learning by trial, error and RUclips. This not only gives me a new "toy" to play with but has also inspired me to perhaps search out scenes specifically for using this. Thank you for the video!
Thanks so much for watching, I'm really glad you got something useful out of it!
the creative outcome on these shots looks pretty sweet!! great tutorial 💪🏼💪🏼
many thanks 🙏🏼
Very many thanks, Andrew, for sharing your expertise.NOT too many U-tubers do this. Certainly improves my level of adequacy.
Another great tutorial -- Thank you! I'm definitely going to add this to my toolbox and try it when I find appropriate base images.
Good luck, Warrick! Keep the idea in mind when you next go out with your camera as it might be easier to try and shoot images specifically to try and do this edit.
Hey man, first time I watch one of your videos. I think it's awesome you share your inspirations and give them credits, not something I see much in the photography/video world. Also great tutorial, I think I will try it at some point! Best of luck with your channel, great content.
Thank you for an interesting technique, I've given it a try without figures and the results are, for me, really good. Going to try with people in the photo next time. Thank you again.
I have been coming up with ways to abstract landscapes and I am very thrilled to find this video. Thank you.
Fantastic! Thank you. The final images are wonderful!
That was a creative and well executed technique you shown.
Liked the way you experimented with the tools and subject matter.
Didn't know about the blur gallery, probably not included in Photoshop CS5.
Thank you Andrew.
Will definitely be adding this to my skillset! Amazing video!
Excellent! Thank you for showing us how to do this.
Wow, love it! And love that you gave the other photographer credit.
I saw this video last night, I tried it this morning and it worked a treat. Thanks for the tutorial.
A great technique to salvage images that would otherwise be destined for the delete bin. I have some images I will definitely try this on, thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks Craig! It's definitely a fun way of trying to add some magic into shots that otherwise might be forgotten. I plan to go through my catalogue over the years and see if there are more that I can try this with! Good luck with yours and please feel free to share the results!
Thanks for sharing this technique, it’s greatly expanded my options in processing my images in a non traditional way.
Thanks for watching!
This technique has been added to my must try very soon list. Thanks!!
I love the effect. Thank you!
Love this! I have LOTS of shoreline photos I can try this on.
Great tutorial for this amazing effect! Thanks.
Brilliant tutorial, very clear and great fun to try. Thank you!
Thanks, Alan!
Many thanks Andrew. I really enjoyed this. Excellent idea, great presentation and a real education for me as I have not used these blur tools.
Thanks so much as always, John, I hope you're keeping well in the new year!
top of the shelf tutorial...THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Got prompted to watch this video just before a short family trip to Northumberland. Timely as the long sandy quiet beaches are perfect for this. Tricksy techniques are not my style but this is fun, thankyou
This is a great reference tutorial that is excellently delivered. Using the effect on some images from the beach at Weston-Super-Mare.
Hi Andrew I like to class myself as a purist when it comes to photography. If the sky isn't good in an image I won't replace it, I'll just go back another day and hopefully get a better sky. I really don't like composite images and it's not something that I want to try but this technique I found very interesting. I definitely want to try it on some of my images that look suitable. As you said it's not something that I'd do regularly but now again when an image suits it's worth trying it
Definitely worth playing a bit with this!
What an awesome video. I love the end product for all 3 examples. Very nice.
Thank you, Tamara!
Hello Andrew, just wanted to say I've only just recently found your channel and absolutely love it. Starting watching for you macro content as I want to learn more and have done. But I tried this last night on a picture I had in mind and it worked brilliantly something I will definitely consider again when out in the field. Nice one, keep up the great work 👍
Thanks James, really glad you found it useful!
Love it, can't wait to give it a try
Thanks Mark!
Great technique Andrew. It never occurred to me to use the blue gallery in that way, so thank you for broadening my imagination/creative curiosity! 😃
Thanks so much for watching, Ronald, I'm glad it was useful!
I especially love the photo with the dog!
Dogs make ALL photos better. It's a pro trick.
Thank you for this, exactly what I was looking for 👍🏻
Thank you so much, I have been looking how to do this for a while. Your a Legend.
Thank you for watching!
All too often I take shot thinking this will be good until I see it on the computer & then I’m disappointed. This will help me make more of the shots I take. Thanks.
Really really like this idea, will definitely give this a go! Thank you 👍
Thanks Steve! All the best with it, I hope you get some good shots!

Thank you, Peter!
I just came across this video google must have been listening because I was checking out someone else's work that did something similar and was wondering how it was done. I was going to start playing around on Photoshop but now I have a better idea. Great explanation. Checked out Thomas' work love it.
Glad you found it useful, thanks for watching!
Great tutorial! Thanks!
Thanks Andrew, got me thinking of my next image project👍
Thanks for watching, Charles!
Amazing job buddy!
Really nice, thanks for sharing. Might try out something with this style in black and white, see how and if that will work at all.
Ooh yes I bet you could get some great results in black and white -- good luck!
Hi Andrew - great tutorial and I'm working with it now! I'm not getting the blue circle/line to draw out the curves I need in the path blur. It only shows me a pin. I've upgraded to the latest version of PS. Any advice on how to get that feature to show up?
Great tutorial, I’m inspired. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Thanks Andrew! I've been wondering for a while how these types of images were made.
Thank you for posting this ''work around''. I mean i remember a couple of years ago trying something like that by panning the camera during a long exposure, and blending elements (people or boat), into the image, but the results were nowhere as clean. I will try to revisit these images using the Photoshop side of the force. It is a path to many abilities some deem unnatural... But clearly effective ;-)
I think it's an effect that can probably be achieved a variety of different ways! In the future I'd like to try and combine in-camera long exposure movements for the blur and then blend in the static elements to reduce the reliance on photoshop even more, but then it may still not be as nice as how these turned out. Only time will tell I guess! Thanks for watching!
thanks man ❤
Very interesting, thank you very much for the great video.
Perfect and i also like the way you behave in the front of the camera. Good job.
Thank you very much, great video.
wow!
This was great. Super interesting and hadn’t really seen this style before. Thanks!
Thanks Chris! It's a very 'digital' style but I'm pleased with how it's come out. One you think you might try, do you reckon?
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography Absolutely. I think I will give it a crack with some wildlife pics actually. Will have a go and be sure to tag on Insta if it works out.
Please do! Would be great to see how it looks with wildlife shots!
That was more interesting than I had expected.
I wonder if the path blurring also works in Affinity Photo! (something to check but cannot look at it right now)
"More interesting than I expected" is fine by me! Thanks for watching!
Awesome. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks for watching, Colin!
Awesome tutorial. Really love the concept and hope to work a few that way crediting both of you :-)
Thank so much, Sanjay, really appreciate that!
Thanks for showing this!
Thanks for watching, Melissa!

Thank you for watching!
Nice and inspiring video.
And it’s not fake, it’s art 😉
Loved it, thanks for talking the time.
Great tutorial
thanks for sharing!
Amazing
let the bird in third photo stay 😍
Really, really (!) interesting technique
Thanks so much ofr this amazing tutorial Andrew!! Discovered this a bit late...I have a question you might clarify for me: Regarding the edits Tomas Fotomas does, for instance, Im just watching some pics he uploaded to IG today (March 5th 2023), how does he tackle the waves in a manner they stay as they were and they are not affected by the path blurr? Meaning, in the specific pic i mention, the wave tube still keeps its roundness and the barrel braking on the water stays the same to (the water splash seems to not be affected by the blurr). Wonder if Im explaining myself clearly enough..Thanks
This is a great tutorial, I loved it. however, there should be a easier way to stick figures out of the picture. I wonder if you have any updates on this topic, specifically, can you use the camera raw (new)mask function to achieve this effect? Thanks.
Enjoyed it very much, thanks.
Thanks for watching, Paul!
