Great tutorial. I've been an Adobe user for decades and recently decided to jump ship to Affinity. Thanks for the short sharp lesson, you've saved me a lot of clicking! 😊
This is fairly comprehensive. I never thought of using Shrink/Grow for doing Brush tool corrections. I always get disappointed when I lose my crispy edges from making Pen tool selections in spots, but this allows more fine control it seems over the edges.
This could be your best ever tutorial. I love the way you highlighted the tool and their modifiers. The rectangle is OK but really not needed(for me, anyway) as long as you continue to circle the items you have chosen. Now the video. Really excellent. You were direct and clear in the explanation of the short cuts you used and the fixing of the color on the border around the hand was genius! You are the best!!
Good video and yes, love the zoom as well as the circle around the pointer. Sometimes instructors go so fast the viewer does not see where they are clicking and it is very annoying but this makes it clear. Wish more instructional RUclipsrs would do this.
Love the zoom rectangle; it helps a lot when I'm trying to follow along is a smaller window while actually tying it out in Photo. To toggle from black to white or any chosen colour, I don't have to have to use the shift key and X; X works on its own. Maybe you have a more advanced version. This was a great help - I always have trouble with masks. This is going in my saved playlist.
I have just been selecting then cutting/pasting it out into a new layer. But I see that the mask feature gives you a lot more freedom if you know how to use it properly! It will be a hard habit to break but think I'll start doing it like this. Thanks!
Nice tutorial! So many points so I will probably have to watch it several more times to remember them all. Love the zoom feature! For some of us less experienced users, it would be helpful if you hesitated for just a second on clicks not zoomed so we can make sure which item you are clicking on.
Excellent video. Yes, I love the magnifying square. I want it for my PC! So, can you point me in the right direction? Also, some really great tips on refining a mask.
Thank you for showing this helpful video, as well as all your awesome other videos. I also like how you have magnified the area, to show where your cursor is. I often have trouble finding out where people are in different videos. 🫶🫶
Thanks Olivio, nice and detailed tuto, very useful this rectangle zoom, when using keyboard keying, must be fine to see the key combination on the screen. thanks again for sharing
Thnka you Bernard. I was thinking about using a keystroke display too. but it shows every key i'm hitting, so that will be rather confusing. And editing them in later would be a lot of work
This video is fantastic because while the AI is pretty good when it comes to selections, sometimes (depending on the photo and what your selecting), the AI gets really wonky and you need more manual control. This tutorial provides that. Good stuff! You got a new subscriber!
Great vid. Do you have any videos showing how you get multiple photos or documents into Affinity? Usually when I watch one of your tutorials they are already there. Maybe for more advance users. Thaks for any replies.
I really take what I've figured out in AP for granted. More secret sauce 1. Grow/Shrink andm any other filters and adjustments can be done in one tenth increments if you use ctrl and scroll wheel 2. Custom selecting alll your frequently used adjustments and filters to single keys or combos of Left alt and Right alt + single keys, eg LALT+B=colour balance, RALT+B=brightness contrast 👌
@@OlivioSarikas no thank you! you were the springboard for me to understand some of the basic/ advanced stuff about AP that then lead me to figure other stuff out. 🙏
excellent video Olivio in all ways. Thanks for the zoom rectangle. So helpful. I do not really understand using the brush tool to refine the mask. Do you have another video on that? I really love your videos. They are so precise and full of REALLY helpful information! Is there a short cut key to switch from Text to Arrow key? I have tried the V key but it keeps typing a V instead of just switching to arrow key.
Thank you. I'm not sure if I made another video about painting masks, but you can see me do it in my live streams a lot. For the text to arrow - I suppose while you use the text tool, everything you type is seen as text. Maybe you can setup a custom shortcut, that includes the ALT key
Not that is some really good special sauce!I always had some difficulty with the selection tool in regards to the dark edges. Now, problem solved. The zoom rectangle is a great addition to your tutorials. it definitely helps to know what tools you are using. Thank you!
thanks! What YOU'RE doing here WOULD solve all my frustration with fixing shitty selections for perfect masking, but: Ipad version 2022: there is no quick mask anymore? There is no Edge Width control anymore? (4:57) You specifically said "DON'T" click "refine selection" (2:51 ), but on ipad it seems they now force you to bc the brush selection tool is kinda useless once the artificial intelligence selection gets confused and doesn't know that a brick in the background is not part of someone's nose, and to get out of the selection brush tool and do anything else, it SEEMS you either have to click "refine selection" in the contextual menu, or switch to the "refine selection" tool, which does the same thing. Also is it still possible to get to the place where you can paint on a [mask?] with black and white to refine those AI mistakes with an artist's eye using the brush tool? What spacetime dimension / set of circumstances are required for that? 7:27 you "press Q" but on ipad that doesn't exist. does turning a mask into a selection into a mask into a selection into a mask cause generational decay like in older photoshop? At 8:24 you are painting black outside a selection. How did you make that selection happen again after being in a mask? (again i'm on ipad in 2022 so something may have been downgraded to spite the artists and not let you have as much control anymore?) like what modes or spaces are you in that this is being allowed? what tools and personas and layers etc?
Hi Olivio ! So about the Soft Edges are you saying you are recommending it only if someone uses Quick Mask and not if he wants to go through the Traditional way of Refine and then applying a Mask ? Ten should he not use Soft Edges ?
Hi augustya, you can use them in both cases. Test for different results on what you usually try to select. For the brush method the benefit is, that the edges are already smooth, so you don't have to do that later in setting or with a brush by hand
Feedback yo asked on the zoom. I feel like it's great for users on phones and tablets, but not really necessary for people on large computer screens and monitors.
Thank you :) I think many people use it on a tablet or on the side while editing. So the video might not be full screen. Plus with bad eyesight this might even help on big screens :)
Instead of using the ctrl - alt keys for making the brush size bigger or smaller you can do that also with only the right alt key on you keyboard. At least that works with my keyboard. I'm on a pc.
When I was using photoshop, I often used to edit the mask layer directly and then apply a Levels adjustment to it to get a hard-edged mask which cut exactly where I wanted it to on the grey scale of transparency. There's supposed to be a way to achieve the same thing with the new "Luminosity range" mask with V2 but I can't get the same result I used to get with photoshop. It does my head in. Once you've used photoshop, this tool just seems weird with it's approach to everything.
Grow & shrink! Thank you so much for this! I had a hard time lately with that darker edges.
This is crazy! I was just trying to refine a selection yesterday and having no luck! This is great timing for me!
Olivio: Thank you for your Affinity Photo videos. I do like the zoom rectangle, it is a great addition to your videos.
Great tutorial. I've been an Adobe user for decades and recently decided to jump ship to Affinity. Thanks for the short sharp lesson, you've saved me a lot of clicking! 😊
Zoom rectangle is very helpful and adds much to these ever magnificient and entertaining tutorials. Thanks a lot!
Thank you very much Markus
Very useful. Will save me a lot of time instead of using 'refine' multiple times.
Awesome, happy I could help :)
Your new zoom trick is great. No more squinting at the screen trying to figure out which icon you clicked.
That's awesome! And it is much faster than doing it afterwards in the video software

@@OlivioSarikas That's what I use; that's how I did it in Photoshop.
You can also configure D to automatically set color/background to black and white, quite handy.
Zoom works perfectly!

absolutely great (both: your explanation and Affinity Photo)
Thank you! That's great
Merci beaucoup!!!
Short tuts are really useful

Another like for your zoom in panel….thanks so much!
Thank you very much, Andy
zoom box very useful in following along. I have been doing my selections all wrong so this is a very good tutorial explaining a better way to do them.
Thank you very much :)
This is very helpful! I usually make a soft edge then blend it in or put a blur on the edge but this will save loads of time. Thanks Olivio!
Thank you, you are very welcome my friend
Genius thank you fantastic tutorial and tips ☀️
I have to try this. I spend so much time in refine selection, this seems way easier. Thanks for the tips.

No, sorry
I feel like I just became a Jedi Master with Affinity Photo. Who needs Photoshop?
Can I do the weekly challenge without Facebook ?
Not really, sorry! This is a activity for my Facebook group
6:11 isnt that switching key just "x", not "shift-x"?
Oh! Look at that. Just X works too. Shift+X toggle Fill and Line Color - So both work in that case

Hi Olivio. Great tutorial! However, I must be in the minority in that I don't care for the zoom box. I find it rather obtrusive.
So far most people seem to like it. Especially on small screen it makes this a lot more clear and it doesn't cover the part that it is zoomed on
what is secret sauce? no one says?
The zoom rectangle, not necessary
Really? But you can see better on small screens what i do
Brilliant but way too much information in a single video. I'd need to watch it 10x to take it all in🤔
Cant belive there is no shortcut for substrack when masking...no alt + ...Do I really need to change it so substract???
alt does subtract, do you need to be spoon-fed everything?
