See my comment - how to use the image itself as a mask. It's possible in Photoshop, but somehow the mask in AP seems to be different from pixels, channels and alpha channels.

    Hi Olivio,
I learn something everyday from you. I have done a bit of
masking and feel comfortable with it. But I have been doing
a lot of compositing for a book I am working on. And for
some reason the mask, no matter how I refined it, kept
having “ghost like borders” that I couldn’t get rid of. I walked
away for a few days frustrated.
I had saved this masking video to watch. I watched it-and
    everything was very useful.
But the pen tool discussion was very interesting. In fact, taking
what you taught me, and tweaking it a little bit, I was able
to completely solve my masking problem and get what I wanted.
In addition, I absolutely love the ability to go into the Curves layer
and tweak the nodes. I have used the Pen Tool a lot, but I had
never thought of using it this way. You are always teaching me!
    Thanks for all you do!
    the Best,
    bamboo-water (rich pack)

I don't think I can say I like one technique over another. I can think of several situations where one technique or another would be most beneficial. This tutorial will take some study, given all the different tools and techniques you showed us. I usually just use the selection brush and go from there, but these techniques, and some tools I hadn't learned about yet, like how to use color channels for masking, provides more power, subtlety and flexibility to Affinity's already awesome masking tools. Thanks for this.

So useful even 2 yrs later! Thank you. My most often used Mask is the Gradient for my outdoor images. Loved the 3-node gradient you showed here, greatly enhances the usual 2-node gradient and will likely become my new std. 😁 The Group Mask is great for eye enhancements. I see from your demo that I should involve the Color Channels Mask and the Pen Tool Mask more in my editing.

once you have a pixel selection, you can refine it by using the 'Selection Brush Tool' and experimenting with the 'add' or the 'subtract' buttons to further refine the 'pixel' selection' that will become the mask. YOu can also go to 'Select' (top menu) and click on 'Invert Pixel Selection' and invert the mask from the original selection (the boat) to the rest of the scene.

Does someone know how to extract a once made integrated mask from a live filter/adjustment layer at a later point in time, if you e.g. decide to add multiple filters/adjustment layers and want to apply the once made mask no longer on a single layer but the whole group?

    • @JyrkiGrohn
      @JyrkiGrohn 3 года назад +1

In Ipad: select masked layer, go to selections-persona and from ”...”-menu ”selection from layer”. Now you should have the mask as selection (marching ants). Go to layers-panel and make a new mask-layer.
In ipad I couldn’t find the easy way to remove an integrated mask from layer. The only way to remove it is to paint white on the mask. With computer it should need only to select the thumbnail and press ”backspace”.

Wonderful information. When I took classes, back when Graphic Design was called Graphic Art, yeah a long time ago. There was so much to learn and the professors often just said "play around with it until you get a style you like". Though I understood the sentiment, there were so many techniques we just didn't know were even possible. Being able to replay a video until it sticks in my head is such a nice help. Thanks you.
I have a question off topic. I was told in school that you should ALWAYS start your design in the end result color format, yet I find now some say it doesn't matter everything should start in RGB because you can change it to CMYK before exporting as a png. (I work on designs that would normally be printed with a home printer or on a design-on-demand such as a T-Shirt.) I also find making brushes don't seem to work well created in CMYK. I just wonder if I should start every project as a RGB and convert it later. Thoughts?

On using the 'pen tool' to create a layer: you can , once you ahve made 1 adjustment layer as Olivio explains, 'duplicate' the curve layer, move the duplicate all the way to the top of the stack, add another adjustment layer (as in the first adjustment process) and then 'mask to below' again with the new adjustment and create an new masked adjustment on top of the original masked adjustment. I tried using a 'group' but the 'mask to below' would only affect 1 single adjustment layer. I there is a way to use the same 'mask' from the pen tool selection, please post

    • @OlivioSarikas
      @OlivioSarikas  5 лет назад

Hi, Bill. I would rather suggest that you use krita for painting which is free and then use Affinity photo for finishing the work with nice effects. Other than that I would suggest that you set your walcom to use the screen resolution and ratio, so it is equal to your hand movement. Try it by seeing if circles you paint on your Wacom are also round in the software.

For digital illustration that are mostly hard lines it might be a better choice to purchase CSP or SAI (they are solely for digital drawing with minimum image processing capability), but that's up to you. Clipping mask wise, in Affinity Photo I don't think there's any way to "clip to alpha", which means you have to either raster to mask or only clip to solid shapes. For Krita I also can't find it.
So basically, if you need raster clipping groups both Affinity and Krita aren't for you. I would suggest CSP or SAI (the former has more features but is harder to use and is a nightmare to set up, the latter is much easier to use but can become a nightmare when the project is complicated enough with the lack of nondestructive workflow support, and is more expensive). Alternatively if you only need super basic stuffs there's a free version of FireAlpaca available (which has proper clip to alpha).

Masking didn't work for me! My subject is back lit and I want to bring out some colours.
I don't have the two white circles, I have 1 white and 1 black. I tried both and neither one worked.

    Do you know what, Olivio?
For filtering/adjusting details, I'd rather use my old technique: Select... Copy... Paste... Adjust/Filter.
Just working on the details directly... no masks needed.

You can do that, but if you want to change the area later on, you need to do all of that again, while with a mask you simply change the mask :)

Hi Cliff, you can slow down the video and watch parts multiple times. Does that help? This videos is probably a bit more advanced and not really suited if you just get started. It's best to get a better understanding of layers and masks first. Have a look here, if that helps: ruclips.net/video/FiauZ-PJR6k/видео.html

"Make it stronger than you need it and this will enable you to see where you are painting" WHAT A RIDICULOUS WORKFLOW!!!!!! Why not enable a translucent mask layer so that you can see where you are painting your mask.Incredibly clunky.

I'm sorry but I find myself getting more frustrated the longer I watch this tutorial.
