You’ve just made me realize that I need a new folder labeled “Most Helpful.” Blend modes are amazing, but often confusing. Plus, I’m glad I can avoid “crazy town!” 😆 YES! Please do more on blend modes! ❤️
Thanks Olivio for this and all of your Affinity videos. You've really helped me turn the corner on learning and experimenting, particularly with your advising not trying to learn the nitty gritty technical background, but use one's own artistic sense. It has really helped a lot, so that I feel like I am using a pallete, rather than an a hopeless morass of digital mysteries and technical gotchas.
I appreciate your explanations, so easy to understand and helpful. Now I realize all the possibilities of the blend modes, thank you! And yes, please do more.
Wow! I've used blend modes, but in a very limited way. It is very cool what you can do with it. Thank you for making it simple to understand. Again, well done!
Excellent tutorial and channel! I was trying to give to my photos some "fogsy vintage style" and it was so simple like add a white layer and soft light with some adjustment (or I'm doing it wrong again? ha ha ha). Thank you so much! greetings from Argentina!
Hi Olivio! Could you make a video on how to make shiny colors like no opach but as it looks if it be under the glass or something. And other tutorial is: how to draw fluffy character. Like not with curves but real fluffy as if would be a real cat or a dandelion for example. This do not work for me with curves. I don;t know what to try to get it right. Thanks in advance!
you can basically google it and find a list with also image examples, because blend modes are working basically the same way in all the different programms out there
We really need a layer FILL capability like we have in photoshop . Can you try to help make that happen. Without the FILL capability the 8 special blend modes are not very useful.. Thanks
I could have done with this intro last year at this time, I transposed over from Photoshop tutorials from Blake Rudis with some mental high jinks. There's something you could have added though, especially at the end when illustrating hard light, that mode and all the others too can be diminished by using the opacity tool to reduce that particular effect so you can tune it in to your taste.
Yes, that's true. Although there are so many little Blend Mode tricks, this video could have easily been 3 hours long and still not cover everything ;)
You can eiterh drag them into a open file, or go via the menu "File -> Place". Make sure that when you use the "place" function that "all documents" is selected and not just "txt files", or otherwise you won't see any photos to select from
Thanks for this video. I've recently been getting into using blend modes and gradients. This is helpful. Off the subject but is there anyway to make a guides manager preset? I find myself using the same guide lines but always having to type them in is time consuming. Thank you.
Thank you, Zachery. You could create Master Files with the Guides set up as you need them, then save them as Template files: File -> Export as Template :)
Any tips or recommendations on plug ins for Affinity what like Nik Collection or Snapssed does? Also what do you think - will future Afinity update include library? I am still between Lightroom, Photo app and Affinity. Kind of disturbed .,. will appreciate an answer or maybe a tutorial to adress these. Thanks !
Hi Mike, i actually don't use any other plug-ins, besides Nik Collection. About future Affinity developments: They are very secretive about it. Not even RUclipsrs get informed upfront
Hello Olivio, I somewhat disagree with you regarding the "other " blend modes. To me this is where you can get most of the artistic effects! I use the color, luminosity, hard light, vivid light and most others as extensively as as the darken, lighten and contrast categories you talked about. I use the 8 blend modes that work with the FILL adjustment rather than the OPACITY adjustment all the time for color grading. You and your readers might be interested in this web site that explains all the blend modes very well theeagerlearner.com/your-big-friendly-guide-to-layer-blend-modes/
Hi Hans, Thank you for the Link. Very nice, short descriptions :) if you look at my video again, i do include the Blend Modes like hard light and vivid light. The Luminosity and Color channel can be useful, but i would suggest them only to more advanced users. The Blend Modes i was refering to are things like Difference, Exclusion, Average, Contrast Negate and such. They are rather specialized and you very rarely if ever need them. I would rather suggest to beginners to use adjustment layers and figure out how those work first, so they have a better understanding.
@@OlivioSarikas Hello I use the average blend mode to remove color casts and use the difference blend mode a lot here is a good video on how to use it: ruclips.net/video/nbSJEIvEc8g/видео.html

Thank you, Anne :) Yes Crazy Town is really something special that can be avoided until later :)
Brand new to Affinity Photo and your videos are so helpful! Very clear and understandable without the technical mambo jumbo… thank you!! 😁
Again......this is the best explanation ever about blend mode.....finally. Thanks Oli. You're the man.
I love blend modes. It was really refreshing to have them explained from an artistic point of view rather than a technical one. Good job!
Thank you, Patricia. Very happy I could help you with this video :)
Really solid lesson on blend modes, thank you
"Crazy Town" I so love your descriptions...Great channel Sir..thank you for this great explanation!

Happy new Hera! Thanks for your enlightmemr videos Olivio
Thank you Olivio! Great practical information! Well done!
This will help me experiment with Affinity Designer... to hopefully make attention-holding progressions in teaching videos. Thanks
Good video. Don't know how I'll ever keep up with all of it. But it's something to play with.
I swear you have every a video for every thing I need to know about affinity photo. thank you sooo much!

Admirably clear and purposeful.

That was very helpful Olivio. I can see that I have been too timid. It's time to experiment. Many thanks.
Hi Olivio, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge witrh us !
A very informative way of describing when to use darker modes vs lighter modes. Cheers
Happy I could help, Anders Utterstrom

Olivio, which blend mode did you use on your beard?! Awesome video, thanks.
THANK you!!!! You are soooooooo good! Crazy!😁😁😁 I love it!
I most commonly use blend modes on brushes, clone brush specifically. Lighten and darken respectively.
I will do that in a future video :)
We really need a layer FILL capability like we have in photoshop . Can you try to help make that happen. Without the FILL capability the 8 special blend modes are not very useful.. Thanks
Click on the "Effects" tab with the layer selected you want to change. There, in the "Effects" Tab you will find the Fill slider
absolutely brilliant
Thanks for this, I always struggled to understand how to use blend modes, Feel like a light bulb has just switched on 💡

Luminosity blend mode is nice when u use generated textures

hard light does not work with opacity;ity you have to use the FILL adjustment.
