Affinity Photo seems to be arranged around graphic design as opposed to photography. I will admit, I don’t know if watermarks are possible, but AF does not compete with Lightroom.

Hello Deke. I have been dealing with a problem... that cant make it work neither in photoshop or affinity. Maybe you can enlighten us with you wisdom! Many actions we Make have s STOP function to for example use the erase tool to remove undesired object like for example a tripod from a 360 image. But when we want to apply this action to multiple files Using Batch automation or Image Processor (from scripts), the presence of this STOP function in the action messes up everything and the batch or image processing stops. Do you by any means know the answer to this issue? Would be a huge time saver for so many of us! Thanks a lot
As things stand now, Stops and Conditionals are huge challenges to batch processing. So short answer, no. But I am interested in investigating scripting in more detail, which have a few hooks into Photoshop.
@@dekeNow Hey Deke. I guess RUclips deleted my reply, not sure why. Maybe because I mentioned another website (that famous coding platform). I did tried scripting and found one over there that worked great: "advanced Batch" It is great to automate multiple actions.
@@dekeNow The script I dowloaded, it is called Advanced-batch-master, it is a .jsx file. in photoshop I created an action that will run the script (file>Scripts>browse...). An interface open in photoshop where you can chose folders which actions tu run, to set a STOP between actions and so on.
@@dekeNow No. It's just that NVIDIA\Intel created plugins for photoshop\coral\gimp etc but there is not one for AF. AF themselves stated they are considering it but it seems as today there are no plans and since AF (i could be wrong) only have plugins for effects and not file formats NVIDIA and the others can't create the DDS plugin. The amount of people requesting it should make it a no brainer for AF to support it natively which would give them an advantage of PS but i guess it's not that important to them.
Great video, and I myself am switching to Affinity due to ... being broke. But! Just an FYI: Photoshop does have filter layers like you're showing off! For awhile, maybe a couple years at least. Thanks for the vid!
@@deadxmouth Adjustment layers drill down a stack of pixels, one pixel at a time (Levels, Curves, etc.), which is computationally simple. (Hence they’ve been around since the early 1990s.) Live Filters compare entire ranges of pixels across entire ranges of layers, for each and every pixel that they see (Gaussian Blur, Unsharp Mask, Shadows/Highlights), which is a much bigger undertaking. Ps accommodates filters dynamically with smart objects, but it cheats by applying them to the composite image which grows the file size and reduces flexibility. Still helpful, but AF Live Filters are better b/c they work so quickly and painlessly that even someone as seasoned as *you* thought they were adjustment layers!
@@dekeNow Thanks for looking into it! I got caught up last night. Great info. (Also, I really hope you don't think my comment was snarky! Was definitely meant with kindness and friendship. I know how the internet is: I really did/do love your video, and appreciate you!)
For Affinity Photo? Not built into the software. (Hence, I'm not leaving Ps, just swinging 🙂.) Some commenters are trumpeting Krita, but I don’t think that’s an integrated retouching solution.
No. I don’t know what Affinity has planned for the future. But I imagine that adding AI features would require a cost increase and alienate Affinity’s fan base. Remote AI hosting is exceedingly spendy (unless you’re Nvidia 🙂).
I switched to Affinity from Adobe last year and never looked back. Affinity Photo 2 is spectacular. My only question (for now) is - why doesn't Affinity add Smart Objects to Photo? I know about the PSD Smart Object import setting - so I can import PSD mockups - but what if I wanted to create my own mockups using smart objects from scratch within Affinity? I saw a video workaround where you import another Affinity file and use it that way - is that the only way?
Photo offers several different layer types, including Image and Linked/Embedded, both of which behave a lot like smart objects in Ps. To my knowledge, you create both by choosing File > Place, as opposed to starting with an image and converting it as in Ps.
this is very cool, I like it... going to be using them more.. thanks! but it's hardly a Photoshop killer.. Still I am forced to use both as photoshop still has many features that Affinity doesn't have or doesn't have as robust versions. ie content aware, AI fills, or robust panoramic etc I really dislike all of the painful legacy crap in photoshop that works like it was a few decades old.. but the new features, the few very robust features, And the ridiculous amount of content for it makes it really hard to drop entirely. I Don't see that changing soon.
All great points! And insofar as either application moving toward another-as in, one becomes the clear winner (or gets all stompy, as in the thumbnail)-seems unlikely. The very fact that AF is even capable of live filters suggests that it’s engineered differently than Ps.
Do you mean the equivalent of Auto-Align Layers in Photoshop? In Affinity Photo, choose File > New Stack to select multiple images and set how you want them aligned. They become a Live Stack Group, and of course you can add a mask to any layers in the stack. Pretty cool!
@@brightboxstudio I need to check that out. I haven’t seen that feature mentioned in any tutorials, and I use that for my work with remodelers. That will help me to cut the chord with Adopey ! Thanks!
@@genegustafson715 Are you talking about Feathering/Density on layer masks? If so, try out the editable Gaussian Blur layer effect, which you can apply to a mask. Plus combo masks on a single layer. Must admit, I’m still in discovery mode.
I am increasingly discovering that. I started from the perspective of How does AF hold up to my expectations of Photoshop? But if you come at it from the other direction, Ps in many ways fares more poorly.
@@dekeNow Expand that to the full suite. Adobe only gives you text background color in InDesign. Photoshop still is the same Photoshop from the 90 when looking at the tools. Only tools like healbrush and now AI makes it modern. Affinity Photo has the same path tools. All 3 apps use the same file to save into. Layer masks work so much better in all 3 apps. When having all 3 apps you can switch between photo designer and publisher tool inside Publisher. The interface is truly unified and not this hack Adobe did.
It does *kinda* do it if you have a layer mask set up in advance. You know what’d be fun is to take 10 common Ps tasks and show how to make them work or shoehorn them in AffPh. Lemme know any others!
In my experience, Affinity is a weird mix of great features and advantages on the one hand, but missing the most basic stuff on the other. For example, not even having workable mask overlays.
@@dekeNow Look for "How to show red overlay when masking" on the Affinity forum, if you're interested in what I'm referring to. Anyway, thanks for the video!
1 affinity is not a competitor. 2. You still need a raw developer 3. Both have trouble handling huge files 4 photoshop interprets colors better than affinity-at least on raw So photoshop still wins. I wish we had a good non subscription photo editor
Affinity does not hold up well in developing raw images, this is true. In fact, that is a deficit I’ll be addressing in a future week. But in many, many other respects, it competes better than anything else I’ve seen.
On the raw side of things I agree with you. But I actually turned to Affinity when I discovered how much better it handled really large files! The first save takes awhile, but after that each save (after having made changes) takes a fraction of what PS does. Personally, I turned to Capture One for all my raw storage and development 10 years ago. I’ve been super happy with that change ever since! There are many things that I think are better than Lightroom: Dedicated layers with layer-masking capabilities. The ability to apply same adjustment tools over and over again. The overall colour control and rendering is superior, in my and many other photographers opinion. Even the fairly new Ai selection tools are many times more accurate than those in LR as well, if you’re into those kinds of things? Due to layers you get much better intersection control between different masks, always live and non-destructive to be tweaked later on, if you want. Each layers have an opacity control that give you more possibilities as well. Capture One have given me much less need for a pixel editor such as Photoshop or Affinity when working with photography.
Or perhaps tried and true? But, hey, in case you’re curious, Ps Beta offers around 20 Parametric Filters that I covered a few months ago: studio.ruclips.net/user/video9W5Q7BZKE6k/edit
I thought the video looked interesting but the outdated, open mouth, clickbait thumbnail stopped me watching. It's an instant, 'don't recommend channel' click from me. So cringy.
"Is this the end?" I rely on you for all things Photoshop. Pleast stop the clickbait. I know you're not switching. You've only just started the new Photoshop One-on-One course.
😂 Sorry, but I gotta 😂! RUclips now lets me test 3 thumbnails each week. (And you gotta admit, that one’s hilarious.) So let me state, unequivocally, Ps is not literally getting trounced by a hulking AF against some kind of fiery apocalyptic background. *Except* where this week’s topic is concerned, Live Filters, which are indeed several times better than anything comparable in Ps. Adobe, if they have any sense, will get working on this feature immediately! Oh, and yes, I created that thumbnail in Photoshop. 😂 I’m dead.
I wasted $$ on Affinity hoping it could replace Adobe but it just doesn't have the pro features - like indicating master pages, AI art generation, none of the publishers i work with support it, and i don't see a way of starting a new document using whatever is on my clipboard. It's a good program for beginners but I don't see enough pro features for me.
Sounds like you’re talking about Affinity Publisher? If so, I haven’t dug into that one yet. As for Affinity Photo, you have File > New from Clipboard.
I have never come across such a remarkable software. I exclusively use Adobe for generative fill, and if Affinity were to incorporate AI capabilities, it would be an incredible development.
Yes, Krita is capable of doing that. However, I have a strong preference for Affinity. After watching Deke's videos, I gave Affinity a try and was impressed by its smoothness and lack of lag. If you're using a Wacom tablet, you'll find the experience to be very smooth. The only drawback of Affinity Photo is its lack of AI capabilities. I'm considering canceling my Creative Cloud subscription in the near future.
@@psdtouch In my research, Affinity Photo has been clear from the outset that its intention was quick response time. And it seems to be largely delivering.
@@dekeNow So again, some invention to extract cash from people. PS is a well-thought-out programme, and all these "improvements" reduce the final quality of the effect because in the process people lose understanding of how the various filters work and what can really be achieved with them.
Except for CMYK support, GIF editing and export, 3D elements, UI consistency just off the top of my head. I gave it a good try, but it’s not replacing PS in a good while. I wish it did, Adobe sucks.
Uhm… it does have CMYK support and UI consistency is definitely better in Affinity than Adobe. Ever tried creating a gradient in Ps then in Ai. Their suite is developed in chunks, and big chunks of Ps are left back in the 2000s. I guess GIFs, 3D and some sort of auto selection capability would be nice to have, but I’d take Affinity’s UI over Adobe’s any day of the week.
One of the coolest features of Affinity Photo is that it doesn't have the Adobe logo anywhere, not even on startup!

There are additional filters that are available as static options in the Filters menu. Bilateral Blur comes to mind. There may also be plug-ins?
very cool video deke... hopefully this incentivizes adobe to start adding some of these cool features to photoshop 💪
I’m hoping so, too!
I'm so use to the UI in photoshop. It does the job. I have enough work that can justify the 10 per month cost.
Well, there you go!
When Affinity has free generative fill I'll use it. Krita does via plugin.
Does Krita do actual generative fill (select and retouch within context of active multi-layered composition) or OpenAI-style image generation?
@@dekeNow Krita does generative fill yes. You can either configure it to use a comfy ui based local fill or connect to their cloud but that does require credits. I use the local option which is free and gives you more freedom as it has no filters. It's very handy. It's called Krita AI Diffusion. Totally free. I cancelled my photoshop subscription :)
Looking Good Master Deke
Thank you!
Adobe has systematically raised prices, gone to a subscription model and assumed they could invade our privacy even to taking our work.
Enough is enough.
The photography bundle has been 11,99€ for years.
My impression is that most people complaining about Adobe don't even use it or are too stupid to look for the subscription they really need.
Yours and other similar opinions are what’s making me cast a wider net!
@@raytreat6599 ditto
I wish Serif did a Lightroom/Capture One alternative too
Yeah, agreed. And Bridge. Adobe Bridge is the one program I rely on that I actively resent. Well, Word. And most of Windows. But those aren’t Adobe’s fault. Anyway, I’d welcome Affinity Bridge.
Hello Deke,
considering to buy Affinity, so
is there a way in Affinity to add logo watermark as in Lr on the photo?
Affinity Photo seems to be arranged around graphic design as opposed to photography. I will admit, I don’t know if watermarks are possible, but AF does not compete with Lightroom.
Of course i wait way too long to realize I want to buy one. Congrats on sell out!
It be nice if Affinity had a proper opacity brush slider/mechanic, like every other artist program.
Please explain!
still going back to PS, PS is still better in object selection, so currently Affinity Designer and PS for me
Oh, wow, there’s a combo. (Have you tried the unexpected synergy of copying a few Designer objects and pasting them into Ps as a smart object?) You’ll have to let me know what you think of my upcoming Designer review!
@@EnriqueLUrcia Outside Photoshop? Not built in?
@@dekeNow The script I dowloaded, it is called Advanced-batch-master, it is a .jsx file. in photoshop I created an action that will run the script (file>Scripts>browse...). An interface open in photoshop where you can chose folders which actions tu run, to set a STOP between actions and so on.
@@EnriqueLUrcia So you made it work?
I am still waiting for dds support. Why is it still not integrated?
Is DDS support native to Photoshop? That’s outside my day-to-day, so just curious.
@@GoldenTeeTV Thx for the info!
Can you “edit in” from LR like PS?
Nope. That is currently a big drawback that I’ll be investigating in a future week.
Great video, and I myself am switching to Affinity due to ... being broke. But! Just an FYI: Photoshop does have filter layers like you're showing off! For awhile, maybe a couple years at least. Thanks for the vid!
Ps *does* have filter layers? I’d love to learn where they’re hiding!
@@dekeNow are the adjustment layers not very similar? Now I need to go look!
@@deadxmouth S’all good. No snark taken!
Ok Now I'm interested
Excellent!
Big fan Deke
Thank you!
I use both since decades
That’s the spirit! I now seem to be on the same path.
Please can someone tell me if there is a "ai generative fill"?
No sir
For Affinity Photo? Not built into the software. (Hence, I'm not leaving Ps, just swinging 🙂.) Some commenters are trumpeting Krita, but I don’t think that’s an integrated retouching solution.
No subscription thats good a full buy out thats what we want
I’m hearing a lot of that.
Awesome features.
Agreed!
Not just affinity but even krita has this filter layer feature.
Really? I gotta try this Krita thing (altho I think I’d need to upgrade my graphics card).
@@dekeNow yes,it is but don't expect it to as fast because kria is open-source and it takes time to optimize the features.
I love it Affinity now!
Yay!
Would I like if I could do that in Photoshop? Only if they have a perpetual licence version
Adobe has missed your boat?
@@dekeNow Yes, they have missed a point with they’re doing with subscription model
Do have Affinity Photo AI generative fill, AI background removal and other AI tools that are not 3rd party plugins?
@@dekeNow thanks!
this is very cool, I like it... going to be using them more.. thanks!
but it's hardly a Photoshop killer..
Still I am forced to use both as photoshop still has many features that Affinity doesn't have or doesn't have as robust versions. ie content aware, AI fills, or robust panoramic etc
I really dislike all of the painful legacy crap in photoshop that works like it was a few decades old.. but the new features, the few very robust features, And the ridiculous amount of content for it makes it really hard to drop entirely.
I Don't see that changing soon.
All great points! And insofar as either application moving toward another-as in, one becomes the clear winner (or gets all stompy, as in the thumbnail)-seems unlikely. The very fact that AF is even capable of live filters suggests that it’s engineered differently than Ps.
Can Affinity import and align several images for painting in flashed areas? I. E. real estate editing? No.
Thanks!
@@genegustafson715 Let me know how that fares!
@@dekeNow so far, no good. No feathering on bbrushes, no density adjustment on layers
@@genegustafson715 Are you talking about Feathering/Density on layer masks? If so, try out the editable Gaussian Blur layer effect, which you can apply to a mask. Plus combo masks on a single layer. Must admit, I’m still in discovery mode.
Sadly i need dds support in affinity before i can really leave ps.
You’re the second person to mention this. I know I’m being hopelessly dense, but can you point me to a tut on Ps + DDS?
There is a lot Affinity can do Adobe does not offer - a lot!
I love Affinity
I do not blame you. (Designer TK!)
Affinity? I’d be happy if I were able to paste an image into a selection. I could do that in photoshop 2
For all it's advantages the Suite is missing a slew of little bits like that. Hopefully that Canva money can help change that.
It does *kinda* do it if you have a layer mask set up in advance. You know what’d be fun is to take 10 common Ps tasks and show how to make them work or shoehorn them in AffPh. Lemme know any others!
@@dekeNow thank you. I should very much like a step-by-step procedure on how to do that.
I’d like to see my dialog box when I have panels open on the screen. Dialogs and menus spawn behind panels. They refuse to fix it, it’s been years.
@@stickgarrote8582 Adobe or Affinity? (Not sure I’m tracking this one.)
I didn’t realise people still used adobe ps 💁
Oh, you. Ya did, too!
In my experience, Affinity is a weird mix of great features and advantages on the one hand, but missing the most basic stuff on the other. For example, not even having workable mask overlays.
AF masking is a topic I hope to revisit in the future.
@@dekeNow Look for "How to show red overlay when masking" on the Affinity forum, if you're interested in what I'm referring to. Anyway, thanks for the video!
aHA! Do it Live.
Deke I can see you coming over to the dark side and switching to Affinity
A Photoshop lover like me? 🤔
1 affinity is not a competitor.
2. You still need a raw developer
3. Both have trouble handling huge files
4 photoshop interprets colors better than affinity-at least on raw
So photoshop still wins.
@@freetibet1000 This is all great news! Yay, I have more to look into...😄
The annual subscription will kill Adobe. People want to own software.
Affinity Photo looks very outdated with boring ancient filters from last century. But Photoshop doesn't do anything better. Crazy.
Or perhaps tried and true? But, hey, in case you’re curious, Ps Beta offers around 20 Parametric Filters that I covered a few months ago: studio.ruclips.net/user/video9W5Q7BZKE6k/edit
@@dekeNow The future holds limitless possibilities with AI and non-AI adjustment layers, all driven by custom workflows. ;)
@@flyingdogsoft No doubt!
Content. Good. Thumbnail. Bad.
I thought the video looked interesting but the outdated, open mouth, clickbait thumbnail stopped me watching. It's an instant, 'don't recommend channel' click from me. So cringy.
Response. 😂 YT lets me test three thumbnails, and (surprise!) the extreme one came out the winner.
😂 I’m dead.
Best f* deal.
@@dekeNow thanks I'll check again. I only saw ways of starting your documents of various sizes no reference to clipboard.
I have never come across such a remarkable software. I exclusively use Adobe for generative fill, and if Affinity were to incorporate AI capabilities, it would be an incredible development.
Krita with a plugin can do the generative fill ... for free
@@LV4EVR Krita runs on local hardware, yes? Thx! Plan to look into it in the future.

This is true. Video on this very topic coming soon. AF is not prime time for photographers.
Thanks for joining the revolution!
I’m doing my part!
What are you talking about? Which filter is not in Photoshop?
It’s not a single filter. It’s the way the filters are implemented.
@@dekeNow So again, some invention to extract cash from people. PS is a well-thought-out programme, and all these "improvements" reduce the final quality of the effect because in the process people lose understanding of how the various filters work and what can really be achieved with them.
Once one gets capable in Affinity Photo it blows Photoshop out of the water.
that's what I've been thinking the last few weeks too.
Some features definitely do!
Except for CMYK support, GIF editing and export, 3D elements, UI consistency just off the top of my head. I gave it a good try, but it’s not replacing PS in a good while. I wish it did, Adobe sucks.
@@stickgarrote8582 Affinity Photo does have CMYK support.
Let me stick to my Adobe, I am not impressed at all
