Your tutorials are excellent. With selecting a circle, hold down the shift key to resize the circle, then holding down the spacebar at the same time allows you to move the selection around without letting go, so you can keep making minor adjustments to the size and get it in exactly the right position; at least this is how it works on a mac.
thank u bro been loking for this
wow, selecting by shapes - very new to me and very helpful. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial with many (10) helpful explanations. Your tips are the best.
Absolutely Superb, priceless info & tips, Thks so much
That curve selection function where you convert a selection to a curve and then edit the nodes is amazing. I didn't realise that you could do that. You could also add nodes so that when you move the selection, it's more controllable and not like jelly. Thanks for these tips. Great video.
Thank you for another incredibly useful video. I learn so much every time I watch one of your Affinity videos!
thanks a lot for sharing your well explained knowledge. I have finally understood how the selections work and how to copy bitmap parts from an underlying image
Hi Olivio, I lately switched from Adobe to Affinity and i'm finding on your videos a lot of tricks that are helping me to discover this new world. Thank you very very much for sharing!

You are welcome!
THANK YOU!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You are so welcome
crazy, I was banging my head to the wall ...affinity wasn't selecting the image for me to extend the background because it was placed... and then you just randomly said to open the image itself in affinity and it worked! Many thanks!
Glad I could help!
And now you have more than 60 thousand subscribers.... a half year later..... How did you achieve that? Congratulations!!!
merci
Nice tutorial! Very useful. Is there any way to select multiple shapes in different groups at the same time?
Love the tips, never thought about building a selection in AP via a Shape > Convert to Curves > CTL-Click on Layer = Selection! And I'm a big Affinity Designer user! 😁 Also thanks for the video Index and scroll segments-a helpful addition to your videos!
I guess im asking randomly but does someone know a tool to get back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot the account password. I love any assistance you can give me
@Aarav Clark Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Aarav Clark It worked and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my account!
@Noah Jared Happy to help :D
I noticed after creating a selection, set quick mask and then move tool, you can resize/rotate your selection with handles
Hi Olivio, thank you for your tutorials. Regarding the circular marquee tool, it can be resized by 'Select->Grow/Shrink' via the menu, or 'Ctrl+B' from the Windows PC keyboard. A slider appears that permits resizing; negative values are obviously smaller. Select the 'Circular' Radio Button to ensure it remains a circle. Grow/Shrink should permit resizing all marquees. Hope that helps. I'm presently using Version 1.9.1
Thanks for the info!
Great video. Anyone- when using the pen tool, is there anyway to make the boarders less strong? I've been selecting "smart mode" outlining the area using a lot of small dots, then I hit select and adjust. It works but the boarder is too hard- too clearly defined.
Thanks.
hi! would you do affinity designer tutorial as well? i've made my decision and i use affinity photo now (it can convert pen tool into selection) and, due to the discount, i bought designer as well. anyways, loved the tutorial. thanks!
Thanks for this tricks , but I do not find the option substrate you use at 11:08 maybe because of my version of Affinity? I have 1.9.1 (Mac)
brother can you run us through taking a RAW image file and doing some basic edits on it, upsize to 300PPI then export it... because I may be doing extra steps like flattening the image so would be good to see how you do it... thanks m
Yes you can at 5:49. Switch to Quick mode (Q) and then you can transform the selection.
Thank you, i didn't know that. I will try it asap
Hello, I'm struggling to do this where everything is blurred in the bg but the shape in the middle, square, shouldn't be affected. how to do that?
There are the Icon of the subtract , add, divide of shade on the time 11:23 how can i appear the ICONs
When I click 'control' and the outline layer it brings up the drop down menu and does not convert to selection? Running on a Mac, tried command and option and those don't work either. What the heck am I doing wrong???
Hi Olivia, I just got Affinity Photo but I cannot see the Photoshop-type page grid with toolbar at the top somI cannot do much. Any tips please?
Go to View Menu and click on "show context toolbar"
@@OlivioSarikas Thanks Olivio but I’ve been through everything I can see and there’s no MENU visible anywhere. Sorry to be so dumb - I am a retired designer used to Photoshop and can find no way to activate a tool bar with menu options, very humiliating.
Olivio, with the quick mask function did you know you can use the paint brush to alter the selection? You paint in black and white as you would with a mask. :-)
I didn't. I have to update that in an future video :) Thank you 🙏
Thanks for the great videos! Heads up: the word ‘Subtraction’… not ‘Sub-Straction’ (minor correction)
Strangely enough I said that wrong all my life. Even in german 😅
@@OlivioSarikas You're doing great work regardless!
I was expecting a keyboard command to hide the selection, as in CTRL H in Photoshop.
It is very annoying to paint on a selection with the marching ants visible all the time.
I would love that too. Those ants drive me crazy sometimes :)
Select to new layer (ctrl+c,ctrl+v) = ctrl+j.
😯oh! i thought that's only "repeat last copy" - interesting. Thank you :)
@@OlivioSarikas also CTRL+J is the power duplicate command. So when you do the repeat copies using CTRL+J, it remembers the size and orientation of the shape, plus the distance from the previous shape.
What is subtract in the Germanic languages? I have heard a number of people from that region of Europe that seem to all add an additional "S" when they say subtract....as in "sub'-S-tract". Not trying to give Olivio a hard time.....I love his vids and I've learned tons from him. Just saying that it is a common theme among people from that region of Europe....german, belgium, austria.....germanic/danish that all seem to pronounce subtract with the additional "S" in the word. Kind of interest actually.
Maybe it's a common mistake because we have several similar words that are "subst" instead of "subt", like Substantive, Substanz, Substitute and such. ;)
10:57 I don't have those options in Affinity Photo. Running the latest version. I am super annoyed right now.
EDIT: I've figured it out. Right click on the toolbar > customize toolbar > drag the geometry pane into the toolbar
Why Serif have decided to hide these by default is beyond me.
But can you turn a normal selection into path?
You mean a vector path? I don't think so. You can however turn a vator shape into a selection
@@OlivioSarikas Yes, I have been waiting for this for years now. It is an essential feature for visual development but despite numerous threads (mine and others) it goes ignored. As much as I do not like installing the ridiculously oversized and intrusive Abode alternative (it is a horror) this is a deal breaker function. Similar to its channel manipulation. I hoped the last couple of upgrades would see to it - I run to see if its added- true image functions! But no, it’s some lame font manipulation or frames or other sub professional function. AH, a boy can dream. 😃
How do you soften the edges of a cutout photo ?
Use the Select Feather menu command and set to about 5 pixels (or use the Shift+F6 keyboard shortcut)
@@markorafferty876 Thank you. I tried but it only worked when the selection was on the whole photo.
If for instance i cut out selection first then later use the Feather Menu, it doesn't work.
@@kojokojo7523 if the image is on an "Image" layer this will happen, such as when you use the command "File | Place" to insert an image. Olivio mentions this right at the start at 0:38 that you will have issues with Image layers, so you need to right click the layer and select Rasterise and convert it to a Pixel layer. Convert the layer and then try selecting the part of the image you want and use the Feather command again. I've played with this and if the Image is on an Image layer it will paste the whole image and not the selection, so you need to convert the layer to a Pixel layer, so it can select pixels and not the whole image. I hope that helps :-)
@@markorafferty876 thank you so much
@@kojokojo7523 no problem and it's nice to help other people out :-)
Great tips. Thank-you. You're adding an extra "s" when you pronounce subtract. It's sub-tract not sub-stract. I hope this is not an offense. I also speak Spanish and appreciate it when someone corrects my errors.
Funny thing: I have done this my whole life. Once in a while I remember it's actually without the s and it confuses me, because i'm so used to it with the s in there. 😅
The word is sub tract not substrack
Sorry Olivio - I didn’t notice predictive rest feminised your name.
