    What a great makeover! 2 suggestions- the coffee cart looks great, just needs to be painted- either white to be part of the cabinets or black. And the plant on top of the cabinets...keep in mind it will dry out fast..heat rises. To avoid having to climb up there so often.. put plant in pretty pot run a long length of yarn, cord or rope from the middle of the potting soil through the drain hole. then find a 9x13 cake pan with a lid.. cut 2 holes- set the pot on top of lid & run cord through a center hole.. then have a 2nd hole big enough for a watering can spout.. fill the cake pan with water..the plant will suck up water as needed. You will have to experiment how long it takes to use a whole pan of water. Should be at least a few weeks. Oh, another tip..lay wax paper across the whole top of the cabinets.. you'll be happy when you go to clean & just have to throw the paper away... because grease & dust rise too. Can't wait to see your next project.

    • @_papad8434
      @_papad8434 26 дней назад

      Yes, cheap is definitely a word that I would use to describe Valspar paint. A few years ago I painted the front of my stucco house per request of my HOA. (I really would rather have done siding instead, but didn't have the money or the time to go thru HOA process, so I painted as requested.) I used Valspar paint. Result? Eh. So so. This year was having my mother's porch painted. I ok'd the painter to use Valspar. Next door neighbor with adjoining porch hired the same guy. THEY used Behr paint. It was like night and day. THEIR Behr paint job looked like silk. MY Valspar paint job looked like it was painted with Elmer's glue...The rest of Mom's house is being done with Behr paint. And the porch will eventually be redone with Behr paint.

    I love how your mom's kitchen came out. I have the exact kind of non-wood cabinets and painting them and not using that Valspar primer made my paint come off quickly especially around my cabinet hardware. I also have those railings up above that you removed. I may decide to do that too. Doing it under $100 is incredible. I'm always afraid of remodel or updating because of cost. You inspired me to do it without worry about money! Thank you!

    The lowered counter may not have been a desk, but instead a baking counter. The lower counter height allows you to look down into the larger Kitchen Aid stand mixer bowl and also can be a better height for rolling out pastry in the home kitchen. And with no cabinet below you can stand closer to your work surface.

    • @karencox3235
      @karencox3235 5 месяцев назад +4

      You're probably right, my kitchen has a built in table that is much lower than a standard counter and I LOVE it for rolling/kneading dough, etc. It's much easier to work at because of it's height.

    😮😱 oh my God, thank you so much for doing this🙏🏻 I am 64 years old and I was an apprentice carpenter painter in my 20s but I never forgot the things I learned. I have ugly brown pressed wood cabinets that I was told I could not sand down. Now I’m going to follow your directions clean them up and use that primer that you have recommended. And then paint my cabinets a sage green. Because I painted the ceiling white, the walls are very light, avocado, green, and because this is a Victorian, the bottom part is a grayish white more white than anything, but because of that you can see that there is definition in the kitchen, but now the cabinets are a big eyesore. We rent so I didn’t want to have to spend too much. Now you have given me the blueprints on how to do it bless your heart thank you so much.😁🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I’ve become one of your followers

I love the boys of black like the knobs and chair backs. So little done to make such an impact. I would definitely be having my morning coffee right there at the breakfast bar and I’d put me some nice big thick cushions on them too to accent my nice new kitchen. Oh!!! I love the idea with the command strips too. That’s going to help me and my crafting so so much. Also if she takes a little material and makes herself a little top curtain or the French shade would be beautiful and if she matched the cushion on her stools to her little shade/curtain that would just make everything look so much more high end and tie the whole kitchen/eating area right in

    Looks fabulous!!
    Wondering a few things:
    Did you pull off the wallpaper or prime & paint right over it?
    How do you reach the plants so high up to water them regularly?
    The metal stove hood: It gets greasy & dirty pretty easily, so how is the primer & paint for scrub-cleaning?
    How many gallons of primer & paint did you use? 2 coats of paint would be needed.
    A gallon of paint or primer is $70 + tax up here in Canada, so it would cost a few hundred on primer & paint alone but still worth it for such a transformation.

Using white, and plenty of it is never wrong. :) :) Anyone can add in and change around many things of any colors any time when white paint is used. And using white paint makes the room so inviting, so bright and cheery and clean. imo it's like a piece of white linen; just so pretty on its own, and goes with any color. :)

    I'm new and so grateful to have found you! I'm facing a similar update in my kitchen and knowing about that primer is gold! My cabinets have a weird, southwestern medallion in the middle of each so painting is going to take massive amounts of patience. I can do it if I don't have to sand every nook and cranny! Cleaning is enough - with a little sanding.
    One thing I can't help but mention - your parents refrigerator is really cutting into the room. It's beautiful and probably new - perhaps they could sell it and get a counter depth one? I had this problem in my old kitchen and the change made a world of difference. Plus, I didn't actually sacrifice any space in the fridge! I'd say it had at least as much impact on the look and feel of the kitchen as refacing and adding functionality did.
    Thanks again for the info and inspiration!

    FYI - since this is a mobile home, I found if you remove the strips that hide the wallboard seams and fill them with caulk or spackle, then paint the wall, it makes it look more like drywall than the wallboard.

    Wow, only seven minutes in and I’ve already seen two tips that I will definitely use. I will buy that primer you recommend, and I’m thrilled to learn that if the hinges are on the inside, I don’t have to remove the doors! That was the main thing that was making me Dismiss the possibility of Painting ugly cabinets.

    It would have been great at the end to show the before and after again just before you signed off! I love how updated just putting coat of paint and covering up the wallpaper made the place feel so fresh

    So just right! No overly decorated. My Mom has the same green thumb with the same house plant. Well done.

    The kitchen looks beautiful now. Bright and white. Maybe the little nook is crying out for another shelf to bridge the gap between the bottom of the cupboards. Some more underneath would look great too. Youve done a great job!

    Fantastic job, looks 100 times better.😁 I’m in the process of doing this in the UK, however it needs a bit more diy. It’s an old house, over 300 years old! Looking forward to the transformation though 😁

    You should be proud of yourself. What a remarkable transformation on a small budget. You were good to show us the primer phase. On the next project, I hope you’ll show at least some of the painting phase, including how you handled the backsplash and walls. Your decision to leave the chair seats was inspired. They came out looking appropriate to the project and so expensive. Thank you for sharing your talents.

    I like the cabinets. Very nice. Genius how you covered that opened space!
    I like how you painted the chairs, however, since the counter tops are a brownish color & the tile around the cabinets are another brown color, I think all black chairs would look much better cause now you have four different colors going on (2 tones of brown, plus the chairs which are now maple & black).

    I love what U all did with this kitchen ,just beautiful .I think I would put handles and pulls for the doors and drawers in the terra cotta backsplash .They make a zillion different ones and U can really play with it and add some whimsy and cuteness lol

    I just happened to stumble upon your video and decided to watch it.
    I think you did a wonderful job with your mom's kitchen. I'll admit I don't care for all the white, but even still you did a great job! and the chairs! great again.
    i have no imagination so I have to live vicariously through those that do. great job!
