Summer Bass Fishing Tricks: Swimbaits and Crankbaits!

- The bite is wide open! Come along as we catch fish on big swimbaits, crankbaits, and underspins! We're exploring where fish position on offshore and deep water structures in Summer, and putting the words to action on these Summer bass, as we catch them one after another!
A lot of anglers are intimidated by fishing offshore. Without the shoreline to cast toward it can be scary to move around in the open water searching for fish. But in reality, with decent mapping and a little confidence, its really easy to catch bass away from the bank. Matt teaches where these fish are positioning, then proves it by catching a pile of fish along the way.
Below you'll find links to the exact baits used in the video. We've included our favorite colors for each (the color we caught them on today listed first), as well as the gear and equipment we used to fish the baits effectively. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Best bass fishing channel hands down! Matt actually fishes and catches bass on the baits they suggest. Not many channels do that. A lot RUclips angler’s are hall of famers sitting on dry land.
MATT!!!! You blow my mind. You get out there on that lake on really any lake. You just flat out read that lake and just flat smashing um!!!!!!
Amen on that highland reservoir! Rock and points are key! Add a underwater structure and that’s where they are.
Thanks Matt we appreciate the awesome content you and Tim push out for us everyday. Ive definitely learned a hundred different things over the years that help me catch bass and other species day by day thanks to you guys. Keep up the great work. stay cool out there God Bless and tight lines.🤙
Not all anglers have boats and can get to the deep water so easily. In that case, there's still a couple of things you can do to get your bait out to that deeper water. First, make sure your rod and reel are setup for maximum casting distance. A spinner is ideal in these situations; with 10 lb braid to a 10/12 lb fluoro leader. On a 7' medium power rod, you can bomb a 1/2 oz lipless crank a mile. Secondly, try to find places you can make casts that provide a deeper drop off to that deeper water. A 45° drop is ideal and you can fish a squarebill against the bottom and bring it back to you. I've had a lot of good success working that pattern this summer.
Especially on highland reservoirs. Lots of them have cliffs with access to channel swings from land.
I would really suggest anyone that doesn’t have access to a boat either try to find an old cheap rowboat or a cheap kayak. I don’t think I’ll bank fish again after getting out in the kayak
@@devinwillis7787 I was in a kayak for 3-4 years. I have a cheap jumbled together flat bottom with a trolling motor now. Within a few years I'll have a boat with a gas motor to fish bigger lakes..... If you can get out onto the water it's an addiction!
@@nothing-xk8vr absolutely. I have a friend on a tight budget who bought a 1950s row boat for 100 bucks on Facebook and gets out into our reservoirs and catches monster pike. No way he could get the ones he has from shore. I have a fairly high end kayak just because the location I’m in gives me a ton of options for kayaks over a bass boat
@@nothing-xk8vr I’ve got a kayak as well and it makes a big difference. But sometimes I really crave the extra space and stability of a Jon boat or row boat. Yes you can get one for cheap if you keep an eye on Craig’slist etc. The $$ comes in the trailer…. A bit harder to find those use for a good price. And then there’s the pickup truck you need to tow it…
Its amazing how I'm just viewing this video after being on the water all day and not even to my suprise Matt and I are using damn near the exact same lures. 😅 you guys have really taught me well.
When August hits I fish for other things. White perch, striper, and catfish. I hate fishing August on my home lake. Bites are scarce. I don't have an ultrex or forward sonar, don't need it really, but offshore fishing and suspended fish this time year, I can certainly see the benefit to having it. Tight lines
If I want to watch a fishing video I will always go Tactical Bassin. I absolutely love Matt and Tim. Best information over anyone else. Thanks guys.
Fishing the grass lines with a swim bait or a swim jig off a shelf is by far my favorite place to work those baits.
I 🖤 summer bass fishing and I love that summer 🔥! Post thunderstorm in the cypress tree frog was on for me yesterday 🐸🎣
Anyone else hyped to get their hands on the new tactical wake?
Goodmorning guys always love waken up to some new info might have to throw some big stuff after work today!
Hello Matt and Tim, I caught my first 2 fish on the S-waver 168 in the lite trout color on July 29th 2022. The first was a 4 pound smallmouth and the 2nd was my biggest smallmouth yet at 5 pounds. These catches have cemented my confidence in this lure but what really impressed me was 3 birds tried to eat the S-waver also, 2 of which were successful in picking it up out of the water which shows the quality of how well the lure represents a real fish.
Thank you,
Justin and Rubeth Garner of Ontario Canada
Hey Matt! I’ve been following you guys for about 2months now and I have to say you guys are awesome for the information and everything you guys talk about I go out and try to get a lil better every time. Thank you for the content it’s awesome and I learn something new every video!
I’m addicted to this channel. You two have been so informative it’s crazy. Thank you for sharing your love of the sport and the knowledge you continue to gain with the world.
You really smoked em Matt, another great day on the water. Thank you.
Matt, another great video, thanks for sharing. I find the July/August fishing is really tough in South Florida especially in ponds. I live on an approximately 2 acre pond that is about 1 mile around. It’s long and narrow and more canyon style. The north part of the pond is around 10-15ft and the ledge within feet of the shore is 10-15 feet. Down the middle the pond is 20-25 feet. On the South end, the lake has two deep pits. One at 55ft and the other around 45ft. There is no real cover or weeds along the shore. I have tried fishing early and late as well as during the day. I have thrown everything you do, frogs and poppers, senkos, Ned baits, underspin small swim baits, lipless crankbaits, square bills, deep diving crankbaits, and even power bait swim baits on umbrella rigs. I have only caught peacock bass at this time of the year especially as water temperature is 88-90 degrees. Any suggestions for canyon style ponds in the Deep South?
Thanks for the vid awesome stuff Matt and my bank account losing weight like a Jenny Craig diet thanks TB 😀
Thanks Matt! Spent the day on Clearlake yesterday. The lake is suffering and the bite was incredibly slow, they just went silent after the sun came up.
Thanks Matt. That was enjoyable to watch. I really like how you show us all the lures you are using and techniques. 👍
Matt and Tim both have a rare combination of fishing skill and teaching acumen.
Excellent! Looks great but Summer time is straight night fishing for me.
Absolutely awesome Matt. Sometimes I give you guys a hard time but just in fun. But I do ask questions sometimes with no response. I know you have a ton of people asking questions but I really would like to connect with you every now and again. I really envy your knowledge, I learn a lot from you. Thanks and stay safe.
Sorry Eddie, with the recent growth it's getting harder and harder to answer every comment but we sure give it our best!
@@tacticalbassin no problem, I know it’s hectic but want you to know that y’all are the best out there. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge on the the water I learn so much watching your videos. I just wish I could get to the water more often but I’m retired and am really blessed but still the way this economy is I have to be careful you know! Keep the videos coming and stay safe.
Your on it as always! Thanks Matt for all your knowledge that you share.
That's no chop. Lol from oklahoma here that's the calmest ever here. Want to be at the right time with right bait
CONGRATULATIONS ON A HALF A MILLION SUBS!!
Appreciate the videos as always. I was wondering if explaining cranking casting angles would be a video you guys possibly do in the future.
That along with boat control, setting up on fish in relation to your graph, and summertime suspended fish over deep water are topics that hardly ever get mentioned. I agree that would be a great subject for many video's
Looks like a great session. Some awesome tips as always. Thanks so much for sharing your insight with us, Matt!
Bank fishermen, if you don't know the depths, POLITELY ask anglers on the water for Intel. Some lakes have topos available. Take pictures of your local body of water as the levels drop so you can record best spots when the water level rises again.
How many hours of fishing do you typically do to get 20+ minute video of catching? I do more fishing than catching. You make it look easy!
Tiger by the tail👊🤣👍
Very nice! I love your videos first thing in the morning.
That burrito looks niiiice
Awesome video Matt I'm getting ready to go fishing and got a big crankbait tight on in a swim bait and a big worm
Hi Matt! I like The Who dat color you recommended but I wondered if you have a date when Tackle warehouse might have the Tactical Shad color in stock. Thank you for All You Do😁
Very, very soon 🤞
Also I needed this video for tomorrow 😊
Man I wish I had your luck! My dad and I went out to Lake Murray this past week end and we got shut out. Not even a bite. Appreciate these tips regardless.
Went out and smoked em on the frog and powershot rig yesterday!
Fishing is more complicated than I ever imagined.
The new Wake comes in tomorrow am!!
Matt I was fishing on Havasu and tail hooked a 22 pound carp definitely thought it was my PB lol 😆
This morning, I thought I had a double-digit for about, oh...4.7 seconds. I did manage to bring my PB Softshell turtle to the bank, though..so there's that. At least I got my frog back.
I wish it was in the 90s here in Texas. We’ve been triple digits damn near every day for months. I don’t even run AC. Can’t afford the electric bill. People on my towns FB group say they’re paying $500 and $600+ electric bills.
I went out yesterday and the water temp was 92F
I literally threw everything and couldn’t get a bite.
I’m in Florida
I know they say in the heat of summer to really slow down, but do you find that the bass are still willing to chase the moving baits even on the hot hot days?
HIGH 90’S?! I’d pay to have that it’s 105 here
Do you do braid to leader with soft swimbaits or straight fluorocarbon?
Matt what camera are you using for this video?🤙
Have you done any reviews of the mega bass levante leviathan swimbait rods
Why 65lb line on that jig rod? I understand for punching but not for offshore
How about a bank fishing video, for us bank walkers?
They've done several; here's the most recent: ruclips.net/video/s-uQ2P_-ozk/видео.html . I think a Bank Anglers Buyers Guide would be a great addition, too. Search their archive for bank fishing videos; there are some good ones in there. Good luck!
Matt it don't look like you are letting that bait go down to where you said those fish are your in 18' you said the fish were at the break I'm guessing 20' -23' you are reeling ad soon as the bait hits the water .Are those fish coming up to hit that bait? Please explain
Matt or Tim, I can't remember but do guys have any videos talking about soluble oxygen levels in Reservoirs?
This is a very interesting topic that i would enjoy learning more about. If my wife doesn’t go into labor I’ll be heading to Norris lake on Wednesday to catch striped bass and the guide was talking about oxygen levels a lot and how the striper react to them. Curious if the green and brown bass are equally influenced by it.
@@michaelgregory7457 I think they would have to be. I know my home lake, Lake Monroe in Bloomington Indiana it's soluble oxygen level is about 22ft down meaning you just don't catch hardly anything past that depth. I don't know a whole lot about it but am hoping they do lol.
@@420RyanBruce interesting. Yeah I would imagine they are influenced by it to some extent, just not sure what the exact patterns would be to stay on them. Norris lake in east tn is our cleanest, clearest, and deepest lake but our guide was telling us last year that by mid/end of summer the striper have less water to roam due to the water temp and oxygen, most of the striper and a few smallmouth were caught at the thermocline which was around 50’ of water and slightly above it. The fish had empty stomachs and we were told the oxygen levels and water temps make it tough on the fish come July. On my home lake in middle Tennessee the fish don’t seem to like shallow water at all except for when they come in briefly twice a day to feed now that water temps are so high. There are so many variables, I’d love to hear Matt and Tim discuss it.
@@michaelgregory7457 hopefully they see this and do an in depth episode explaining. That would be freaking awesome
Are largemouth apart of sun fish family?
What recommendations do you have for guys that don't use electronics? Also....I don't know what you mean by "reservoirs"... I'm new to all this
Loved the video Matt! Question, what would be a good budget recommendation for the underspin rod? Is that dark sleeper rod from megabass more of a medium power type rod, tackle warehouse doesn't list the power just the action for that one.
This might help: ruclips.net/video/hPwXQ1_r9UI/видео.html , They list the Bass-X 7-1 as a budget alternative for a general-purpose underspin rod. Good luck out there!
@@oldeschoolbob1022 thanks!
we are factory of underwater fishing lights
The Bacca Burrito Swimbait is 2.8oz, you were using the expride 7’7” A rated up to 2oz. The new 7’7” B you have listed is only rated up to 1 and 1/2 oz. Most of the B’s have different lure rating’s than the A’s. People on forums are saying some in the line are stiffer. Bring back the A’s
He's using the 5" burrito not the 6"... the link to TW link doesn't have the 5" I was confused at first as well
Scheduling mishap... that link is correct and will have both the 5" and 6" burritos any minute 😎 TW just started carrying them.
I think Mike Bucca might be doing a collab with them? the description said 5inch and the regular bait is 6inch also there is no tactical shad so... I wonder and hope. Plus that bait in the video looks smaller. @tacticalbassin can you guys confirm or deny?
Confirmed on all counts 😉 More to come on that very soon.
Were you drag that bucca on the bottom or hopping it on bottom?
How often did you re-tie today?
Hey Matt I heard that there was a good frog🐸 bite going on at Lake Nickajack right now!!
How often are you retying between bigger fish?
Senko
Offshore is my weakness. I often can find fish but never get bit. Can't figure it out.
#me too bro
I'm right with ya... looking right at them with the livescope and.... catch nothing but a tan
Almost every comment says you are a winner, have you heard Matt or Tim say there was a contest 🤔
Ugh, we battle that spam non stop every day. We're so sorry!!
Help I know you have mention that 22 foot crankbait but I couldn’t find that so I got the 20 foot . Is that ok ?
Dude 2 ft doesn't matter
@@tims_always_fishing7117 I found two 20 footers on eBay for $14
2nd
I want to pay 10-15 dollars a month and have someone give me a month to month plan to catch bass in my area... period.
Firsts
You make fishing look too easy
65 LB. Braid on that little rod? Seriously? What is the hurry - tournament mentality. Why the handles on the wrong side of that reel? Calvary Cross Draw?
Matt have you been hacked
We haven't been hacked at all, it's a look alike. That's the back end stuff you guys don't see... these kinds of attacks happen all day every day. We're on it but once in a while one slips through for a few minutes.
Not the first time this has happened lol if you gave a gift to everyone you would have to tackle warehouse

Same with me. Fished for a week and only caught two peacock bass on an umbrella rig. Largemouth bass are just not biting in this heat!
