Swinging Jigs For Summer Bass (Tips That Actually Matter)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Its time to change it up! Summer is here and this technique gets BIG bites when nothing else will. Quit throwing the same old Summer baits and show them something completely different! The swinging jig is easy to fish, doesn't require specialized gear, and most importantly, the big ones eat it!
This technique goes by many names. You may have heard of the wobble head, biffle head, free swinging jig, or swinging jig... all references to the same technique. We combining the swinging jig with either a creature bait or small swimbait to create a profile that bass can't resist. As you swim it along the bottom the bait will bump along, deflecting off cover, and drawing reaction strikes from the bass.
Virtually every brand makes a creature bait that could work with this technique. However, there are a few that rise above the rest. Below you'll find links to all the baits, heads, and gear discussed in the video, beginning with the "If you could only have one" bait choice. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Anybody else in the world snags on those rocks in the beginning of the video.
No problem for Matt 🤣👍
Dude is money 💰
I snagged just thinking about it 😂
That’s the beauty of a wobble head, it doesn’t get hung up on rocks easily
@@paulkimble6223 I could find a way 🤣
@@TheMichiganFisherman lol I hear ya
And where do you find lakes that slime free?
Who would give this video a thumbs down??? Love your videos man! You guys have taught me soooo much! Thank you!!!
Thank you!!
Thanks Matt, I went out for the fist time in two years to a barrage in North Africa (Morocco) the water was very clear, normally it is dark so I am used to throwing spinnerbaits. Luckily I had my Lowrance with me so I noticed they are way deeper then otherwise near the bank in the shade even in the place with current there werent any reaction on my baits at all, throwing a texas rig worm / spinnerbait... so finally I caught some small bass on a dropshot, but 2 years ago I had a day of more then 50 pounds in just 13 fish (the bass here is probably Northern strain) SOOOO big thanks for this video, I gonna reorganise my floattube bags and plan my next trip!!!
Awesome video love the wobble head. The 6th sense stroker craw is a good trailer too.👍🏻
Great video, Matt! I know of no other source of detailed, technique-specific information like this.
Can’t tell you how good this technique actually is. I went camping at dale hollow last week, took my hobie. I did horribly for 2 days, then i started catching some small ones on a drop shot and a bitsy bug. Then for some reason i found some wobble heads and rigged one with a jordan lee berkley hd craw…with floating pincers. I started catching some bigger fish in that rocky ultra clear water. Great vid, great tips.
Awesome! Way to put it together 👊
I'm in central Florida and fish small lakes and ponds. And typically bottom is at best sand and grass. But this technique certainly works. And also works great in middle of the night.
My husband and I are NEW to Central Florida and looking forward to small pond and lake fishing. Do you have any favorites to recommend around Orlando, Winter Garden, Clermont, Oconee, etc. Most seem really large, looking for smaller public ones.
I use the bigger Biffle Hardheads w/either a Strike King Rage Bug or Berkley Pit Boss. In sunshine, I prefer the Rage Bug in green pumpkin (claws tipped orange) or watermelon/red flake. In darker skies, murkier water, and in late winter/early spring, I use the Pit Boss in either Big Texan or Green Perfection. The best locale for this technique is LOGJAMS in the outside bends of creek backs. Bass love logjams! The key is to STROKE IT. Hop it HIGH, then let it fall back. GUARANTEED to put fish in your boat!
I’m ready for a summer crankbait video
I've watched every crankbait video they've put out and I still struggle to catch fish on them...
You reel them in.
@@xDx0xUxGx have you tried reeling your reel? -_- are you powering it in at 100mph? Fish it at a speed that looks like a swimming fish. Ignore the tournament guys who fish baits at 100mph that is searching
@@ThatSB I've tried slow, medium and fast all with and without occasional pauses and occasional quick partial reel turns. I've tried deep and shallow, digging them into the bottom and off the bottom. I've also tried fishing them the same way you would quickly fish a jerkbait. For whatever reason I rarely have success with crankbaits. Almost every fish I have caught on a crankbait has been while running the bank with a squarebill.
@@xDx0xUxGx Idk I think most people consider them the easiest bait so that is surprising. It looks and swims like a fish and sets the hook for you lol. You dont even need to drag bottom just swim it and straight reel is fine too. To never get bites is strange. Maybe you are using the wrong colors for your area? But ive caught fish on damn near every color I think they just hate crankbaits waddling their way through the pond. I do best on crankbaits over the top of deep weeds. Dont worry too much about square vs round. Majority of the time it doesnt make that much difference unless you are getting hung up alot and need to get over timber in which case the square bill is better for its more gradual dive
Love the videos. Use most of your guys stuff. Since I'm in NASHVILLE. AND use it on our lakes here in Tennessee. I'm gonna try this 1 in my next video I do. I appreciate all the help you give to everyone out there. Been a big help to me
Zoom 8” lizard in those same colors, will catch the same except ,they will be bigger fish. Thank you
When Matt brought out the keitech my head went *kaboom!*
“Attached with freedom”🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hanging by a thread…
FACTS
My top three favorite baits for a wobble head would a bandito/Rage bug, zoom Z-craw,powerbait pit boss. I could make a case for basically any plastic that can be Texas rigged. A ribbontail worm can really be deadly.
“It’s attached with freedom” hell yeah brother
I could watch Matt narrate paint drying and I’d be interested the whole time. He is THAT entertaining
Great to be back watching these videos! Finally out of a 295 day streak of work. 😄 now time to get on the water!
you need some R&R (rod and reel)
Wtf were you doing working 295 days straight?
great content as usual, how long is your leader for this technique? Thanks
Just tried this rig yesterday, and it made me a believer, first time out. I’ve used the technique deep in the winter with a Keitech fat swimbait with great success also.
This was the first technique I ever stumbled on that would later be confirmed by a reputable fishing program. My experience has been that I catch bigger fish in the post spawn with this rig. I believe you are right about it fooling the fish. A magnum rage bug is killer.
Hoping to see a video on the full moon of June coming up!
I use alot of these, the problem is when the lake is getting full of weeds, it's use can be very limited.
Agreed
Yes, weeds are definitely the Achilles heal of this technique.
Hope you got a chance to watch KVD put on a ledge cranking clinic there on Chick! It was something! Maybe you could do a vid on cranking ledges? Forgive me if you have already.
What an EXCELLENT video. I hung on every word, loved it! Do you absolutely need a dedicated jigging rod for this? I have several nice medium heavy fast rods. Lew's mach series and Lew's Custom Pro Speed Stick series. I'm trying not to buy another combo until Fall season.
This one of my favorite techniques...i prefer that vmc rugby head with a a straight shank hook..i feel like i lose less fish with that hook
Awesome video! I’ve been hopping the kvd structure head with a man bear pig and caught a 4 pounder! Which is a big fish where I live. Gonna buy some of these baits for sure though. And is the mega bass brailist that much better than the 7 ft 5 medium heavy zodius? The brailist is good for all bottom right?(jigs, swing heads, texas rigs)
I would pay to come fishing with you guys! Mainly just to see and use all the absolutely gnarly gear and tackle you have! You guys kill keep it up
Great information as always! I downsized the presentation and applied it to Ozark streams with great success! Keep em coming!!!
I won my first highschool bass tournament on this style hook before it got popular. I believe it was 2007. I think arkie jig made the hook. It had a ball style weight with a regular worm hook. Fishing it off island ledges and shallow flats. I remember all the adults couldnt believe i caught all my fish on that hook with a finesse worm. Great memory
I literally just rigged up some swinging heads earlier today then i see this video with 3 of the 4 exact baits i rigged up!! Awesome, have a really good feeling with that paca craw and my custom white menace grub
Another great video Matt, thanks for giving us your great knowledge about bass, lures and techniques to put more into the boat. Your tips are invaluable and appreciated.
Hey Matt, do you consider the Jika Rig as pretty much the same style of rig as a swinging jig??? Seems pretty much the same to me.
Thanks for the new technique! QUESTION: would this work for spotted bass on Lake Shasta in CA?
Yes 👍
Beast Coast Swing Head (discontinued) with a Reaction Innovations Man Bear Pig (Tramp Stamp) is one of my summer go-to’s! Good luck finding those colors in the Adrenaline Craw. Thanks Matt!!
My favorite is Berkley crazy legs chigger craw
I agree with you about junebug. That's my favorite color hands down. This year though I found a cotton candy color lizard and I've been catching a ton with it.
I haven't really thrown them on rock but I have been Flippin them into submerged and semi submerged trees and that's how I've been catching em on the wobble head with a baby paca
Where you doing that at? My lake has a lot of that right now...very high.
@@Jcestanley I'm in Mexico, I unfortunately haven't had the time to make a video and up load it but you'll be able to find it on my channel
What factors make you choose a swing head over cranking? Time of year, water clarity, target species, waterbody type? Or do you just prefer the swing head over cranking in most situations?
Two factors would be fishing pressure and fish depth. If the fish are constantly seeing crankbaits bang past them then this is a completely different look and sound. These by nature of being a jig head based lure can be fished much deeper than even the deepest diving crankbait could ever reach.
Love the videos, thank you for all the hard work. Question, where is the river boat you guys showed off when you moved to TN?
Oh it's here and it's getting a work out. Still learning these backwaters and how to get around but vids will follow sooner than later.
HELP PLEASE!! What would you guys recommend for a bottom contact bait in a small lake/ large pond that has a moss covering the bottom. Another great video thank you.
I’ve been trying to figure that out in the UP for years with zero successes.
You could try the tokyo rig, neko rig, or drop shot to get bait up off the bottom and out of moss or slime
I have swim baits in the boat. Been just bumping them along the bottom. I can’t wait to try this technique on Lake of the Ozarks!
I am primarily a bank angler and I throw this rig quite often especially on those hot summer days when the fish are out far and near the bottom. It kills!
awesome vid Matt! I started wobble head fishing bout 2 yrs ago. love it, especially at nite shhhhh! And like you mentioned, i’ve had success with 3.8 keitec as well, not just creature baits. 👍
I had zero confidence in wobble heads before this video. Never caught fish on them and lost confidence in them. Watched the video last night, took the boat out this morning. Tied on 1/2 oz wobble head, Junebug Z-craw with dyed claws. Caught a 2# and 2.5# largemouth plus a few smaller fish using Matt's method over submerged road and railroad beds. Awesome video, awesome advice. Thanks Matt!
Thats awesome! Way to go John!!
Thanks Matt, been waiting on this info before I try it. Right on time.
Great info! IMPHO, if I could only have one, I would go just abit lighter and smaller...I'd go with 3/8oz. with a 3/0 hook. 1/2 oz is abit heavy for pond bank fishing...and the 3/0 hook will facilitate the hooking typically smaller pond bass; but is still adequate for most lake fishing applications. Also, a bait company that gets so little respect and overlooked is Lunker City. Check out their creature bait - Ozmo. Awesome bait, and as good as any of these others on the market.
Been throwing the swim jig in my local area and it’s been smacking! Can’t forget the finesse jig in our reservoirs here too!!
Can I use a swivel or no swivel? Thanks for the info.
Love your videos and watch and listen to them all the time especially while I’m working. The one thing that drives me crazy is the plastic bag crinkling!! I wear headphones and I swear to god you intentionally make the packaging crackle just to add the effect of a new bag or whatever it is your showing 😂😂
Awesome Matt!!! I have thrown the swing head jig with no luck but this is definitely motivation to catch my new P.B. on it! Thanks for the awesome content as always! Tight lines y'all!

How do you keep the fish hooked? I started with a heavy action moderate tip with braid and boated 25%. Now I use medium action moderate tip with 15lb mono I let them have it a few seconds reel down till i feel weight then set thook, and still loose more than half. What am I doing wrong? I've fished for 40 years, and this method has the worst catch to hook ratio ever. But it makes em bite.
Have you guy's or anyone else on here tryed this technique with a Lizard.? Im thinking with the ribbon tail and legs it would get alot of action. After watching your alls vidoes for as long as I can remeber now, I finally went and picked up a casting Zodios rod this past weekend so pumped to try it after what all you all have said about them over the years.
Just came across this video. Great content. I throw a lot of different trailers as well with the wobble head, but lately, I've mostly been using the rage tail space monkey.
Why a Football Head? Still can't find when to throw football, round, etc. Can you tell us?
Football heads deflect really hard off cover and give the bait a great action. We can try to put something together on head shapes 👍
@@tacticalbassin Awesome, looking forward to it, and thank you
It's very hard to throw bottom contact techniques here on Delmarva, everything is junk and silt bottoms. 😢 Nice video tho.
Junk is okay, just bury that hook point. Heavy grass is the one thing this technique can't do.
Question on bending hook: are you bending it straight up or a bit to the side?
Why wouldn't you bring wobble heads up north to small mouth fish? Is there a reason or just didn't have room? I remember crushing lake Ontario smallies on craws all summer as a kid
Any additional information on wobble heads with skirts technique-wise?
I'm to break the rules and try throwing one tomorrow in the late fall. Here in SoCal the air temperature will reach upper 70s to low 80s.
Y'all have taught me and so many other anglers on here A TON ....... just wanna say thanks for everything you and Tim both do for us!!!!
Would love if you guys would Come to Ohio and fish with me , tons of smallies and quality large mouths here . Thanks again guys
Thank you!! Perhaps down the road we will, its not that far away 🤔

Not far at all my friend !!! Have a great day buddy
Awesome video, will do this next week at Clear Lake. Your old stomping ground.👍
Awesome way to catch them. My family makes our own heads. Thanks man.
Just got turned on to you guys.. I’m binging all of your vids. Great great stuff! Thank you for you time
Have you ever tried a lizard on one of these swing heads?
ZMan has a really good wobble head style hook called the Texas Eye and it’s awesome for creature style baits check them out
Best vids on you tube. I am out fishing my buddies now 5 to 1. I have to keep Kleenex in the boat for the tears
Nice video
you guys are the best channel for bass ever imo I really like how you explain everything so clearly
Great info, thanks.
Do they work in ponds and what kind of baits would you recommend for the pond and what sizes Matt
What is the difference between a wobble head or a paged Texas rig?
Is that something that would work even on the grassy bottom of Florida?
Is there any way you can post a video that doesn't cost me money? NVM keep em coming 🤪
Great video my man!!! Great breakdown of the technique.
Hi Matt. I watched your video because I haven't had a lot of success with swing head jigs. I rigged one up, went out that same afternoon and caught a nice 4+ lb largemouth. I appreciate the depth of knowledge and amount of detail that you and Tim share. Thanks to you I have a new weapon in my arsenal!
This is great! Way to go Mike!
A 5 inch grub and a big ribbon tail worm also work great if they stop biting a craw creature style bait
I bought some of these the other day. That box you have has to be worth more than my house at $3 a piece lol
You all give soooooo much amazing information and link all the tackle too 🤯🙏!!!!! Thank you all again
Thanks Joel!
Thank you. This video on wobble heads was TB’s best presentation yet. Please keep them coming. Thank you again for keeping it simple.
Thanks Dennis!
Another GREAT video, Matt! I've learned sooooo much since I started following your channel last year! I just ordered a brand new crankbait set-up based off of your recent crankbait video! Thanks for all you guys do, and keep the videos coming! Love them!
We're happy to do it. Thanks for the support, Gary!
Zoom Z craw is the money IMO
The rugby jig+pit boss or a vile craw has (accidentally) caught me more big northern pike up here in Ontario than almost any other pike bait in the summer.
I've had a ton of days when the pike wont hit a jerkbait, wont hit a spoon, wont even wake on a spook but that 3/4oz vmc swing jig and a black/blue pit boss dragged/hopped on bottom on sand flats between weed beds is just something they cant resist...
As far as catching bass w the rugby jig I've had almost zero luck but this fall I'll be camping out on a smallmouth lake like I have been for 6 years and I'm convinced slow rolling a 3/8-1/2oz rugby jig+a keitech is going to be the golden ticket.
Great video Matt. In Last years wobble head vid, you were very high on the Crazzy Flapper but this year it seems to have barely made the cut, so to speak. Wondering if maybe they lose more fish due to the longer appendages? Also, does this work well in dirtier water(12-18” vis) due to all the commotion it causes? Love your content. Great channel.
They don't lose more fish, get bit less, etc... but they don't hold up to abuse. You're going to go through a LOT of keitechs on this pattern. They're deadly effective but the cost/reward influences the recommendation this year. We're constantly fine tuning and trying to give the best recommendation we can.
@@tacticalbassin - that's awesome info and thanks for the quick response. I should have thought of that as Keitechs swimbaits(even though VERY effective) don't seem to hold up to bottom dragging very well. The same plastic composition that makes them fish catchers also leaves them vulnerable to tears etc. I was amazed at how often on Shasta those Spots would bite off a tail and I didn't even feel the fish. 😂
@@danham3344 keitech doesn't but a megabass spark shad works great and holds up better
@@southerngurlfishing2561 - Yes, and spark Shad is exactly what I use under those bottom drag situations (unless I am going tiny with a 2.8. Then I stick with the Keitech)
Maybe a stupid question, but what separates the Orochi from the Expride? Price difference is only roughly $20 so was wondering how they differ. Have money saved up for a 7'2 MH expride when it comes back in stock and don't know if should just get the Orochi. PS - first higher end rod that I'm buying that isn't a swimbait rod and looking for a kind of do everything set up.
So, basically a Texas rig with a pegged weight to stay at the hook.
Have you tried putting a Culprit Fat Maxx/big profile curl tail worm , or a lizard on a swing head and had success? BTW. Lifting that swing head box looks like a good workout. Thanks for a good vid!
Matt, is there a finesse setup for this on lighter line? I guess I could not fish deeper on 7-10 lb FC. So what is the heaviest swing jig for under 10lb test and what depth does that fall into? I am heading way up north and the bass rarely get over 3-4 lbs. Mostly 2lb fishing. Thanks.
You know if someone would offer the service of taking you out to fish for the day- and I mean for a reasonable price where you don't have to book a multiple day trip or anything like that- someone who would just take you out for a simple day of bass fishing for a price- I would keep them in business single handedly. I'm not talking about a guided trip either, wouldn't expect them to put me on fish or show me what to throw or how to do it- none of that, I'm talking like just going fishing with a buddy. I fish daily almost but, I do so from a kayak at my little home lakes and stuff that are nothing like the TVA system- comparing the two is like night and day. That means every time I go to the TVA system I'm lost- no idea what or where they're biting- I try to cram too much into one day because I'm afraid to drive 2 hrs one way and invest all that money and time all to just fish one or two techniques. So I try to bring way too much stuff, rig up too many rods, and then get there and run around like a mad man trying to hurry up and get dialed in- which isn't easy to do when your senses are bombarded with input, which they always are on the TVA lakes- everything from beautiful women to huge barges, ppl partying, ppl fishing, ppl every where- it's nothing like my usual fishing holes. If I could go often though- get used to it, get dialed in- I know I could do light years better.
Floating on a floating chair I drug a 1/4 oz on the bottom letting the wind drag me and the swing head with a junebug craw and caught a nice 3.8 smalley off a point in 110 degree weather in Havasu Az. before this video came out. They work great.
Can you attach the wobble head to a worm hook and still get a good hookup ratio?
Yes, that can work as well. I just personally have a ton of confidence in wide gaps
@@tacticalbassin awesome thank you! Awesome videos!
Tossed this a bit last summer. Over the winter I got ahold of some with skirt collars, and tied up my own old school flat rubber jigs out of it. Haven't had a chance to try them yet, but it's on the list of things to toss. The smallies up here in Canada love anything with lots of action, grubs, or when I can't find the yamamoto double tail grub, I go with the strike king rage magnum rage bug. They'll destroy a big 4.5 inch rage bug.
Hey Matt. I was looking to purchase a Braillist, but I went with the Megabass Orochi Tour Versatile as my jig rod. I kayak fish so the more versatile my rod line up is,l better due to not being able to carry as many as a boater. I think it’s an amazing rod, but Just wanted to know if you’ve ever fished it and what your opinion of the model is if you have one.
i bout some of those and i am going to use them for this summer
Ever try it with a power worm?
Is that mud on your pants from pushing a stuck truck?
😂
The only thing that can stop the swing head is leaves on the bottom
I was throwing it then other day on the chick. Caught some big blue channel cats. No bass but I do love the bait!! Zoom z craw for me on 1/2 oz. Awesome video!!
Used this technique for the first time paired with a zoom lizard caught 43 post spawn females and 2 lb males secondary points with isolated rocks bounce off rocks get bit easy peasy
I started using the heads that come without a hook so that I can whatever hook I want. I really like the the Zappu Bellows Hook along with some of the ewg style hooks from Ichikawa, Hayabusa and Ryugi much better than the Gamakatsu ewg. On the Gammy ewg hooks, he hook point is inline with the line tie of the hook which results in less of a gap and fewer solid hookups. By using hooks that the point extends past the line tie, you don't have to bend it up and it solves the problem of lost fish and fewer hookups.
Hey Matt…do you still use the 9 wrap nail-knot for leader to braid? If so, can you do a 30 sec. short on how to tie the knot? Thanks.
Matt you are keeping Amazon busy. Every time I watch your videos, I send my money to Amazon. Thanks
