Jeff, I have enjoyed all of your covers but none more than Southern Pacific. This song was originally a rock song, then Neil did the banjo version... neither of which I cared for. Your acoustic guitar interpretation with the hammering-rolling-wheels of the train is truly brilliant, now one of my favorite songs. Thanks very much!
Cool. Very kind of you to say. I tried to imagine how Neil might do it on acoustic guitar. I'm glad so many people seem to enjoy it. It's all about the music ;o) Thanks!
I must be getting old, I thought I’d already left a comment. I know I like this, I keep coming back for a listen, so I must like it. It’s a great melancholy classic and you do it justice. Thanks
Shivers down my spine. I'm a guitarist and an engineman. I have this going through my head when I'm driving the long distance sleeper services. This has a resonance in more than one sense. One of my all time favourite covers.
This video was sent to me by a friend. It made me a little testy eyed. My Dad worked on the Railroad. Your rendition of this song is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for posting the video.
Thanks for the comments. I've never heard Neil do this on an acoustic guitar. I was listening to the gitjo version a lot and tried to imagine how he might play it. Glad you enjoyed it.
super reprise a sa sauce moi aussi je fais comme je le sens ;super feeling chapeau pour le chant et la gratte l émotion l ambiance tout y est bien vu l ami
A long time ago my dad got his “gold watch” from Greyhound then they derailed him and a lot of old timers with a permanent lay-off. I’m sure he still thinks about that day. Real glad I found your version of this tune.
You see, this is why I was feeling kinda bad as a leecher until now, Jeff. Another one of your videos I adore and have not commented on yet. I love the dynamics of the tempo and of the emotion in this one. Always carries me away like a slow, wide river getting narrower, flowing rapidly over rocks and then calming again -- tension building up and dissolving. Cathartic.
Thanks I'm glad you like the video. The knocking sound is the end of my fingers tapping on the pickguard area. It's something I started doing years ago. I've been trying to get control of it since I would tend to over-do it at times. Otherwise I just go "pickless" and try to get in the groove. Sometimes it happens sometimes not.
Hello, After having a 00015 and fell in love with the sound of this Martin, I discovered your interpretation on the version 000-15SM. After further research and listening I thought it had to be her. The seller of my city in france me the commended it to make a tests. I found it had more presence and I buy this 000-15SM. I had the surprise to discover that she had no adjustable truss rod and a slightly hollow handle. But after adjusting the action it is pure happiness. This is a Google translation. Sorry Thank you for your wonderful interpretation.
Thats good Patrick I'm sure you'll get many years of enjoyment out of that guitar. It does have an adjustable truss rod. No doubt about it. Martin changed the design a few years back so the adjustment is harder to reach. You need a long hex wrench to get to it but it is definitely there.
I stumbled upon this while searching for video samples of the guitar I hoped to purchase...the Martin 000-15sm. I did end up buying the guitar, largely because of this video. Just a marvelous interpretation of "Southern Pacific", with the percussive "thumping" on that sweet sounding (and sweet smelling) mahogany top of that Martin. Genuinely soulful. Very inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
Gheeze wayne..... Thought to have a go at this tune but wasnt getting anywhere.... Then I came across YOUR scintillating and awe inspiring version here.... I absolutely love everything about it... THANKS a million Jeff. Gives me shivvers...... Roll ON man.
I think it sounds great and the vid lets me see the size of the guitar better than the pics you sent,it'll need some breathin but should turn out to be a great instrument
Sweet version. I love the sound of that Martin. I only have a semi-acoustic Rickenbacker right now but I've lusted after a Martin 000 15 and a Santa Cruz 1929 000. After hearing you, I'm thinking the Martin and keep saving and dreaming about the Santa Cruz. Thank you for this video.
You are truly talented, this is one of my favorite songs, or renditions of one. Better then the original but I cannot say that because I have only heard this version. Thank you.
Damn it, son. I'm all the way down here in Mississippi. I heard this and I just have to say that I was floored. I love Neil, but I'd take your rendition over his any day. Maybe it's the railroad. Everybody's family has somebody that worked the rails. Maybe that's the genius of the song. In any case, I was there with you all the way. Beautiful. Love the guitar, too. Gorgeous sound. Gorgeous.
I keep coming back to this cover. I learned it myself, and even ended up with one of those martins. Not only because of this song, but because they are great guitars. Keep up the nice work man.
many thanks for your help Jeff I'm been recording the last days I used two micros a little rever and compresion the sound much better now thank you very much, I see you have a great guitars collection congratulations, I´ve been listening your covers in the last weeks in the library of my little town are great thanks
Hey bro, I got drunk tonight and found this track to play, I knew where to find you on South Pacific. Love your version mate. I'm a Gibson acoustic lover but I'm after a D15 slot head now, you are a cool player man. I'm Mark from the Uk. God Bless America. God bless England. Love to all. 😂😂😂
Great stuff, Jeff! What could be better, M15SM and Trains too! Thanks, really made my day-yeah, got to be better with a guitar! Great sound and mood-nicely done all around. Inspiring! Be well
I swore off the pick for a while but I'm starting to use it more often these days. I don't consider myself much of a singer but thanks for the compliments. I work at it. Thanks again
thanks for the compliments DJ. The first thing I would recommend would be using 2 mics to record in stereo. This adds a lot of depth to the recording. Other than that there's just a little compression and reverb added. Then get some good mastering software to finish it off. You can email me if you need more details. Jeff
Nicely done cover. I'm another bare-hander on guitar, even electric. I just enjoy the feel and sound of it better than a pick. Those little slot head mahogany Martins are pretty amazing for the price. Played one recently and I was impressed at the tonal balance and expressiveness.
yeah I do have an little bit of an addiction to these things. I did sell two to get this one so I can rationalize it pretty easily. Life's too short anyhow. On to the next one ;o)
Thanks I appreciate the kind words. I've been using DR Rare strings for about 5 years now. They sound great but they have a really nice feel to them that other strings don't have. Give them a try if you can get them in EU. .12-.54 gauge
Previously asked about the beat (finger taps) I really like that percussive touch and have since been trying to emulate that strumming feel ... have been totally soaking up your record by the way. Cheers.
HI Jeff, as you see you've got many listeners all around the world.... you deserve it . you made me focus on a martin 000-15s i just bought. I expect it quite soon here in France. I wonder which strings you're using as they really add resonance and clarity. Thanks for info and please keep on renewing Neil Young's songs, you're top notch on this.

Thanks!
Possibly my all time favourite performance on RUclips. I keep coming back to it.
Beautiful rendition of this song. My Dad worked for the Railroad. This song made me think of him ✌🏼
😎👍The Grim Reaper would wait for you to finish that song....Keep playing.
Really good cool, I love me a good mahogany guitar the Martin 000-15sm is just that
I must be getting old, I thought I’d already left a comment. I know I like this, I keep coming back for a listen, so I must like it. It’s a great melancholy classic and you do it justice. Thanks
An incredible performance accompanied by a wonderful sound. Thanks
Shivers down my spine. I'm a guitarist and an engineman. I have this going through my head when I'm driving the long distance sleeper services. This has a resonance in more than one sense. One of my all time favourite covers.
Donky Kong
Cool. Thanks for sharing
Still one my faves after all these years. I love this tune and this is my favorite version (:
Thanks. My voice was on edge today. I had one take in me and this is it. Glad you liked it.
This video was sent to me by a friend. It made me a little testy eyed. My Dad worked on the Railroad. Your rendition of this song is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for posting the video.
I very rarely consider a cover to be better than the original. Definitely is the best rendition of this song I’ve ever listened to.
Thanks for the comments. I've never heard Neil do this on an acoustic guitar. I was listening to the gitjo version a lot and tried to imagine how he might play it. Glad you enjoyed it.

Why don't you have more views ? This is really beautiful. Greetings from south of France, well done man
I love it. Great job. I especially love the sound of that Martin.
So dam good ! Arguably one of the best Neil covers ever
Joe Peinado That's very nice of you to say. I almost didn't upload it cuz it was so long. Glad I did
better than Neil on this by a long shot - with all due respect.
A long time ago my dad got his “gold watch” from Greyhound then they derailed him and a lot of old timers with a permanent lay-off. I’m sure he still thinks about that day. Real glad I found your version of this tune.
Glad you like it. Thanks for commenting

Jeff...you simply murdered it bro! Damn! I have been listened to this for a few years now. Perfect!
THIS IS AWESOME!!!
Thank you for watching. I don't own most of the guitars in my videos. They have long since moved on. I only keep a few at a time.

I really admire your talent...

Hello Jeff. Thanks for your reply, I found the trust road and settled the handle. Thanks again for the info. Your guitar creations are very beautiful.
The pleasure was all mine. Added this one to my "Guitar Acoustics" playlist ... :o).
I truly enjoyed this. Great stuff!
You are amazing.

As a songwriter and newly hatched fingerstyle guitarist, this song inspires me, over and over again. Thank you Jeff! Great song brilliantly done.

What an emotional moment you created here!!! Your voice is so sensitive, and that guitar flow is perfect. Neil should play this song like you :)

This is an awesome cover, just beautiful to listen to :)
You have great tastes in guitars
Oh so sweet. I love the rich sounding bass line. Thank you for sharing.
Very well done. Hats off to ya man.
Loved every second of it.

Fabulous. On of my all time favourite renditions.
Thank you
So lovely... Thanks.
by the way, I've been listening to this for two years, now. I never get tired of it.
Thanks a lot. It's down a half step, but it's standard tuning.
I saw your version before I saw any of Neil's versions. Yours is the best by far. Please do some more of these covers.
Thanks
The dynamic itself is dead on Jeff, great job in your covers. Sounds like you made it yourself. Hope O'l Neil ain't reading this post ahahah!
Thanks Rodi
This is so badass! I prefer this to Neil's versions and I listen to this all the time. Love your channel, Jeff!

downright brilliant! Love the ending.....ring it out!
thank you!
Great cover. It made me search out Neil Young's version. I was disappointed as your cover is far better and more soulful. Kudos.
Thanks J. much appreciated
