  • GUANGZHOU, First Impressions - A 19hr transit stay
    Guangzhou is the capital and largest city of Guangdong province in southern China.[8] Located on the Pearl River about 120 km north-northwest of Hong Kong and 145 km north of Macau, Guangzhou has a history of over 2,200 years and was a major terminus of the Silk Road. As one of China’s largest cities, we take this opportunity to experience a peek into this vibrant city. It is extremely colourful, explosive, and it’s culinary scene is almost second to none. It is after all home to all things Cantonese.
    And yet, this video will show you how organised the environment is and it almost feels like an utopian world illustrating a successful, wealthy, and highly educated society where everything runs like clockwork.
    My only regret is this stay was not a little longer. GUANGZHOU definitely warrants a return visit.

    I can see how a Durian pizza 'could' work given that some say it smells like rotten onions.. so durian and cheese could work. My wife loves durian but said 'no thanks'! Loving your journey Ryan... look forward to more of the journey.

      When in China, suppose we'd need to groove with their ways. So it's WeChat and AliPay we go. I'm going to Japan in a couple of months, it's the same issue there as well riding the trains. No debit credit cards allowed.

    • @ryansofly
      @ryansofly  Месяц назад

      The language barriers as a non Chinese speaker would be no different from being plonked in Japan or Korea. When I was in those countries, I relied on Google translate mostly. Otherwise, finger pointing normally works as well. 😏

    Hi Ryan, loving your informative videos. I have a couple of questions…I will also be flying China southern shortly (business class), I have a 15 hour layover too, & am hoping they will put me up in a hotel (hopefully for free🤞) but haven’t a CLUE how to go about it when we land in Guangzhou😅I’m also an Aussie citizen, so wondering about temporary visas too…Do you have any suggestions? Also, you mentioned Alipay app & Wechat…but surely they can only be used if you have access to internet? How did you guys access the internet?

    • @ryansofly
      @ryansofly  Месяц назад +1

      Howdy, here's my suggestion. Give CZ a call, they speak good English at the call center so enquiring about a free hotel during transit should not be a problem.
      If no hotel is eligible for your itinerary, the Novotel Baiyun Airport Hotel is VERY reasonably priced. We booked that on QANTAS Hotels and got bonus QF points too!
      If you are still unsure, after arrivals head upstairs to departures and there is a China Southern helpdesk located between check in rows N and P, they will be able to assist. Although their English can be hard to understand... I had to switch to Mandarin and take over from my husband who was trying to ask them where our hotel is located. Hahahahaha...
      China's visa rules are very fluid and even the immigration officers cannot keep up. Which explains why they were so unsure how to deal with us. So on arrival in CAN, head towards "INTERNATIONAL TRANSFERS" and the temporary permit section is located to the left of the transfer counters. Ask the person there and make him commit whether or not you'd need to apply for the entry permit.
      For foreigners, only AliPay applies because that is the only app which allows you to link a foreign issued credit / debit card. My husband used an eSIM during our stay in Guangzhou so we relied on his phone. After successful download and linking of card, your app generates a QR code and that's what you use to scan for payments of LITERALLY EVERYTHING.
      Hope this helps. And enjoy Guangzhou!

      @@ryansofly thank you so much for your helpful suggestions😊I only wish I had some knowledge of the local language…I speak fluent Italian as I now live in Italy, but…it’s obviously NOT going to help me much in Guangzhou, lol😅Not sure how I’ll go with the internet issue since I don’t have an eSIM & like you I have a VPN (Nord)🙄I’ve travelled the world for years (even before internet existed) & I always try to plan ahead but it looks like I’m probably gonna be flying blind this time round, so your suggestions will come in handy😉Thanks again! Ciao!😊

    • @Jovanmet
      @Jovanmet Месяц назад

      @@ryansofly sorry, just read your msg! Will depart from Rome, arriving at 5.55am. 15 hour layover, then on to Brisbane that same evening. Am actually looking into buying a new phone with eSIM. A bit too technological for me, but might make traveling easier in the future…one would hope! I always buy a sim upon landing in Oz, but again, if I upgrade my phone (which I’ve been meaning to anyway 😬) with an eSIM option & vocal language translation. A win win☺️Certainly not cheap, but neither is travelling, (especially business class😅). Will also be interesting to see how business class with CZ compares to others given that it costs almost half the price. The last business class I flew was with Singapore which was outstanding as is Cathay Pacific. I’m not expecting miracles anyway 😉I’m very curious to see a bit of guangzhou, tho haven’t the courage to stray too far😬

    • @Jovanmet
      @Jovanmet Месяц назад +1

      Ciao Ryan, It just occurred to me, I might sound a little precocious 😱I do not normally fly business, but I’ve just had major back surgery. Shouldn’t be flying at all but my sister’s getting married Down Under!🥳I flew business with Singapore airlines in ‘22 at the same price I’m paying for this flight. I normally fly premium economy, but was upgraded to business in ‘20 with Cathay Pacific…wow! That was an AMAZING experience! Anyway, thanks again for your helpful advice. If you guys ever come to Italy I can give you pointers on what (& what NOT) to do…including avoiding poor pizza choices😜😂
