  • If you're planning a trip or layover in China there is a lot to know before you go (hey, that rhymed 😅)! China is not the kind of easy-going travel destination where you can just wing it, especially because you will need to pre-download and setup apps that you will NEED to pay for things and basically do anything in China (hint: these apps cannot be set up after you arrive in China for various reasons). So to help our fellow travellers we documented our 19 hour layover in Guangzhou! If you have any other travel tips for China, please put them in the comments down below!
    Apps you will NEED:
    Get an Airalo e-sim: airalo.tp.st/j...
    WeChat: apps.apple.com...
    Alipay: apps.apple.com...
You can make payments using a foreign credit card with WeChat and Alipay, you can also use Didi (Uber) on Alipay as well as order food delivery, we stuck with Alipay because it worked for us but we downloaded and setup both apps before arriving to make sure we had a back up.

China economy is bleak now and companies in Shanghai, Beijing and other tier one cities are shutting down. China is currently in a major recession and falling into a depression. Everyone is taking pay cuts. Life is extremely hard in China now.Just like how Japan collpased back around 1985, China now is collapsing. In 2021, there was $344 BILLION in Foreign Direct Investment into China, but due to COVID lockdowns in China that damaged the entire manufacturing delivery food chain, foreign companies have been leaving China. In 2023, FDI into China was only $33 Billion; an astouding drop of over 90% when it was $344 BILLION in just 2021. This is why the CCP has contacted Westerners and given special deals so they create RUclips videos. This is why there is an explosion of YOTUBE videos in the last 6 months with so many with titles like 'Shocked about China" or "China is NOT What I Expected!" or "Honest Impression of Shanghi." Whoever gives a dishonest impression on Shanghai....except those who don't give you an honest impression.
People are suffering economically in China as if a depression has started. On top of this, foreign visitors to China has dropped about 65% compared to 2019. This is why China has open to free temporary VISAs to China for some 53 countries as they need hard dollar currency from other countries.
Foreign direct investment in China falls to 30-year low
Companies spooked by detentions for alleged spying and U.S. sanctions
BEIJING -- Investment in China by companies based abroad has sunk to the lowest level in 30 years, according to official data released on Sunday, in a sign that foreign corporations are leaving China due to tougher crackdowns on spying and U.S. sanctions.
China's foreign direct investment totaled $33 billion on a net basis in 2023, according to the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, down about 80% from 2022. The figure was positive as new investment surpassed outflows. But FDI declined for the second straight year and is less than 10% of the peak of $344 billion marked in 2021.

China is actually a good tourist destination, provided you are not Chinese. This is because Chinese people are always very friendly to white people but very harsh to their own kind.
If you are Chinese, there is a high chance that you will have to work overtime for very low wages for your entire life and be unemployed after the age of 35. The beautiful buildings at tourist attractions have nothing to do with most people's lives, as the average monthly income in China is $449, and the monthly income of 1 billion people is less than $274. These are figures released by the Chinese government.
You will be strictly prohibited from criticizing the government in public, and it is difficult to speak normally on social media. There are no clear standards for speech control, but the main focus is that you cannot criticize the government or the system itself.
The government has serious corruption problems. For example, this year, players on the Chinese national football team can obtain game qualifications by giving large sums of money to the head coach. This is roughly equivalent to Rooney being able to play in the European Cup starting lineup just by giving Southgate a sum of money. Such corruption is common in China, with most of it benefiting from the speech censorship system and not being exposed.
Wealthy Chinese people send their children abroad for education because the main function of Chinese education is to cultivate a group of highly obedient slaves. After obtaining huge amounts of money through corruption, Chinese officials also find ways to transfer their wealth abroad and move their families to the United States.
If you don’t want to get involved in politics, have no interest in justice, and just want to live a quiet life, you won’t encounter much trouble. However, you must pray that nothing bad happens to you, because if it does, no one will stand up for you. Your voice will be deliberately silenced, and no one will know about your plight.
If you care about justice, freedom, democracy, equality, and constitutionalism, you will feel despair, as China is moving madly in the opposite direction. The most popular buzzword in China in 2024 is "garbage time in history," meaning that most Chinese people generally believe that China is moving in the opposite direction of modernization, and the country is doomed to fail. Now, it is just a matter of waiting for this moment to happen.
You are not uncovering any truth; you are just visiting the best tourist attractions, eating some good food, and seeing some sights.
You cannot understand why regions closest to China, such as Taiwan and Hong Kong, would rather die than return to China. We understand the true nature of China, unlike you tourists who are easily deceived.
Please do not be deceived by these naive tourists, as they are helping the Chinese government with propaganda.

This is a large family ancestral hall, which was built by a wealthy family in ancient China. It is now open to tourists as a cultural heritage.
There are many family ancestral halls in China, where you can find family trees, some of which can even be traced back to two or three thousand years ago. In rural China, a village generally has only one ancestral hall, and the entire village is composed of the same family, which has been thriving for hundreds or thousands of years.
The family ancestral hall will record every member who has made significant contributions to the family. Ancestor worship is a belief of the Chinese, which is more devout than religious beliefs.

Lingnan, is an large area south of the Five Mountains. To the people in the north, that's an area of southern nomads. lack of culture and sophistication or fine taste in arts and life...... Guangzhou became popular after Economic Reform and Opening up in 1987. It got faster development (commerce and trade with the inland) by being next to Hong Kong.

Brother! The city of Guangzhou has been built for more than two thousand years! You say this has no history? Guangdong Province is a big immigrant province. For thousands of years, people from the Central Plains of China have immigrated in succession, so Guangdong's culture has also retained the traditional Chinese native culture!

haha, that first "fancy" restaurant is not really expensive, they did not show price because their price for most of the dishes are the same into 3 or 4 categories, and they are listed somewhere behind the menu, and it is one of the most popular and classic restaurant in the city!!! it is like 15-20 USD per person and you will be full. Try next time pls!!! haha

😊Dim sum restaurants usually don't list the price for each single dim sum. They have like five categories or price levels 小點中點大點頂點精點. Each dim sum falls into one category. They count how many of each you eat. For us, usually we have 3 dim sums per person each meal.

Chen's academy was really an ancestral hall of the Chen Clan of the entire Guangdong province. It was illegal to build joint ancestral hall/shrine united multiple clans because the Emperor did not want a large gathering of people that could be a guise for rebellion. The Chen clan named it an academy to work around the system.
It served multiple purposes in addition to ancestral worship. It was a guild that provided many services to clan members including room and board plus education for Chen's descendants who studied for the imperial examination to become a court official, the mandarin bureaucrats.
