It's like they took a Mitsubishi, and got rid of the aggressive character lines that make it look sort-of okay. The only uglier EV SUV is the Tesla Model X, and it's close. I'd sooner show up to a fancy party in a Nissan Leaf than one of these, unless they do an emergency facelift (like Toyota did after the first year of the latest gen RAV4, which looked downright scary at first). The front reminds me of a cross between a Dodge Nitro and a jellybean, and you're right that the rest looks like an Outlander. Given the luxury options though, I think the Jaguar is by far the best-looking, and long-term reliability is simply not a concern since 80%+ of all of these (except maybe the Tesla) will be leased. The Audi would look the best, but I think it doesn't do a good enough job of disguising its hatchback roots. All crossovers are lifted hatchbacks or wagons with higher roofs and restyled beltlines, but they usually either try to look like an actual SUV, or are unashamedly lifted wagons with cladding (Audi Allroad, Subaru Outback). The Audi straddles an awkward line between those two strategies: it's too high to be a good-looking hatchback, but still not big and aggressive enough to give crossover buyers what they want.
Tesla's has already beaten ferraris and stuff in a straight line with their normal everyday cars. An electric car actually designed to be fast and agile would crush an ICE. But I will miss the sound of the big V8's. Maybe they will figure out how to make a sound like that without having to fake one with speakers.
The front looks very un-mercedes like. The rear looks dynamic and interesting, the front disappoints in comparison. The interior looks classy. So, it will probably sell really well as it's a Mercedes, and will probably be great to drive, just odd to look at from the front...
Love the show! Just wanted to point out that saying the 3-pin takes forever and the fast charging is mush better might sound to some like those are the only alternatives. When in fact installing a washer/dryer socket in your garage for as little as $80 makes it viable to charge overnight in ~6 hours. And of course a fast charging network is useful for road trips :)
Puneet Dass Aerodynamic features for improved range (why not get rid of oldschool door handles and grille?), better battery pack (energy density and overall capacity), front trunk (and a larger rear trunk, too), much faster charging, more power, hardware ready for full autonomy, etc. And really any kind of feature that would make me want wait 2 years for this car and not buy a Jaguar right now. While this might seem about competitive today, they plan to release it 2 years from now and by that time it might look seriously outdated next to Tesla Model Y.

More than 300,000? I highly doubt it. I will agree with you that Mercedes will probably sell this thing well, if only because people care about a badge. :-)
And the issue with a transmission tunnel is? Alot of manufacturers will use it for bigger battery versions. That space is usable and not needed inside the vehicle.
I would have hoped for a little more forward inspired design due to several rather extreme concepts from MB, but they most likely test some potential MB buyers for feedback. So it is a rather conservative profile and as pointed out the rear exhaust decorations are not really fitting an all-electric car - Stuff like that needs a bit different thinking but will come later I am sure. Interior looks good and in tune with the latest MB - it seems like the Screens got a little bit smaller and sitting lower, which I find pretty nice.
And here is what people were saying was eventually going to happen. The car has a slightly lower range than the Tesla Model X, yet is over $50k cheaper (initially) much better equipped and much more practical. It also can charge faster that an X using DC ironically (that was Edison's current of choice and its actually more efficiently store and transmitted over short distances than AC). So far it looks the best of the four presented, but the Audi you pictured is in too much camouflage paint, so its hard to really compare it.
@@cretumarius9616 A long bonnet does not determine the production line it's built on. Why must it have a snub nosed bonnet? Or none at all? It'd look wierd. Like the model x look wierd and egg like. Plus this provides better safety as it has a bigger crumple zone. And the space is more than sufficient for this class of SUV.
@carwow can you confirm it's built on a dedicated platform? I keep reading it shares the GLC underpinnings which is why there's no frunk and a large transmission tunnel. That, combined with the mediocre EV range makes for an underwhelming package.
cmonn makeittwerk no, it’s not. It will be launched next week in S.F. What you might have seen are mule cars and preproduction cars in disguise with design elements subject to change.
If other manufacturers comes up with an EV, people immediately trolls Tesla without realising that those manufacturers doesn't have four key ingredients to have a bite into Tesla's market share. 1)Tens of thousands of worldwide superchargers 2) over the air updates to improve or add functionality/features 3) Where all Model 3s are already sold even before it's made, the other EVs just lie inside the dealerships waiting to be sold 4) Gigafactory:- will be producing more Li-ion batteries than the entire world combined. Tesla is atleast a decade ahead of anyone. No surprise that only one model, i.e. Model 3 outsold all BMW models (gas+hybrid+ev) combined on August in the US.
Styling is completely subjective, there is no point debating about it. Having said that, I find Model X lot better looking from the outside compared to Mercedes. Audi is better though. I hate that Mercedes relied on fake grills and fake exhausts and a fake engine shape under the hood, it doesn't make any sense.
For those of us who cant afford more than 20k for an electric, PLEASE check Sono Motors - Sion from Germany, you wont fall in love with the car, interior basic but 16000 euro and 20000 with the battery included, and you have a winner. Hope Matt will test it soon. Spoke to the guys and they plan having testing days in the UK as well.
Avoiding the elephant in the room I see? Where do I charge the bloody thing? It’s a family SUV for family road trip, if it can’t do that then it just a overpriced Nissan Leaf
i like this. maybe a little Ford Edge in the front but looks good. but what is the range? The press release says 'up to 200 miles', and some places are saying 280 miles?
Shut up moron. The Mercedes is much more expensive and at that price point it should have larger batteries and range. Other models with similar size and weight have longer range too.
I do like the design, but taking a closer look carefully, it doesn't seem to have much of a "Mercedes-Benz" personality. The front -grille excluded - with those headlights resembles the Ford Edge and some other SUV from that brand I cannot remember, while the rear taillight appears to be taken from the Kia Sportage or the 2018 Porsche Cayenne, with light modifications.
Ludicrous www.google.co.uk/amp/s/business.financialpost.com/transportation/daimler-ag-sells-its-tesla-motors-inc-stake-for-us780m-as-model-s-rises-as-luxury-car-rival/amp Now after getting $780M back from an initial $50M they’re going crush them at their own game lol
13thmistral they might as well become a niche car maker like Pagaani or get bought out by Mercedes and become like Smart car . They should forget mass production
The taste and colors are not discussed, so it is normal to have differences of opinion, the most important for us is to be sure that Tesla, Mercedes, Audi and all electric SUVs will keep their promise in matters reliability, performance, durability and not paying a fortune for the acquisition and recharge of these.
Tesla model s with 643,737 km, real world driving - www.tesloop.com/blog/2018/7/16/tesloops-tesla-model-s-surpasses-400000-miles-643737-kilometers The detailed costs and maintenance seem reasonable. Can this Mercedes surpass those numbers? Also, can the Mercedes surpass the tech, the speed, the power, the auto pilot of a Tesla?
Shifter and Wiper Stalks, Steering Column, Front Seat Controls, Window Switches... not exactly things that go a long way to prove that the model s's reliability (or not) is down to it using Mercedes parts.
A bit disappointed that you did not mention the towing capacity, which is what will make this car a more realistic alternative to the Model X than the other EVs mentioned in the review.
Not hard to beat Tesla considering how crappy they are in every way other than how quick they are in a straight line. Poorly built, poorly designed and engineered, which reflects in the fact that it's the most unreliable car brand in the world with the most break downs (despite not using ICE drive trains which include a ton of mechanical parts and being very simple in comparison to classic cars), and some of the lowest perceived quality on the brand new cars. Their interiors feel (and squeak/rattle) worse than almost any car on the market, regardless of price, let alone cars that costs 100k pounds of more. Materials used by them are cheap and show wear and tear extremely quickly. Fit and finish and attention to detail is poor on them and I know people who took them apart while repairing something and found HORRIBLE price cutting solutions under the skin that wouldn't be found on any other brand, let alone premium cars. Talking stuff like window winding mechanisms, seat adjustment mechanisms, headlights, windscreen wiper motors, etc. are all literally as cheap as you can get on the market, but that's the stuff most people don't even think about. Point being, they're not GOOD CARS. Tesla had a monopoly so far by being the only car brand that mass produced electric cars, but the fact is, other than being electric and looking nice on the outside, their cars are poor to mediocre at best in most aspects compared to the competitor brands who aren't electric. In which way is a Tesla Model S as good as an S class or an A8? It costs more than either, so where does that money go? It certainly doesn't go into complex mechanical components, because just a dual clutch automatic gearbox in one of those cars is far more complex than electric motors Tesla uses, which are actually extremely simple from an engineering perspective. They don't have differentials, gearboxes, engines, etc. Is it as luxurious? Nowhere near. As well built? Nowhere near. Drives as well? Nowhere near. As comfortable, refined, polished up in every detail, as well equipped? Nowhere near. As safe? Nowhere near. As reliable? Nowhere near. Does it feel like a 100k+ car when you sit in it? Nope, more like 40k, and that's pushing it already and it drops once you start touching things in them instead of just looking at them. So I'm glad that big manufacturers are starting to make GOOD electric cars, not just mediocre cars that happen to be electric and then receive all the praise and glory for being unique. Also, finally those annoying Tesla fanboys who know nothing about cars but became car experts overnight and now spit on all cars that aren't Tesla's like they're pieces of "prehistoric" garbage will shut the hell up about their god and savior Musk.
Mercedes' answer to the question: What would a cross among Honda, Ford's Edge and a Porsche Cayenne look like? This was not a serious question Mercedes. Having said that, the I-Pace and the E-Tron both look amazing and represents their brands' styling ethos perfectly.
I am a huge fan of electric cars and like seeing the industry move forward, but am slightly skeptical, that by the time the production starts, this will be to little too late...

totoIV yes but all this translates in les interior and cargo space plus a long bonnet
Finally, True car producer shows the world that all electric car (suv) doesnt need to look like crap.
The rear of the EQC reminds me of the Kia Sportage
Then there is Audi Q8 which blows both away :P
cmonn makeittwerk q8 isn't electric so it doesn't blow anything. Let's wait for etron to come out then talk.
@@eventusvantos2770 prototipe of e tron is already out and its so much better then this...
Q8 is not electric ⚡️
Eventus Vantos Either way the eqc is ugly
cmonn makeittwerk no, it’s not. It will be launched next week in S.F. What you might have seen are mule cars and preproduction cars in disguise with design elements subject to change.
4:20 Still has the hump in the rear floor, not completely flat
I will buy an electric car when prices are same as current petrol or diesel equivalent, range is 500+ miles and charge time is under 5 min.
Charge time doesn't matter since you charge overnight you only need enough range for road trips enough that one lunch break is enough for charging
Why can only Tesla make good looking electric cars smh
Smurkitz because they don’t rely on the past.
Haha. What tesla is good looking? Not the model x. That's basically an egg with a face. The model s and 3? Both generic. No style whatsoever.
@@SDav21 If the Model X looks like an egg then this mercedes is a crusched egg.
@@Smurkitz No. You see. Because the model x actually looks like an egg. At least the EQC looks like an SUV. Not an egg shaped minivan ala model x.
Short range will be the main showstopper for all e-cars for years to come. But good to see they are on the road to something good.
The Jag looks amazing, i dont like the Merc
right, because Jag is owned by Tata
@@therambler3713 does it matter who owns jaguar?
R W Yip. Imagine the Germans bragging about how VW is the pride of der Deutschland when we both know some Mexican company owns it.
wait till you see the jag in person. I can guarantee you that you will puke.
The Rambler what do you mean by "some Mexican company owns it" ?
For those of us who cant afford more than 20k for an electric, PLEASE check Sono Motors - Sion from Germany, you wont fall in love with the car, interior basic but 16000 euro and 20000 with the battery included, and you have a winner. Hope Matt will test it soon. Spoke to the guys and they plan having testing days in the UK as well.
Mercedes, is the best.
Benz EQC looks beautiful. ♡♡
Thanks ^^
Looks like the future of SUV’s
So, when is the EQC63 AMG coming out?
would be awesome, maybe in the future ?
Can't have a 63 AMG without a V8.
Avoiding the elephant in the room I see? Where do I charge the bloody thing? It’s a family SUV for family road trip, if it can’t do that then it just a overpriced Nissan Leaf
they're building dozens of charging stations every year as we speak
You know how many people use SUV's as around town vehicles? lol
Rennie Ash 90% of the time I drive suvs in town, but I wouldn’t buy one if it can’t handle the 10% when I want to do a weekend getaway.
The Rambler car=freedom, how free do you feel if the only place you can go are places that Mercedes allows you to go?
@YX Yang; In Europe there are more than 5100 CCS chargers to charge the car.
i like this. maybe a little Ford Edge in the front but looks good. but what is the range? The press release says 'up to 200 miles', and some places are saying 280 miles?
Lower range than a Hyundai Kona...
You forgot that the Kona is a much smaller and lighter car. You're comparing cars that don't compete with each other, stupid.
Looks: 1)audi
2)tesla
3)i pace
4)merc
Tesla 2nd! are you nuts?
Audi
I pace
Tesla
Merc
Finally really beautiful Mercedes. Love the how this car looks.
Haven’t seen an uglier Mercedes. The 1999 ML looks better than this.
Wow another one of your best reviews, seeing the car for the first time,it looks really good, thanks Mat.
mercedes invested billions of dollars in tesla, they aren't trying to beat them
GS 15 Mercedes sold their shares years ago and they only invested $50 M
GS 15 Lol you are SO wrong and you get likes for it. Face palm
Ludicrous www.google.co.uk/amp/s/business.financialpost.com/transportation/daimler-ag-sells-its-tesla-motors-inc-stake-for-us780m-as-model-s-rises-as-luxury-car-rival/amp
Now after getting $780M back from an initial $50M they’re going crush them at their own game lol
tesla is going down unless they sell out fast. they failed for the last time by now.
Jaguar looks best any day of the week.
I agree !
Looking forward to the EQE (hopefully there will be one)
Looks inferior to a Tesla in all regards except interior luxury.
You must be deluded if you think tesla's build quality and reliability is better than mercedes'
Tesla model s with 643,737 km, real world driving - www.tesloop.com/blog/2018/7/16/tesloops-tesla-model-s-surpasses-400000-miles-643737-kilometers
The detailed costs and maintenance seem reasonable. Can this Mercedes surpass those numbers? Also, can the Mercedes surpass the tech, the speed, the power, the auto pilot of a Tesla?
Tesla is made with parts from Mercedes
Shifter and Wiper Stalks, Steering Column, Front Seat Controls, Window Switches... not exactly things that go a long way to prove that the model s's reliability (or not) is down to it using Mercedes parts.
JP that example is an outlier. Look at the average and cost of maintance to get there then you will see how bad Tesla is!
@Carwow; 0:54 please include metric measurements in your video.
In the next 50 years the petrol(diesel) engines will be replaced by these Electric cars ... BTW im for Petrol :D :D
Next 10-15 years maximum
1944 /// there will always be hybrids. Electric ain’t just the future
Nahh it'll be hydrogen cars.
1944 /// The EU has already declared a ban on petrol cars by 2028
BramMW you dream to much kiddo. Petrol cars will always be there
That EQC on comparsion moment with other cars looks way better then this one on whole video, is this other version, amg for example ?
Not good looking
I completely agree
Agree 100%!
As an old driver I totally agree with you here in france tesla coste way to much for what you get
Are you done with your hate comment? I bet you never rode tesla
Seen a few now where simple things like panel alignment is so far out it’s laughable. Why would you not get something as key as that right?
10%-80% in 40 Minutes? 280 mi.? Amazing!
My ‘83 240D gets 0-100% in 25 seconds and gets me 800 miles, but thanks again
well many cities in several countrys wont allow you to drive that old polluter car through anymore!....
That has got to be one the ugliest cars I've ever seen.
Mercedes' answer to the question: What would a cross among Honda, Ford's Edge and a Porsche Cayenne look like? This was not a serious question Mercedes. Having said that, the I-Pace and the E-Tron both look amazing and represents their brands' styling ethos perfectly.
Hideous. Yikes
I am a huge fan of electric cars and like seeing the industry move forward, but am slightly skeptical, that by the time the production starts, this will be to little too late...
