Anyone who has stood at a Rapid charger for several minutes in the Winter, with the wind howling and rain/sleet hitting them almost horizontally, whilst trying to connect with an app, or contact the company responsible, will be wishing for something like this or the Tesla supercharging system to be universal. That time cannot arrive quickly enough.

Too true! I am in Canada and can relate. As soon as I got my Chevy Bolt I loved the car and driving electric, but charging payment is a true pain in the Butt. I said then and Robert says he has too, we are driving computers with wheels, the car already talks to the charger about power and capacity and stuff, "Why can't the car settle up with the charging company!" Apparently "M" word was listening, won't be long before the whole industry goes this way, its too simple and probably another source of revenue for the manufacturer

In Norway the electric car club has an RFID chip that unifies all the charging stations, so you can just plug the thing into your car and scan the RFID chip at the charger (which I have on my keyring).

By the end of the year, "plug and charge ISOxxxxxx" standard will be implemented on Electrify America and Ionity, afaik. Fastned already has something like that. You subscribe once and then it remembers your car everytime you plug it in.

I have a better solution: free charging stations (paid by the governments)
In the US they are paying ~4000USD/year subsidy for every gas car (it's similar in Europe), that would cover installation, maintenance and use of charging stations.

I have been watching your show for a few months now and because of you we had the courage to rent a Tesla Model X to tour the British countryside and Wales. It was the most amazing vacation/road trip of our life. The charging was no problem at all and actually kind of fun because it forced us to get out of the car. We didn't drive a small amount either, we drove from Chipping Norton, through Snowdonia to Caernarfon and back, that was 400 miles in one day. Cuz I had watched your show and done further research we knew exactly how and when to charge and what maps we needed to find our way easily. It was a long day yes, but totally amazing. Also, I just love that I'm getting this news from the gent who plays Kryton. It adds to the whole futuristic feel of the electric car lol.

I am pleasantly surprised at how competitively priced and specced this car is in Norway. And from the video - M-word company knows how to soundproof a car. The range seems to be realistically around 330 km in summer - so JUST nudging across the 200-mile range (in summer...making me worry a little bit about the Norwegian winter). One has to squeeze 1 km out at less than 200 watts to get the 400+ range out of this car. That will require a very light right leg.
Apart from this - M-word company has done a good job here with a car that will sell whatever they can deliver here in Norway. With hopes that they will unclock 150 kW charging.

To be fair it is not a Mercedes development, it is just that they fully upgraded to CCS 2.0 standards. In other words it will be a feature that will be included on most of the EVs of the future, however as it costs a bit more to implement than CCS 1.0 there will be some manufactureres who will wait implementing the system till they are forced to upgrade, which will happen with EVs developed after 2020.

I was lucky to get a test drive in the EQC and I can fully confirm what FC have said in this Video. It is a GLC Q5 sitze car. Extremely well built and dead silent. And priced in Germany to get the federal tax reduction and with that approx 10k€ cheaper than the Audi E Tron. Still too expensive for me though. But you can order a tow bar. And the navigation also works like the one in Tesla as it can include chargers with its speed within the journey. Sit in one and drive one - most of you will love it. Nice review, Robert. The charging solution sounds very clever. It would be great if all EVs could do something similar. I happen to be on a driving holiday in Norway. The roads are amazing (although almost all one lane each way with a max of 80 km/h): huge suspension bridges over fiords, long tunnels through mountains, including corkscrew tunnels to change altitude in a short distance, roundabouts inside tunnels.

Daimler philosophy - exceptional build quality and soft luxury. The performance specification, by EV standards, is ok/fine, with an excellent driving experience, from a luxurious perspective. For £64K. You have to give a great deal of credit to Daimler for that. The in-car software is what potentially lets down the vehicle. Not in terms of its sophistication, but in terms of accessibility. I did notice that Robert got away with saying Mercedes once and the 'Interface Assistant' [for want of a better phrase] didn't spring into life. Elon Musk has said that software is what is going to hold back the trad' manufacturers, and that video illustrated a typical case in point. But it's far wider than that too.
It's not the car I would want to own, day in, day out, but I'd love to hire one for a week. And I'd spend the first couple of hours wading through the software to make sure I found the antidote to the 'M Word' issue. Nice car. Largely inoffensive appearance too.

I"m excited about the Mercedes EQC. I've driven a Tesla Model X for about 15 months. I'm sure hands down the Mercedes EQC will have a better fit and finish and feel more high end than the Model X. However, there are several "tech" areas where I think Mercedes EQC is way behind. The two big areas. 1. Autonomous driving: Now I don't use "navigate on autopilot" in my Tesla (I don't trust it enough yet) but I use regular "autopilot" every day on the interstate as I drive in stop and go traffic for about an hour to work. Other than resting your hand on the steering wheel, it does everything and has not made any mistakes. It's a true joy to drive like this and reduces the stress on me a good deal. From your review, I'm not sure Mercedes EQC is exactly at this point yet? Secondly, and this is a big one, over-the-air software updates. This is huge as the tesla is always improving. About a year ago, they updated so that the battery would pre-warm prior to getting to a supercharger. More recently they updated the "summon feature" which is quite useful and an update on the automatic windshield washers. Tesla feels like a computer because of this and I don't get the sense that the Mercedes or Porche EVs will have this. Regardless, my next car will again for sure be an EV but I would only buy something other than Tesla if they had these features.

The claim of charging at any charge point sounds optimistic, considering the fragmented state of things in the UK. I'm sure I've seen AC CPs that are RFID only - they're not going to work. And the chances of EcoAtrocity's old DBT's working reliably with a car that can ask for >100kW - ISTR this is why they are flaky with Konas.
I also got the impression you had to use the App to say which charger you wanted to use beforehand - if so this is still a step away from true plug & charge, but that's probably out of their hands.

  • @unreliablenarrator6649
    @unreliablenarrator6649 5 лет назад +3

Why do you need to remake all the parts for an EV? A great deal of parts are power plant agnostic and it increases cost and risk to make new parts where existing ones are already suitable and proven. For a new company like Tesla, or a new platform of radically different form (e.g., BMW i3) there is a higher engineering content needed but for a SUV, are we saying a electric drivetrain needs new seats, heaters, screws or door handles? That is nonsense. And in the case of Tesla, the Model S was a nightmare design that showed their immaturity and lack of standardization, and was a nightmare to build because of it. Tesla teardown my Munro found the greatest number of fastener types and weld types of any car they ever analyzed and this is a negative. I would full expect Benz to be the opposite; the product of a disciplined, mature design process with standardization to maximize quality and reduce cost. Robert, I love your reviews, but you are not an engineer.

There's a surprising amount of ICE-centric engineering in ICE car parts.
Oh, you say, but the wheels are the same! There must be a lot of similar parts in the suspension! Uh, no: different suspension components, due to different weight and weight distribution, and a different type of axle; different brakes, due to different ways to slow down and different types of power for the braking system; etc. Tell me one part you expect to be the same on an ICE car and an EV and I'll point out a guess of why the engineering will be different.

The statement around 8:40 is just wrong. Otherwise there would be no awkward transmission tunnel reducing legroom on the center back seat. Second clue is the mounting of the electric motor in a frame construct to match the mounting points of the ICE on the GLC (which the EQC is a conversion of). That's why there is no "frunk" on the EQC.
This car could have been a lot better it they had developed it from scratch instead of making compromises by just putting an electric drive train in the GLC.
They could have given it a better drag coefficient too this way instead of the abysmal 0.29

Exactly my point. If they build it from 0, they didn't do it properly. It weights as much as small house, it has huge bonnet, where is no frunk. It looks to me like conversion of GLC.

Of course it is only 15% of components from the old car, because 85% of the components made up the internal combustion engine.
