The Mercedes EQC launches the 'EQ' badge, one which will soon be found on every new Mercedes electric car and hybrid, along with a striking new design language. The EQC might not be quite as striking as the Jaguar I-Pace or as radical as the Tesla Model X, but its futuristic design, including full-width LED light strips between the front and rear lights, help set it apart from the conventional Mercedes range. How does it compare to its electric and conventional rivals? Batch delivers the Carbuyer verdict.

I got one of the first few EQC that have dribbled into New Zealand. Having driven a Hyundai Kona EV for a year, I am not exactly new to the EV scene. Unfortunately, the Kona gave us so many quibbles and niggles that we were not prepared to keep it. The EQC does not have the same mileage, as pointed out in this review - but: here's a little surprise. We set out on a 160km drive from Auckland to Whangarei. As we left, the EQC said we had a range of 250km in the battery. When we arrived, we still had 120 km's worth of charge remaining. Do the math. And, don't think we were in eco mode - in fact we drove it in sport mode much of the way and with 'regain' turned down as far as it went. What a nice surprise indeed.
Yes the rose gold air vents that every reviewer seems to get hung up on. Tell the truth - you hardly notice them. I was expecting gauche-ness extraordinaire from the reviews, but it just blends in.
Hardly see it. The cream coloured leather seats we ordered certainly do not generate any claustrophobia, but we haven't put my 6'2 brother in law into the back seat yet.
Conclusion: you get into this car, and you drive it. No fuss, no muss. Road holding is excellent, if, where and when we need performance it is/was staggering. (The Kona displayed horrid under-steering at times, by the bye.) I fondly remember my Volvo 850 where, when you started overtaking at 80km/h you passed the bonnet of the overtakee at 120 km/h -- well this car has more get up and go than that, even if it may not feel as racy as an ipace (which I never got to lay eyes on, unfortunately). It certainly drives harder, has a more immediate feel to it than the Audi e-tron we took for a spin that had more of a 'swaying barge' kind of feel to it. (don't get me wrong, it's a wonderfully well equipped car, too). I actually like that the Merc is a bit more subdued inside. The bells and whistles are not in-your-face. And I won't hesitate to mention that I saved easily 10 grand plus compared to a similarly accessoried Audi or Jag, here in NZ. That was a pleasant surprise as well. May not apply in Britain or North America ....
“You drive electric?” “No I drive a Mercedes”
"A" Chinese "Merchedes"
This is all good but I think the EV market is crying out for more affordable cars.
Totally agree, we need 300/400 mile range ev which seats 4/5 and is 16k.
Yes, but first they need to produce and sell the more expensive models with higher profit margin. They also need to learn about EV first (which they can do while producing lower volumes).
Andrew Allan that just isn’t a feasible price unless just want a battery, wheels, and the cheapest weak body you could ever imagine
Andrew Allan cobalt mined up from the DRC comes at a cost when separatists sabotaging the mines. Don’t expect cheap batteries any time soon
Andrew Allan yeah, and I want to be a millionaire
Now I cannot unsee that mustache!!!
Its a fact
Jenny Penny driving under the influence of a moustache
We have one of these from new in 2023. Let me start by saying you don’t now get the augment satnav or the Burminster sound system. Unfortunately no one tells you this while we waited 3 months for the car. But and this is a big one after driving so many new cars over all my years this EQC drives fantastic. It is so quiet and so smooth, yes there are things I would change but over all a brilliant car. I charge it over night at home and it costs around 3.60 for half a charge if you dead flat. The wheels are a nightmare to clean, go ahead a try it lol. Range is terrible in the winter as we all know, summer get back to near 240m. I love driving this car.
I've been a mercedes customer for 18 years, currently in an E Class, however, after test driving the EQC recently, I've opted and placed an order for the Jaguar I-Pace. Just a more refreshing car.
Do you have a brain damage?
No comparison you went downmarket to an unreliable jag
James you liar, Mercedes have had an extremely under advertised all electric B class for a couple of years now that you almost have to fight them to buy!
Not really
@@paguliukas not really what?
We need EVs for the everyday man. Ford and Vauxhall step up guys! There are many of us who would love to drive an EV, but do not have the funds for vehicles like this.
Well Vauxhall _is_ coming out with the electric Corsa, so
ShroomWalrus - Good news - it's a start anyway, though a Corsawould not be very high on my shopping list. A used i3 is more tempting; for me anyway.
Vote with your pocket, delay your next purchase till they give what we are demanding
1:25 If Hercule Poirot failed as a detective and became a car journalist...
the transmission tunnel is mostly a structural reinforcement component nowadays
A Mercedes that relies solely on electrical components to run? No, this isn't a total disaster waiting to happen.
Imagine a FIAT 😂🤣
Interesting how it has a huge grille when it doesn’t need any cooking
"You may not have the looks, you may not have the dash, but you'll win yourself a girl if you only have a mustache..." 🎶🎶
That car in black must look amazing.
how do these car makers get away with lying about the range
Same way they get away with lying about mpg - its massively influenced by external factors so I would always think of range as a "best case scenario"
Same on petrol.
Actually Mercedes doesn't lie. Look at the new range test from Bjorn. This car has 400km range as Mercedes said.
I dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know a method to log back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot my password. I would love any tips you can offer me!
@Everett Cody instablaster :)
Is it me, but head room in the back seats looked like it was over 8cm easily.
The first electric Mercedes is the Mercedes B class Electric Drive.
The most beautiful EV for sure.
To me when they show a rear and side profile it looks like a Vauxhall Grandland X
am i the only one who thinks that carbuyer is more like carwow
Are you ?
What is wrong with car companys and this touch screen love. We had a great intuitive wheel schrol moving trough menus and it worked. Getting eyes of the road and streching hand to make screen dirty is just a no go for me. Iam glad that my 2018 Audi A4 with MMI plus isnt using touch sreens and I love it.
EQC 400 AMG best buy.
I think it looks awesome!

Slats trim will be a real dust and grunge trap.
Feet for measuring size. In EU.... wait...
Also, like why are you being so condescending to mercedes? Its like every other feature you have a lowkey diss. wtf
He says "which we are very familiar with again" like everyone here like me can buy or owns an MB just like that. Sheesh!
A Chinese "Merchedes" for $83,000USD registered and insured in Australia, I'd rather wait for the Porsche thanks but no thank$!
I cannot unsee that mustache now 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Regardless nice video!
I imagine shaping the car like a brick and giving it a huge frontal area isn't exactly going to make it efficient. The other problem with low efficiency is that each hour charging adds fewer miles.
EXACT SAME SCRIPTING AS DRIVINGELECTRIC. Mentioning how the ‘rose gold’ air vents give a ‘victoria beckham feeling’ and much more points!!!
Great review as always. How long does it take to charge on a 3 pin plug ? Not sure why most of these manufacturers are going for the upper end of the market with their first ev offerings, perhaps because they cannot supply enough cars (batteries) if there was serious demand at the lower price ranges?
If it is 80 kwh battery then 80/2.4= 33 hours 20 minutes on a 3 pin plug. Not that you ever plug in empty and fill up at home. I have a Zoe and top it up for a couple of hours a few times a week from a 7.2 kw wall box (not inconvenient because it would be sitting there anyway). I do use the three pin plug if I am staying the night somewhere with a socket though. There is more demand than cars at the lower price ranges but hard to tell how much extra demand because so few cars are made.
Looks like a big Mercedes x Hen egg homunculus
9:50 to 10:12 cracks me up. Almost thought he was passing a compliment. :)
Any car under 500km "real" range shouldn't even be considered. Definitely not for these price range. This is a SNUV - Sport NO Utility Vehicle :-)
Very annoying and misleading to always mention that for an EV it takes 8 to 11 hours to charge at home from 0 to full battery. Do you arrive at home with a petrol or diesel car always with an empty tank? Or do you have a full tank when you leave in the morning? NO you do not, so why would it be any different with an EV?!
Nice review
That looks like the Lincoln navigator
What colour is this car?
Always look forward to your excellent informative reviews. Thanks..
Have they borrowed the back from Porsche?
People in the back seat are gonna be okay, trust me
He looks like murr from impractical jokers
We are in 2019 and still car companys dont tell the truth with range and the reality is 20 % lower then it should be. Until we come to 500 real life kilometrel I wont buy one. I did try Nissan Leaf last week and I like how electric cars drive but losing 40 % on of battery in 70 kilometres makes me say we are 3 years away from mainstreem.
the weeknd brought me here
So basically an electric GLC that costs £20k more....
You can buy a lot of diesel with £20k 🤔
The centre console doesn`t blend in very well with the vents, (the bit you could wobble),it looks very untidy. Plus NO wireless charging, what a let down for the price. You might expect that on something like a Dacia, but you could probably buy 10 of them for the price.
Thumbs up for the NRA license plate.
It’s finally here! 😊😊
Everything is nice but the bareria is too small.
Design is very blobby and conservative
This is a fake carwow
Looks like crv to me
Don’t have to wait 5 years to say it looks horrendous
Car buyer has literally copied carwow and then just got a not as good presenter.
REALLY!!!! Floor tunnel in the back!!! They have taken the floor from a GLC! that's so cheep!!!!!!!! I absolutely love my merc and will be buying electric next time but will I be buying this..no, bad range and not new looking enough just looks like any other suv,
When MG electrified the ZS EV they re-engineered the rear floor to remove the transmission tunnel. You'd have thought - since Mercedes are charging 3x as much - they'd have done the same.
If you give so much money and buy an electric car and get this !? Mercedes has assembled this car with parts of cars that are not intended to be electric vehicles at all ..
All I hear is bachelor complaining complaining complaining . What a disappointing video.
Doesn't MB had already its first SLS electric? So this should be their 2nd EV. I kept hearing this from other reviewers, too? Am I wrong or are reviewers too lazy to look for references?
looks like a porsche cayenne 😑
Please o please stop with the piano black cheap plastic, have it on a GLC and it's total junk.
Mustache clickbait
It’s too meh... what’s up with Mercedes. Even the gls looks so sedate. The new A class is s proper stunner and so is the quirky upcoming GLB.
VW Add on Tv at the bottom of the screen has a disclaimer for what your Ears here on the Add, so, yes, never believe what you see, hear from Car makers.
The days they use to make beautiful cars are far behind us :(
Guys don’t forget about the electric B Class. That was a thing
5:09 LOL...are these idiots at Merc serious to let stand out the window so you cant rest a arm on the door . omg ! i quit now this vid here and went out to drive my Lexus which seems the better choice !!
Wow,it also tells jokes😎
Is that a fake Rolex I see you’re wearing :o
Pujan Maharjan I think it’s an Omega, a watch for those who know about watches rather than a name.
Omega=Fake Rolex lololol
@@pujanmaharjan4820 Yes exactly. Please stick with the Rolex.
Its quite amazing how you so focus on showing how “average” the car was you didn’t mention the different levels regenerative braking system. Thankful, this is not the first review of this car, I would have thought poorly about it. I am sincerely not impressed with your analysis, but then, well done.
Batchy, please stay yourself, u r good beyond enough not to follow other motor journalists
Why did he say Mercedes is the oldest car maker?? They’re not lol!
My understanding is that they invented the ICE automobile
Daimler Benz is indeed oldest, followed by Peugeot as the second oldest.
got bored after 5 minutes , you should give the specs not look at the stupic
"It'll probably excite..."
Let me stop you right there. This car isn't exciting anyone.
This is a plane,,not a car
Exact back light like Porsche, be creative Mercedes don’t just copy
Like for the review. The "car" is a garbage can.
MY NAME DADY HAMZI.. i eat chocoalte 2 times a week so i can make sexitime time with ladies
It looks like a cheap MG rover.
he complains about little things like windows so dramatically
I thought world's oldest car market was ford??
This EQC is gorgeous but expensive
It's actually Peugeot which was founded in 1810. Mercedes Benz is older than Ford, founded in 1883 under a different name and company. Ford wasn't founded until 1903.
A manual boot, on a expensive suv!
Nooo i could see the buttons
There are tiny black buttons ons the right side of the boot
The back of the car is hideous
Thought this was car wow smh
You are kinda lika a fake carwow
Twuj stray jezdzil bym
The front of the car looks like a joke really
When I turned on this video and saw this reporter, I spat on the shirt and table mat. Now you owe me a T-shirt and a rug!
What a mockery of the audience! Are you out of your mind? What is your personnel department doing there !?
Another pointless SUV. When will this trend die?
The presenter is a total spanner
Carwow’s better
What running costs did Mercedes factor in? Unreliability is a money maker for Mercedes.
Mercedes g wagon electric would be the best electric car this is the ugliest car ever
Dude. The G-Wagen is a phone booth on wheels. Its drag coefficient would be horrible for an electric car.
Would it be too much to ask for a concise report on the car without all the theatrics? Why do all these car videos have idiots doing them?
The front end is dead ugly!
Model X is much better
Very vague statement. 😂
Not having storage space up front under the bonnet is a real lazy piece of work on Mercedes part. The thing we keep hearing about EVs is the architecture makes for more space compared to an ICE car....yet this thing gives no extra space. I don't want to waste boot space with cables and chargers, I want that crap up front in a storage bin....who wants to be putting dirty wet cables in the boot with your luggage or shopping, or wrestling them into a storage bag when you're out in the wind and rain. Come on merc.....tell your designers to try harder!!!!
Boring
Why Boring, because it’s informative well produced and light hearted ....fail to see how it could be improved
The video is great I meant the car.
Ugliest car ever
