Very informative. As a CBT psychotherapist, I am curious to know if there is a complete shift from challenging cognitions to an acceptance approach in sport psych? Or is cognitive restructuring and the tackling of unhelpful thinking styles still seen as an option in sport Psych?
Good question. I think we'd be silly to throw the baby out with the bathwater. While acceptance based approaches might be fruitful in the heat of a match, and mindfulness might help some athletes refocus, there's other meta-analyses showing cue words, for example, can serve a similar function.
Ohh 😲, I'm looking for ways to reduce my anxiety, but when performing music in front of others, bc I literally stopped playing since I felt completely muted by the thought of being judged by others... I feel like the stress and confidence that is required for both athletes and musicians might be similar, it's fascinating, *just in a way hehehe, the feeling itself is detrimental, but how both areas could be of help to each other- I hope to find more help with this through my journey, 😊 thank u for this insight !
I think he's been a strong advocate for the practice, and I admire a few recent RCTs putting the app to the test using rigorous designs. The app is slick and the instruction is clear for many of my clients. However, I'm yet to see any data that it works well (e.g., see Noone, C., & Hogan, M. J. (2018). A randomised active-controlled trial to examine the effects of an online mindfulness intervention on executive control, critical thinking and key thinking dispositions in a university student sample. BMC Psychology, 6(1), 13.)
