  • True Kvlt is always an interesting term in the black metal community. To be a purist or someone with the truest of reputation, you have to be labeled 'true kvlt', whether as a project/band or simply a listener. However, throughout time, the goalpost from what constitutes being considered true kvlt has changed. Let's talk about that!

I wanted to talk a little bit about how True Kvlt as a term tends to always be changing in terms of what makes something true kvlt to begin with! What're your opinions on the term and what it stands for and are YOU true kvlt?! Be sure to let me know down below!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Being called a poser for ALSO listenning to Immortal and Dissection while still enjoying plenty of basement quality 100 monthly listenner bands was the moment i realised "trve kvlt" is a black metal brainrot term used for nerds to maintain a constant circle jerk.
I find it beyond ironic how the people that pride themselves with being individuals that go against the norms also advocate fot following a set of rules regarding what you should/shouldnt like otherwise youre considered an outcast.
Listen to what you like and mind your own business type shit

I think the idea of Trve Kvlt or whatever is kind of silly for no reason. It is kind of funny though.

I can't imagine Black scene without TRVE KVLT. It was basically a foundation of it. Separation from other metal subgenres. Same goes with rawnes. A lot if bands don't sound raw, but those who do they instantly sound as TRVE.

“Trve Kvlt” is such a hilarious and childish term. I don’t give a crap about it, really.

Black Metal is an epitome of gatekeeping. The basis, the foundation. So I think it is pointless to criticise the genre for that

You touched on an interesting topic that I have been thinking about a lot lately. I even had an idea to write a note or an article about it. However, since I came across a video on this topic, I will share my theses here.
It seems to me that the popular point of view that true cult is childish is fundamentally wrong.
Here I would like to say a few words about how I understand the relationship between the underground and the mainstream. From my point of view, the underground is a chaotic and fertile environment, a collective unconscious, if you like, in the darkness of which new images are constantly being born. The mainstream, on the contrary, is a refined environment that does not have its own vitality; it needs to feed on something. Emanations from the underground feed mass culture with new images, which gradually, being purified and brought to a "perfect" or more convenient form for mass consumption, become a product. This is how many cultural phenomena die, particularly musical genres, which, being absorbed and digested by the mainstream, lose their edge and essence, turning into advertising.
In the case of Black Metal, its elitism is a unique genetic program, an axiomatic principle sewn into the very essence of the genre. We have seen many waves of its outpourings into the mainstream, it has given a lot, in aesthetic terms, to all kinds of pop, but it itself will never become it, as long as there are people who know that a true cult is where there are no crowd views, and that it is necessary to make an effort to find "true" examples of this art. A Black Metal band can become popular, but at the same time it ceases to be true black metal. Thus, the essence of the genre always slips into darkness. I think that is why the phenomenon of Black Metal is so diverse and tenacious. I'll finish (sorry for the pathos) with a quote I heard in a little-known Finnish horror film: "Hell is not a fiery pit. It's just a dirty place behind God's back."
P.S. I also apologize for the Google translation, I don't speak English very well

Trve Kvlt, to me, will always cast my mind to "Les Legions Noire". Deliberately raw, to the point of excessive, incredibly niche and obscure, borderline impenetrable. Only for the most devoted and deranged. Mutiilation, Aakon Keetreh, Vlad Tepes etc.
Of course now it's a meaningless buzzword thrown around on r/BlackMetal or r/BlackMetalCringe.

Like most things, Black Metal is hierarchical. The Black Metal elitists who adhere to the "old ways" have their "true cult" and the posers have their cosplay, pretend they like the music and rarely - if ever! - attend a concert or purchase an album.

At this point the scene needs to come to terms with the fact that "trv kvlt" was a movement started by a bunch of tryhard teens who just happened to get popular by being D I C K S. Then again, leave it to the perpetually infantilized to continue the idea into adulthood 🙄🙄. As much as i live for Black Metal, the elitists in our community are cringe AF😂

huh... I've never heard of this term. would that be for something like Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult? or does it get even more difficult and obscure? I guess just listen to whatever I can can find out there that is accessible financially too. If it's something I have to pay a lot for to get a super difficult to find tape then I'm probably not going to be able to listen to it.
I'm probably way off on this too. sorry if I'm misunderstanding the topic

“Guys were so different..instead of doing something a bit traditional of a metal song, our lead singer, Bjorn, instead of doing what his job title is, he rips a loud ass fart in the mic and then screams indecipherable bullshit that somehow is about societal issues for 30 minutes straight…”

I think it might be a bit like with punk. Of courss there is a certain kind of music, one thinks about, when we talk about punk, but in the end of the day it is more about not giving a fuck.
I guess it´s also about being a misanthrop, but if you are really that misanthropic, you naturally wouldn´t care about belonging to a scene, so something about the black metal ethos always seemed kind of contradictory to me.

the term really doesn't have an objective definition, it mostly just boils down to what one sees as having the true black metal essence so it's definitely subjective and I wouldn't say the term necessarily refers to any specific sound (however most BM fans don't use the term unironically and I feel like it's mostly a lot of kids really obsessed with raw bm that use the term, but I'd still say a lot of people deep into bm do still consider some stuff more true than some other stuff if you know what I mean)

Anyone who thinks they are better than someone for liking or not liking a piece of music they didn't create is fake as fuck and they obviously don't have anything worthwhile going on in their life, so they have to live vicariously through bands that they gatekeep and prevent from making money by not allowing everyone to like them. Metal elitists have the intelligence level of competitive sports fans
