I wasn't born until '94 so I had no idea how insanely popular the turtles were at the start of the 90s. It's cool to see this bit of pop culture history that i had missed out on
You have made my day friend! Although the ninja turtles are still popular now, I made this video so it won't be forgotten how absolutely gigantic they were at the time. Thank you very much for commenting!
@@petercostaarchive5482power Rangers
I was born in 2001 and grew up with the 03 and '12 series. I never watched the 87 series until later. So it's cool to see how it all started
97’ 🤦🏾♂️😂😂 I missed every fucking thing… but I got a little taste of that 90s feel.
Wish I was in turtle mainia
It's crazy how a small joke between buddies turns into the most iconic characters and universe in modern day pop culture
That´s true, thanks for watching and commenting
I was born in '83, so I was placed smack dab in the middle of the nineties Turtle craze at the right age. This film was so nostalgic for me. Great work.
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching and commenting. Regards
83 here too
Yep, same here.
84 love tmnt😍
My childhood. I feel bad for any kid that wasn't young during early 90's.
That's quite true! Thank you for commenting and for watching the video.
I was a kid in the 80's, and a teenager in the (mid) 90's... which I would argue was even better than being a young kid in the 90's.
Because, as I was a little older, I had been a Turtle fanatic since 1987... and I remember the 90's with more clarity than I remember the 80's. Though I do remember my first cartoon love "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" just as well as I remember the Ninja Turtles.
I just prefer TMNT!
Edit: It wasn't until after my 40th birthday when I learned that one of my all time favorite wrestlers (Kevin Nash; aka "Diesel") played the role of "Super Shredder" in "TMNT II; The Secret of the Ooze"!
Blew my freaking mind when I found out!
I wasn't born until 93 lol
Batmania and turtle mania were great to experience
YEAH ME TO WELL THAT LIFE FOR YOU 😏
I was part of the Turtle Craze myself in the late 90's as a young child, good memories!
Me too. Thanks for watching and commenting. Regards
Turtle mania was so cool. I still say My Favorite Decades. Etapa. Best Era Ever
Turtle craze in the late 90's?
As I remember, the turtle craze started around 1990, and ended after the abysmal "TMNT III".
One thing I'm sure of?
It definitely had ended by the time the original cartoon ended. Well before the late 90's.
No disrespect... I just think we're talking about two different iterations of the Ninja Turtles.
I felt like I was the only one who had TMNTs in the mid-late 90s. Everyone at school was all into Power Rangers
@@stephenvanbellinghen933 we all had Both. Also ninja turtles beat up power Rangers
I was born in 84 when Turtles launched their comics and enjoyed them with the 1987 series. From there on, Turtles would always be part of my life and I couldn't be prouder! Also April o'neil gave me a happy birthday wish thanks to a buddy!
Thanks for your comment, turtles are also part of my life
ruclips.net/video/AWPllx6AtRY/видео.html
I was also born in 1984, and thus got into Turtlemania. 😁🐢
This is incredible. I'm 41 now and this brought it all back.
Thanks man! Glad you like it!
Same here. Thx for the memories.
41 currently myself couldn't agree more
"Some critics didn't like it." Cut to a grumpy old British guy 😂😂 As a grumpy old British guy myself I love this 😂😂
Haha thanks for watching and commenting
Your comment made me laugh in agreement haha. "Talking turtles! How ghastly!" He goes on to grudgingly admit that kids are very interested in that stuff. It's not going to be Shakespeare quality storylines, but kids are into that.
This is an AMAZING documentary on how it was to live during turtlemania in the early 90s. Amazing use of all this archival footage from the era. Completely impressed here. Well done!
Thank you for watching and for your kind comment. I'm glad you like the documentary, it was a lot of work. Regards
I was a giant TMNT fan in the late 80’s-early 90’s (and still am). I was born in 87.
Still have a ton of the toys and the movies, the 80’s cartoon on dvd and the comic too. Still, somehow felt gate kept by the “older kids”, and I was too young to be part of that “day one” club, despite being a rabid fan.
Eventually, when Power Rangers became a thing, I kinda became hyper focused on that franchise instead, but still love TMNT and cannot WAIT for the Cowabunga collection to come out on PS4 and Switch.
I want that cowabunga collection also. Thanks for watching and commenting. Regards
I was born in the wrong generation
Always makes me chuckle when people freak out about kids playing rough.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
They do?
Well... they would've died from a stroke if they saw what me, my brother, and our friends did in our back yards every day trying to emulate the WWF!
I "played Ninja Turtles" in the late 80's, and that shit was TAME in comparison...
Straight up unprotected chair shots, REAL submissions, and NO PADDING for "bomb" or "drop" maneuvers... just dirt, and sometimes some grass. Of course, this was in the mid 90's, but still...
We fucked each other up!
@@thisisnotachannel yeah man. when I grew up (born 97, so early 2000s) kindergardens and schools started pushing back against any games that involved the rougher aspects of physical play. (It didn’t work, we had huge turf wars on the playground lol)
It’s even worse now, I've heard.
I find that kinda insanse because, yeah: sometimes me and my mates *were* too rough with each other and went too far when playing, but that’s how we learned where the line was drawn.
Going back to tmnt, It's not uncommon for a show like that to be seen as bad influence because it ”glorifies violence” but kids are pretty chaotic by nature. They're gonna fight with sticks with or without having watched tmnt lol
I bring this up because I can imagine kids playing tmnt must've freaked parents out back then, which would explain why the 87 show became more goofy after the first 5 episodes.
@@fartinator1 Schools are ridiculous now. My grade school had a no dodgeball policy.
Parents hated the 1990 movie because the Turtles actually HIT PEOPLE with their exotic martial arts weapons. But I though that was one thing they got right and was a 100% improvement over the cartoon.
1990 was the year and Turtlemania hit me like an avalanche! I was that kid in Toys r Us running to the ninja turtle section. Watched the entire series and LOVED the movies. Thank you to the creators for having a great impact on my childhood.

@@petercostaarchive5482 The pleasure is mine!
I'm about halfway through, I gotta say I never realized how much shade they got from adults back in the day.
I dont know if it was that big of a deal, but it seems they had quite a big backlash at the beginning. Thanks for watching and commenting
I was 6 years old back in 1988 when I first saw the old cartoon show. I got hooked immediately. I soon had all the toys, never missed an episode, made my own nunchucks... I was there for the craze. As I grew older I got into the comics and that's what kept me a fan. First the Mirage run and then Image Comics run by Frank Fosco and Gary Carlson. And I've never stopped being a fan. I'm 40 years old and waiting impatiently for the new game, Shredders Revenge.

15:00 I was born and raised in St. Louis Park, MN and I bought most of my Turtle figures at that EXACT Target store. Holy Bananas!!! I think it was around the time that the 2nd movie turtles figures were released that Target moved the Turtles merch mostly to the other side of the isle, although I still recall oddball Turtles items still on that same side, like the Leonardo Cave Turtle box set.
I have a very distinct memory of picking out Genghis Frog but my mom wasn't a fan, so she urged me to instead by Ace Duck. When she wasn't looking I switched the figures and it wasn't until check out that she noticed what I did and she gave me that disappointed mom look. She bought me Genghis Frog regardless.

This is such a wonderful retrospective of a unforgettable golden age to be a child. It brought tears to my eyes. I lived such an amazing time period and didn't know it. I wish such experience could be shared by children today. Unfortunately our society has decided this is not considered agenda friendly. 😢
Art does not die my friend, we will always have these cartoons and no matter how much there are agendas with which we agree or not, the art of these cartoons will continue to exist. I watched Tom and Jerry on TV and was born long after the original premiere. That's why it's important to share these things and not let them get lost. Thank you very mutch for your comment. Regards

TMNT from me is just like Star Wars, DC comics in Ghostbusters, properties I liked as a kid and I’m still a fan of today but even as a kid my brother and I felt like there were some things that they didn’t need to do with the turtles. We were so excited for the third movie and it was the first time my brother and I remember being in a movie theater and asked our dad if we could leave the movie early because it was such a bad movie. It did start to feel like they would try to sell kids a 2 x 4 as long as it had the turtles logo on it at one point. We also remember getting the ninja turtles concert VHS tape for Christmas or something like that and again even as a kid I thought it was terrible. Really ever since the second movie came out I feel like I’ve been waiting for someone to take the turtle seriously again. We live in an age where DC, Marvel and Star Wars are making billions of dollars with movies and television shows people love. I honestly wish Nickelodeon would sell the turtles to somebody else because I don’t think Nickelodeon knows what to do with a comic book property. Do you rebooted movies which we’ve gotten to of, I actually like the first one and I was more excited for the second one because Stephen Amell was going to be Casey Jones and we were finally getting bebop and rocksteady. But that movie made the same mistake with the turtles that started happening Around 1992 and 1993 with the turtles and it felt too tacky and didn’t know if it wanted to be a comic book movie for the entire family like DC and Marvel do or a movie that was targeting five-year-old’s. I know they can make a great turtles movie or a franchise of a series of movies that both kids and adults can enjoy it’s not that hard to do and I really hope we get that eventually because the turtles deserve better than what they’ve been getting the last few years.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with the ninja turtles. I think the same as you on some things. The third movie was not very good, although I have good memories of the musical tour that I was able to enjoy here in my country as well. Thanks for commenting and watching. Regards

With regards to the violence - just talk to your kids.
I watch the TMNT movie with my nephews (9 and 6), and when the scene with Casey jones came on, and I paused the video.
I asked "now that the woman has her purse back, do you think you should chase down the bad guys, or call the police"
They both said "call the police". They can understand that the characters in movies might make bad decisions, and that the movie is a fantasy.
We also discussed how all the kicking and punching is just dancing. It's all choreographed by actors, and kids get that.

I vividly remember in 1990 watching ducktales, chip and dale rescue rangers then at 4pm it was time for the turtles. I stuck with the Archie series all the way to it ended in 1996 and followed next mutation as well
Ducktales was an awesome cartoon also
@@petercostaarchive5482 yes it was. I often watched ducktales on tape as i was just getting home from school at 3:30. We usually ate dinner around 4 or so and we got to watch tmnt as a family. My dad enjoyed tailspin though not so much me
I was in the middle of the craze in the early 90s.
In my household, we (my brothers and I) didn't have tons of turtle merchandise. We had action figures, but we only got them for birthdays or xmas. I remember once Xmas, one of my mom's best friends bought us like 4 Casey Jones' 😂😂 Me and my brothers were NOT mad. I think the absolute biggest turtle merchandise we ever acquired was the turtle van, and then the beach cruiser buggy that came out a little later. Never had the blimp. Never had the playset.
We never BOUGHT a Shredder. But we found one at a playground once. Pretty cool. My brother got Bebop for his birthday. I got Rocksteady for mine. I know that kids today have cool things to check out. But sometimes I wish that I could share with them what the turtle mania was about right as it was started and happening. There was nothing in the world like getting a holographic TMNT sticker out of a quarter machine at the supermarket. Nothing was cooler than TMNT t shirt. I remember my brother had this pink shirt with Michelangelo sitting at a school desk looking sad with a speech bubble that said "When's lunch?". Smh- when the arcade game came out- mama Mia- it was earth moving 😂 -sigh- how we can't appreciate glory while we're standing in it.

The television footage and news reports are not something you see in most ninja turtle documentaries. This really showed the reach of the series into pop culture. Someone talking about it does not compare to seeing archive footage of it. This really took me back.

I’ll never forget seeing all 3 films in theaters while wearing my Michelangelo mask. This is an outstanding documentary! Consider me subbed! Now i’m totally in the mood to play these video games again on my channel. Cowabunga!
Thank you, I'm glad you like it. This documentary was a lot of work but it was worth it! Regards
Was (and still am) a huge turtle fan. Watching the movies and shows in the early 90's. I had a bunch of toys left in their packages until my mother got mad at us and burned them all up. Lol
The toys you see in the documentary are also from my childhood. Thanks for commenting
I love Kevin Eastman and all but I wish Peter laird got more shine .
Thanks for watching and commenting. Regards

Excellent video I remember seeing the first TMNT movie and taking a pic with Ralph who was my turtle. Man this & Pokemania were great times to be alive good times!!
Glad you like and thanks for watching and commenting
I also remember the last 3 Archie comics where a mini series running from November 1995 to January1996. That issue had the turtles beating up some very ranger looking guys. It was a joke at how things had changed as a jab at the power rangers but it was sad for then 12 year old me to read because it was true: rangers where the new "it" franchise

I was born in 85 and I feel I was the perfect age for it too
First movie I saw in the theatre was the original TMNT movie
This documentary really hit home
Very nostalgic
Cool doc. Have to say that 80’s overshadowing the early 90’s is way off lol. 80s were dark, cold war tensions, crack. 90’s was an uplifting new decade. Have had many conversations with other people who feel the same.
You know that after watching it several times I thought the same thing, I'm not entirely satisfied with that intro i wrote. But what happened is that I thought of this documentary about the turtles as a trilogy together with the one about Star Wars that talks about the 70s, the one about Heman that talks about the 80s and this one about the 90s, so by wanting to differentiate them maybe I missed a bit to the point. If you are interested, the other two documentaries are also on the channel. Thank you very much for watching and commenting
Really enjoying your content. Thanks
Thank you. glad you like it. Regards
I remember bothering my mom every weekend to get a new tmnt figure lol

I was one of those kids in the 90's! 💯

The next mutation and 2003 show was my generation franchise and everything changed when I ran into the mirage comics which made the 87 cartoon reputation suck to me
