Even if being gay was a choice, why would it matter? People chose to be mean all the time but you don't see people attacking them! Edit: I know that being gay isn't a choice, what I'm saying is that if it was it shouldn't matter
@@klinxium8627 Since I'm a gay man, I can only talk from my own experience and say for sure that it is no choice of mine. If we are being reasonable, however, sexual attraction is perhaps one of the most deeply ingrained impulses in the biology of any living organism, and it's certainly one of the oldest adaptations. Saying that we can change it on a whim of a choice is nonsensical, no matter how we look at it. We have trouble understanding how much choice we have in the most human of behaviours, let alone a set of behaviours that go back to our earliest vertebrate ancestors.

I’ve learned more in a 13 minute video than I’ve learned in an entire year of biology. There was nothing nearly as useful or interesting in that class Great job Matt
In my biology class we spent a good 60% of the time learning about bugs and birds, a good 30% of the time learning about photosynthesis, a good 5% about how the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, and 5% on actual human biology. Luckily, my teacher was good enough to teach us about evolution.

Even if being gay was a choice, why would we? We get attacked and straight up murdered, like, yes, this is my decision, kill me. Nobody wants to be bullied or hurt or murdered so why choose the option that gets you exactly that? Just let us love people damnit.

Well, within the first two minutes, it makes a claim that is actively contradicted by the source it cites. The video says that 10-11% of the population is LGBTQ, but the Pew Research survey it cites specifically states that it didn't try to determine the proportion of the population that is LGBTQ, but that other surveys put the number at 3.5-5%.

"8-25% of lgbtq people have at least one person in the immediate past generation of their family who identify as the same sexual orientation or gender identity as they do" Time to have a serious conversation with my uncles !
With 1 in 20 people being lgbtq+ (some data I found on the internet, its probably more) that makes perfect sense. If your immeiate past generation consits of 5 people you would expect a 25% chance of at least one of them being lgbtq+. For four people it would be 20%, three people 15%, two people 10%, one person 5%. It does not prove a genetic link at all, the 8%-25% counts for non-lgbtq people too.
My mom's pretty sure my uncle's gay, but my grandparents are a touch homophobic and he relies on their financial support since he's a music professor who's never gotten tenure, so even if he is, he'd never say. There is even more. NPR talked to a scientist studying DNA and behavior connections. In the mice study they noticed 'plaques' that form on DNA as the mouse developed. They studied mice that received motherly attention and those who did not. This effected where plaques developed on the DNA and how social, empathetic a mouse was later in life. So environment can effect DNA and who we are. But still most of this is out of our control. Love the research you put into this episode. 🌈🌈❤️❤️🌈🌈

It makes a lot of sense to me that rather than the 'default' sexuality being straight, the default sexuality of humans (and possibly all sexual creatures) is actually being bisexual/pan sexual. I mean, part of a creatures quote-on-quote purpose is to reproduce, hence sexual desire. Which may lead one to believe being straight is the default, since it can lead to procreation. But considering homosexuality and bi/pansexuality is seen across many creatures, maybe the default is just being horny and our genetic quirks and upbringings influence whether we prefer one gender over others? Also, I found it interesting that there were much fewer lesbians than gay men in the pie chart (can't consider that an accurate representation of the world's population but still). I wonder if this is because females are more likely to consider themselves bisexual than males? In a way, many straight men (and possibly gay men) are more pressured by society to stick to being attracted to one gender. Obviously there are many bi/pan males and many lesbian and straight females, but it's just a thought. I wonder if many people have the potential to be bi/pan but societal standards and their own determinations have caused them to choose one gender over the other, and perhaps men are more susceptible to this (not that this is a bad thing, just a curiosity). Or maybe this is completely wrong and people are truly just born attracted to one gender over the other in many cases, I'm not sure. Sexuality sure is complicated huh.
I heard that lots of insects are pansexual because they can’t tell the difference between male and female so they mate with as many of their species as possible also some male beetles mate with each other to spread their genes through a third party
"It makes a lot of sense to me that rather than the 'default' sexuality being straight, the default sexuality of humans (and possibly all sexual creatures) is actually being bisexual/pan sexual" You can support something without trying to make it the default thing. You don't have to try and argue it as a majority. You don't HAVE to find ways to justify it. It's perfectly alright for it to not be the norm.
Considering that every girl was raised with the mindset that they have to be with a man at some point, I'm not surprised that they are more bi girls than lesbians but still we have to consider that there are a lot of closeted lesbians who are in het relationships or call themselves bi/straight so the pie chart might not be quite accurate.
Makes sense, I'm straight and I randomly found this in my recomended and it all makes sense now. I respect the LGBTQ community and I highly support it. My mom's friend is gay and I have many friends who are LGBTQ

The learning structure towards everthing is taught, is just completely wrong for centuries... there are enough studies and evidence out there that prove that is possible to learn a lot while still liking it, actually, it's way more effective. the system tries to fit us inside some boxes but in fact, those boxes need to be broken, and new ones, created. that's it
Interesting stuff. It seems unfortunate that so much has to depend on self-identification. For one thing, who can estimate how many people identify under an incorrect label? It would also be interesting to follow up with people after an interval and map out whether identity changes tie to anything. It would be fascinating to see a panel of leading YT presenters from various GRSM categories.
Well we all identified under an incorrect label. That’s what coming out is, it’s telling the world we aren’t all straight. So everyone in a study of gay people would tell you they were once identified in society’s construct as straight but they were gay and so on.
@@PoweredByRainbows I was actually having a double thought - one, that categorization of data could be skewed because researchers had only identification by which to sort it for comparison; two, that it would be interesting to see if there were anything in common among those whose self-identification changed (one could go even deeper and look for predictors of fluidity as opposed to simply better self-knowledge or self-acceptance).

They said that if the gender spectrum is a rainbow, gay people only like one color, let’s say gay men like green and lesbians like red. Bisexual people like both green and red. Pansexual people don’t see all the colors and only see a block of white, but they like white. Omnisexual people see all the different colors but like them all. At least that’s what I heard

Not a single research that was shown, said that being gay is genetic... It only says that the genes are a important factor in the equation. Most of our traits are affected by genes and the ENVIRONMENT. LGBTQ+ people do NOT choose to be like that, but it does not mean that they are defined ONLY by genes. This video, just like every single video who try to "proove" that we are defined by our genes, are biased. I understand the political importance of that way of thinking, but it doesnt mean its true.
i get where you’re coming from but i can’t understand how people in the same / a similar environment to me are straight but i’m not. idk if we will ever truly find out the cause
I believe orientation is not a choice but...the conclusion that it must be in our genes is a stretch. The genes identified are described as being relates to "openess to experiences and risk-taking behavior." The other 80% of LGBTQ+ are not statistically correlated. I hope we can eventually learn why people are who they are. DNA hopefully will be able to point us in the right direction. Be careful for what you wish for though, DNA markers can be or will be edited. If we identify such markers and the genes can be identified than our orientation will suddenly be our or someone else's choice.

I mean... I don't think it's wrong per se tbh (especially if we're talking about females). I'm a questioning bi/pan (I'm sure I'm mostly straight, demisexual, and non-binary but I'm still looking into stuff and still get confused about which label I fall under a lot of the time), and it's only after I was exposed to the concept of LGBT+ and also being in an environment that is more "meh" with talking about sex, porn, and fetishes that I started questioning and researching. Before that, I was dang sure I was a simple straight girl who just was a late bloomer regarding interest in sexual intercourse.
Of course, my example is anecdotal, but I am pretty sure there was a study proving that female sexuality is more affected by societal factors (whereas male sexuality is more affected by innate/biological factors), which would mean environment IS a significant factor (at least for females).
Isn't there a difference between saying something is "socially valid" and "genetically distinct"? Like I don't think our genes would distinguish between bisexual, omnisexual, and pansexual, for example.

Umm... does nobody identifies as ace in the pie chart? We are truly the forgotten ones, even in a video like this. But in itself it is very well done and I’m so happy that finally someone made it so unbiased. On the other hand, I kinda worry it may give more tools to the homophobes. Let me explain: I come from a highly atheist country, and we have this news page where you have to use your actual name to comment, so only certain people are willing register. There are certain groups , mostly people who love debating about politics - usually very negative and conservative things - in the comments. It is not a very high number of people, as on even the most controversial topics there are about 2k comments max. So many of us go to the comments and read them out for fun, because people there are mostly the epitomy of a conservative boomer mentality (example: in an article about women who were born with certain conditions but are now modeling they wrote “I didn’t ask to see it” - even though they clicked and opened the article themselves - and “I don’t see the beauty in it” etc). Comments under lgbt related topics are no more positive really. But the difference is that unlike average religious people, because we are all mostly atheists, they use science to hurt us. I saw mayby 1 or 2 comments about sins, but mostly people used the terms “degenerates” or “abnormal people” to reffer to the lgbt community. So they know very well that sexuality is not a choice and is based on science, yet they use that science to hurt many of us. The worst part is, there is no actual way to dispute them, because the word “degenerates”, although in a very degrading way is actually true.... But hey, at least one of our most known youtubers, who even made an interview with Dalaylama is openly gay and is accepted by many, with around 820k subscribers. Also we do see some gay couples in media, and there are celebrities or their children who are gay, so no biggie really, that 1k people will always exist in every country. But I’m really worried about the use of the term “degenerates” and “abnormal people” as in to reffer to our genes..... It’s almost impossible to win that fight, because we are the minority....
Honestly. With gene therapy getting more research and stuff, I feel like there will be a point where you could change someone’s genes into being gay or straight, however by that point I think we (assuming we live long enough to get there) will be smart enough to understand the ethicality (or lack thereof) of doing that, and that won’t be the first thing that’ll come to our minds when we have that ability to really change someone’s genetics makeup.
I'm still laughing at my fellow Muslim people who think that being gay or being attracted to the same sex is a sin. No, God actually won't punish you for having feelings and thoughts you have no control over, he just said that you're gonna be punished if you have sex with the same sex... In Quran, he never said you will be punished for being gay or having those thoughts that you have no control over which is obviously logical...
Actually it has been proven multiple times that god has no problems with same sex intercourse (via the bible anyways) I don't know if it a different case for the Quran, as to which one you should believe.... well which version of sky daddy you follow isn't for me to tell you.

I am glad to see that research is still ongoing and that the knowledge is becoming more commonplace.
I just love it when people say “Basic Biology” because... maybe they should be educated on more than just a ‘basic’ level because science... it doesn’t quite agree. Like, the only angle that ever makes a lick of sense is reproduction but you could make the same argument for infertile people or those who simply don’t want kids and not like everyone’s just going to start being Homosexual and other forms of Birth exist so I think we’re fine.

@Glory ForFreedom I know what the difference is thank you, My point is that anyone over the age of three would have understood the above comment is a joke and does not need your ‘explanation’
First of all I'm gay, but I think one of the reason why being other than straight took so long to be accepted by older generations is because of the term "sexuality" it self. A lot of them seems to think that its inappropriate to educate children about LGBTQ+ because they think its all about sexual activity, instead of love/attraction.
I knew from a very young age. Didn't know the term but I knew I liked both equally. I'm not planning on telling anyone since I don't feel secure enough to do so.
Being religious is a choice while being gay is not. Religion is just a social construct. No other animals practices homophobic religion! Me trying to throw back at them their logic which makes more sense.
To those people that say being gay is a choice as an excuse to discriminate against the gay community I just ask them why that matters in the first place. Doesn't effect them and doesn't hurt anyone. Just let people live their lives.

But still most of this is out of our control.

this is the best biology class ever! I personally love to study genetics in biology and it's talking about sexual orientation just makes me so happy! this is the best biology class ever, that's it.
According to my psychologist, she truly thinks sexuality is unconsciously malleable to an extent.
A spicy take that I am inclined to agree with
I heard that lots of insects are pansexual because they can’t tell the difference between male and female so they mate with as many of their species as possible also some male beetles mate with each other to spread their genes through a third party
"It makes a lot of sense to me that rather than the 'default' sexuality being straight, the default sexuality of humans (and possibly all sexual creatures) is actually being bisexual/pan sexual"
You can support something without trying to make it the default thing.
People have the audacity to say it's not natural?

It would be fascinating to see a panel of leading YT presenters from various GRSM categories.
Well we all identified under an incorrect label. That’s what coming out is, it’s telling the world we aren’t all straight. So everyone in a study of gay people would tell you they were once identified in society’s construct as straight but they were gay and so on.
Yea sometimes finding your sexuality, gender, and romantic atrraction can be very confusing

I hope we can eventually learn why people are who they are. DNA hopefully will be able to point us in the right direction.
Be careful for what you wish for though, DNA markers can be or will be edited. If we identify such markers and the genes can be identified than our orientation will suddenly be our or someone else's choice.

When homophobes say that gay is being a choice, then why animals have this behavior too? It shows that not only people or humans can have sexual attractions to opposite or other sex. Alot of studies have proven this that animals can also have this behavior.

@@davihomem7342 it’s a little homophobic but I’m generally not too judgy about it because it could just be misinformation from another source. Despite what some people will tell you, we have no control over our sexuality.
@valy0f so you are saying that animals actually choose their partners? As far as scientists say, animals can have a natural chemical reaction that humans have when being attracted to a certain person. In this case, in a certain partner.
@@bluecannibaleyes attraction is natural to human and animals. That's why alot of animals have a certain feature that the main purpose is to atract a certain animal. Both animals and humans have a chemical reaction that can occur when we are attracted to something. Both also have some specific things we do to atract someone or something. People are mad whenever they say that being homosexual is a choice, because people tend to say that you can change whom you are attracted to while they tend to say that you can't push a straight man to being gay. Which screams "being a hyprocrite". And the only inconsistency in here is people believes that this animal behavior is natural but not when humans do it.

I've seen a couple of people in the comments saying that there are environmental factors to sexuality and using Identical twins as 'proof' however they don't seem to understand that even the dna of Identical twins is slightly different from the other.
@@msk-qp6fn there is a difference between choosing and not knowing who you are until you have the words to describe yourself.

This is very interesting, I never thought about this, but now I want to research it!
Umm... does nobody identifies as ace in the pie chart? We are truly the forgotten ones, even in a video like this. But in itself it is very well done and I’m so happy that finally someone made it so unbiased.
On the other hand, I kinda worry it may give more tools to the homophobes. Let me explain:
I come from a highly atheist country, and we have this news page where you have to use your actual name to comment, so only certain people are willing register.
The dislikes are the homophobes.
Well no fucking shit amy
Ikr those kinds of people piss me off 🙄
Actually it has been proven multiple times that god has no problems with same sex intercourse (via the bible anyways) I don't know if it a different case for the Quran, as to which one you should believe.... well which version of sky daddy you follow isn't for me to tell you.

Whenever I argue with my dad he goes to thinks like: “You are just a genetic mistake!”
And when I can disprove it he says: “Oh yeah...RUclips knowledge is always right!”
You just can’t argue with him.
This video is quite wrong. You said that up to 25% of homosexual behaviour is caused by the 5 genetics markers, and it is indeed right. But then you talked about the other 75%, and you said that they were other genes, which is just wrong. Even in the study that YOU linked in the description it says that the other 75% is caused by other factors, such as environment, and how a child develops their sexuality. I still can't figure out how you got that wrong, since in every article about that study there was written this thing, even in the one you linked in the description. Btw i am not homophobic, but i already read that study and infact i remembered it differently, then i checked and i was right.
I know from experience of denial that, for me, being gay is simply not a choice. I born 🏳️🌈 & I love it.
