According to Lord and Morse the improv segments were always an adventure and they had a special chemistry. I've seen DP several times, going back to the 70s and during the period of this tour, I thought Gillan's voice was at, or near its best. The band has stayed together for so long because they love to play. 2017 is their last live tour. Why do they still tour? Simple - demand. They remain one of the highest-grossing acts in the world. Admit it - if you were able to do it at their age you would too.

When Jon left the band it took Steve some time to adjust to Don. Great as Don is Steve has said that Jon was so very special and had the best ears, he could hear something, immediately play it and and harmonise with it. Don can play what Jon could but he lacks that special something, including charisma, that made Jon Lord so very good. One year at a Sunflower Jam Don was not a happy bunny about Jon getting up to play with them, and you could see why because the band went up several gears as soon as Jon was with them. THE top tier of all-time great keyboardists are Jon, Keithe Emerson and Rick Wakeman, with Jon being my personal favourite. 'Purpendicular' album and tour was one of Purple's very best and is still their best with Steve. Having said that, the most recent three albums with Bob Ezrin are wonderful and have sold really well with 'Whoosh!' reaching number three in the UK charts - the last time they got that high here was with 'Deepest Purple,' with got to number one in 1980! Pretty damn special for a band that was formed 52 years ago! And you're right about Gillan, he sang very well on this 'Purpendicular' tour.

@@ronnienose8608 Listen to interplay between Morse and Airey on the Whoosh... album. The whole band really meshed well under Ezrin's latest production. And the Address, Nothing at All, and The Long Way Round are good examples. IMHO, the best release, song for song since Machine Head.

I saw Steve Morse several times when he was with The Dregs in the late 70s/early 80s and the guy never played a song the same way twice. John Pettruci saw The Dregs and watching Morse (especially on a song called "The Bash"), it made John realize that there was a whole other level he had to get to. John cites Steve as his main influence and the 2 are good friends. At that concert, Steve signed an 8x10 for John and next to his autograph he wrote "Practice".

It still amazes me that Purple was not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame until just a couple of years ago. They pioneered the way for other bands and the Hall put the Beasty Boys, short-lived bands with no musical talent and rap artists in long before they inducted Purple???!!! The Hall has become a joke. The Steve Miller band was inducted the same year as Purple. Find the acceptance speech where Steve Miller ripped the Hall for becoming what it has. Well said.

I agree, and having listened to some of the bootlegs from his time with Purple I think he would've been an even better fit than Steve (don't get me wrong I do enjoy Steve's work with the band), and could play blues better - his solo on 'When A Blind Man Cries' was beautiful.

@@ronnienose8608 I agree with everything you said. I even had to check the name to make sure it wasn't me who made that comment sometime ago.
Satch was a surprisingly good fit, he actually altered his playing approach so as to fit Deep Purple's sound. I can't say the same thing about Morse, which makes it kinda jarring to hear him play older material. The new stuff is really good, tho.
