      Did you try to apply some other varnish on it? I'm thinking about sanding some chinese student violin as it has some cheap hard varnish on it. Curious how much the sound would improve if I would put some more expensive varnish on it that has better flexibility parameters.

    Looking forward to seeing the violin completed and hearing it played. Also the procedure to, I don't know the proper term, "break-in" by playing it at various different tones to cause a mellow "voice" when music is played. That is a beautiful piece of art, Maestro. If I were 50 years younger I would ask for an apprenticeship.

    • @Tostra1997
      @Tostra1997 4 года назад

      Yes, I'm aware of that. I don't even considermyself able to do a "perfect" finish yet, si doing an antiqued one is probably far fetched for me. I have beeen fairly successful with antiquing for touchups, but I don't think I'm able to do a whole instrument. The challenge is tempting though!
      I'm looking forward to hearing your approach to antiquing, actually :-)

    This was very interesting to watch, and your work is beautiful! I would like to ask some questions, if that's okay with you. First, when you sand between coats what grit do you use? Is it important to sand everywhere, even in small crevices? How do you know when you have sanded enough? And lastly, do you add any driers to the varnish, or do you use it as it comes from Joha? I hope this is not too many questions! Thank you!

    • @tkat6442
      @tkat6442 Год назад

      I have been looking at more of your wonderful videos, including on where you show your technique for applying a layer of varnish, and I find that a lot of my questions are now answered, along with more I hadn't thought of. I think I have been using too coarse a grit, and I've been doing it dry, so I will now use 2400 micromesh with water like you did in the other video. My project is actually a bassoon refinishing, and the advice I got elsewhere involved adding artist paints as color (bassoons tend to need a darker stain than violins usually have) and also a manganese dryer. I don't know if the addition of artist paint might slow the drying time without the manganese dryer. If so, maybe I don't need the dryer in the clear coats on top. I also have been spreading the varnish with my finger with a vinyl glove. This is my first venture into finishing, so I am learning a lot as I go, including a lot from your videos! I have built a UV drying cabinet, using the kit available from International Violin, with a ventilation fan and a disco ball motor to keep the work in motion. I know some parts of my process are different from what you do; I'm doing my best to take in a lot of information and put it together into something that works for me. Thanks so much for your great videos, and if you see anything in what I wrote that sounds like a disaster in the making, please tell me, I'm all ears!

      @maestrokimon  3 года назад

      Hello Roberto. Thank you for your kind words. I didn't do anything after the last layer. I like that i can still see the marks left by the brush, that gives a real "hand made" look to the instrument. But sanding and polishing is always an option.

      In my opinion the varnish matter is overestimated and especially by The Strad. The varnish is only one part of a very complicated instrument where everything matters: from that wood quality till the strings. The varnish is one of the most difficult parts to understand what regards it's effect on the sound so (in my opinion) it has been overrated. I have made several videos on the varnish and on the ones I use, have a look if you want!
