Goddamn this is a masterpiece, I'm used to the silly shorts, the arguing, the memes...I'm only halfway and this is beautiful. Rowan pulls so much emotion from what I once thought was a hilarious running gag
I like to imagine Baelin was one of the earliest NPCs in the game, and the devs hadn't implemented immunity for NPCs yet so they just gave him absurdly high stats
I mean, considering Willow is able to fully understand Baelin, it means there is dialogue programed. Only the players hear the one dialogue line. So I buy into this theory
@@christopherdavidson17 I had a slightly different theory that Willow's ability to understand him was a function of being a "quest" NPC. I notice in other skits that even when the adventurers are "silent" the NPCs can always interpret what they mean. So I figured it's just a function of being a "quest" NPC as opposed to regular NPCs like Greg who still only hear the one line.
@@olandir Greg literally loses his sheep every day and sends people on a quest to retrieve them. He also has a main quest line that escorts adventurers through the whole of the Honeywood area. He's both a quest giver and a quest NPC. And Greg is like the only one with a skit dedicated to going ape shit crazy on Baelin because he won't stop saying the same thing. It's more or less an "I am Groot" gag, with undertones of them being in the same situation, both being preprogrammed automatons who are trapped on their respective routes. It's at the point where the adventurer is about to kill her because she "dare not stray from the path" that Baelin makes a conscious decision to stray from his and take over the role of the reluctant protagonist. And it ends with him gaining the ability to chose his actions by what he sees as right and wrong without simply barreling down the same route everyday like a robot, oblivious to what is happening to those around him.
Right, that would totally stand next to Da Vinci paintings or the pyramids. I dare you to find any 50+ comments YT video without anyone yelling "omg this is a masterpiece, total genius and best thing that will ever be made"...

My favourite part of this is that Baelin basically followed the classic Hero's Journey. Status quo, call to adventure, refusal, discovery, point of no return.... all in just 30 minutes, and seven words (plus gaffaw). Nice.
@@itisALWAYSR.A. ...Wow, you're right. It's a Viva La Dirt League video, so rewatching it is a given, but now I'm going to have more to enjoy next watch through with that in mind.
I've found this channel quite recently and been watching compilations for couple of weeks now and today YT suggested this video. I can't believe that such a simple and short story could be as captivating, entertaining and touching as this masterpiece. You guys are just incredible. Hats off an kudos to you!
Rowan is a great actor. Not many people could have enough intent in their intonations to go through such range of emotions and character development with a single line of dialogue.
Wow. That was an incredible half-hour story. Thanks, Alan for writing it, Adam and Alan for directing it. Too many to name, but the stunt crew and choreograher, just the right balance of flash and substance in the fights. Supporting cast, you keep the magic alive throughout. Makeup and costumes, cinematographers, production folk, sound folk, editing folk, the entire back office and support … take a bow, please. Three years later, your efforts are not lost on me. Ever. Ben, you’re just a wonderful talent. Phoenix, you carried a load with grace and gravity. And Rowan. My heart-warmed, standing applause. Thanks, VLDL. My imagination is afire.
What a message, I actually saw that too. Reminds me of the saying, Life is about the Journey not the destination. Yeah...Bealin's Route is perfect for showing that.
Here we are 2024, watching it again. Still the best. Just want you to know that I would totally pay to see an expanded version of this in the theater in a heartbeat.
I would love a follow up with the "Adventurer", that since HE did not completed and received the reward for the quest, it is bugged and he is unable to fast travel ever again
I’ve never been so emotionally attached to a character 5 minutes into their story, let alone them only repeating the same 3 lines. Even Hodor didn’t enthrall me so much.
@R.Y.G wdym by you thought that it would be a political fantasy drama, but lacks logic? And i think the story is fine until like season 4 or 5 (can't remember) My example for something that is way overrated is definitely Squid Game, sure it's ok, but it gets really boring real quick My point is i don't think that GoT is *way* overrated :)
Agreed. THIS is good story telling, and they didn't need millions to do it. If you have a good story and are good at telling it, you don't need much else! Very much enjoyed this FAR more than I expected to.
This right here proves that storytelling isn't about dialogue, it is about the story, the characters, and the world. This 33min short had more heart and better story then some feature length movies.
Including the one I stopped watching (just could not stomach one more minute of it) right before I came here! This was like a breath of fresh air. It's a good day for fishing! (and I don't even like fishing)
I finally watched this after it kept popping up in my feed. After binge watching most of your other videos that poke fun at the tropes and logic of rpg games, I figured it'd be a longer version of those videos. I was not expecting myself to get so invested in this very unique story, even tearing up at the end. You guys put so much effort and heart into this, and nailed it so much better than big budget Hollywood studios. You found a way to still poke fun, while making this a love letter to rpg games. Studios should watch this, and take notes (I'm looking at you, Netflix's The Witcher.)
I feel like I committed a crime watching this and not paying for an admission. This should’ve been in movie theaters not RUclips. Absolutely incredible work guys, a true masterpiece.
These videos are becoming a class of their own. I mean.. holiwood typically just rinse and repeat the same old movies /themes /garbage.. but this is actually something new /different. The most major part of the film is the storyline.. and they did pretty good on that.
I can't believe i just discovered this. The story, atmosphere, music, acting and production for this fan funded project is absolutely amazing!! Great work guys!! Greetings from Nepal🙏
@@Acanthus214 yes, that's the joke. Bodger only shows up as a cameo at the beginning, and Baelin only says the one thing, so in total, he only has about two lines
This was far and away better than 95% of Hollywood dreck. All of your work is simply amazing and so professional. I feel strongly that I must contribute to your continuing efforts. I may not have much, but this project is worthy.
Same though! The fisherman’s relationship with the girl was very well written. Those type dynamics you just don’t see anymore in all those big budget movies, which only care about barfing out the hot next take on wokeism.
The girl who plays Willow is wonderful! I felt afraid when she was afraid. She's so expressive and animated, and yet very gentle in her delivery. What a great actress.

This movie was a masterpiece that was under an hour long. You can rarely fit a good story, action, character building, and a climax in such a time but these guys did it. 10/10
I litterely cried in the ending. He was born to be a fisherman who is stuck in few words. I expected him to have a curse where he was a great hero of honey wood but got cursed. A very sad and happy ending
This was great. The choreography was very well done and so were the special effects. Acting was very good and the scenery is just amazing. You guys have really outdone yourselves with this.
This is pure art. I find it incredible how they managed to make an epic story with a 3 lines character as the main one. Acting. Music. Special effects. Scenery. Everything was perfect. I already liked what they did for all these years. Took them 9 years to come to that point, and I feel like it is the peak of their achievement. Congrats.
I hope you guys know I come back to this short film as often if not more than LOTR. As a comfort film to relax, background to sleep, killer set/prop/character everything that I can hone in on and find more detail. It means a lot to me and I think you guys should keep developing the world of Azerim/Skycraft into more and more and more. Huge love from Orlando, Florida.
Oh man, what an emotional roller coaster. That time when Baelin said "Mornin" i was on the edge of my seat and then later when he said "Nice day for fishin'"... I'll admit it, i cried a bit. Can't wait for the theatrical release.
Baelin kinda reminds me of Aranhir in WoW who is just a shop owner in Dalaran and for some reason he has the highest hp in the entire game, more so than end game bosses 😂
You know, this is the first time I actually pay attention to the end credits. In my mind all the Epic NPCman had always been, like, something homemade, small budget, with the main cast acting, one or two people for filming, one or two in charge of the costumes and SFX when needed and that was it. But seeing the incredible amount of people involved in this video really put in perspective how much these numbers skyrocket when you want quality, you need people for EVERYTHING, for every person in front of the camera there are several behind, tackling on hundreds of tasks we don’t even think about but are crucial for the movie to happen. I can’t imagine the amount of work and time and money that had to be put, I mean they had to hire props master, make up artists, stunt doubles, choreographer, SFX artists, editors, extras, all the many technicians needed for filming, many people to coordinate the whole bit, the food the drinks the driving the materials the props……. That must have been such an experience.
This is such a beautiful Movie, it really proves how good you can make a movie with well thought out Characters, beautiful Landscapes and genuine Emotions. It really makes you say: "Morning, nice day for fishing, aint it" :) :)
@@cherrydragon3120 Nah, sometimes time and effort won't help a performer getting the good result. There's a limit to a person's own ability and patience.

Baelin the badass. I love coming back and watching this occasionally. You made the NPC with almost no dialog and very little personality a larger than life character and not only is it hilarious it's awesome lol
In the beginning, I had constant goosebumps due to seeing to many characters these guys created, all in one scene. Even tho they're frequent on their channel, it's like seeing a cameo or a crossover.
"I dare not stray from the road" 😳 *chills* This was a masterpiece. You guys realize when(not if) you plan a sequel, the Kickstarter is going to be blown away by fans craving more, right?
Adding my voice to everyone saying that the production quality of this short film is higher than most Hollywood films with a fraction of their budget. Everything about this is a masterpiece. I applaud the whole VLDL team and everyone who helped make this possible. I hope you all make many more videos like these, and I would definitely support you all if you do feature-length films that get shown in theaters as well. Seriously, this and all of your other videos as well are all so amazing, I just can't say enough good things. Please never stop making videos!! ❤❤❤❤
This really makes you appreciate Rowan as an actor. “Here’s your one line, now go convey a bunch of emotions with it”. Loved it, well done to all involved 👍👍
I'm completely blown away. This was a professional level production. VLDL should be recognized as a quality studio around the world from this point forward. You guys have just set a very high benchmark for creators on every platform. I think you could attract other high fanbase creators for collaborations that would propel you to inspirational heights.
@@Jinn174 production studios have spent millions and come up with worse production value. It's not all about the cash thrown at it, it takes a ton of raw talent.

Fan theory: Baelin was actually programmed as an elite warrior NPC intended to be a recruitable companion for the player but, during testing, he was found to be so overpowered that he was game-breaking, which led to him being hastily re-skinned as a fisherman. The rush to edit his character meant he was only given a few dialogue options which is why he can only speak his catchphrases. The experiences he goes through here are causing his original character to resurface as his programming tries to adapt to the situation.

That also explains his limited dialogue options!
Some NPC are marked as "essential". Baelin in marked as "critical".
I love that this started as a joke. Then, y'all delivered an absolute masterpiece.
Baelin's kind of pushy when he's walking in town isn't he?

"I dare not stray from the road" 😳 *chills* This was a masterpiece. You guys realize when(not if) you plan a sequel, the Kickstarter is going to be blown away by fans craving more, right?
And her real name is Phoenix Cross...cool name i should say
I definitely join on this kickstarter if there is a sequel. unable to join last time cause am still studying.. but now im working!
That scene sent the chill down my spine. The torment and fear of an NPC who have no choice but to act as scripted. Soooo good acting!

They spent half a million making this that is why it is looks so good
@@Jinn174 money well spent, IMO.
@@Jinn174 production studios have spent millions and come up with worse production value. It's not all about the cash thrown at it, it takes a ton of raw talent.
@@Jinn174 It's not just this though. Have you seen the costume and production value in their PUBG series? Or the kind of cinematography, costumes and camera work in their dark souls series? All of their production value is honestly mind boggling considering they're just a meme channel that makes skits. VLDL is a perfect exemplification of quality content, and other content creators should really consider taking a page out of their book.
@@Arukayos to add to that even the D&D acted out bits are a real pleasure to watch too.
They're just brilliant 😅
Stumbled into this while doing the whole ‘watch-a-flick-and-mess-around-on-your-phone’ and ended up with the movie on pause and full attention to my phone. Well done!!!
Great job. I love how you were able to turn a background “NPC” character with a single line of dialogue into a charming story of its own.
my favorite part is that baelin dosent want to move

This was EPIC!!!. The emotions that came from two lines was amazing. By the end, I had tears rolling down my face. Superb acting by all and the landscape was stunning!
That's a theory I can get behind
an elite warrior NPC with a legendary lance as his main weapon, i believe
A GAME THEORY!!
or what if baelin has a back story where he was a warrior and gave that up to be a calm fisher man
Or Baelin was created by copying and then editing the files of an elite warrior NPC. Things like that often happen.
Remember when RUclips was nothing but grainy old video clips? It’s crazy that’s where we started and this is where we are now. I’m very impressed
Some of the older clips are still legendary and better than some content from youtubers who just want money and clickbait people.
The old RUclips was better objectively, less ads, less shadow banning, less sellouts, more revenue. Oh yeah and not owned by google.
I think ur forgetting RUclips kids
