Love the lyrics and Skynyrd wrote it (Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington) after Ronnie's grandmother passed away, so it will always be their version for me because it was so very personal for them.

My brother-in-law passed away 10 days ago, this was his favorite song and we played it on a loop along with a few of his other favorites. Without going into great detail, he had a massive stroke at the age of 32 (two years ago) and passed away at 34 in a tragic car accident. Never take your life for granted guys, make sure you tell people you love them everyday and hold your little ones tight with every hug. You NEVER know what tomorrow will bring. Thank you for doing this song tonight MRM. RIP Kris.

Well, Blake, many have improved on hendix’s Songs, but much of what he did was cover songs. SRV improved on hendrix’s Stuff, but the original is still the original. Like trying to improve on nature, it’s never quite the same recreated. Hell, being a musician for almost 50 years, I myself have improved many of his songs, and covers, but there’s only one one Jimi, and his sound was his sound, as is mine. Do you get it now ?

The Original is always the best Lynard Skynard. I don't understand why people do covers can't they come up with their on music. ‎Ronnie Van Zant‎; ‎Gary Rossington
wrote the song. The way Shinedown sings it takes away from the message it's called Simple Man for a reason not bells and whistles man. My Opinion

Being a typical teenager, I ignored the words and became a very materialistic young man. My father passed away when I was 24. Although it took some years, his words finally sank in. I'm now 43 and living a life that I hopes makes my father proud. A life of a simple man.

I saw Lynard Skynyrd last year in concert and it was the BEST feeling ever to hear this song Live . I've always told my son ever since he was a teenager that I dedicate this song to him. So now everytime he hears this song he thinks of me 💕 . I've heard all versions of this song before and Shinedown does do a good job covering it but hearing it performed Live by Lynard Skynyrd definitely is something I'll never forget 🤘 here's a small clip from when I saw them perform it in 2018
    ruclips.net/video/y7VBcnASjEY/видео.html
I had to come edit because I had to say the Original would be with singer Ronnie Van Zant he died in '77 and then his brother Johnny Van Zant took his spot singing for Lynard Skynyrd. Definitely a great Documentary to watch on Netflix.

This is what I have wanted for my son since before he was born and he is 38, soon to be 39 and he is a responsible, loving, caring, good, fine gentleman and has lived by everything expressed in this song... Proud and very happy mom especially since I survived terminal cancer that I was diagnosed with when he was just 26... I was blessed to see him get married last November and see him grow into a Simple Kind of Man...
You are right, everyone should dedicate these words to their sons and guide them to be a Simple Man...

Thank you very much for posting this - a great classic that Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote back in 1973 based on a true story about the singer Ronnie Van Zant getting wisdom from his grandmother, and guitarist ( one of three guitarists in the band at that time ), Gary Rossington getting wisdom from his mom. Thanks again, and God bless.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s is the original and the best, in my opinion, because it’s their song - they wrote it. And I adore all the original Skynyrd songs. They were such a great group and the story of how they came together and eventually became famous gives reason to feel it was meant to be.

  • @gregkleinfall1901
    @gregkleinfall1901 5 лет назад +12

I think the real issue can come down to when you first hear a rendition of song. Once you listen to a song that speaks to you, it leaves an indelible mark imprinted on your brain. When anyone else performs the song, you immediately compare it to the original and the way you feel about the song isn't going to be quite the same.
Since I am older and have heard many covers of some of my favorite songs and many of them very well done, I still can't enjoy them as much as the originals. A good example would be when Disturbed performed The Sound of Silence. I thought it was a very good rendition, but Simon and Garfunkel's version took me back to a time when I was young and their music was playing in my truck when I first met my wife. A cover just can't do that. I think we often have those types of sentiments attached to the songs we love. Covers, even though they may musically be considered superior, cannot supplant the original in our minds.
I think a similar effect is true for the younger crowd when they hear a cover first that they really like. When they discover the original, it's likely that they will prefer the cover since the original will sound so much different than the song they have an attachment to.

Man, every Friday and Saturday night in high school we'd be rocking Lynard Skynard, there was something truly magic about them. I'm so old school you couldn't get me to ever say anyone did it better than Ronnie Van Zant, but hey you are from a different generation and if you were there and you lived in those days, when you hear his voice you are taken right back to those days. It's just a magic song that has meaning for generations and if I'd have heard Shinedown sing it first I guess I'd feel different. But to my 51 year old ears these guys sound like heaven to me.

This song brings back so many memories. I can almost smell the grill with hamburger patties cooking, the smell of the salty ocean air, and the howling winds of a CAT 2
    hurricane in my garage lol
    Great times 🌀

I love this song. I only have a daughter, but she also loves this song and plans to instill these values in her son as he grows up. I listened to Shinedown - great version of this song! I look forward to hearing more of their music. I still love this one, though. Blessings all!!!! 💜💜

MRM Skynard sings it with their heart and soul because they wrote it with heart and soul. Maybe that's why I love it so much.

Still remember the plane crash that silenced and changed forever the band only five years after recording Simple Man. On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray all died as a result of the crash; 20 others survived.

The story behind this there producer Tom Dowd did not want them to record this song he said it wasnt right for them . Ronnie took him by the arm put him in his car and said we'll call you when its cut. No one but Ronnie could ever do that to a producer without gettin dropped by the label. But Ronnie was Lynyryd Skynyrd .

Amen to having your child listen to these words and feel what is truly meant by them. Skynyrd may have been a group of country boys but they knew music and wrote some real deep and meaningful lyrics. You can't go wrong with LS.

Omg. The minute you said this is a parents song to their kids almost knocked me off my chair. As I was listening to this I was thinking I should forward this song to my 3 kids. ☺️ They’re all out of the nest yet so what. Even though they know they’re my best accomplishments, doesn’t hurt to reinforce my point. 😇

I went and listened to Shinedown sing the song. To be honest knowing the Vanzants and their love of family and God makes the song more than the music and words. Listening to Johnny sing the song and the look in his eyes is like listening to a very personal reflection of his family and band family. There is love in the song more that just the music.

the singer from Shinedown is the son in law to the singer from Lynyrd Skynyrd.....
Shinedown think of the Southern rock legends as more like family. In fact, if Ronnie Van Zant were alive today, Shinedown guitarist Jasin Todd's 3-year-old daughter would call him Gramps. The rocker is engaged to Van Zant's daughter, Melody, and the two will marry in October.Apr 26, 2004

I was played this song at my Cub Scouts cross over to the Boy Scouts. Parents had their chance its time for the boys to choose the path, but remember now the parents are out of the picture, there is someone up above to lead them on the path to be a simple man.
