Leonard Skinner was a high school gym teacher that was pretty tough and strict especially when it came to long hair on boys. The school had a rule: no long hairs. The band members went to that school and eventually after several run ins Skinner had them kicked out of school. In retaliation and as a joke the band named themselves after Skinner. They changed the spelling around to avoid any legal issues. As a result the militant gym teacher became very famous and eventually became good friends with the band.

"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"
"Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"
"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand

One song and she's hooked! Ronnie Van Zant was a once in a lifetime songwriter, singer and band leader.
You want some fun and funk, listen to their "Swamp Music". For grit in a song, "That Smell", "Saturday Night Special". You'll hear the magic that was my high school years.

Btw, I just listened to a Zep song and realized you would love it. It's called Fool in the Rain. It has the best drum groove (called a Purdie Shuffle, look it up). I guarantee you'll love it. It's from their last album.

You are cool for at least giving them a listen. I was a huge fan, I had all their original albums, I saw them twice when I lived in San Jose California, I played guitar in bands I wanted to be just like them and creedence Clearwater and the stones. You are so cool to give them an honest listen.

Hello! So, I just now stumbled onto this genre of young Black Americans checking out the music of my high-schools days (early 1970s). What an eye-opener! I had no idea this kind of cultural sharing was going on. I must say: Y'all are VERY open-minded and VERY fair. I guess this comes from a sort of "battle" or "throw down" mindset, meaning that the attitude is "bring it." If the music is good, it is good. Color don't matter. Much respect and appreciation for that.
I would also want to say that some of your male counterparts weren't able to listen to Free Bird all the way through. At some point the guitars were too much for them. They ripped the headphones off their head, got out of their chairs, and had to walk around the room a few times before they could get back in the chair. It smoked their brains. But not you. You rode that whole monster wave, and you didn't miss a note. Girl, you are deep. Actually, there is a better version of this song where toward the end they build to a final crescendo and then come crashing down in a climatic release and hard resolution. There is a live version of that on RUclips (1977 in Oakland). The ending here is a fade out (not as good).
You are a charismatic, sexy, and soulful performer. I have a couple of other songs for you and I would love to see what you think of these. The first is Blue Sky (1972), from the Allman Brothers Band. This was the other great southern rock band of the time. Lynyrd Skynyrd was pretty much my top band back in my day, but they do have a rough edge. The Allman brothers could be just as nasty if they wanted to be, but this piece is softer and lighter, like a bubbling brook on a cool spring morning. The other one is Sugar Magnolia from the Grateful Dead (also 1972). This one is softer still. A sort of unique combination of 1960s psychedelic San Francisco and old fashioned American hill music.
In high-school, we listened to two kinds of music: either rock on one side, or disco and soul on the other side. Thank you for checking out the music of my youth, getting into it, and building bridges between people!
I'm not much on social media, so I hope these links to Blue Sky and Sugar Magnolia work.

In 1977 America lost one of the most influential bands of all time (Lynyrd Skynyrd) the band lost lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines (does one hell of a guitar riff in Free Bird) back up singer Cassie Gaines and their road manager.
