"Tuesday's Gone" is one of the best songs ever written. Metallica did a very decent cover, but it doesn't touch the original. Both versions are worth a listen, but Skynyrd's version (the album version) is never going to be topped by anyone.
The last surviving founder of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary just past away. He was the one that survived the plane crash that killed band mates. Great band and songs. I enjoy your honest and touching reactions. God Bless!

@@hk45c62Yes, Gary did survive as well, but he was the last founding member until his passing on March 5th 2023. Bob Burns was the drummer originally. Love Artimus as well though and he is a phenomenal drummer. He replaced Burns in 74.
I’m from Jacksonville Florida the home of Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were Simple Men. The Ronnie Vanzant memorial park is about 5 miles from my house. It has a fishing pond, kids playground, tennis courts and basketball courts. The rebel flag means the rest of the country thought poorly of the south and we were not going to be held down. We have a great love of family, we work hard, we’re independent And rely on ourselves, we’re good neighbors. Be proud you’re from the South.
My best friend used to play the song for her sons. She tells them remember this, this is all you need to know. When her youngest got married, unbeknownst to her, he had this playing for the groom/mother of the groom dance. She cried the whole time. It was beautiful!!!! 🥲🥰🥰
Born and raised in NY and lived in NC for 11 years. Southerners are proud people and the Rebel flag is not viewed as a negative symbol by most. It reflects a passion for living a simple easy going lifestyle. Work hard and play hard. Hunting, fishing, off-roading in the dirt, drinking at a BBQ, NASCAR!!! My only child, a son, played this for me before heading off for boot camp. He explained to me that this describes exactly what I told him again and again. He had just found the song. I had known it for decades. To be selfless, humble, kind, and love God is how I was raised. I just passed it down. It was so fulfilling to have my son recognize it in this song. “Simple Man” was written by band members Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington. Van Zant’s grandmother and Rossington’s mother passed away around the same time, so the two got together at Van Zant’s apartment to share memories of them. As they talked, the stories they passed back and forth suddenly began to form into a song.
I grew up in the 60s and 70s. The rebel flag for my generation had nothing to do with hate. I was part of the generation that was the first generation to attend integrated schools. The rebel flag for many of us was all about being proud of being a southerner. We were criticized and put down for being a part of something we were not a part of like the civil war and the hate groups of the times. We were called dumb, racist and the products of incest. I was in the deep south and in rural community. We had zero problems when integration came to our schools. None, nada, zip. We kids got along great. Played sports together and respected each other. There were bumps here and there. But minor ones at that. We figured out things one day at a time. And ultimately we figured out we were the same under the veneer of how God made us.
I also grew up in the South, but in the 70’s and 80’s. I had a slightly different experience. The racism was sometimes in your face and sometimes covert. I was surrounded by it. When I go back to my hometown now, it’s still there. Everywhere. And the people with those flags tend to be the worst ones. It’s amazing what people will say when they assume you think like them because you look like them.
I’m just always amused when people from other parts of the world tell us southerners what that flag means to us. I decided that people just like to bitch.
The day the music died, in my opinion. On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi, United States. Chartered by the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from L & J Company of Addison, Texas, it was flying from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, crashing near its destination.[3][4] Lynyrd Skynyrd lead vocalist and founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, Captain Walter McCreary and First Officer William John Gray all died as a result of the crash, while twenty others survived.[5] The tragedy abruptly halted Lynyrd Skynyrd's career until Van Zant's brother Johnny reformed the band ten years later.
They crashed between Magnolia, and Gillsburg, Mississippi. There is a memorial near the crash site. It was done with all donations, it's really something to see. They were trying to get to the small airport in Fernwood, MS. They crashed 15 miles or so out. I'm from here, that's why I can get specific.
My parents were Skynyrd fans so I grew up listening to them & loving their music. I wasn’t born until after this tragedy but I’m grateful to Johnny & the rest for giving millions of people, including myself, the opportunity to experience their incredible music live. ❤️
I’m happy I watched all the way through before I commented. I will say that my grandmother would teach me things when it was raining and we couldn’t work outside around the farm. Grandma was a great force multiplier to my grandfather. They both worked hard in their own ways. She would talk as we worked and she said this in her own words, to find what I liked to do and be good at it, learn it and protect it. Most of my friends went to summer camp, I when to grandma and grandpa‘s farm all summer. Thanks for sharing.

This goes on all the "Southern Rock" and "Classic Rock" playlists! The rebel flag just means we do what we want and we believe in freedom, independence, responsibility and taking care of each other. It means there's gonna be good music, tasty food, moonshine and cool people at the party that probably have black kids or grandkids and in reality are pretty cool with everybody...y'all it's 2024...it means we are OUTLAWS...not racists. Most of us...and we distance ourselves from the troublemakers.
I am hoping you wouldn't need that flag any longer..or perhaps design a new one, that flag is not a good symbol. I believe you are who you say you are and you don't need that flag... IMO
I'm a northern man from rural PA, but I sympathize with the true meaning behind the rebel flag as we in the "sticks and boonies" as they call it, have the same sentiment. In today's social clime where any decent and respectable culture is being suppressed and demonized, I have far more respect for those that still rock the rebel flag than those that demand they conform. Always found it strange that those that cry for diversity are also the same that won't be satisfied till all the crayons in the box are the same color. So much for live and let live.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's first LP came out in August 1973 and I was hooked on their music. The song Simple Man is one of my favorite and I have been listening to that song for over fifty years. Every time I listen it still brings tears to my eyes.
This song always makes me reminisce about my my son Reggie. He passed 2 yrs ago at age 53. Very hard to get along with at times when drinking. But a true heart of gold. I'm still awestruck at times that he was a part of my life for 53 years . I'm 72 and pray I'll see him again one day
My grandpa was from Appalachia and every time I hear this song I cry, it just reminds me of the WAY that he was and the advice he would give me. Life is complicated enough, don’t go looking to over complicate it.

Anything such as anger, loss, pain, euphoria, dance, love, laugh and every emotion a person has. If you say that Skynyrd has made you love every single song then you are a lucky man. I have been a musician for over 40 yrs (mostly guitar) and I have yet to find any band that wrote only great songs and no "so, so" tracks. Actuially that would make them a bit boring after a while. Remember this too son, as you age you begin to appreciate some stuff you would have never touch in your 20`s. You are young. Your hardline stance on LS is admirable, yet stubborn as all hell. I had bands that could "do no wrong" and blast every other bands doors out. This will happen to you as well.
Seeing them live in 1977 was the greatest thing i had ever been a part of . Being 67 this band has been with me for life and ill carry them to my grave . Once you go down this rabbit hole it changes you immensely so be amazed at this bands talent . One more thing Ronnie never wrote down a song on paper ever how many singers do you know who can do that .

I knew you would love this song. Hearing Ronnie Van Zant sing these lyrics is just one of the best things in music. A deep philosophy wrapped in the most accessible form. Life brings complicated challenges, but the most important things in life are very simple.

Stumbled onto your channel this evening. 'Simple Man' is a profound song for me (coming as it did) at a major crossroad in my life. My Mother was very sick while I was in High School (due to kidney failure). She struggled for several years and got progressively worse as time marched on (My Father had died unexpectedly in 1976 when I was just 12). New Years Eve, 1980: I was home alone with her as the rest of my brothers and sisters all went out to celebrate the coming New Year. We were in the kitchen while she made some Tea. She filled her cup with hot water and, looking down at the counter, softly said out loud to me "This (coming) Year just has to be Better'. She was rushed to the Hospital on February 23. On February 25, 1981 she died while still in the Hospital as Doctors tried to save her. We all found out what happened when my Grandparents, Aunt and Cousin showed up at 6:30 AM to our house when we were all just getting up to go to school. My Cousin was a loud mouthed brat, but on that day, I watched him walk into the living room and sit down without uttering a word. I knew right then what had happened before anyone had said anything :( I had lost both my parents before I even graduated High School. Something snapped in me right then and I told the world to FUCK OFF right there! I NEVER wanted to go through that kind of pain ever again! 'Simple Man' was the one song I played the most as I grieved. To say I was just totally lost is an understatement. It took me years to come to terms with what happened (One NEVER 'gets over it'- You just make your peace and carry on as best as you can). Today, my wife and I have two adopted boys from China with Special Needs. The first one graduated High School in June. His brother is due to follow June 2025. In 2017, I was working at my shop late one night. I stopped work and earnestly prayed to God with a proposal, saying, 'Let me live long enough to see both of my sons graduate from High School, something my parents could not give me. In Exchange: When my second son graduates, You can tap me on the shoulder that very night and say 'Come With Me, it's time to go'. I won't argue, put up any fuss or try to back out of my deal. I'll simply rise to my feet and say 'OK'. And that will be that. Will He accept my offer? I'll find out June of 2025- Stay Tuned!

This was their first album and they had a well-known producer. The producer didn't want this song on the album. Ronnie led him from the studio to his car and told him they would let him know when they were done recording it. Ronnie could be a scary dude ... especially when he was drunk.
I grew up with Skynyrd playing in the house. My dad had this goofy ass little shuffle dance he'd always do to 'Gimme Three Steps' that I still smile over the thought of when the song plays. This song always reminds me of how my Mom raised me. She never pushed me into any certain direction and was content just to see me satisfied doing something I enjoyed. Everyone has their favorite picks for you to react to, so I won't toss another on the pile. It's your journey and I just enjoy getting to tag along and watch you take it.
The guy on the far right (Ed King) had just joined the band and still felt like an outsider. He was a California dude and the rest of the band was from Jacksonville, FL which is practically South Georgia. In 1967 he had already been on a number one hit (Incense & Peppermints) with another band called Strawberry Alarm Clock. The band had taken numerous shots in this position for the album cover and on the very last shot, lightning struck right behind Ed's head and they used it. Moments after this final shot was taken, one of the other band members threw up. I think it was from drinking too much.
@@joewiley62he didn't say Steve Gaines, he said Ed King and he is right about Ed King. This song and first album was recorded long before Steve Gaines even joined Lynyrd Skynyd. Steve Gaines replaced Ed King after King left the band after a disagreement with Ronnie Van Zandt, who was a mean drunk, after Ronnie almost broke the fingers of Kings right hand becuase Ronnie was very drunk and said King had been playing bad after a concert one night. King also did not like the bands habit of after a concert getting drunk and starting bar room fights .

I'm glad I played this for my only son, whenever we heard it after that we'd look at each other and smile, then turn it up. I miss him so much, it's been almost 3 years since he passed.. I'll never be the same and miss him daily. TY Black Pegasus for doing it .
We're playing this at my brother in law's funeral next weekend. Last year he asked me to please remember to play it for everyone, while we were at his granddaughter's bday party. He knew his time was coming soon to be called home. I found your channel while helping my niece look for songs for his memorial. Its kinda helped with the grieving process. We also had my step-dad's friend's band play it at his funeral. Along with Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying. If you sit and think about your mom passing and listen to this by yourself, its just good for the soul.

Always remember there is a reason why a specific song is covered. The original deserves a listen just because it was covered. Lynyrd Skynyrd was my mom & dad’s favorite band and I grew up on their music. I remember seeing my dad crying when the plane went down and he wasn’t a cryer. The whole family saw them live when I was 12 and my sister 8. The smell of weed everywhere and us two kids front and center with people gawking at us because we knew every word to every song. One of the best memories of my childhood.

For a newer generation I don't remember attending a wedding where this was not the song a morher and her son dance to at his wedding (if mom was a 60-70's kids). It's up there with "Stealing Cinderella" by Chuck Whicks and the father daughter dance.

I played this for my son years ago. He’s thirty eight and found out in March that he has kidney cancer. He has three young daughters…the youngest is seven months old. The simple things in life truly are what matters most! God, family, freedom and heath. Money is necessary but we can’t take it with us when we leave this world. I’m so proud of my son. He works hard when he’s able and is an amazing father! This is an iconic song! As far as the rebel flag goes…I grew up in a very small town in southern Missouri in the 60’s-70’s. I didn’t have a rebel flag but saw them a lot. At that time it symbolized being proud to be from the south and live the small town “country” life. I realize now that was naive. That being said, there was no ill intention.

I have seen Skynyrd many times. Not one bad concert. A lot of people call them a cover band. But they are out there keeping Ronnie Van Zant ‘s and all the others that a passed memories alive.

I’m from Jacksonville Florida the home of Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were Simple Men. The Ronnie Vanzant memorial park is about 5 miles from my house. It has a fishing pond, kids playground, tennis courts and basketball courts. The rebel flag means the rest of the country thought poorly of the south and we were not going to be held down. We have a great love of family, we work hard, we’re independent And rely on ourselves, we’re good neighbors. Be proud you’re from the South.

Born and raised in NY and lived in NC for 11 years. Southerners are proud people and the Rebel flag is not viewed as a negative symbol by most. It reflects a passion for living a simple easy going lifestyle. Work hard and play hard. Hunting, fishing, off-roading in the dirt, drinking at a BBQ, NASCAR!!! “Simple Man” was written by band members Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington. Van Zant’s grandmother and Rossington’s mother passed away around the same time, so the two got together at Van Zant’s apartment to share memories of them. As they talked, the stories they passed back and forth suddenly began to form into a song.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s. The rebel flag for my generation had nothing to do with hate. I was part of the generation that was the first generation to attend integrated schools. The rebel flag for many of us was all about being proud of being a southerner. We were criticized and put down for being a part of something we were not a part of like the civil war and the hate groups of the times. We were called dumb, racist and the products of incest. I was in the deep south and in rural community. We had zero problems when integration came to our schools. None, nada, zip. We kids got along great. Played sports together and respected each other. There were bumps here and there. But minor ones at that. We figured out things one day at a time. And ultimately we figured out we were the same under the veneer of how God made us.
I also grew up in the South, but in the 70’s and 80’s. I had a slightly different experience. The racism was sometimes in your face and sometimes covert. I was surrounded by it. When I go back to my hometown now, it’s still there. Everywhere. And the people with those flags tend to be the worst ones. It’s amazing what people will say when they assume you think like them because you look like them.

On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi, United States. Chartered by the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from L & J Company of Addison, Texas, it was flying from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, crashing near its destination.[3][4]
Lynyrd Skynyrd lead vocalist and founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, Captain Walter McCreary and First Officer William John Gray all died as a result of the crash, while twenty others survived.[5] The tragedy abruptly halted Lynyrd Skynyrd's career until Van Zant's brother Johnny reformed the band ten years later.
They crashed between Magnolia, and Gillsburg, Mississippi. There is a memorial near the crash site. It was done with all donations, it's really something to see. They were trying to get to the small airport in Fernwood, MS. They crashed 15 miles or so out. I'm from here, that's why I can get specific.
I had the great pleasure of seeing Lynard Skynard on August 25 of 1977 at the big A in California.
My parents were Skynyrd fans so I grew up listening to them & loving their music.

I’m happy I watched all the way through before I commented. I will say that my grandmother would teach me things when it was raining and we couldn’t work outside around the farm. Grandma was a great force multiplier to my grandfather. They both worked hard in their own ways. She would talk as we worked and she said this in her own words, to find what I liked to do and be good at it, learn it and protect it. Most of my friends went to summer camp, I when to grandma and grandpa‘s farm all summer. Thanks for sharing.

This goes on all the "Southern Rock" and "Classic Rock" playlists! The rebel flag just means we do what we want and we believe in freedom, independence, responsibility and taking care of each other. It means there's gonna be good music, tasty food, moonshine and cool people at the party that probably have black kids or grandkids and in reality are pretty cool with everybody...y'all it's 2024...it means we are OUTLAWS...not racists. Most of us...and we distance ourselves from the troublemakers.

I'm a northern man from rural PA, but I sympathize with the true meaning behind the rebel flag as we in the "sticks and boonies" as they call it, have the same sentiment. In today's social clime where any decent and respectable culture is being suppressed and demonized, I have far more respect for those that still rock the rebel flag than those that demand they conform. Always found it strange that those that cry for diversity are also the same that won't be satisfied till all the crayons in the box are the same color. So much for live and let live.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's first LP came out in August 1973 and I was hooked on their music. The song Simple Man is one of my favorite and I have been listening to that song for over fifty years. Every time I listen it still brings tears to my eyes.
This song always makes me reminisce about my my son Reggie. He passed 2 yrs ago at age 53. Very hard to get along with at times when drinking. But a true heart of gold. I'm still awestruck at times that he was a part of my life for 53 years . I'm 72 and pray I'll see him again one day

Anything such as anger, loss, pain, euphoria, dance, love, laugh and every emotion a person has. If you say that Skynyrd has made you love every single song then you are a lucky man. I have been a musician for over 40 yrs (mostly guitar) and I have yet to find any band that wrote only great songs and no "so, so" tracks. Actuially that would make them a bit boring after a while. Remember this too son, as you age you begin to appreciate some stuff you would have never touch in your 20`s. You are young. Your hardline stance on LS is admirable, yet stubborn as all hell. I had bands that could "do no wrong" and blast every other bands doors out. This will happen to you as well.

Stumbled onto your channel this evening. 'Simple Man' is a profound song for me (coming as it did) at a major crossroad in my life.
My Mother was very sick while I was in High School (due to kidney failure). She struggled for several years and got progressively worse as time marched on (My Father had died unexpectedly in 1976 when I was just 12). New Years Eve, 1980: I was home alone with her as the rest of my brothers and sisters all went out to celebrate the coming New Year. We were in the kitchen while she made some Tea. She filled her cup with hot water and, looking down at the counter, softly said out loud to me "This (coming) Year just has to be Better'. She was rushed to the Hospital on February 23. On February 25, 1981 she died while still in the Hospital as Doctors tried to save her. We all found out what happened when my Grandparents, Aunt and Cousin showed up at 6:30 AM to our house when we were all just getting up to go to school. My Cousin was a loud mouthed brat, but on that day, I watched him walk into the living room and sit down without uttering a word. I knew right then what had happened before anyone had said anything :(
I had lost both my parents before I even graduated High School. Something snapped in me right then and I told the world to FUCK OFF right there! I NEVER wanted to go through that kind of pain ever again! 'Simple Man' was the one song I played the most as I grieved. To say I was just totally lost is an understatement. It took me years to come to terms with what happened (One NEVER 'gets over it'- You just make your peace and carry on as best as you can).
Today, my wife and I have two adopted boys from China with Special Needs. The first one graduated High School in June. His brother is due to follow June 2025. In 2017, I was working at my shop late one night. I stopped work and earnestly prayed to God with a proposal, saying, 'Let me live long enough to see both of my sons graduate from High School, something my parents could not give me. In Exchange: When my second son graduates, You can tap me on the shoulder that very night and say 'Come With Me, it's time to go'. I won't argue, put up any fuss or try to back out of my deal. I'll simply rise to my feet and say 'OK'. And that will be that.

This was their first album and they had a well-known producer. The producer didn't want this song on the album. Ronnie led him from the studio to his car and told him they would let him know when they were done recording it. Ronnie could be a scary dude ... especially when he was drunk.

I grew up with Skynyrd playing in the house. My dad had this goofy ass little shuffle dance he'd always do to 'Gimme Three Steps' that I still smile over the thought of when the song plays. This song always reminds me of how my Mom raised me. She never pushed me into any certain direction and was content just to see me satisfied doing something I enjoyed.

The guy on the far right (Ed King) had just joined the band and still felt like an outsider. He was a California dude and the rest of the band was from Jacksonville, FL which is practically South Georgia. In 1967 he had already been on a number one hit (Incense & Peppermints) with another band called Strawberry Alarm Clock. The band had taken numerous shots in this position for the album cover and on the very last shot, lightning struck right behind Ed's head and they used it. Moments after this final shot was taken, one of the other band members threw up. I think it was from drinking too much.

Steve Gaines replaced Ed King after King left the band after a disagreement with Ronnie Van Zandt, who was a mean drunk, after Ronnie almost broke the fingers of Kings right hand becuase Ronnie was very drunk and said King had been playing bad after a concert one night.
King also did not like the bands habit of after a concert getting drunk and starting bar room fights .

I'm glad I played this for my only son, whenever we heard it after that we'd look at each other and smile, then turn it up. I miss him so much, it's been almost 3 years since he passed.. I'll never be the same and miss him daily. TY Black Pegasus for doing it .

We're playing this at my brother in law's funeral next weekend. Last year he asked me to please remember to play it for everyone, while we were at his granddaughter's bday party. He knew his time was coming soon to be called home. I found your channel while helping my niece look for songs for his memorial. Its kinda helped with the grieving process.
We also had my step-dad's friend's band play it at his funeral. Along with Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying. If you sit and think about your mom passing and listen to this by yourself, its just good for the soul.

Always remember there is a reason why a specific song is covered. The original deserves a listen just because it was covered. Lynyrd Skynyrd was my mom & dad’s favorite band and I grew up on their music. I remember seeing my dad crying when the plane went down and he wasn’t a cryer. The whole family saw them live when I was 12 and my sister 8. The smell of weed everywhere and us two kids front and center with people gawking at us because we knew every word to every song. One of the best memories of my childhood.
We played this at my baby brothers funeral because he loved this song and he was a very simple man who tried to help everyone.
The lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd was Ronnie van Zant. The connection between Shine down and Skynyrd is the lead singer for Shine down is married to Melody van Zant. Ronnie's daughter.

My mother was 88 yrs old whenever she passed away 4 yrs ago, one of her fav songs was, "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. ❤. She also loved Bob Seger.

For a newer generation I don't remember attending a wedding where this was not the song a morher and her son dance to at his wedding (if mom was a 60-70's kids). It's up there with "Stealing Cinderella" by Chuck Whicks and the father daughter dance.

I played this for my son years ago. He’s thirty eight and found out in March that he has kidney cancer. He has three young daughters…the youngest is seven months old. The simple things in life truly are what matters most! God, family, freedom and heath. Money is necessary but we can’t take it with us when we leave this world. I’m so proud of my son. He works hard when he’s able and is an amazing father! This is an iconic song! As far as the rebel flag goes…I grew up in a very small town in southern Missouri in the 60’s-70’s. I didn’t have a rebel flag but saw them a lot. At that time it symbolized being proud to be from the south and live the small town “country” life. I realize now that was naive. That being said, there was no ill intention.

I have seen Skynyrd many times. Not one bad concert. A lot of people call them a cover band. But they are out there keeping Ronnie Van Zant ‘s and all the others that a passed memories alive.

From the Johnny VanZant Band .The album is ''No more dirty deals''. Every time i listen to it it gives me goose bumps, and my eyes leak.
