I promise you will thank me big time it has the most POPULAR 🎸GUITOR RIFFS OF ALL TIME .Enjoy one of my fav songs from the 70s you will hear a fantastic rock song you may never ever 4 get in a looooong time
Apparently, "Gimme Three Steps" is based on a true story. As Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington tells it, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, who was about 18 at the time, used a fake ID to get in a bar while his younger bandmates Rossington and Allen Collins waited for him in a truck. Van Zant danced with a girl named Linda, whose boyfriend, who was not too happy about it, came up to Ronnie and reached for something in his boot. Figuring he was going for a gun, Van Zant told him: "If you're going to shoot me it's going to be in the ass or the elbows... just gimme a few steps and I'll be gone." He ran to the truck, and he, Rossington, and Collins wrote this song that night!
@@tangoindiamike9189 I've heard it was a .38 not the .44 in the song. Also heard Linda was dancing with him just to get under her man's skin. Also heard he walked out not ran.
That's an amazing song, one that is autobiographical is called "That Smell" written by Ronnie Van Zant and one of the guitarists Allen Collins, the inspiration for the song was the increasingly reckless indulgences of the band one evening when guitarist Gary Rossington (who just passed in Mar of 2023) crashed his car into a tree. "what's Your Name", "Saturday Night Special", and "You got That Right" are a few other popular songs by them. 40!
I second That Smell, which I consider their best, and Saturday Night Special, which comes in second for me. Great songs that show "write what you know".
@@suecook1326 when my dad got me into Skynyrd at about 8-9 years old, he had to explain that line to me. He was like, “if somebody was pointing a gun at you, what kind of water do you think would be falling on the floor?” I don’t remember what I said, but I understood right away when he said that. 😂
True story, it was a bar on the westside of Jacksonville Fl. I trodden the same streets as these guys growing up. I’m closer in age to Johnny Van Zant, the current lead singer than Ronnie Van Zant. Back in the 90’s I worked with a girl that had lived on the same street as the Van Zant’s growing up. She and Johnny were friends as kids so she knew all the details of these songs and the family.
By chance, is that girl's first name, Chrissy? I ask because my friend's wife grew up on the same street, just across from the Van Zant's house, which is now a bit of a museum, even has a historical placard in front of it. I got to meet the band and get autographs from everyone through her. They were a really cool and laid-back group of guys, and I had a great time meeting them!!&!
I started singing this while working with an older guy and stopped halfway through the song . He immediately told me I needed to finish the song like it wasn't right to leave it unfinished 😅
Skynyrd is one the best bands ever (before singer Ronnie Van Zant died). "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" is an absolute must. "Simple Man" is an eternal heart-punch. They really have so many great songs. If you haven't heard "Sweet Home Alabama" in your studio, you gotta check it out because the production is amazing.
This song is a hoot. I recommend Jim Croce who has two songs that have this as a theme, great storytelling too- Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown and You Don't Mess Around With Jim.
"I was cutting a rug down at a place called the Jug, with a girl named Linda Lou" The Jug was an actual bar in Jacksonville, Florida, that they used to frequent. I don't know if the storyline is true, but The Jug was a real place for them.
That Smell from their last album is epic. That Smell is based on a true story as well about Gary Rossington (guitarist) wrecking his car while drunk driving and almost dying.
Storytelling. This is why we wanted you to hear this one. After we saw your appreciation of stories told by Bob Segar, The Eagles, and Kenny Rogers, we knew you’d like this one too … especially the humorous delivery.
I highly recommend “Gimmie Back My Bullets”, “The Four Walls of Raiford”, “Mr. Banker”, “Georgia Peaches” in addition to the other songs recommended here.
Great reaction! The Ballad of Curtis Lowe and Workin' for MCA (record company) are 2 other great stories by Skynard. On a different note, if you have not seen Stevie Ray Vaughn "Look at Little Sister" live where he BREAKS A STRING, changes out guitars, and never misses a beat, its in the dictionary under "total professional"😉.
Ronnie is one of the most underrated song writers He could come up with lyrics that no one else would ever think of and This is another reason I think Skynyrd was the best rock band of all time You have not heard anything yet Wait till you hear Curtis Loew ,Cry for the bad man,Trust and Am I loosing again and Double Trouble
BP. Heads up about Lynyrd Skynyrd's name. Some of the band went to Robert E. Lee High School together. There was a male PE teacher at the high school named Leonard Skinner. He was a tough enforcer of short hair policy for male students. One of the band members quit high school because of Skinner's harassment. When choosing the name of the band it was decided that naming the band after the asshole would be their only revenge possible. Leonard became one of the most famous high school PE teachers in American history.
Like "Simple Man", "Tuesday's Gone" from their debut album Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd is another great "designed for lighters-in-the-air" type song.
My mama's name was Linda Lou, and us kids loved to tease her with this song when we were little, lol. Their song What's Your Name is another good song of theirs that talks about life on the road. Great reaction!! 😊
You have to do "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe", sooo soulful and touching and damn near brings a tear to my eye every time I listen. And the slide guitar (Do Bro) is beautiful! Alos MUST do Call Me The Breeze, if you think the guitar rocks, wait until you hear the piano solo! Yes, that's right a piano solo that ROCKS! I thinks its their most swing'in tune!
This is one of my faves that didn’t get as much play as some! Thanks for doing this one, I figured it would make you smile 😂Definitely do Sweet Home Alabama! It is the ringtone on my phone! Never get tired of Skynyrd!❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
This Album was one of those where every single song on it was a masterpiece. You could put it on listen to it all and never be disappointed with a single song. ❤❤❤
"Well the crowd cleared away And I began to pray And the water fell on the floor . . ." 😂🤣 Great lyrics! Your next Skynyrd song reaction should most definitely be to "Call Me The Breeze"
Yes this is based on a true event. The fact that Ronnie Van Zant loved to fight but with the gun part he told the guy "if you shoot me it will be in the a$$ or elbows" and turned around and left
Saw them in 76 opening for the Doobie Brothers, great show, T for Texas, Ballad of Curtis Loew a couple more good ones worth checking out. Great reaction
In the live version when the guitars break out after the first chorus Ronnie says “bring all my mules out here, kick em one time”. I always loved that line going into that guitar work.
One of my favorite Skynyrd songs... great "story" song. Such a same that Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocal), Steve Gaines (guitar) and Steve's older sister Cassie Gaines (background vocals) were killed in a plane crash in 1977 when the band was hitting it big. Gone way too soon. Love your reactions and appreciation of the music I grew up loving. Thanks to the best reactor out there!
Love the reaction man! I need you, gimme back my bullets, Curtis lowe, cry for the bad man! Soo many great songs for us to enjoy. Have a great one and keep doing your thing!
You’ve got to review Molly Hatchet. Flirtin’ With Disaster is a great one! Skynard, Molly Hatchet, Boston, Bad Company, Aerosmith…all are a part of my teenage years. Love them all!!!
Who doesn't love Lynyrd Skynyrd? One of the greatest bands of all time. Such talent, performances, energy, exceptional band. All of their music is fantastic! I would love to see your reaction to Hooked On A Feeling by a band called Blue Swede from Sweden, I think you'll really like it. It reminds me of a Joe Walsh type song, upbeat, random sounds, alot of instruments, the lead Singers voice is so great, love it!
So I was three when this song came out. My only other sibling was 16 at the time. I quickly learned ALL the words. This one is epic! Keep on Rocking! ☮️🎶✝️
"Tuesday's Gone" is a must hear. "Call Me the Breeze" was a song written by JJ Cale for Skynard and they took it to the house! Try it live because they ALWAYS killed it on stage!
One of the best concerts I ever went to was Lynyrd Skynyrd touring with Hank Williams Jr....the whole band and Hank were good friends and toured/played together at times.
For a great Skynyrd story telling song try Four Walls Of Raiford. I'm a huge Lynyrd Skynyrd fan and that is my favorite closely followed by All I Can Do Is Write About It. Mr Banker is another good choice. Keep doing your thing, I'm all in.
Several people have suggested The Ballad of Curtis Loew. I just wanted to amplify that suggestion. If Simple Man is your favorite LS song (so far), you’ll love Curtis Loew. It’s a beautiful, beautiful song. If Catfish John and Mr. Bo jangles had a baby, it would be Curtis Loew ❤️
Yep. Happened to Ronnie over on the west side. Another one based on real experiences that you must do is "That Smell". (Hard to argue with your order of favorites so far, since any order would work. : ) You're right about Sweet Home, too. The intro to "Sweet Home Alabama" is my ringtone.)
BP you need to react to the Rossington Collins band I’m Free Today. This was a band formed by Lynyrd Skynyrd survivors, they were not a huge hit but I loved some of their music and that track had the most Ronnie Van Zant story telling feel.
I was never a huge Skynyrd fan, even though they're from my hometown and played the homecoming dance for my high school when I was in 10th grade. "Sweet Home Alabama" is one of those songs that requires everybody to yell "Woooooo!" when it starts playing. You need to listen to it for that opening guitar riff, long before they get to the chorus! But the best part of the song, IMHO, is Billy's piano solo toward the end. You'll also enjoy the lyrics, which refer to "The Swampers" - the studio musicians in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where they recorded a few albums. If you haven't watched the documentary "Muscle Shoals" about that studio, you should; it's excellent! My favorite Skynyrd song was actually from their last album before the plane crash: "I Know a Little," featuring the guitar playing of its composer, Steve Gaines, who did not survive the crash. Another good one off that album is "You Got That Right." But this is a fun song, too. It's about an actual bar on the west side of Jacksonville called "The West Tavern" where the band used to go. The owners of the bar renamed it "The Jug" after this song. Another of their storytelling songs is "Curtis Lowe" that was supposedly based on a composite of people they had known in their youth. You do know about where they got their name, right? Nobody in the band was named Leonard. Google it.
Another great reaction bro. Lynyrd Skynyrd is my all time favourite band and any of their original songs are awesome. They don't have a bad song. I'm down for you reacting to all of 'em! 😂 Peace and love.

“Call me the breeze” and “Curtis Lowe” for sure. Totally different songs, both are perfect.
Call me the Breeze, believe it or not, is a great 2 stepping song.
Curtis Lowe...definitely!! Also, " I Need You"!!
I'll add Four walls of Raiford to the list
call me the breeze, legendary guitar work and keys solo.
Great reaction! Call Me The Breeze and That Smell are a must
You ain't heard nothing yet need to hear "Saturday night Special" "That Smell" "On the Hunt" the list goes on all BANGERS
Pronounced album is my favorite
Workin' for MCA and I Know a Little as well.
"That Smell," is another good story telling by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Lynyrd Skynyrd “The Ballad of Curtis Loew” ❤
Yesss this is another great!
THIS ONE HERE.
This is my favorite Skynyrd song…❤❤❤
yeah I love that one
My favorite!
"Tuesdays Gone With the Wind" is touching
do both lynyrd skynyrd and metallica
Tuesday Gone, live in 76 is awesome!

I can totally see this being a true story😅
I've heard it's a true story, but 'ol boy had a knife, not a gun. To spice it up, they wrote about his weapon being a gun.
Cool story

Ballad of Curtis Lowe is another fantastic one. Tells a great story like this one.
Curtis Lowe is the best 2:09
Definitely concur.
True Skynyrd!!
"Ballad of Curtis Loew" is a must!
Got to do Ballard of Curtis Loew
True story from lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt. He NEVER wrote down his lyrics. He said if lyrics can't be remembered they aren't worth singing.
My personal favorite!
Another great one is “That Smell “. It is based on some real life events of band members.
The smell of death surrounds you
Whiskey bottle, brand new car, oak tree you’re in my way….
One of my favorite Skynyrd songs is "What's Your Name" from their final album, Street Survivors'. It's loads of fun!
Lynyrd Skynyrd has a great line-up, and "Three Steps" is my favorite. My choice for the next deep dive is the autobiographical "That Smell."
Needle & The Spoon & Gimme Back My Bullets are 2 great Skynyrd songs that don't get much attention.
Oh wow..I haven't listened to that album in soooooo long.❤❤❤
Also Mr. banker and Am I right or wrong also cry for the bad man
There aren't any bad Lynyrd Skynyrd songs!
That Smell, What's Your Name is also 2 very good songs worth checking out.
In the last verse, he sang "The water fell on the floor" translates to he peed himself! More Skynyrd please. "That Smell" or "They Call Me The Breeze"

38 special lead singer is Ronnie Van Zant brother. I think Johnny Van Zant

This is real Southern Rock. Some old boys have lived this. Back in the day.
That Smell, give me back My bullets, Curtis loew, needle and the spoon are some more suggestions
In the live version when the guitars break out after the first chorus Ronnie says “bring all my mules out here, kick em one time”. I always loved that line going into that guitar work.
That Smell another great song to check out.

That Smell and Tuesday's Gone and Needle & A Spoon are great songs by them.

The Breeze, is another one. My dad was a southern quartet gospel singer/piano player. He loved the piano solo.

Call me the breeze! Its my favorite skynyrd song. Its got so much energy!
One of my top two Skynyrd songs ❤️❤️❤️
Great band. Seen them in concert several times. Always a great show
This is my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song. It has a story I see in my head when I hear it play.
