@John Harris The term 'Southern Rock' was a marketing ploy used by the record companies back then, especially after Skynyrd's first producer Al Kooper picked them for his 'Songs of the South' production project. It actually turned out to be a great idea to bring these types of bands to the music industry forefront. Ronnie Van Zant, Skynyrd's lead singer, is said to have not minded the moniker but considered they "were a rock and roll band who happened to be from the south." That being said, most of what you posted is true historically.

Since moving down here to central FL. 12 years ago, I've been lucky enough to have met and share a stage with a few of my 'so called southern rock' band hero's. I hope you understand I'm not disputing your stance, just a view from a musician who is a big fan of the music who is not from the south. Yes, Skynyrd does have a country swagger for sure. What they do is mix rock n' roll beats with country guitar scales. Very ingenious. They can do more with three or four chords than any band I've ever heard. That's my take on it anyway.

On This studio version, the backup singers were part of The Swampers at The Muscle Shoals, Alabama studio (which they reference in this song). They were studio singers. I know one of the was the famous Merry Clayton. After a while, they had three lady backup singers who toured with the, known as THE HONKETTES. LOL. Country music back then was way different than today. I was very little, but I remember what Country was like. Skynyrd was Rock/Southern Rock, which was a new genre or category. They, along with the Allman Brothers Band created that new sound. Skynyrd were so influential that their sound along with Rock has greatly influenced Country music of today.

Neil Young has a song called "Southern Man". That's what they're referring to. The guys in Lynryd Skynryd actually had a lot of respect for Neil Young so it was a playful dig, not anything malicious. Southern Rock is rock and country kinda fused together. I can't tell you what it is what we know it when we hear it.

They weren't defending racism, or even the institutions of the South that perpetuated it. Rather, I believe that Young's (somewhat vicious) stereotyping of those living in the South is what rankled them. The vibe I always got was, "Hey, that ain't all the South is about." And being a Southerner yourself, I imagine you can agree with that notion.

Muscle shoals Alabama is where they recorded their first album in 1969. The swampers were the in house musicians. The record company wouldn't pick it up and sign them. They ended up opening for The Who on a worldwide tour. They got signed after that and recorded a new album for MCA. This was on the 2nd album " Second Helping" as a tribute the studio and the Swampers. And yes there is alot of country, British invasion rock and blues influence. Cassie Gaines was killed in the 1977 plane crash that took the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, road manager Dean Kilpatrick, the two pilots, Walter McCreary and William Gray as well as Cassie's brother Steve Gaines who was one of the lead guitarists and a vocalist.
It's the rhythm that makes it rock. The lyrics to this song give a shout out to the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. They worked on recording sessions for Aretha Franklin, The Staples Singers, Paul Simon, Wilson Pickett, Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Rolling Stones. Lynyrd Skynard was about as Southern as you could get coming from Jacksonville Florida. The formed in 1964 and mostly played gigs across the state and throughout the south. Several band mates came and went and a few were added in 1973 they hit it big with their song Simple Man.
Southern rock, mellow down you get country rock, mellow more you have old country. Going up, you have the life of country simple life, mix in the delta blues, the more you mix the higher up.
Usually traditional country didn’t have drums or drums forward in the mix. They did have instrument breaks but were usually focused around the singer. Early country music used fiddle (violin), banjo, and mandolin as lead instruments with acoustic guitar and upright bass as the rhythm instruments. That progressed to electric guitar and pedal steel or lap guitar and nowadays is the same as rock in many respects. What Lynyrd Skynyrd played was termed “Southern Rock” for their long extended jams. Other groups were The Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, and more recently The Black Crowes.

@@dadmateryn8092 I-4 is kind of the dividing line... for lots of things. Culture, weather, etc..... Florida is not a cohesive state. North FL is different from South FL, the East coast is different from the West coast and all of it's different from the panhandle. It's a weird state. I'll probably miss it because I've lived here since I was 13 yrs old and my family's still here... but it's Alaska for me, baby.

Thanks for the Skynyrd reactions. They are considered southern rock, and to me that involves some blues, some country, lots of rock, a bit of soul, mix it up and add guitars and lots of drums. Some of their songs could be played on country stations today and fit in, but that says more about today's country than Skynyrd's music. To me it's about the music, the lyrics are good, but you could take away the lyrics and still have a really great instrumental song. As a lover of older country, the good ones there tell a story, they are all about the lyrics and the music is just to accompany those, take just the lyrics of a good country song and you've still got a good story. This is just my opinion. Rock music is first about the music, and the lyrics come second, for the most part. Thanks again.
At the time, blues based rock was very big. Lots of music out there was blues based. All those bands, who came from different environments, threw their own cultural influences into that blues pot, turned up the heat really high, and stirred and you got all kinds of stuff. Skynyrd mixed southern influences into their blues based rock. The Allman Brothers mixed jazz and southern influences into their blues based rock. Various other bands of the time (some of whom sort of subsequently fell down the memory hole) had a similar sort of mix of influences. Of course gospel influences also creep into a lot of southern blues based rock. That sort of thing continued well into the 90s. See something like The Black Crowes doing a song like Sometimes Salvation, or various other things on their debut album. It's a powerful mixture. Sort of ironically, if you want to talk about country based, it's a bunch of brits named The Rolling Stones who probably most popularly mixed really outright country elements into blues based rock. Songs like Angie and Wild Horses have strong country influences. A big distinctive part of their sound was the sound of the Fender Strat guitar, played loud, which has an amazing raspy, twangy, biting tone. And multiple guitars soloing together, which was also a common element of The Allman Brothers as well. It gives a distinctive sound since it's not something that's done a whole lot in rock music. There actually was no chorus. This original version had back up singers Merry Clayton and Clydie King who were former Raelettes. Later on, Ronnie would hire Leslie Hawkins, Debra Jo "Jo Jo" Billingsly, and Cassie Gaines known as the "Honkettes" to sing live and record "From The Road" and "Street Survivors". There were no other stringed instruments other than 3 awesome guitarists in Allen Collins, Ed King, and Gary Rossington. Ed wrote the music and Ronnie the Lyrics for Sweet Home on Ed's first day back on guitar after playing bass for a time during Leon's absence. With "Bullets" they only had the 2 guitar attack after Ed King left for which they replaced him with back up singer Cassie Gaines' younger brother Steve who was lightening in a bottle. His addition as a singer/songwriter and prolific guitarist took them to new heights and Ronnie knew it. If you liked this studio version of Sweet Home, pull up a live version around 76-77 with Steve Gaines. It's even better! As for the piano, that was Billy Powell. Billy actually started out as Leon Wilkeson's roadie until Leon had Ronnie listen to Billy play "Freebird" on piano. He became a member on the spot. He was an incredible talent as they all were. Ed King was the guitar player who came up with this song. Pretty funky too. What a cool riff and lyrics by Ronnie. Ed King was in the 60s band called the strawberry alarm clock before skynyrd. Great lead solo in this song and that piano.
The "banjo" you are referring to isn't a banjo , but instead , Ed King and his Fender Stratocaster . At the time when this song was recorded , the band lineup was ; Ronnie Van Zant - vocals Allen Cillins - guitar Ed King - guitar Gary Rossington - guitar Leon Wilkinson - bass Billy Powell - piano , keyboards Bob Burns - drums . By the day of the plane crash, Ed King and Bob Burns had been replaced by Artimus Pyle (drums) , and Steve Gaines (guitar) .
I like seeing new listeners react to classic rock music. We had great music (I believe) in the 60s - 90s. Some of the best music though came from the 70s. We (older folks) grew up with all this greatness. Where as the younger listeners who are just now finding all this wonderful music are falling just as hard for it as we did. It just shows how music can bring us all together. No matter our age, region, race, gender etc. If you have a pulse music can bring us all together There is music you listen to that I’ve probably never heard of that I’d enjoy and vise versa. As soon as the band wrote the song, they all knew it was a hit and would be their signature song. And kept in their back pocket, waiting to release it on the second album.
This band (whats left of it) is on their farewell tour you should go see them live in concert before they retire. Its not the original band . Ronnie Van Zant , Steve Gaines , Cassie Gaines, Allen Collins, Billy Powell, and Leon Wilkenson have all passed away. The only original member left is Gary Rossington . But his version of Skynyrd still rocks. Ronnies brother Johnny Van Zant is now the lead singer.
The biggest thing that makes Lynyrd Skynyrd not country but southern rock is the time they were around country music was far different back then truthfully that's the only difference
Yeah, blame your parents! My daughter was exposed to lots of rock, and I listened to all of her music. I'm 65 years young. This was when politics became a big deal with the youth of America. Late 60's and 70s. I think They had 3 guitarists not including the bass. It’s simply Southern Rock. Check out Allman Bros, “Whipping Post”. Another Southern Rock great.

The singers in the background were called 'The Honketts.' They were comprised of singers, Jojo Billingsley, Casey Gains, and Leslie Hawkins. Cassie Gaines was killed in the 1977 plane crash that took the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, road manager Dean Kilpatrick, the two pilots, Walter McCreary and William Gray as well as Cassie's brother Steve Gaines who was one of the lead guitarists and a vocalist.

In our southern music there is blues, some rock, some country. To me southern rock is top's. why can't we all enjoy the best music ever made.
It's the rhythm that makes it rock. The lyrics to this song give a shout out to the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. They worked on recording sessions for Aretha Franklin, The Staples Singers, Paul Simon, Wilson Pickett, Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Rolling Stones. Back in 2014 PBS aired an excellent documentary about the Muscle Shoals recording scene in the 1960's and 1970's. Lynyrd Skynard was about as Southern as you could get coming from Jacksonville Florida. The formed in 1964 and mostly played gigs across the state and throughout the south. Several band mates came and went and a few were added in 1973 they hit it big with their song Simple Man.

Southern rock, mellow down you get country rock, mellow more you have old country. Going up, you have the life of country simple life, mix in the delta blues, the more you mix the higher up.
Usually traditional country didn’t have drums or drums forward in the mix. They did have instrument breaks but were usually focused around the singer. Early country music used fiddle (violin), banjo, and mandolin as lead instruments with acoustic guitar and upright bass as the rhythm instruments. That progressed to electric guitar and pedal steel or lap guitar and nowadays is the same as rock in many respects. What Lynyrd Skynyrd played was termed “Southern Rock” for their long extended jams. Other groups were The Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, and more recently The Black Crowes.

@@dadmateryn8092 I-4 is kind of the dividing line... for lots of things. Culture, weather, etc..... Florida is not a cohesive state. North FL is different from South FL, the East coast is different from the West coast and all of it's different from the panhandle. It's a weird state. I'll probably miss it because I've lived here since I was 13 yrs old and my family's still here... but it's Alaska for me, baby.

Thanks for the Skynyrd reactions. They are considered southern rock, and to me that involves some blues, some country, lots of rock, a bit of soul, mix it up and add guitars and lots of drums. Some of their songs could be played on country stations today and fit in, but that says more about today's country than Skynyrd's music. To me it's about the music, the lyrics are good, but you could take away the lyrics and still have a really great instrumental song. As a lover of older country, the good ones there tell a story, they are all about the lyrics and the music is just to accompany those, take just the lyrics of a good country song and you've still got a good story. This is just my opinion. Rock music is first about the music, and the lyrics come second, for the most part. Thanks again.
They had some awesome back up singers. And always loved the multiple guitarists ...and the way they often played their solos in harmony.

At the time, blues based rock was very big. Lots of music out there was blues based. All those bands, who came from different environments, threw their own cultural influences into that blues pot, turned up the heat really high, and stirred and you got all kinds of stuff. Skynyrd mixed southern influences into their blues based rock. The Allman Brothers mixed jazz and southern influences into their blues based rock. Various other bands of the time (some of whom sort of subsequently fell down the memory hole) had a similar sort of mix of influences. Of course gospel influences also creep into a lot of southern blues based rock.
That sort of thing continued well into the 90s. See something like The Black Crowes doing a song like Sometimes Salvation, or various other things on their debut album. It's a powerful mixture.
Sort of ironically, if you want to talk about country based, it's a bunch of brits named The Rolling Stones who probably most popularly mixed really outright country elements into blues based rock. Songs like Angie and Wild Horses have strong country influences.
A big distinctive part of their sound was the sound of the Fender Strat guitar, played loud, which has an amazing raspy, twangy, biting tone. And multiple guitars soloing together, which was also a common element of The Allman Brothers as well. It gives a distinctive sound since it's not something that's done a whole lot in rock music.
Here's an interesting one for you to do, which sort of shows how really country based content can actually be almost prog rock-ish in a way.

Sweet home Alabama was the first skynyrd song I ever heard fell in love instantly
There actually was no chorus. This original version had back up singers Merry Clayton and Clydie King who were former Raelettes. Later on, Ronnie would hire Leslie Hawkins, Debra Jo "Jo Jo" Billingsly, and Cassie Gaines known as the "Honkettes" to sing live and record "From The Road" and "Street Survivors". There were no other stringed instruments other than 3 awesome guitarists in Allen Collins, Ed King, and Gary Rossington. Ed wrote the music and Ronnie the Lyrics for Sweet Home on Ed's first day back on guitar after playing bass for a time during Leon's absence. With "Bullets" they only had the 2 guitar attack after Ed King left for which they replaced him with back up singer Cassie Gaines' younger brother Steve who was lightening in a bottle. His addition as a singer/songwriter and prolific guitarist took them to new heights and Ronnie knew it. If you liked this studio version of Sweet Home, pull up a live version around 76-77 with Steve Gaines. It's even better! As for the piano, that was Billy Powell. Billy actually started out as Leon Wilkeson's roadie until Leon had Ronnie listen to Billy play "Freebird" on piano. He became a member on the spot. He was an incredible talent as they all were. Next song..."That Smell"
Some rock officianados (back in the day 70s-80s) referred to that style of rock as "Southern Fried Rock."

Ed King was the guitar player who came up with this song. Pretty funky too. What a cool riff and lyrics by Ronnie. Ed King was in the 60s band called the strawberry alarm clock before skynyrd. Great lead solo in this song and that piano.

I like seeing new listeners react to classic rock music. We had great music (I believe) in the 60s - 90s. Some of the best music though came from the 70s. We (older folks) grew up with all this greatness. Where as the younger listeners who are just now finding all this wonderful music are falling just as hard for it as we did.
It just shows how music can bring us all together. No matter our age, region, race, gender etc. If you have a pulse music can bring us all together

As soon as the band wrote the song, they all knew it was a hit and would be their signature song. And kept in their back pocket, waiting to release it on the second album.
This band (whats left of it) is on their farewell tour you should go see them live in concert before they retire. Its not the original band . Ronnie Van Zant , Steve Gaines , Cassie Gaines, Allen Collins, Billy Powell, and Leon Wilkenson have all passed away. The only original member left is Gary Rossington . But his version of Skynyrd still rocks. Ronnies brother Johnny Van Zant is now the lead singer.
The biggest thing that makes Lynyrd Skynyrd not country but southern rock is the time they were around country music was far different back then truthfully that's the only difference

Yeah, blame your parents! My daughter was exposed to lots of rock, and I listened to all of her music. I'm 65 years young. This was when politics became a big deal with the youth of America. Late 60's and 70s. I think They had 3 guitarists not including the bass. It’s simply Southern Rock. Check out Allman Bros, “Whipping Post”. Another Southern Rock great.
Hi SC, the Hawkettes were family, and traveled with the band, also, check out Neil Young's ALABAMA, then the lyrics in the beginning will make sense to you, their first 6 albums are legendary, also the album LEGEND, that was released later.
