they weren't laughing because of her race, gender, or religion - they were laughing at her inability to answer the questions asked; like' do you think a controlled immigration policy is needed?' Likewise she was asked 'Why call the riots Islamophobic, instead of racist?' but then cited burning hotels, which contain Christian, Hindu AND Muslim asylum seekers. Yes it looks horrific, especially as she was the only person of colour, but she was floundering like a fish on dry land! Happy to criticize Balls' article but unable to withstand even basic cross examination like 'tell me one daily mail headline relevant to this' - there will be dozens of front pages, likely hundreds of articles, but she hadn't made note of a single one

His line of ‘questioning’ to his wife was interesting. The focus on online-misinformation completely buries the lead. It’s a distraction for the following reason: Rioters were operating under the belief the murderer had been of Muslim faith. They were ready to blame and punish any Islamic or black or brown person. We know this because of what they have said and what they have done. If you fail to call this what it is (an irrational fear of Islam and race) then you are a problem.

I can't believe he said to the only woman of color that she attacked him and every other man in the room. Out of all the words, he chose to use "attack" even though he had been interrupting her non-stop. Both of them raised their voices at her because she was demanding that calling an attack on a mosque Islamophobic be acknowledged. If she weren't Muslim, these men wouldn't have laughed at her when he accused her of attacking every single person in the room. This is the most disgusting thing I have seen on TV.

how was it Islamophobic when Zarah cited Balls article, discussing worries about migration controls for mostly white, catholic, eastern european migrants post 2003? She then jumped to asylum seeker hotel attacks, housing people of varying faiths - She's conflating several different issues into the mosque attacks, (islamophobia, racism, legal migration & non-visa boat arrivals) which backs up Garraway's unanswered question, 'why call them Islamophobic, instead of racist?' . As for level headed, she was anything but - otherwise she'd not need asked 4 times about controlled migration. Then there's her inability to mentally separate asylum seekers, from those arriving with visas (as Mark discussed). She called out the daily mail for their front pages, but didn't have a single example prepared, from the dozens she said existed - was she expecting zero questioning from Balls, or the guy from the mail? Whoever prepared her for this failed - regardless of gender, race, or religion of the panellists
I live in Christchurch NZ where we had a far right attack on a mosque killing many people. Locked into my workplace watching armed police patrol outside unsure what they were facing, was horrifying. But my lasting memory which brought home to me the reality is of a few weeks later when I was running across to a neighbour to drop off a parcel. In front of me were 2 women. The older one in a hijab . As I ran they swung round. The younger woman stepped in front of her mother arms spread wide to protect her. The look of terror on their faces was startling. That is the lived experience of Muslims dismissed so easily. It’s not “racist” it’s Islamophobic and racist.
This teared me up. So sad 😢

The verbs Ed Balls wants to use with respect to immigration are 'control' and 'manage'. When things need to be controlled and managed we know they are potential problems. I think what Zara was saying is that it is worth to use this language because it feeds the attitudes which have led to the violence we have seen these last few days. There is an ideal rate of immigration and ideal forms of immigration but as well as that our immigration should and does respond to international situations and the needs of real people. These are things we can talk about without using language that makes a clear implication that immigration is a bad thing and immigrants are unwanted people. Something Ed Balls doesn't get at all because he has very little empathy.

@@timvella1817 I agree with Tony, and it's because we are increasingly creating a media/political caste with one narrative, when we should have a media that's critical of politicians. I think it should be made difficult for individuals to move from politics to media as well. I'm not sure how to achieve that- perhaps one of the answers is to make the media as a career more accessible to working class workers. At the moment it's a class- bound profession. If you're not from the privileged classes it's very hard to get in.
It is interesting that the fascists targeting the Muslim, largely south Asian community over the tragic stabbings of the little girls when:
1. The suspect isn't a Muslim
2. He isn't South Asian
3. He isn't an immigrant
