I've been running an 08 LR3 with HD for 3 years now, 1.5yrs in the midwest, and the rest in S. CA, and I gotta say it'll keep up with pretty much anything that isn't a Jeep Rubicon. I will tell you though, especially since you guys are running a tire over 31.5", BUY A LAND ROVER SPECIFIC FAULT-MATE! ..If you lose a height sensor (it happens..) or anything else malfunctions in the air suspension, your larger than stock tires will mean it'll stuff the tires into the wheel wells and basically immobilize the vehicle. With a fault-mate, you can reset things (these trucks use a can-bus system run on fiber optic... They can and will have sporadic faults, that just need cleared to be on your way) and even manually restore ride heights even with a failed sensor or 3. As far as OBD Fault-mates go, I find the best for the LR3/Disco 3 is the IID Gap tool. Optionally, it has bluetooth that allows it to be run from a smartphone app (works impressively well) plus, it'll allow you to ditch those Johnson Rods and go to standard ones. You can just program the suspension to set it's lift points higher if you want it higher via the app/Fault-mate.
@@pulpanochamaster My LR3 has been better over the last 3-ish years vs the 80 series I had before it. My 80 series suffered from hidden rust/water leakage issues not long after I bought it, mostly hidden under plastic covers and carpeting (something Land Rover has had a pretty good handle on for some time) so it suffered a lot of electrical issues as a result. Full tail light failure, HVAC failure, loss of speaker connections on the radio, repeated failed window regulator problems, usually when they were down (very annoying) door lock failure, EGR failure (4 times in 9 years) front inner axle seal failure (3 times in 9 years) and poor brakes. I looked at the 100 series as a replacement, but every one I looked at had started to rust in the same way, behind plastic panels, and just honestly felt dated, like it'd never made it out of the 90's. People always think of Toyota and think it's the best thing on the planet because they're supposedly reliable and will last forever. Well if you live in the desert, maybe.. But if you drive in varied locations all over the country, they rot. I've had friends who've run into ABS pump failure on the 100 series and it's cost thousands to replace, and does immobilize the car off road, since they need the pump for the ATRAC to work. Then there's ATRAC itself. It's just not very good. It spins the wheels a LOT before it starts to work and just seems to struggle too much. Basically you'd need aftermarket lockers. Newer ones are hopefully improved over the older ones in all categories but they're also just as full of electrics as any Land Rover, so any perceived benefit is null. Plus they still suffer from the same stupid seating design in the back. The 2 biggest benefits I've found are initial purchase price on the Land Rover (I could buy one, and lose it and buy another, and still be money ahead on the same year/miles Land Cruiser) and the versatility of the load bay in the back, with the LR3's fully flat load floor with seats folded, where Toyotas use flip forward seats in the middle (eats up load floor length) and the useless flip up to the side 3rd row which eats a ton of room. Luckily they remove, but on the LR3 I don't have to worry about that. With the IID tool I'm able to basically block off any malfunctioning computer components, should I run into any (none so far in 60k+ miles) or in case of suspension malfunction, I can manually set the height on the car and shut the system down (very rarely if ever will you get airbag failure, it's 99.9% of the time it's a height sensor.) Mine's been all over the place even on trails usually traveled by dedicated built off road jeeps n' such, and despite being slower than something that's been modified, it seems to always figure out any traction issues and pulls through faultlessly. I had initially worried about CV axle strength and such, but I've found it can take one hell of a beating and I've yet to have much issue, besides tearing a CV boot open once when a stick got lodged in there. Had I stopped to check, it'd probably have been fine, but I didn't.. so it tore. Pulled the axle out, repacked new grease and re-booted the CV, and it's been fine ever since. Is it perfect? No. But it's a hell of a lot of 4wd for the price (used.. of course) and I've found the bonus being, not having to have a 2nd car for on the road journeys like I have with my past 4wd's, since the LR3/4 is shockingly composed on road for being so capable off road.
Due to your reviews, I ALMOST purchased a Touareg as a family (wife and I) off roader/overlander but the one I wanted was sold to a guy who also watched TFL. I decided to go to with an ‘05 LR3 V8 SE that was well taken care of. It’s much larger and better for what we hope to use it for. I installed the Johnson Rods lift and 275/65/18 tires and changed ALL of the fluids. So far, no issues. Our first real trip is coming up this month. I couldn’t be happier that you guys picked one up as well. Now do a comparison of this, the Touareg and the Landcruiser!
Sounds like my story! I too almost got a Touareg. Then after TFL rated the LR3 as a better truck, I bought a well maintained one with the HD pack for $9K 2 years ago. I've spent $1400 on engine mounts, $800 on a transmission service, $700 on new rear air struts, $200 on new front upper control arms, $900 for a new water pump and new thermostat, and soon $2000 on the EPB. Not to mention $500 on a Gap IID tool. I don't regret it though. This thing is a very capable beast off road, and still looks good after almost 20 years. It is a very comfortable ride. Take it off roading in the morning, rinse it off and then take it out to dinner with the wife.
Love that you guys stuck with Rover and moved to a newer gen truck! If I ever decide to replace, or simply retire, my Range Rover Classic, I’m pretty set on an LR3.

X2 I have always liked both (never owned the LR3 though). Went with the Touareg because of the on-road sportiness and more reliable air suspension (it's a well-known point of failure on the LRs but rarely fails on Touaregs).
Not much of a comparison. The LR3 has cross link valves that make it behave like a live axle when needed. Much better system than the Tourareg in terms of ability.
The Nitto Grappler G2 is my go to tire it looks good handles very well in the city with a 60,000+ mile warranty and does good off road. If you're looking for a good off-road tire that actually has a mileage warranty I would highly highly highly recommend the Nitto Grappler G2
You obviously don't luve in CO, there us stuff a half hour outside their front door that would total that mallcrawler. I have an offroad side by side that can't tackle stuff here in CO.

BTW - ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) is a hydraulic reactive anti roll bar (anti sway) setup on the Discovery 2. Completely un-related to cross linked air suspension.

Lr3 is the modern classic. Note it down. After 5 years you’ll look for a clean one but you will not be able to find it. Keep yours. Great car, all time unique.
Lmao my dad still owns a bone stock LR3 (he added a Land Rover brush guard, tailgate ladder, and Land Rover roof rack) but all the parts are OEM, yeah they’ve been replaced (OEM Air struts and air compressor) and the paint is in good condition, no scratches (there is a coin sized dent on the rear quarter panel)

Game Bred Duramax yes, yes, YESSSSSS,!!! FINALLY SOMEONE TALKING SENSE 👌🏼👍🏼 I’ve had a 40 series, 60 series! 80 and lastly a 100 series. They all had a little work done to them and were unstoppable! Even with IFS the 100 was a monster (I didn’t manage to get the diesel so I ended up with the 4.7 V8, same as the Lexus 570.) The only problem I’ve ever had is that I’ve never managed to have a 76 series (Full body SUV version of the 70 series single cab pickup, Ute, bakki, depending on where you’re from) I’ve also had Hilux’s for work for the last 15 years and much like Jeremy Clarkson, I couldn’t kill them either!😂 Sadly I’m currently in a Nissan Navara but am n the lookout for an FJ Cruiser from r thee family.....damn I rambled on there...
Bought exactly that car (2006 hse hd with two diff locks blue) and sold it 12 months later after putting in almost purchase price in repairs. I managed to sell for what I paid for. Loved every minute of it driving, hated the "Bing" sound announcing costly repairs.
So, I had a comment. If you don't want to modify by using the rods you can get a gap iidtool which will also allow you to do more things. Basically factory tool. It can change the car config file, update/ reflash ecus all for $400 or $500 I can't remember. Also, I sent you an email tfl to your truck contact and offroad with advice and a service manual for your lr3. From one lr3 owner to another have fun. Mines an 06 lr3 4.4l non-hd package and it's a decent SE package with a 195,xxx miles on her around the farm.
All my buddies hate my Disco 3. They have Nissan Patrols and Toyota Landcruisers, but in reality, they are almost all aftermarket. The have changed exhausts, suspension, tuning, wheels, on and on and on, and my disco just goes everywhere the way it rolled off the lot. It flogs them in the dirt drags, does the "big wheels and lockers only" tracks without lockers, sleeps me and 2 kids in the back, tows 3.5T, looks great. Uses less fuel, too. And by the way, there isnt anything wrong with the 4.0L petrol. Really there isnt. Will find it hard to part with. Enjoy yours. Great video
Great video, there seems to be a lot of love for Land Rover in the states, here in the U.K. they get a lot of stick, mostly from people who’ve never actually owned one. I own a Freelander 2, or LR2, and a Defender, fabulous vehicles, but I look after them properly, when the time comes for selling the LR2 the Disc is top of my list.
RSW Solutions (a guy who lives in Denver) offers a programming platform for the LR3/Range Rover Sport. With that you can change the air suspension ride height without the rods and also edit/update a lot of the software in the car.
I own a 06 lr3 on 2.5 inch lift with 33 x 12.5 mud tires it has 200,000 miles and is still running strong I absolutely love this truck and I plan to put a diesel cummins when the engine gives out.
Wish we had trails like that in Scotland. My 2006 disco3 is on 200000 miles, still running great. Happy that with the 2.7 diesel it still does 29mpg. Definitely the sweet spot of utility and comfort.
Funny I have the new Disco, the terrain response is so good that I haven’t bothered using the rear diff lock even when going through some pretty interesting stuff up at moose head lake Maine. No problems with old unused logging roads even after many winters of larger rocks eroding through or going through some streams. It always feels very confident, it’s amazing how much further we’ve been able to explore, it replaced a Gle.
weird how it is so different on other parts of the world. I live in europe where we have diesel engine's in both the disco 2 & 3 and the disco 2 is loads better than the disco 3. The td5 engine is super reliable whilst the 2.7 v6 is one of the worst in terms of reliability.
Discovery 2, the best of 'em all imo. My parents owned one for six years it was a 2002MY Td5 GS Manual in 5 seat spec, it towed a caravan AND went off-road or Greenlaning whichever you want to call it. Yes it had it's gremlin's but which Disco doesn't - even series 1's weren't perfect. The D3 is ok I suppose, just to me it doesn't look a rugged as the D1 or D2, but each to their own.
I have the TDV6. It's doing great, as long as you don't stick to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. All failures are either turbo failure, conrod bearing failure or crankshaft bearing failure. The intervals are just too long. Couple that with EGR delete (more heat) and you have a sure way to make that engine seize.
My Discovery 4 Doesn't have the rear locker and I have never felt I've needed it. The consensus from people I've spoken to is that it won't really get you any further up the trail, It'll just make it a bit easier than with only terrain response. I have a few videos of what I've done in mine in Australia.
pro tip - the bleed screw fitting on the cooling system is plastic and has a habit of breaking. This can lead to an overheat and kill the motor. Swap it out for a metal fitting.

Have a look at 4xoverland channel with the LR4 doing Baboons pass in Lesotho, South Africa...now that's a difficult track. I've a defender 90 and had it for 6 years and love it, but the Disco 3's and 4's have become so very affordable now so got me thinking like you too. Nice video guys 👍🇬🇧

Warlock 06 LR 4 is just better. It’s more refined and reliable. The later model, the better. LR3 is also a fine truck but it’s more of a labor of love.
The LR4 came with two different engines, the 5.0L V8 and 3.0L V6 supercharged. Which one of the engines are you talking about? The 5.0L did have some issues when first came out, from what I can tell the 3.0L V6 supercharged did not have the same problems. If I do buy a LR4 it will be the 2016 since that was the last year they made it and it came with the 3.0L V6 supercharged. From what I read the LR4 is a better more refined vehicle.
As a point of interest: Disco 2 had a face-lift, that ( in Australia at least) got you the center difflock. The center diff is the same as the Disco, but LR reconed the TC would take care of the power transfer to where it is needed.
In Europe you can get 2.7 liter turbo diesel v6. May not have as much hp as the Ford v6 (190 hp 450 torque) but it still gets it moving. My dream car, hope to get one someday, HSE would be lovely
If you like the Disco 3 you’ll love an L322. The tdv8 is a great engine, many here in the U.K. are well over 200k miles. If you look after your Land Rover it’ll look after you!
You can also use proud rhinos which sit on top of the air springs to give you a lift/bump stop and act most importantly if the air suspension fail and the car is sitting lower. You can also use a system called x lifter to manually adjust the height on each wheel which is super amazing when sleeping in the car on uneven terrain (-:
I have those exact 7" auxbeams on my Jeep and your not kidding they are super powerful and heavy weighing in at 14 lbs for the two. Also have that 7" bar from auxbeam which works excellent also in a flood pattern.
As a matter of fact I am getting a fabricator this saturday to weld reinforcements on my mopar light bar brackets to stop the constant shaking of it when I'm driving not joking! Lol.

Dang, I could've used those extra MPGs in my trips to Arizona from California. I get 19 mpg in the 2010 hemi Grand cherokee. When looking for a good 4x4 I looked at everything and ended up between the Lr3 and Grand Cherokee. I think the only part that spooked me was the air suspension. Everything else like interior was the best looking for sure in the LR
Ditch the lift rods, buy a GAP2 OBD device and simply have the height programmed into it. Then with a touch of your phone you can make any custom corrections you want and much more also, like custom program options, fault codes, etc etc. Well worth the money lads. The ride on the LR is not as good as LC with its thousands of dollars of new suspension setup vs old original airbags on the LR?
fredbrackely I second getting a Gap but also keeping the rods and dialing in the perfect height. The amount of lift you can get through the tool is inconsistent with each truck and you won’t be able to get the full height that you would get with the rods.
@@andrewhovanetz3525 Best is to set your heights on a flat concrete surface and measure each wheel trim height with a tape measure and fine tune with the GAP. Mine looked something like FR +53, FL +50, RR +65 RL +60 to make it level haha. I think the gap goes up to +75, so you might be right with the rods. I have never tried them. I just wish the GAP was a cheaper. I forgot to add lads, with the GAP tool you can buy a new blank key off ebay and program it for a quarter of the cost of the dealership.
I think I will have to disagree with Roman here: yeah, the Discovery 4 was more advanced than the Discovery 3 but the way I see it, they took an already proven platform and fixed a lot of big things that were not so great about it. Then came Disco 5 which looked like the love child of Disco 4 and RR Evoque. So if I were to pick one of them, it'd be the Disco 4. But another great video guys!
Not one LR3 has successfully been outfitted with arb lockers. Just can’t do it without +5k. I was lucky to get a HD package. Wish you could manually lock the rear but it only goes on when the computer says so. Ie in rock crawl
We're a two Disco family, a 3 and a 4. I prefer the 3 and it's been conquering Australia for the last 6 years with us. The Australians hate it as it's not a V8 fridge on wheels haha. Couldn't give a...! Long live the Disco, looking forward to driving the new Defender in 2020.
I have a 2006 LR3 with the locking rear diff. I do about 60-70% of my driving off road. I've got the Grappler G2's and I don't air down. I have had CJs, TJs, Cherokees, Grand Wagoneers... This truck is more reliable, more comfortable, more economical, and, all in all, more better.(had to stick with the "mores") I'm at about130K, my mechanic tells me she's got 130K more in her. I vowed not to by another vehicle until the new Defender came out. I'm waiting for you guys to do a comparison, so I know whether or not to hold onto this one or upgrade.
The new defender looks to be an LR4 replacement for sure. But it's not a real defender in my book. also the lack of a lader frame hurts driving with big trailers. Still think the LR4 is the best allrounder.
i own an 03 discovery 2 with all the upgrades, drive train wise, part of the attraction to it is the accessibility of the engine components. its easy to work on. the lr3 seems to be difficult to work on or get under. ITS A GIRLY CAR . you should have just gone with a Subaru
LR4 - or Disco 4, is an evolution of the LR3 and I’d say the LR4 is the sweet spot; it’s actually more reliable than the 3 but keeps the off road ability whilst being more luxurious. Love both the 3 and 4 though.
Jason Vorhees The Late model LR3 is the sweet spot. It's more reliable because it has the 4.4 V8 that goes forever. The 5.0 in the LR4 had timing chain issues
Oh I had an 06 HSE. I loved it so much! I really miss that truck! I’ve driven it through several floods with ease! I’ve also had to pick up stranded coworkers in complicated muddy training areas.
Had my Disco 3 now for 12 years. All good still. My engine has 240hp and 600 Nm or 442 lb.ft @ 2000 rpm (diesel) and get 30 mpg (combined). Would never get the petrol.
That’s just a false statement (at least in the US). The LR4 has all of the same “issues” that the LR3 has except the 4.4V8 is far more reliable than the problem ridden 5.0V8....
TheNicknack43 they’re fairly reliable, as air suspension ages you will need to maintain is some. Diffs, transfer case, and transmission fluid should be changed out every 75k. Front LCA bushings like to go bad as well as the tie rods.
The Discovery 2 was an all new vehicle, it might have visually shared the look of the Disco 1, but shares no parts at all. The p38a Range Rover was also all new, as was the L322 Range Rover.....
D2 is my fav. out of all the series. Ppl moaned on for years about 'complicated' and 'sophisticated' electrics on D2's then along came D3, D4, D-sport and D5 which went back to 'stoneage' technology - like series LRs from 1948 :P
I’ve got a Landrover, they are the best of road. No there probably not as reliable as Japanese competition and it WILL need maintenance. But if looked after there’s no competition
I wouldn't knock the D2 too much it's pretty awesome compared to the D1 having traction control and being a little more refined especially if you have a D2 with the ace system it is pretty uniquely good on and off road when that system works in both ways that it does in high or low range. I have one and it's not super unreliable you just have to maintain it take care of it don't just drive it like it's some Toyota Corolla that you can park and completely neglect
Challenge the LR3 with something that you would feel like it couldn’t do and watch what happens. I’m not saying it’s the end all off-roader but mine has never let me down and when I think “There’s no way it will be able to do that” it just crawls right along.
I have an LR3 and mine doesn’t look nearly as nice I got the basic model. It’s a beast off roading. It has issues though, can you make some videos showing how to fix the common issues or make a video on what to remember to maintenance on this model and what to expect to go wrong?
You guys should take some inspiration from Motor Trend in your vehicle naming. How about the Lard Rover or the Bland Rover. Or if you don’t think it’s tough enough, the Disc-Overies. :)
Not true , only the 1st facelift L322 had terain response. Pre facelifted L322 had a Torsen center diff just like an audi and the first generation BMW X5

No. But it's a hell of a lot of 4wd for the price (used.. of course) and I've found the bonus being, not having to have a 2nd car for on the road journeys like I have with my past 4wd's, since the LR3/4 is shockingly composed on road for being so capable off road.
Due to your reviews, I ALMOST purchased a Touareg as a family (wife and I) off roader/overlander but the one I wanted was sold to a guy who also watched TFL. I decided to go to with an ‘05 LR3 V8 SE that was well taken care of. It’s much larger and better for what we hope to use it for. I installed the Johnson Rods lift and 275/65/18 tires and changed ALL of the fluids. So far, no issues. Our first real trip is coming up this month. I couldn’t be happier that you guys picked one up as well. Now do a comparison of this, the Touareg and the Landcruiser!

Have owned three land cruisers, 91,94,2000. Currently own 2006 Touareg v8 and 2005 lr3 hd hse v8 . Touareg best overall. Lr3 best off road by far.
Sounds like my story! I too almost got a Touareg. Then after TFL rated the LR3 as a better truck, I bought a well maintained one with the HD pack for $9K 2 years ago. I've spent $1400 on engine mounts, $800 on a transmission service, $700 on new rear air struts, $200 on new front upper control arms, $900 for a new water pump and new thermostat, and soon $2000 on the EPB. Not to mention $500 on a Gap IID tool.
I don't regret it though. This thing is a very capable beast off road, and still looks good after almost 20 years. It is a very comfortable ride. Take it off roading in the morning, rinse it off and then take it out to dinner with the wife.
You guys are tearing my heart out. I miss my old LR3 so much, watching you having your fun on the trails!
Love that you guys stuck with Rover and moved to a newer gen truck! If I ever decide to replace, or simply retire, my Range Rover Classic, I’m pretty set on an LR3.

I have always liked both (never owned the LR3 though). Went with the Touareg because of the on-road sportiness and more reliable air suspension (it's a well-known point of failure on the LRs but rarely fails on Touaregs).
Not much of a comparison. The LR3 has cross link valves that make it behave like a live axle when needed. Much better system than the Tourareg in terms of ability.

20 years as a JLR tech lr3 is a great vehicle see plenty of them with 200+k miles on them one of my favorites very capable off road

BTW - ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) is a hydraulic reactive anti roll bar (anti sway) setup on the Discovery 2. Completely un-related to cross linked air suspension.

Lr3 is the modern classic. Note it down. After 5 years you’ll look for a clean one but you will not be able to find it. Keep yours. Great car, all time unique.

Lmao my dad still owns a bone stock LR3 (he added a Land Rover brush guard, tailgate ladder, and Land Rover roof rack) but all the parts are OEM, yeah they’ve been replaced (OEM Air struts and air compressor) and the paint is in good condition, no scratches (there is a coin sized dent on the rear quarter panel)

Game Bred Duramax yes, yes, YESSSSSS,!!! FINALLY SOMEONE TALKING SENSE 👌🏼👍🏼 I’ve had a 40 series, 60 series! 80 and lastly a 100 series. They all had a little work done to them and were unstoppable! Even with IFS the 100 was a monster (I didn’t manage to get the diesel so I ended up with the 4.7 V8, same as the Lexus 570.) The only problem I’ve ever had is that I’ve never managed to have a 76 series (Full body SUV version of the 70 series single cab pickup, Ute, bakki, depending on where you’re from)
I’ve also had Hilux’s for work for the last 15 years and much like Jeremy Clarkson, I couldn’t kill them either!😂 Sadly I’m currently in a Nissan Navara but am n the lookout for an FJ Cruiser from r thee family.....damn I rambled on there...

Bought exactly that car (2006 hse hd with two diff locks blue) and sold it 12 months later after putting in almost purchase price in repairs. I managed to sell for what I paid for. Loved every minute of it driving, hated the "Bing" sound announcing costly repairs.
So, I had a comment. If you don't want to modify by using the rods you can get a gap iidtool which will also allow you to do more things. Basically factory tool. It can change the car config file, update/ reflash ecus all for $400 or $500 I can't remember. Also, I sent you an email tfl to your truck contact and offroad with advice and a service manual for your lr3. From one lr3 owner to another have fun. Mines an 06 lr3 4.4l non-hd package and it's a decent SE package with a 195,xxx miles on her around the farm.
All my buddies hate my Disco 3. They have Nissan Patrols and Toyota Landcruisers, but in reality, they are almost all aftermarket. The have changed exhausts, suspension, tuning, wheels, on and on and on, and my disco just goes everywhere the way it rolled off the lot. It flogs them in the dirt drags, does the "big wheels and lockers only" tracks without lockers, sleeps me and 2 kids in the back, tows 3.5T, looks great. Uses less fuel, too. And by the way, there isnt anything wrong with the 4.0L petrol. Really there isnt. Will find it hard to part with. Enjoy yours. Great video
Great video, there seems to be a lot of love for Land Rover in the states, here in the U.K. they get a lot of stick, mostly from people who’ve never actually owned one. I own a Freelander 2, or LR2, and a Defender, fabulous vehicles, but I look after them properly, when the time comes for selling the LR2 the Disc is top of my list.
RSW Solutions (a guy who lives in Denver) offers a programming platform for the LR3/Range Rover Sport. With that you can change the air suspension ride height without the rods and also edit/update a lot of the software in the car.

I own a 06 lr3 on 2.5 inch lift with 33 x 12.5 mud tires it has 200,000 miles and is still running strong I absolutely love this truck and I plan to put a diesel cummins when the engine gives out.

Wish we had trails like that in Scotland. My 2006 disco3 is on 200000 miles, still running great. Happy that with the 2.7 diesel it still does 29mpg. Definitely the sweet spot of utility and comfort.
I got the same 2006 td 2.7 in australia. This is unexpected beast, just add 33” all terrain tyres and it will never disappoint anyone.
Funny I have the new Disco, the terrain response is so good that I haven’t bothered using the rear diff lock even when going through some pretty interesting stuff up at moose head lake Maine. No problems with old unused logging roads even after many winters of larger rocks eroding through or going through some streams. It always feels very confident, it’s amazing how much further we’ve been able to explore, it replaced a Gle.

weird how it is so different on other parts of the world. I live in europe where we have diesel engine's in both the disco 2 & 3 and the disco 2 is loads better than the disco 3. The td5 engine is super reliable whilst the 2.7 v6 is one of the worst in terms of reliability.
Discovery 2, the best of 'em all imo. My parents owned one for six years it was a 2002MY Td5 GS Manual in 5 seat spec, it towed a caravan AND went off-road or Greenlaning whichever you want to call it. Yes it had it's gremlin's but which Disco doesn't - even series 1's weren't perfect. The D3 is ok I suppose, just to me it doesn't look a rugged as the D1 or D2, but each to their own.
I have the TDV6. It's doing great, as long as you don't stick to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.
All failures are either turbo failure, conrod bearing failure or crankshaft bearing failure. The intervals are just too long.
Couple that with EGR delete (more heat) and you have a sure way to make that engine seize.
My Discovery 4 Doesn't have the rear locker and I have never felt I've needed it. The consensus from people I've spoken to is that it won't really get you any further up the trail, It'll just make it a bit easier than with only terrain response. I have a few videos of what I've done in mine in Australia.
pro tip - the bleed screw fitting on the cooling system is plastic and has a habit of breaking. This can lead to an overheat and kill the motor. Swap it out for a metal fitting.

Have a look at 4xoverland channel with the LR4 doing Baboons pass in Lesotho, South Africa...now that's a difficult track. I've a defender 90 and had it for 6 years and love it, but the Disco 3's and 4's have become so very affordable now so got me thinking like you too. Nice video guys 👍🇬🇧

I am glad you did a video on this vehicle, I am looking at buying my wife a LR4 in the coming months. The 3 and 4 are pretty similar I think with capability.
Warlock 06 LR 4 is just better. It’s more refined and reliable. The later model, the better. LR3 is also a fine truck but it’s more of a labor of love.
Actually drivetrain wise the LR3 is far superior. LR4’s have water pump, timing chain and injector issues, the LR3 doesn’t.

The LR4 came with two different engines, the 5.0L V8 and 3.0L V6 supercharged. Which one of the engines are you talking about? The 5.0L did have some issues when first came out, from what I can tell the 3.0L V6 supercharged did not have the same problems. If I do buy a LR4 it will be the 2016 since that was the last year they made it and it came with the 3.0L V6 supercharged. From what I read the LR4 is a better more refined vehicle.
As a point of interest: Disco 2 had a face-lift, that ( in Australia at least) got you the center difflock. The center diff is the same as the Disco, but LR reconed the TC would take care of the power transfer to where it is needed.
In Europe you can get 2.7 liter turbo diesel v6. May not have as much hp as the Ford v6 (190 hp 450 torque) but it still gets it moving.

If you like the Disco 3 you’ll love an L322. The tdv8 is a great engine, many here in the U.K. are well over 200k miles. If you look after your Land Rover it’ll look after you!

The Toyota's traction capability is not even close. You would need lockers on the Toyota to compare it with the LR3 traction system.

You can also use proud rhinos which sit on top of the air springs to give you a lift/bump stop and act most importantly if the air suspension fail and the car is sitting lower. You can also use a system called x lifter to manually adjust the height on each wheel which is super amazing when sleeping in the car on uneven terrain (-:
I have those exact 7" auxbeams on my Jeep and your not kidding they are super powerful and heavy weighing in at 14 lbs for the two. Also have that 7" bar from auxbeam which works excellent also in a flood pattern.
As a matter of fact I am getting a fabricator this saturday to weld reinforcements on my mopar light bar brackets to stop the constant shaking of it when I'm driving not joking! Lol.

Dang, I could've used those extra MPGs in my trips to Arizona from California. I get 19 mpg in the 2010 hemi Grand cherokee. When looking for a good 4x4 I looked at everything and ended up between the Lr3 and Grand Cherokee. I think the only part that spooked me was the air suspension. Everything else like interior was the best looking for sure in the LR
no you don't, you might see that on the instant meter or you were going downhill.

Ditch the lift rods, buy a GAP2 OBD device and simply have the height programmed into it. Then with a touch of your phone you can make any custom corrections you want and much more also, like custom program options, fault codes, etc etc. Well worth the money lads. The ride on the LR is not as good as LC with its thousands of dollars of new suspension setup vs old original airbags on the LR?
fredbrackely I second getting a Gap but also keeping the rods and dialing in the perfect height. The amount of lift you can get through the tool is inconsistent with each truck and you won’t be able to get the full height that you would get with the rods.
@@andrewhovanetz3525 Best is to set your heights on a flat concrete surface and measure each wheel trim height with a tape measure and fine tune with the GAP. Mine looked something like FR +53, FL +50, RR +65 RL +60 to make it level haha. I think the gap goes up to +75, so you might be right with the rods. I have never tried them. I just wish the GAP was a cheaper. I forgot to add lads, with the GAP tool you can buy a new blank key off ebay and program it for a quarter of the cost of the dealership.
I think I will have to disagree with Roman here: yeah, the Discovery 4 was more advanced than the Discovery 3 but the way I see it, they took an already proven platform and fixed a lot of big things that were not so great about it. Then came Disco 5 which looked like the love child of Disco 4 and RR Evoque. So if I were to pick one of them, it'd be the Disco 4.

Not one LR3 has successfully been outfitted with arb lockers. Just can’t do it without +5k. I was lucky to get a HD package. Wish you could manually lock the rear but it only goes on when the computer says so. Ie in rock crawl

We're a two Disco family, a 3 and a 4. I prefer the 3 and it's been conquering Australia for the last 6 years with us. The Australians hate it as it's not a V8 fridge on wheels haha. Couldn't give a...! Long live the Disco, looking forward to driving the new Defender in 2020.
I have a 2006 LR3 with the locking rear diff. I do about 60-70% of my driving off road. I've got the Grappler G2's and I don't air down. I have had CJs, TJs, Cherokees, Grand Wagoneers... This truck is more reliable, more comfortable, more economical, and, all in all, more better.(had to stick with the "mores") I'm at about130K, my mechanic tells me she's got 130K more in her. I vowed not to by another vehicle until the new Defender came out. I'm waiting for you guys to do a comparison, so I know whether or not to hold onto this one or upgrade.
The new defender looks to be an LR4 replacement for sure. But it's not a real defender in my book.
also the lack of a lader frame hurts driving with big trailers.

i own an 03 discovery 2 with all the upgrades, drive train wise, part of the attraction to it is the accessibility of the engine components. its easy to work on. the lr3 seems to be difficult to work on or get under. ITS A GIRLY CAR . you should have just gone with a Subaru

LR4 - or Disco 4, is an evolution of the LR3 and I’d say the LR4 is the sweet spot; it’s actually more reliable than the 3 but keeps the off road ability whilst being more luxurious. Love both the 3 and 4 though.

The Late model LR3 is the sweet spot. It's more reliable because it has the 4.4 V8 that goes forever. The 5.0 in the LR4 had timing chain issues
Honestly that is a lot of vehicle for 7 grand considering the condition it is in.
Great vehicle had 05' for 11 years! Watch the air suspension leaks can cause air compressor repairs, if or when it breaks it'll be a good grand easy.
the Disco 3 is honestly one of the few used Land Rover's I would recommend. It's actually fairly reliable compared to the Disco 2
Oh I had an 06 HSE. I loved it so much! I really miss that truck! I’ve driven it through several floods with ease! I’ve also had to pick up stranded coworkers in complicated muddy training areas.
Hopefully the air suspension in this Land Rover doesn't fail them as many times as it did on Doug DeMuro's Land Rover... LOL

Had my Disco 3 now for 12 years. All good still. My engine has 240hp and 600 Nm or 442 lb.ft @ 2000 rpm (diesel) and get 30 mpg (combined). Would never get the petrol.

That’s just a false statement (at least in the US). The LR4 has all of the same “issues” that the LR3 has except the 4.4V8 is far more reliable than the problem ridden 5.0V8....
TheNicknack43 they’re fairly reliable, as air suspension ages you will need to maintain is some. Diffs, transfer case, and transmission fluid should be changed out every 75k. Front LCA bushings like to go bad as well as the tie rods.

The Discovery 2 was an all new vehicle, it might have visually shared the look of the Disco 1, but shares no parts at all. The p38a Range Rover was also all new, as was the L322 Range Rover.....
D2 is my fav. out of all the series. Ppl moaned on for years about 'complicated' and 'sophisticated' electrics on D2's then along came D3, D4, D-sport and D5 which went back to 'stoneage' technology - like series LRs from 1948 :P

I’ve got a Landrover, they are the best of road. No there probably not as reliable as Japanese competition and it WILL need maintenance. But if looked after there’s no competition
I wouldn't knock the D2 too much it's pretty awesome compared to the D1 having traction control and being a little more refined especially if you have a D2 with the ace system it is pretty uniquely good on and off road when that system works in both ways that it does in high or low range. I have one and it's not super unreliable you just have to maintain it take care of it don't just drive it like it's some Toyota Corolla that you can park and completely neglect

Challenge the LR3 with something that you would feel like it couldn’t do and watch what happens. I’m not saying it’s the end all off-roader but mine has never let me down and when I think “There’s no way it will be able to do that” it just crawls right along.
I have an LR3 and mine doesn’t look nearly as nice I got the basic model. It’s a beast off roading. It has issues though, can you make some videos showing how to fix the common issues or make a video on what to remember to maintenance on this model and what to expect to go wrong?
You really need to take a Disco 5 for a run before you make your mind up. I really is something special. The Disco 4 was great but he 5 ... awesome.

The L322 Range Rover had terrain response and went to the "modern format" independent suspension and air springs years before the LR3 came out.
Not true , only the 1st facelift L322 had terain response.
Pre facelifted L322 had a Torsen center diff just like an audi and the first generation BMW X5
