I’ve contemplated selling my Helix LT so many times because of the “Analysis Paralysis” I get stuck in because there’s just SO MUCH going on inside of it. I’ve watched so many others videos and still found a way to get stuck/confused by on how I need it to work for me. Currently running a Catalyst 200 and Helix LT and have been stuck trying to figure out how to 4CM and make it work for me and your videos have helped immensely! Thanks again!
I've used HX Stomp for three years in live worship setting. I use snapshots (Clean/OD Rhythm/Lead). A great addition has been additional two button foot switch. This has allowed direct access to tuner/mute on one button and the second I set to on/off of OD/Boost block. So I still have the small form factor I prefer with useful expansion when I want.
Happy to see you are a snapshot lover too! Definitely my favourite on the Helix + Variax : how to change everything (including guitar and tuning) with just one switch! Best regards from France, and bravo, as usual 🙂
Been using Helix for a few years now ( Stomp 1st and then upgraded to Helix floor ) but i always learn something new with your videos and has made my journey with helix a lot easier as i was on the verge of getting rid of the stomp and going back to pedals before i discovered your guides, keep up the great content Scott.
I use mine mainly in Stomp mode. I tend to use one amp for mostly everything I do. When I need really good clean tones I have a different preset as well as one for my acoustic. Another great video Scott!!
Great video as usual, Scott! And the timing is impeccable, as I'm going over to a buddy's house today to help him with his new Helix. This will probably be over his head, but maybe not after my visit.
I personally use stomp mode the most but only because ive been lazy about setting up all the different snapshots for the individual songs. Just need to take a few nights and set them all up. Maybe a few more if do the variax programming too😂😂 . Your videos on the helix def have helped. I was lost when i first got this thing but im really enjoying it now.
Very helpful...thank you. This stuff is very confusing to a potential buyer or first time user. I get the sense that you should start as simple as you can while maintaining the functionality you think you'll need. It's a difficult call.
Hi Scott. Thanks for all your help and input not only with the helix family but also with wireless systems, stage traxx and live music in general. About changing blocks in snapshot mode, i'm not completely sure about this, but I think that you can change your IR's from one snapshot to another
Thanks! And I haven’t tried that with IRs, but that would make sense since it’s a parameter change, not a block change. Excellent point! I hadn’t thought of that
i got the HX stomp Xl because i wanted it to act just like a little pedal board. I got a midi switch that jumps between the 4 snapshots clean/boost /crunch/distortion. I use the 6 buttons on the XL to turn the effects on and off as I want. I think this is the best way of using snapshots and stomp mode and making it still seem like you might be using an analogue rig and amplifier. Best Thing I ever bought!.
Hey Scott! Happy new year!!! I wish you a WONDERFULL 2024 with health, luck, happiness and wealth for you and your family! I was wondering if the Helix is powerful enough to control the x32/Xr18 FX sends en values with snapshots and Expression pedal via midi? I know that the Midi integration in the X32 is a little weak but I think it's possible! Thx for all the content. I've been bingewatching them the last 2 weeks :)
Oh nice! The stomp or stomp xl might be good options since they are smaller and she doesn’t need to use the amp modeling. Although HX Effects is the helix minus the amp modeling so that’s worth looking into as well 👍
I never really got into my Helix LT for the few years that I had it and ended up swapping it out for a Headrush Pedalboard. I think the LT had a sonic edge with some effect, but the HR is super strong on the direct UI experience. The ability to save pedal presets and choose those when recalling a scene is pretty amazing, and the ability to use footswitches as either single pedal or scene without having to split them like 4/4 is pretty awesome. A recent addition was to be able to toggle scenes on s since switch. So the first time I stomp a switch it'll do 1 scene and if I hit it again I can bring in yet another allowing me to have 2x as many scenes on a single preset. The real kicker is the ability to swap out amp/cab/IR in-between snapshots which is a little insane to be fair. I run basically a single patch for an entire cover band :)
Oh interesting. I do find that the helix is very easy to program imo for basic stuff, and can go deeper and more complex. But the HR is a great unit too 🤘
I have an HX Stomp, and usually use Snapshots Mode. In the rare instance that I need more than 3 Snapshots, I duplicate the original Preset, and can then dial in 3 additional Snapshots there. Placing it after the original Preset makes it a nearly seamless transition from one to the next.
HX Stomp has been one of my best investments. I select a song on my tablet in Bandhelper, which sends a midi CC to the HX Stomp and H9 Eventide through a Yamaha UD-BT01 Wireless Midi Adapter. So all wiress, never has failed me in >2 years. One bug is nagging me: sending CC with midi-through to the H9 with FS4 (Ampero 2-button extension) freezes the HX. It has been doing so for the last firmware releases.
Nice setup! Glad it’s been working. And that’s really interesting… sometimes firmware updates cause problems like that. Hopefully it gets fixed soon! Be sure to message line 6 and let them know you found a bug
The thing ilike about helix is that you can use native plugi in the studio and rehearsal space and tranfer the patches to the pedal to use live. The tone x pedal is like this as well. I cant wait for a pedal that can work with any plugins and upload multiple plugins together that will be a game changer because then you can use studio plugins for compressors and eq and things like the Nam plugin for amps and helix Native for your effects all at the same time without needing a laptop or interface ect
Great video Scott! I actually didn't know of the Snapshot mode. Thanks much for explaining. Hey, do you know Valeton GP-200? If so, any chance you can review that too, perhaps even compare to Helix? It's perhaps not as comprehensive as Helix, but it's incredible and it's super super cheap! If at all possible that you review Valeton GP-200 it'll be great.
Heres one i havent ran across, I have an hx stomp xl in a pedal board with a few external pedals but no reverb or delay pedals. Foh is good. But how does one use something like a strymon delay and reverb external pedals in the signal chain to save on dsp? Both for foh or 4 cable method with a real amp if need be. Your videos are quite helpful. Thx
I'm using the Quad Cortex, but usage is roughly the same. I'm curious about 2 things when using it in this way (one preset per song). 1. sometimes I want to tweak a present for loudness/normalization with another guitarist and I don't want to do this across N presets. Do you run into this? and 2. do you set up your board to have all the songs in order before you start? Do you ever change it up in realtime and have to tap dance around to find the song's preset? Thanks!
The normalization battle is a tough one. I just try to make sure all my patches are pretty even as much as I can overall. And if something changes then yeah, I’ll have to scroll through to find the preset…. Or I just use midi and it does it for me :)
Hi Scot, Is it possible to switch to a specific preset by sending midi instructions from your IPad, so you don’t have to scroll through your presets on the Helix to find the right one? Would be nice by just finding the song on your iPad made the Helix switch to the corresponding preset.
I'm in stomp mode with a preset for every song. I'm using midi to control lighting. I don't think that would work in snapshot mode? Correct me if I'm wrong.
So snapshot mode is basically just a bunch of presets assigned to different buttons without a delay when you switch between them? I think on the XL i can have 4 from what i've read. Can i make 4 more for each new preset for like another song. Or just 4 snapshots total and that's it?
4 snapshots total on the xl, if you need more you’ll need the full helix or LT. And kind of yes, it’s a way to arrange your parameters your pedals and amps with one button press
Great video! I'd love to use presets for each song myself but what if the foh engineer asks you to change a parameter (treble? Volume?) on a sound that you use on almost every song? It looks like a p.i.t.a. to change all of them 😢
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks for your reply but maybe I wasn't clear enough. Let's say that you have 20 presets and all of them have 3 snapshot and you have to change something in only one of these snapshots (e.g. crunch) in every preset
DEVICE to turn "page" controls into footswitch? Have you found the one pictured in this video? I mean, on HX Stomp, to access MODES during a performance. I'm just learning Snapshots. Hopefully I will figure out how to just use Snapshots without wanting to switch to Preset/Stomp mode on the fly. THANKS!
Great video on the specific snapshot topic. BUT - some gentle criticism. Don't forget you can always assign multiple parameter changes and block activations/bypasses to one stomp switch - in my opinion it's more simple than dealing with snapshots because you can stay in stomp mode all the time and reap the same sort of benefits. The fact that you didn't even mention the possibility in the video is a bit of a glaring omission, in my opinion. And you're leaving out the power of Command Center to put snap or preset selections on a stomp in stomp mode. So, yeah. A few more options for people if they don't want to do any "mode tap dancing" Helix/HX is AMAZING in all the ways you can use it. So much deeper than just Snap/Stomp/Preset. :)
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll always accept constructive criticisms 🤘 however I did mention that during the stomp part of the video. Specifically with the amp part how you can assign more than one. Even with that I do find snapshots to be better because of the parameter changes, and it STILL reduces pedal dancing because in “verse” your reverb with be on and the delay on and the distortion off and the correct amp settings selected. It’s MUCH easier to do that in snapshots. And I did mention command center as a suggested video of mine to watch as well. Again, there is no right or wrong way to use the helix. But again, thank you for watching and the suggestion 🤘 Hopefully some people will read it and find another way to use the helix as well. Thanks again man 🤘🤘
@@ScottUhlMusic But it's not just toggling - you can assign all the same parameter changes you'd make in a snapshot to an individual stomp, actually. For MULTIPLE blocks on the same exact footswitch. My lead stomp is usually a multitude of changes - from turning on a dirt pedal, bringing up the gain and presence and mids on the amp model, to bringing up the delay feedback, and adding a +3dB boost on the output block. All with one stomp and no snapshots. It's like having four extra hands and three extra feet. :) And no keeping track of what snapshot you're editing. (I missed the Command Center video mention - sorry about that.)
