  • I got this mechanic special BMW 328D with N47T diesel engine. It has 131k miles. All signs pointed to high pressure fuel pump failure and dealership quoted 15K for fuel system repairs. Here is a Brief diagnosis procedure with ISTA and how to for the cp4 high pressure pump removal or inspection. Found timing chains failed which were supposed to not be an issue for USA models. Its hard to say what came first the chain failure or pump failure. I suspected the pump maybe locked up causing chain to break. Will make another video when I know more.
    Fault codes
    273C00 camshaft sensor no signal
    248500 rail pressure too low
248600 rail pressure too low high load
249300 rail pressure too low engine start

Thanks for the video, had the same codes. I’m happy that it saved me buying a HPFP straight away. However now annoyed its more serious than a new pump 😂

Just did the High Pressure Fuel Pump job on my 2014 328d this year. Took me 3 months to figure it out. I changed the fuel filter and cleaned or replaced everything forward of that. The problem with the injectors is that if one fails, you have to replace them all. No way to test them individually. I first tried an Ebay set that failed in 10 minutes. Another set that failed, and finally purchased a set form a BMW dealer that are still running fine. You can drag a magnet on a string or wire in the tank to clean out the metal bits as they are ferrous. I.e. attracted to a magnet. But you probably don't have to. They just settle at the bottoms of the tank. I threw an extra magnet in the tank just for fun anyway. Looking forward to your progress with the timing chain. Mine might be next? 👍 Video

Ive worked on these since they came out and havent ran into the need to replace all injectors just because. Usually you will get a fault or you can the deviations in a test module within BMW ista. I would definitely never use anything outside of genuine new or "OE". I expect metal to just chill inside the fuel tank but ive also seen metal in the fuel tanks of gas bmws and non high pressure fuel system vehicles. I find it nearly impossible for metal to make it past the in tank fuel pump filter then the fuel filter at the front of the car. I like your magnet idea though! Little extra security. Just playing around with youtube at this point, its hard to do things when working on cars as the day job as well. Once I scope the cylinders i expect a rather quick timing job once i pull the motor. Everything i found for this is for EURO models and not the usa. Also there is a brand new recall for the high pressure fuel pump , you should probably check your vin with bmw. If its listed you may get another new pump or apply for reimbursement. Note this is different from the 120K warranty extension.

@@matthewdigiacomo8764 yes. I have a TREAD Act claim I'm with BMW for reimbursement for the high pressure fuel pump. Strange, when my injectors fail, they leak so much that in is impossible to maintain rail pressure tomstsrt.yhe vehicle. Perhaps the particular failure plagued me twice? I did have to code in my new injectors though. Where on ISTA do you look to check individual injectors?

@@deleteduser3749 I havent encountered the type of failure you're describing yet for the injectors. Ill have to double check when i hook up ista again to the car. To be honest it might be one of those things bmw like to does where you can only see that info with a certain fault code stored. But it will show like a deviation of flow +/- 3 or something. I want to say its under function structure -engine electronics

@@matthewdigiacomo8764 yeah. My failures were so bad my oil pan was full of fuel. Not just a smooth running fault. Swarf kills these injectors.

@@deleteduser3749 Well that makes sense but it's the first time I have heard it. Could be why BMW wants the whole fuel system refreshed. Thanks for the info. This also the first time I have come across broken chains on this motor. First time for everything I guess. I dont have the injectors in front of me but I thought the factory ones are made by bosch, did you entertain these ones? www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-def-injector-bosch-18308514448

What does ista reccomend if it was just a pump failure replacement and not the chain. I read a lot if horror stories about needing to replace the whioe fuel system. But i would have doubt metalnwoukd go through the fuel filter

Did you end up fixing the chai and did the injector get clogged at all?

Regarding specifically code 249300 - is there anyway of telling specifically which part of the fuel system is causing the pressure to not get high enough. 396bar required.value Getting to 320 (then less and less as battery strains on further attempts) I've got no start at all.

Are these cars dependable? I’m looking at a 2014 with 102,000 miles on it.

I would say yes but Ive been hearing of more of timing chain issues on these diesels like they had in europe

@@matthewdigiacomo8764 (2015 328d x drive 100,288 miles) was driving abt 65/70mph abt 300 miles into a trip and lost ability to accelerate. No sounds prior prior to failure. smooth ride. Pulled over turned the car off after drivetrain malfunction error on screen.
Car will not crank only power on. Dealer states repair probably more than value of the car. This is hypothetical because broken chain hasn’t been confirmed but he says 99% sure that’s the issue. Is it possible that I can get by on just replacing chain… or is it more likely than not valves, heads etc are damaged. I’m a woman that knows minimum. Wagon is very sentimental to me but I may have to let it go if it’s not worth saving. thanks n adv

Same problem with mine. 2015 328D lost power cruising. Car has 137k mikes. Been babied and serviced by bmw all its life. Had towed and sending crank code. Repair shop said it is turning bottom of engine but the top is not thus indicating timing chain broke. So pay the money to pull the engine and fix? Yeah not happening. Very upset to say the least. High pressure fuel pump, timing chain, and valve cover leaks are a must to change if you’re trying to keep this going over 100k. If you’re not a mechanic be ready to pay thousands. BMW quoted me 3k just to replace the valve cover and gasket. Ha, redic. Bye bye bmw

any car is dependable if you perform the recommended maintenance. It appears that some cars attract certain type of people in BMW case a good chunck of owners can't read or don't care to read. The N47 engine has a recommended maintenance for timing chain between 80k and 100k miles, the job is not extremely hard but it is not for the casual diy-er at a shop will take you anywhere from 700-1400$ + say 700$ in parts. Once you completed this and assuming you keep up with fluids replacements filters and such the car is dependable. If you looking at one and can't prove it had the timing job done just negotiate the price to allow for a 2500-3000$ future maintenance. BUT DON"T SKIP IT! Get the car and take it straight to the shop to get it done as for fluids that is a must at any time you buy a used car (brake pads (if needed) oil, oil-fuel-engine-air and cabin air filters, brake fluid, steering fluid and transmission fluid)
