Michael Jordan and Lebron James: The Complete Statistical Guide with Stunning Conclusion

  • This is the most complete and definitive statistical reference to any comparison between Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Does Jordan dominate LeBron just as he does to everyone else when all the numbers and records are compared? The conclusion may amaze.
*There is a typo at the 7:00 mark in "Top 31 Significant Stats"; Category 26, Line 23. It should read MJ 5,633 assists to LBJ 8,577. The total count (19-10) was also a typo. With the corrections, MJ still wins the category 18-13 so the conclusion is unaffected. All career totals and total items won have been updated as of 3/8/19.
*There is an incorrect win for LeBron in Category 19 where he was given a win for a lower 3 fg%. MJ wins the category 8-2 instead of 8-3.
*Also, MJ's playoff record for blocks by a guard (158), Line 36 in Playoffs Records, has been broken by Dwyane Wade (175). (All corrections are reflected in the link.)
*Update 3/9/19: Category 26 (Top 31 Significant Stats) has been updated to "Top 35
Significant Stats" in the link which MJ wins 21-14.
*Update 11/13/19: A couple of small errors have been found and those along with all 2020 stats and records will be updated on the website after the 2020 season.

no some of those awards didn't exist back then so Bill Russell in reality has the most awards by a large margin.

@@raferalstonisgoat4457 Thats true thats why its hard to compare older players for awards and goat status.. Theres always going to be an * on it. But there are awards that already existed that we can compare for the sake of GOAT conversations. For example. Nba 1st and 2nd teams. Bill mostly made 2nd team 8x compared to 1st team with only 3x. In their Celtics team theres always Bob Cousy that made the 1st team 10x and 2nd is Bill Sharman who has 4x first team. Thats why I cant say that in those 11 rings, he was the "man" in all of it. And especially in that league there were like 8-10 teams. Now compare that to MJ 10x Nba first team and only 1x 2nd team. Pippen, who was the 2nd best player, only made it 3x.

Note - 2nd/3rd place DPOY votes did not exist prior to 2003 season
Outside of the 2012/13 season, less than 1/3 of LeBron’s DPOY votes in any season he received them came from 1st place votes. Since 2nd/3rd place votes for DPOY did not exist until 2002/03, this means LeBron would not have even received the vast majority of his career DPOY votes in Jordan’s era. And that is without factoring in the higher quality of DPOY candidates MJ faced.
    Evidence of this -
Alonzo Mourning is a 2x DPOY, yet never made All-Defense 1st or 2nd Team, nor received any DPOY votes in Jordan’s era for 6 seasons (1992/93 - 1997/98)
Jason Kidd has 9 total All-Defense selections, tied for 6th-most all-time. Yet never made All-Defense 1st or 2nd Team, nor received any DPOY votes in Jordan’s era for 4 seasons (1994/95 - 1997/98)
Jordan won 1988 DPOY over Hakeem, Eaton, Robertson, and Cooper.
Jordan was tied 2nd place in 1993 DPOY with David Robinson behind Hakeem and ahead of Rodman.
Lebron failed to win DPOY against much lesser DPOY winners such as Camby, Chandler, Noah, Gasol, and Gobert. None of whom would have likely even made All-Defense in Jordan’s era, as 2x DPOY and 2x blocks champion Alonzo Mourning never did.

This really proves that the 1980s and 1990s saw the greatest concentration of GOAT defenders in NBA history. Since then it wasn't the same or defenses are dead. Today's players look unstoppable because the league penalizes great defense as a foul. The most glaring facts are today's players mostly possesses only average skills. It's all about pure athleticism and shooting range which for me as a basketball fan is too boring to watch. All teams today basically scores 120 points or more almost every game.

They aren’t playing the same players so awards are a tough grade.
Imo if Jordan played today he’d have more awards and better #s
But all you have to do is just WATCH
And if you understand the game
    You’d see who’s clearly better
You ask who’s the better offensive player?
    The better defender?
    Better leader?
    Better clutch?
Then who impacts the game and leaves a mark on the game for players and fans?
You got people counting rebounds when there’s more uncontested rebounds than ever
Got people counting assists in a league where it’s straight auto shoot on a pass
A league where a guy can get endless pick n rolls and players instantly switch for no reason
    & finally I ask
If you had to pick a player to have for 15 years
And you got to build a team around them
And the only thing that matters in this game is winning. That’s the point of it all
    Who would you take?
When you compare Lebron to other guys
His name will plummet down the list of all time great players

    • @hoopsencyclopedia
      @hoopsencyclopedia  5 лет назад +11

Thank you, that's what it's all about. The stats have always been viciously MJ dominant and he has all the most difficult alpha points records and #1 records. Other than career totals which MJ didn't care about since he took so many years off, it's basically a sweep all across the board. In my estimation, if he came out of college earlier and didn't retire twice, he would easily have 41,000+ career points, but if he didn't win while doing it, it would actually hurt his legacy imo. The perfection is what dominates as well as the domination itself.

    • @gpapa31
      @gpapa31 5 лет назад +4

@@hoopsencyclopedia IMHO if he had not retired in 1993 he would not have the stamina and a rested body (not that he was fully rested playing Pro baseball but anyway) to win another 3 titles. I was gutted he retired in 1998, cause I think those old Bulls could have been favoured by the short season the next year and would almost certainly win another ring. He would have 7 rings by now, most likely another MVP (6 total), definitely his 7th FMVP, better stats (definitely better PPG with same a Total Points) and would not have to punish his stats and body further by playing those stupid Wizard years. Perfect ending. But never mind, even without that he is the absolute undisputed GOAT. The perfect specimen of a player with the most franchise wins and Team awards along with personal statistics. And of course his impact on the sport is immeasurable.

    • @hoopsencyclopedia
      @hoopsencyclopedia  5 лет назад +6

@@gpapa31 No doubt the bar would have been placed even higher out of reach. All without defeats and with FMVPs? All possible and unthinkable for anyone, except MJ.

Those BPM & Win Share stats are wrong. BPM was retooled after Westbrook broke it. He basically made the creator realise it was poorly conceived and so he refined the formula. Now Jordan is the all time career leader in BPM and up until the same age led LeBron 10.2 to 8.9. As for win shares, they are preferably stated as 'per 48' numbers because per game numbers don't take into account the fact players don't play the same number of minutes per game. Using per 48 numbers MJ comes out on top, quite clearly so...up until age 35 MJ was 0.274 while LeBron is at 0.234. That is a big gap.

because LBJ is bigger stronger and faster. and because LBJ is seemingly a lot more chill than MJ. i think people who say LBJ presume that if he's bigger that's an advantage, But also a big part of it is that people who are averse to intensity are averse to Jordan. i enjoy LBJ's game more, even though Bulls games are nostalgic for me, and i still to this day watch full Bulls games from the 90s and 80s. Michael Jordan's game is smooth and beautiful, but there's always that hesitation to like him, because maybe he's a dickhead. When I was a kid I liked the Bulls because they win, but when I watched I rooted for Rodman, not for Jordan. Jordan forces me to respect his game, but doesn't gain my empathy. I think for people my age, what we like about LeBron is that he seems to be super talented, but his drive doesn't come from being a dickhead. I feel like people who watch the Godfather and empathise with the mobsters are people who like Jordan. I watch the Godfather, I admire the wit of Michael Corleone, his strategy, his dominance, even his vulnerabilities, but I don't empathise with him.
And btw, i'm referring to the players' on court personas, i don't care about their personal and public life. i'm just talking about how James is having fun at half-time, doing hand shakes and dancing, while Jordan is just always trash talking, head to the ground, focused, intense. LBJ acts as though it's light but yet he carries his team. Jordan carries his team alright, but with his attitude, he better.

I think the best way to evaluate ALL-TIME Greats is their best 10-consecutive years. That would cover absolute peak and prime. Also, it is long enough to account for longevity. It's the cut-off for me for all eras....Since players before the 1990's generally spent 4-years in college and came in the league at 21 to 22 years old.
So take their best 10-year reign(not 10 best years...best 10 consecutive) and see what happens.

I agree that MJ is the GOAT, but your statements about offensive rebounding are pure bullshit and ignorance. The modern game has coaches that put an emphasis away from offensive rebounding, and towards transitional defense. Having less offensive rebounds, especially in this era is not an indication of how good of a rebounder you are, nor does it represent a lack of effort.
Good job putting some numbers together for the video but biased interpretation doesn't help your case.

Two things of importance to note:
    1. Not all statistics were tracked from the beginning. The NBA had its inaugural season in 1947, I believe. Rebounds weren't tracked until 1950. Steals, Blocks, Offensive Rebounds, & Defensive Rebounds started in the 1974 season. I'm not sure about Assists, however the definition of what constitutes one has changed since the 50's. And I'm fairly certain that the PER category didn't come about until the 2000's. Mostly, this is relevant to the "all time" placement of Jordan and James in all categories. Frankly, I'm surprised Hoops didn't make a note of this in the video or its description box.
    2. These are only statistics. And guess what, folks? Stats only tell, maybe, half the story. There is a lot of stuff that gets left out when you only talk about stats. Tons. I gather Hoops is well aware of this, and I know this is a "statistical" breakdown, however one should never leave out all relevant information when evaluating a player's worth, let alone making a comparison of two or more players and their careers.
It honestly sucks to be a sports fan and feel surrounded by a never ending amount of people who are obsessed with stats and think of nothing else. That kind of mentality should be privately reserved for drunken, loudmouths in bars.

Add in the 23 top players not even choosing Bron 2nd and you really begin to understand just how absurd this "who's the best" even is. Why does Jordan get the win with 0 "Championship Defeats" to LeBron's 6? 6 is better than 0. That's 6 times going to the finals versus 0 times for Jordan. You can't be penalized for winning additional playoff rounds. How does Jordan get the edge for LOSING EARLIER than LeBron? It's amazing how people cannot grasp this. Get a clue...
2 slam dunk titles for Jordan versus 0 for LeBron??? Yeah, THAT seems important. 1 NCAA title for Jordan versus 0 for LeBron who didn't play in the NCAA? Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

Hoopencyclopedia, MJ weighted 236 in the 1996-1997 season. Jumpmanhistory gave this proof on his site on Twitter, I literally have the picture saved on my phone, the data originally comes from a TV station(most probably WGN, station of the Chicago Bulls back then). So if MJ weighted 195 in his rookie season in 1984-1985 and in 1997-1998 he bulked unto 236 that means he bulk 3.40+ pounds every year on average and that most probably means he bulked unto 239.40+ pounds(let's rounded it to 240...) of pure muscle obviously in his last season with the Bulls in 1997-1998. With the Wizards he was easily over 250 pounds of pure muscle.
I'd like you to update the weight of MJ.

Some of these LeBron stats are wrong. His best finals 3pt % is 60, not 51.1. And he has the same career playoff 3pt % as Jordan. Also there is bias here with Jordan. With the career playoff 60+ and 50+ games, you could've broken that done with assists and rebounds also, which would have seen LeBron strangle-hold those statistics.

These stats are clearly catered for michael jordan there are countless breakdowns of scoring feats and also field goal attempts which is not really a good debating point. Also he didn't bother to include age related feats for lebron but was able to cram in age related records for jordan and he also conveniently pick the age of prime years for both when lebron has a longer prime and they didn't have the same age when they entered the league. The creator knows how much he left out for lebron when he decided not to include age related, team and franchise related stats and records. There are also many efficiency/shooting stats (like TS%, eFG, FTr, 3P) and countless passing and rebounding stats missing here where lebron triumphs and i can easily break them down into several categories to inflate it like what he did for mike. Again all the stats and record breakdowns here are specifically chosen for jordan. Ultimately jordan fans will always be jordan fans.
