I think above all, it was a display of dominance. Then a fully knowledgeable/ devastating emotional blow for both Casca and Guts. That was MOTIVATED by his perceived betrayals from Casca and Guts’ relationship, and his blaming of his own downward spiral on Guts.
A few other minor contributing factors would be how Griffith admits Guts was the only person to make him forget his dream. I think he assumed Casca was that person for Guts. And took her away from him in a way he’ll never forget.
I think he was almost OBLIGATED to commit the most heinous act possible in front of the other God-Hand members. To “commemorate” his transition into his new form. I’d be willing to bet it fell into “The law of Causality.” It was unavoidable.
Griffith is also getting what he thinks is revenge on Guts for his perceived slight in leaving the Band. And after blaming Guts for his downfall.
Furthermore, remember when Griffith had that strange moment of almost obsession when he beat Guts and “claimed” him. “I own you now” “You will fight for me, and I will choose where you die.” Griffith is a greedy and ambitious person past all the intellect, charm, and grace. And we occasionally see glimpses of that in moments of great stress or excitement. But I think this is where Griffith finally lets go of the facade and reveals his true colors. Greedily and obsessively taking Casca while also torturing Guts.
There’s so much more but this is all I got off the dome before I workout. Griffith was actively saying “I own you. Your mind, your body, your very soul. Even your woman. Is mine. You will always remember, and you will never think of anything else. When you die, I will be your reaper.”
I figured this is why Griffith raped her he’s jealous and wanted to prove that he could have his way and if you think about it guts took griffiths place he lead an army had casca etc guts took everything Griffith had unintentionally and Griffith let his rage hatred and jealousy get the best of him so he sacrifices everyone to try and gain back what he lost but little did Griffith know he lost everything because of his own doing

I thought Griffith was on some gay shit and wanted guts to himself and he got pissed when guts decided to leave, I also peeped how during that whole eclipse scene he was making eye contact with guts the whole time so maybe that was his revenge towards guts, I’m prolly wrong about some things but this is my opinion.
Yes it was revenge towards both Guts and Casca but Guts most importantly because Guts is the one guy he sees as an equal.
Griffith is a narcissistic magalomaniac. He sees himself as a king and now God and believes that others are his own property. That they should just follow and obey and worship him.
Guts dared escape his influence. He was suppose to be his property but he stood up against him and even showed him his not inferior by defeating him to escape his influence.
That made him despise Guts but also regognize him as the one man that can't be simply controlled and can stand as equal to him.
But after that Guts went a stage above. He saved him and looked at him with pitty.
He looked at him like he was above him and now was taking what used to be his own(Casca).
Seeing Casca being caring and adoring towards Guts like he was toward him while now only looking at him with pitty infuriated him to no end.
So he wanted to punish her for looking down on him and thinking she can escape him and wanted to hurt Guts like he hurt his pride and life while showing him that he can't just simply take what it was his(he also blames Guts for his torture since he acted out of character because he was infuriated for losing control over him).

I've always loved the allegory of Griffith, even before the Eclipse and his ascension to Femto, being seen as a God amongst men.
It's brilliantly done foreshadowing how Griffith was written that was right in front of our faces the whole time and yet none of us could have ever predicted what he'd end up doing as the one man who even believed himself to be a God of some kind.
And Miura does such a beautiful job handling how godly figures would view such a dark world like Berserk's, like how Griffith tells Guts straight up the next time he sees him as Femto that he's nothing more than an ant to him, nothing really changing after meeting with him again after his rebirth back into Griffith.
