Some potentially personal questions so fully get if you don't want to say!
But mind if I ask how big the property is (like acres/amount of an acre) or if you only know the front and back outdoor area's that's fine that's really what I'm interested in.
When you see numbers written on a property it's pretty hard to visualise so want to use it as a rough visual idea (I'm looking at getting a mortgage within the next 2yr if things keep going as they are and I don't care about a small house as long as I got enough outdoor space 😂).
Also out of curiosity what did you do before going full time on RUclips? (Not asking how much you got paid just the type of industry you were in).
Again fully get if you don't want to answer either or both questions!!!!
      Love what you do 😊

I’m a bit confused. Are the “moors” over in the UK like “peat bogs” (where they find dead, preserved people?) or are they just undeveloped, prairie-type, upland situations? Here in the NE US “moors” are generally boggy wetlands, not quite swamps but large meadows with vernal pools.

If it happens, it will be a very long project. I was speaking with Tanner from Serpa Design at aquashella about getting pros in to do it but would really like to do it myself....with zero experience. He even agreed, I'll get the most out of it by far doing it myself...but will take a LOT longer. But I don't mind that. Learn as I go.

@@MDFishTanks Its pretty straight forward tbh. Me and my friend got it done in less than a week besides the digging which took about 2 days. With a cheap laser level meter and placing flat stone tiles and sand/soil, we got the edge to be very flat and even. One corner away from the house should be lower to allow the water to overflow when its raining. Of course geography matters, we couldnt dig as deep as we wanted because we hit bedrock about a meter down. Fun and exhausting and now we have a pond about 12x8m.

I'd love to see most of that backyard turned into a permaculture garden. ^^
An herb spiral right off the deck would be lovely & the bottom section would tie into a small pond section for water herbs & fish.
If you have the garden section closer to the house, it'll be easier to maintain & collect from daily. Put the boys to work learning how to grow & maintain things to live off of as well as having a sports area.

Love your set up but there are definitely more stocking options if you are willing to winter it indoors . After visiting Thailand and seeing massive plant pots filled with plants and guppies ,then every ditch filled with wild guppies I decided to set up my own . I'm Scotland based so MUCH cooler and keep my guppies outside for half the year almost, moving them into the garden room when it started to get cooler . They are surprisingly hardly over the 4/5 years I've had it only lost a few to old age . It's a 900mm across terracotta pot with a huge bunch of lillie's and no filter, probably around 50 guppies in there just now . The population is self regulating , as the numbers get low more young survive . They also get a little bigger outside for some reason

Also a tip I had to learn the hard way, figure out what you will do with the fish in winter. Spoiler, they didn't hibernate like I was told so had to move the next fish into the house the next winter.

MD three things, firstly beautiful house. I think most of us are thinking you or Kate should do a finance video now XD but lastly you should treat your decking. Looks ATM to be a raw finish which will suffer in the long term. If you leave it unfinished it looks nicer and brighter but will crack more easily with heat exposure and rain.

The Sweet flag iris (original “fleur de lis”) enjoy having “wet feet.” You might be able to grow a dwarf waterlily in that size pond but most require a much larger water surface. They also dislike turbulent water so a definite “no” with that filter. Parrot feathers are nice grown immersed or emersed and will cascade over the edge. I once grew a Chwan Basu (Sacred Lotus) in a container that size on a similar deck in the middle of NYC.

You could also have added chinese danios (white clouds) and/or paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis), which do well in an outdoor pond and you have enough space to let them overwinter. Paradise fishing in an outdoor pond is truly one of the coolest things I have ever done in this area.

The Import of Live Fish Act (ILFA) in the UK only allows Japanese rice fish, also known as Oryzias species or medaka, to be sold for indoor aquariums. Keeping them in outdoor ponds or barrels could breach the terms of the ILFA license and cause an invasive risk if they escaped into UK waterways. This is because they can tolerate low temperatures and survive.

Bog filter is correct. Here in Australia I’ve found Ozponds very useful for pond and bog filter information and inspiration. We’re also able to stock some small native fish in our ponds too: pacific blue eyes, some of the rainbows... I wonder whether there’s any suitable local fish in the UK? I can think of a rewilding channel in the UK too who might be able to suggest some landscaping that would help you to get the maximum value from your pond, as having friendly habitat around it can increase the number of species that can use it. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your pond adventures!

Interesting, but looks really odd... the big grey plastic bucket look is an eye sore for me. Maybe buried until the top frame in a nice space surrounded by plants would look ok...not sure of it... This one didn't do it for me

What's the reason you can't keep ricefish outside in the UK? We keep them outside here in the Netherlands. Thought our climates were quite similar

    • @Jwonni1
      @Jwonni1 3 месяца назад

      Climate is fine
It because they might escape and invade our water, you know like albino creatures do 🙄 bright white animals are spotted and eaten quickly so platinum medaka have no chance of being invasive but we are ruled by pencil pushers

I think his interests lie more in aqua- scaping than outdoor gardening. They’re two completely different specialties which sometimes overlap, but not always. It also looks like a relatively new housing development, so there’s that.

Rice fish do better outside they are bred to be viewed from the top just like koi are and they also survive the winter outside I’ve been breeding them for years and they also multiply like crazy when outside

You could try and make a small wildlife pond by the bigger fish pond as a lot of wildlife don’t like fish.

I'm thinking about getting something similar to this pond, basically build one myself from pots, etc. However my question is as I live in similar climate to you (Netherlands) how should I go about it when winter hits? Should I drain in completely? Will I have to plant new plants after winter?
