Same. I played this for a gf and when it was over, I talked about how it's this beautiful, wordless evocation of the joy of life turning to grief and anger and "raging against the dying of the light" before finally falling into acceptance and drifting peacefully into the hereafter. I talked about how, even without words, each stage was so clear and apparent and gorgeously communicated that it gave me chills and tears and made me feel in touch with something greater, something profound. The girl got mad and went on a whole diatribe about how much she hates people trying to find meaning in music, books, movies, etc. and that artists should just say what they mean. She and I don't talk anymore. Pink Floyd, on the other hand, is still very much in my life. I definitely made the right choice.
@@plstrom I have been listening to this since the album came out, because I am old. This number still brings tears to my eyes. Here is Clare Torry herself talking about how a random session she was called to became one of the greatest vocal performances in rock history. ruclips.net/video/mIW7xZSlZoM/видео.html
Clare Torry's wordless vocals, are nothing short of an actual religious experience. After 40 years of listening to 'Great Gig In The Sky', I still get goosebumps. So awesome.
It is Claire Tory she came into the studio and they told her only that she was too sing but had no lyrics and she apparently did it in one take the lady is awesome!
Sean Slaughter Claire was told no lyrics and that it was about death. She did it in 2.5 takes and was exhausted. Ended up getting credit for writing eventually and got some coin.
be very careful. The Pink is not to be taken lightly- Led Zepplin right after or b-4 will totally mess with your head, after that anything from the 60s to the middle 80s will do.
The song is about dying and the stages of grief. Clare knocked it out of the park. The song Time comes before it and is about your life passing so quickly, then comes Great Gig about death.
I have loved every day of my life (almost) but I still very much miss My Dad who passed on the 11th April,1971 and My Darling Angelic Mum who passed on 25th Mat,1996....:)
Brian Jones I thought it was about this too, the agony of death, the acceptance and the giving in to it. I did think it would be funny to do a mash up of the song with the old western movies where the cowboy has the long, drawn out, dramatic death scene. 😂
@@cherylwoodward I put this on while having a prolonged heart attack last year, but I made it through, but it gave me a understanding of my life I never had before.
Loved your reaction, Claire Torry is the singer, a petite white woman from England. She was only paid a very small amount of money to do this, but she ended up getting a whole lot more because Pink Floyd gave her no lyrics, no instructions other than sing along to the music. So in essence she wrote the lyrics to this song, and ended up getting writers royalties for The Great Gig In The Sky. I have noticed a lot of reactors who listen to this without listening to "Time/Breathe Reprise" first are really confused about the lack of lyrics and what the song means. You have to understand, Dark Side of the Moon is a concept album, each song flows into the next, so the whole album is meant to be heard in one sitting. If you listen closely to the "Time" lyrics, they are talking about being older, shorter of breath & one day closer to death. "Breathe Reprise" talks about the tolling of the iron bell, which means in a lot of cultures, someone has passed away. "The Great Gig In the Sky" in my opinion has three stages 1. raging against dying 2. acceptance and 3. peace. So anyways, sometime you need to just sit down, put your headphones on and listen to the whole Dark Side of the Moon album at one time. Actually, Wish You Were Here, The Wall & Animals are also concept albums, and meant to be listened to from beginning to end in one sitting. I hope you enjoy your journey into the genius that is Pink Floyd. May I also suggest that you listen to at least two songs from the Pink Floyd Live at Pulse HD concert The Division Bell Tour 1994. "Comfortably Numb" from The Wall, do this after you have done the complete album, and "High Hopes" from the Momentary Lapse of Reason album.
All glory to backup singers, the unspoken heroes of so many bands and recordings, the ones never making into the credits and to big fame, but being instrumental in making or breaking whole songs and albums… So many bands, and we all, owe them 💛🙏💛

This will be my funeralsong as it was and will be for so many people..
The vocal solo is done by Claire Torry (a woman) and the message is to portray the 7 emotions of grief or the feelings involved before you die. Shock or Disbelief, denial, anger, bargaining, guilt, depression and acceptance. Knowing this, listen to the song and you can understand how her voice flows beautifully between every emotion.
This is probably the greatest present I have ever received in my life. When I am feeling sad, I watch this and it makes me happy. Thank you so so so much for this. You have no idea what this meant to me.❤️
Listening to this out of context with the other songs is like opening up the middle of a book and reading a random chapter.....Go back ..turn the lights down lay back and give your self 43:00 minutes to listen to the whole album....you won't be disappointed!!
Hahaha, I knew you'd flip out over this one man! Pink Floyd are 4 dudes, but the vocal on this song is by a guest singer, a British white woman, Claire Tory. This is the album studio recording, and they only recorded 2 takes, this is the 2nd one. Pink Floyd are known for their instrumental prowess, I personally consider the live performance of 'Comfortably Numb' from 1994 Earl's Court in London to be their best performance - the guitar solo is like 3 minutes longer than the studio version, and it's just indescribable. The stage and stadium lighting visuals are also absolutely amazing.
C'mon guys. Let's ease him into this. Studio version first. He'll take the hook and then we can set it on the live version. We must carefully welcome him to the machine. (evil chuckle)
PINK FLOYD, "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY" Singer Claire Torry, was brought in to improvise her voice to go with this piano melody, to end side one of the Iconic Album "Dark Side of the Moon." By Album Producer Alan Parsons. She brought in her vocal sounds of this person's final moments as she went through the emotions of losing they're life. After the screaming of Fear, Confusion, Depression, memory of Family, and Friends. Quieting to the realization of acceptance that this is it, and finally her earthly voice turns into the echoing as her soul departs from her body as the dead sound of silence following the last piano chord.
A cute little blond white girl. She was invited to the recording session by her boyfriend I think. Pink Floyd wanted to add some vocals to the track....but weren't exactly sure what they wanted. There were NO lyrics, and they asked her to just improvise. She did this in 2 & 1/2 takes. They offered her a Heineken beer.....and she left after that. They didn't tell her if they liked it or not. She figured that it was just an experiment & that THAT would be the end of it...LOL. A few weeks later, she saw the album in the window of a record shop.....and saw her name listed as the vocalist on that song. The rest is history.

My favourite part of this incredible song, by far is 4:14, Torry is singing the sound of a human souls acceptance of death and she does it in a 3D upward spiral, I have no idea if I'll ever hear anything as good as that in my life again. It's certainly not something that could have been rehearsed, just one of those rare moments in human history caught on tape. Incredible.
You just got a new sub! Loved this video man. One of my fav vocal songs out there. The way you appreciate it is amazing, singing with it and enjoying it
In that first part she sounds a little discordant/out of control. She's depicting the fear, frustration of death, and literally dying. Then...acceptance. Pure magic.
The ultimate Pink Floyd song for you to hear and react to is Comfortably Numb (pulse concert performance). It has arguably one of the all time best guitar solos ever performed live as well as one of the most amazing stage/light shows you will ever see.
Claire Tory broke my heart with this in 1972 and I never recovered. Dark side of he Moon and Wish You Were Here are the two albums that should be listened to from end to end together to get the full concept of that period of Pink Floyd from '72 to '75. The two albums together read like a book. For a taste, try ''Time'', ''Shine on you crazy diamond (parts 1-9)'' , ''Us and Them'' and ''Have a Cigar''.
I was not able to watch this year on my birthday. But I have to tell you that what you did for me was one of the most special things for a birthday that I have ever had! Love you so dearly for this.❤
I’ve never seen a musician, especially a vocalist, that doesn’t run the gamut of amazed to awed to angry and back. It is an astonishing piece of music.
Clare Torry got a telephone call one day; a producer was recording an album, he remembered hearing her voice on a knock-off record, and he wanted her that voice for this record he was working on. She was quite busy, told him she'd not be able to do it until Sunday after next, in the afternoon. He was agreeable, she showed up, found it was a rather unconventional type of singing but she gave it a shot. And she nailed it on her first take.* *starting at about 1:09 The producer was Alan Parsons, the album was Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" which was being recorded at Abbey Road Studio. She sang her bit, thought it was quite a lark, walked on out the door. The song in context of the album " Dark Side of the Moon " is about the journey into the afterlife. Do yourself a favour and listen to the album in one sitting. It is about 45 minutes long but quite a journey in itself . You must listen with HEADPHONES. , no headphones is not an option. Love your reactions by the way.
No, she tried the first take with words like, "Baby, baby", etc. They stopped her and said, no start again. Then this came out the next take! She later claimed she deserved better royalties. And she is white. Love how this so v blows people away! 😂
Please listen to "Dark side of the Moon... BUT... Then listen to "Animals" by Pink Floyd... And tell me with a straight face Animals isn't a better album. I would suggest "Dogs" off that album to begin with.
Yours is one of my favorite reactions to this song...!! I have been listening to this song and Pink Floyd for 50 years and I am so pleased that you have captured on video the reaction I felt when I first heard this song so long ago... trust me this song does not EVER get old or played out even 50 years later... GODs blessings to you my friend!!!!
Death is not about moving on, it’s about moving forward in the spirit of your loved one. I know, my beautiful husband died from a fall 9 months ago and the grief is U.N.bearable at times, but I encounter a heavenly peace when I know he’s with me.
Don't forget the beginning of the song, where it's the joy and energy of life. I've always loved that it starts there before the realization of death takes hold and you move into anger and grief before finally accepting and drifting peacefully away. It's a perfect, beautiful, wordless, heartbreaking, spiritual, strangely comforting summary of the human experience. Less a song and more a gorgeous piece of art truly using the voice as an instrument rather than just a vehicle for lyrics. Also, the fact that her vocal is "soul music" in both senses of the phrase shouldn't be lost on anybody.
Lots of confusion and emotional release relating to this reaction. Kind of like when all of us older folk first heard this performance when this album was released almost 50 years ago. Clare Torry...OMG. The right session singer...in a weird moment...and crushing it...in is maybe what should be considered an "out of body" experience. Thus...the definition of this song. Clare....you will always have a place in my heart, Luv. You've been with me since I first heard you in 78'.
Yes my man that is a reaction with the soul, and it is exactly what happened to me, I did not know what else to scream inside, come on miss, take it out !!
YES!! I have a ton of respect any person who points out the bass part of a song first. The bass in this song is perfect in its simplicity. Well done, sir!!
You have 2 do TIME lyric video so you can grasp the entire song. They're an experience that I think everyone needs to see for themselves..this song follows TIME on the album and the entire album Dark Side of the Moon is supposed to be listened to as a whole..
Hey Buddy. Yes. Bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are so widely loved for a reason. They really are the pinnacle of their craft. Definitely check out more Floyd. And good news...... for whatever reason, Floyd isn't blocked as often as lots of other bands here on youtube.
I keep coming back to this because you have no idea what this meant to me! This makes me happy when I feel sad. THANK YOU for making me feel like I matter!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Claire Torry was asked to come into the studio and 'just sing'. This was the result. There are no lyrics. You can't live on this planet without hearing Pink Floyd. Welcome to the club! :) x
The core Pink Floyd musicians are 4 guys. Dark Side of the Moon was made in 1973. They had a female singer named Clare Torry to do the vocalizing in Great Gig in the Sky.
I'm late to this party, but that shocked look on your face in the first couple of minutes was everything 😂😂❤ I've rewatched it like 5 times. Love your reactions and how much you feel it. You are 💯real. I'm not that expressive, but watching your reactions is how I feel inside about alot of this music.
There is no instrument that can touch the human voice. I’ve played the keys most of my life because I can’t sing. I’m jealous forever, because I cannot express myself like this. Yet, its so beautiful, that I can’t be mad. I was 17 the first time I heard this in the 90’s. I wanted to cry, but was with my boys. It took my breath away, literally. That part where she is screaming like a chimpanzee.....its so primal and visceral, like the way a mother screams when her child is being harmed. This song traverses the stages of grief, but its the grief of one’s own impending death. We fight it.....fight it like nothing else, but ultimately we all know.....it is a battle that ALL have lost, so acceptance has to come.
I've seen every Pink Floyd reactor on RUclips and this was one of the most fluid, natural, and entertaining reactions I've ever seen. Great job, man. subbed. A little background info on the Pink Floyd, the group consisted of four men at this point in their career. David Gilmour - vocals, guitars. Roger Waters - vocals, bass. Richard Wright - Keyboards, synths, occasional vocals. Nick Mason - drums. The voice you heard on this gem was a white female session singer named Clare Torry. As you can hear, she knocked it out of the park. Welcome to the Pink Floyd rabbit hole, man. It's an epic journey that will change you for the better as far as enrichment goes.
A tiny white girl ! Welcome to Pink Floyd my friend, pink makes concept albums which means the whole album tells one story this album is about life from beginning to end one song plays right into the next seamlessly do yourself a favor and listen to the whole album in one shot. i was at a pink Floyd concert years ago and the speakers exploded on stage when the female vocalist hit her high note during this song and everyone thought it was a firework show. It was one best concert i ever went to
What you just heard, is (an amazing) a vocal interpretation of grief, pain, sorrow and enlightenment all in one, there are no words for that, just emotions. Claire Tory did one hell of a performance on this song, and where she did this alone in the studio, they need 3 singers on stage to do this live. One of many masterpieces by Pink Floyd, there is a lot, whole lot to explore here :) Thnx for the great reaction video :D

The ultimate Pink Floyd song for you to hear and react to is Comfortably Numb (pulse concert performance). It has arguably one of the all time best guitar solos ever performed live as well as one of the most amazing stage/light shows you will ever see.
4 years in..and this is still by far my favorite reaction video of urs..and u have many many good ones my friend. ❤️💯
Love you so dearly for this.❤
Comfortably numb live at pulse game changing solo the last 4 minutes
I’ve never seen a musician, especially a vocalist, that doesn’t run the gamut of amazed to awed to angry and back.
It is an astonishing piece of music.
Clare Torry got a telephone call one day; a producer was recording an album, he remembered hearing her voice on a knock-off record, and he wanted her that voice for this record he was working on. She was quite busy, told him she'd not be able to do it until Sunday after next, in the afternoon. He was agreeable, she showed up, found it was a rather unconventional type of singing but she gave it a shot. And she nailed it on her first take.*
*starting at about 1:09
The producer was Alan Parsons, the album was Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" which was being recorded at Abbey Road Studio.
@@kathynicholson103 I agree. I just tried to give a quick run down so he can research a bit more on the story.
@@alfredristan3445 yes, an incredible story!
The 3 stages of death; anger, acceptance, moving on. The great Clare Torry. She was one of the back up singers.
No, she wasn't one of the backup singers. She just did this track.
Perfect description of the song :)
Clare was a session singer, just brought in for that track.
@@ladyjane8855 I think you hear her on about half of the songs on DSotM.
Floyd fan! 😁👍 she was a guest singer!
Meaningful soul without words. It's the beauty of it.
Pink Floyd in headphones, this is going to be a good reaction..
When you picked Great Gig. All Floyd fans say welcome! Keep on the journey our friend. it’s worth the trip. ❤️
PLEASE listen to Stargazer by Rainbow. The singer's voice will blow you away!
A powerful epic of a song. A must.
Absolutely my favorite Pink Floyd song. ❤️
Welcome to Pink Floyd dude, symphony of my youth.
Yes my man that is a reaction with the soul, and it is exactly what happened to me, I did not know what else to scream inside, come on miss, take it out !!
You will trip with Deep Purple "Child in time". Great reaction btw.
Best reaction I ever saw too this song. Warmed up my soul.
Her name is Clare Torrey. She is a tiny white English woman with the voice of a Goddess.
Welcome to the Floyd! Glad I got to see them live😀 Your journey starts here!
Him:
Is that a guy?
Me:
Wtf..
No words pronounced and yet so much was said.... What a masterpiece!
You'll love Pink Floyd "Animals"
Who else is having convulsions because he listened to this without listening to 'Time' first?
I keep coming back to this because you have no idea what this meant to me! This makes me happy when I feel sad. THANK YOU for making me feel like I matter!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
No it's not she's a white lady you can Google her. She is not a part of the band. She was brought in to do this song. RUclips Claire Torrey
The picture is of women with their album covers painted on their backs.
It's the Pink Floyd back catalog..
Who knew piano and slide guitar could make such a gorgeous coupling. Genius!
Try Deep Purple Sweet Child in Time. Another banger
I'm late to this party, but that shocked look on your face in the first couple of minutes was everything 😂😂❤
I've rewatched it like 5 times. Love your reactions and how much you feel it. You are 💯real. I'm not that expressive, but watching your reactions is how I feel inside about alot of this music.
Ladies and gentlemen, Claire Torry. 22 year old white British girl. Done in 2 takes.
We fight it.....fight it like nothing else, but ultimately we all know.....it is a battle that ALL have lost, so acceptance has to come.
as far as I know the band ask Claire Tory to use her voice as an instrument.
She was just told "no words." SHE said the idea came to her to be an instrument as a way to approach the song.
Haha thank you man I appreciate that :)
Since the whole album is a theme, you really should listen to "Time" right before it at least.
A tiny white girl ! Welcome to Pink Floyd my friend, pink makes concept albums which means the whole album tells one story this album is about life from beginning to end one song plays right into the next seamlessly do yourself a favor and listen to the whole album in one shot. I'm 57 and been a fan since I was 12 and I still listen to these albums all the time they never get old. Loved the reaction and can't believe you started with this track lol
Pink all male band and all the girls at the very end are models and the pics on their backs are album covers...♡
Can we get some Hey You next
One of the most beautiful pieces of music of all time!
Pink Floyd is not women. Soylent green is people.
Just push the button, Frank!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
i was at a pink Floyd concert years ago and the speakers exploded on stage when the female vocalist hit her high note during this song and everyone thought it was a firework show. It was one best concert i ever went to
Robert plant could hit notes like that but this is deffinately a lady.
This is a great great song
It's a vocal masterpiece! ☮️
I imagine the stages of grief while she sings....denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance...she sang it...and it's amazing
Best reaction lol melted your face right off....was glorious!
From the greatest album by the greatest band ever! You must listen to the whole album!
Pink Floyd. They are THE masters of sound.
That was a very natural impressive reaction you gave to that song!
Pink Floyd..Comfortably Numb live from the Pulse concert...Epic guitar solo..Awesome stage affects. You will not be disappointed.
That bass bro is a memoribilia of relics
I want this played at my funeral. thank u Clare Torry.
One of many masterpieces by Pink Floyd, there is a lot, whole lot to explore here :)
Thnx for the great reaction video :D
This as got to be the best reaction to pink Floyd that I have ever seen good on you man
