- The Steam Deck has been out for a while and has proven itself to be a worth portable solution for PC gaming. Though its 1280 x 800 pixel display works well enough and helps keep performance and power consumption well balanced, one might still crave a truly HD display. Luckily, DeckHD is just the solution such gamers have been waiting for. Is the DeckHD display upgrade for the Steam Deck worth it? Boasting a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution and a higher 87% sRGB color accuracy over the stock Steam Deck display, Seth Macy takes you through the highs and lows of installing the new DeckHD display on his personal Steam Deck and lets you know whether or not diving in will be worth the splash.

We don't need increased resolution we want OLED
Hdr
Why not both ?
@@bendover4952bro your gonna make the steam deck run worse at 1200p, maybe when they have a hardware revision.
@@bendover4952 worse battery life and worse performance?
Oled and no bezels, so larger screen. Can probably fit an 8" in there if you remove the bezels
Original screen is optimal for GPU, but hey... we all love to see experimentation.
So, nice work dude. 👍
yeah dude
🤜🏻🤛🏻

Only the resolution and size. The screen quality is terrible. 67% of sRGB is bad, that's pre HDTV days. Even the regular switch has a 100% sRGB range. And this doesn't even affect battery life, valve just used a cheap screen to save some money.
That’s only for AAA games. Being able to play indie games or older AAA games at HD is definitely a benefit
My biggest concerns would be battery life and loudness. 1200p is pushing the APU way harder than 800p. From my experience with the ROG Ally and Steam Deck, I'd take a 800p-screen with VRR (and games locked to 40/60 fps) over a bump in resolution any given day.
its ok you can plug it in a socket and charge it up
Yeah, they should have increased the screen size and sRGB range. 67% is really bad, 87% is ok. The Lenovo Legion Go is 93% of DCI, which is even more color than sRGB.
@@BurritoKingdom what about fsr?
@@plnkowhat about it?
Line doubled 960x600p looks way way better than native 1200x800p and you actually get 30% higher FPS even though it looks higher resolution and fidelity, pretty incredible huh.
You can enable high resolutions in any game by going to the cog wheel button on the Gaming Mode for the said game then set custom resolution to whatever, check the "Set resolution for internal and external display", if the checkbox is not there, go back out and back in.
You shouldn't have to play in Desktop mode to get access to higher resolutions, just use the ≡ button when you have the game selected in the Steam OS, go into properties > general and change the resolution from default to whatever resolution you want
I'm surprised IGN is even talking about the Steam Deck at all. Let alone the aftermarket for the Deck.
Hopefully Valve won't make that mistake and will instead give us an improved performance and battery life in the next iteration
Yeah
It’s happening
LETS GO
Now if only there was an OLED screen that could drop in that is actually just the same resolution as the deck.
Oled steam deck
@@spacemacaw not swappable from initial reports
You can access the higher resolution in the normal gaming mode. You have to manually enable it in the steam settings for each game before launching them.
Yes but then it saves that setting - so it's a one-off
The vibrant deck plugin is a godsend for the og screen in terms of color. Doesnt fix color accuracy, but can at least prevent the games from looking super washed out.
@@Generic_RUclips_Username_Sweet! Thanks Gaben!
@@Generic_RUclips_Username_The update has been supposedly around the corner since march
Who cares about color accuracy? You’re not color grading on a steam deck.
@@hypnotico7051 You don't color grade while watching tv or videos on your phone but you still appreciate the fact that whatever you're looking at isn't washed out and gray, don't you?
@@David-ki2xt we both know the default steam deck screen is not that wonky.
You should be able to change game resolution threw the property's of each game in game mode. you have to do it for each title.
This remembers the Game boy era and all those crazy accesories
Did you have FSR turned on? Presumable you should be able to get similar results to using an external display and FSR for upscaling.
Would be nice to see two working side by side. I’m back and forth if this is worthy 😂
How do you use the old screen once you remove it? Wouldn't wanna junk it.
Did you need to use a heat gun to help remove the Lcd screen?
My perorder waitlist deckhd just arrived. Going to install it along with some gulikit hall effect joysticks and the jsaux aluminum backplate that drops temps by 10c. Fully upgraded steam deck.
Go ahead and get ptm7950 instead of regular thermal paste while you're at it.
Should have been OLED 800p. Dont need 1080p for this apu
So many people going on about an oled screen. Valve has already came out and said it isn't possible to have an oled panel. If you wanna know the reason why just google it.
„Maintained a playable framerate“
It’s clearly running far below 30 dude.
Love the chained echoes love!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
1:44 What about an Allen wrench and an anti-static bracelet?
We want oled no bezel. More resolution is dumb on the steam deck.
It still makes more sense to wait for the next generation so that the battery can actually take the hit from the processor and screen.
I'd get a SD2 instead. I'm fine with my og SteamDeck
The contrast is basically the same if not slightly worse on the DeckHD screen. Also it's about 100 nits darker placing it about the 75% mark of the stock screens brightness.
I’m not tryna mess with the bios , giving access to the bios gives open access to destroy my entire deck at will
Resolution doesn't matter for me in handheld, all that matters is Framerate and Gameplay.
Why would you want to hurt battery life more on a device that has crappy battery life to begin with?
For better visuals. Why else?
Pass. But If they come out with a 800p OLED version, now that's something I'll consider fiddling with.
As an owner of the company's previous product (the FxTec Pro1-X), I'm steering clear of this.
Lenovo Legion Go looks better than Steamdeck or Rog Ally.
it’s not tho but it’s a great step forward now Valve will possibly do the same
hopefully there will be a battery mod for consumers soon.
It's actually pretty cool to do an upgrade like this instead of buying a new system
An OLED-screen with HDR would do the trick for me. But to be honest, starting games from Desktop mode is the real dealbreaker for me. Thanks for sharing. 😀
You don't have to.
LETS GO!
Research is hard.
@@jamesbaxter9975 Reading is harder! This reaction was way before the release of the OLED. 😂😂🤣🤣
I'm waiting for the Legion Go
Increased resolution is a huge W when it comes to watching videos and movies on the Deck
No. It's not.
For two reasons:
1. It is still a LCD
2. The screen size is the same (7 inches) with huge black borders all around the display.
Bummer
If base one is not worth it, that makes upgrade not worth as well.
Some people buy the base model to save some money by upgrading some of the components themselves.
Is the bezel any better?
No.
We’re better off with a VRR screen upgrade
FYI big miss here is he doesn’t mention the bios stuff..
So make sure you know about that stuff before you buy this.
I’d love an OLED screen over a higher res one. While a higher res may sound better, performance takes a hit like you mentioned. OLED screens don’t require extra horsepower, and can possibly save battery due to actually cutting the pixels off in black areas.
1200p on a screen this small is an idiotic waste of GPU resources and, more importantly, power budget. Even if some games can run at this res, it guarantees a much shorter battery life. A dumb trade-off for a barely noticeable difference.
What we really want is bigger screen size same resolution and OLED screen. Id do that replacement for sure not this.
Ill get a steam deck 2 with an oled screen.
I'd rather a screen that shrinks the bezels for a bit more real estate and OLED to boot...
The performance tradeoff for a higher rez screen isn't worth it, imo. Also, it would've been better if they offered an OLED display as a replacement instead of LCD.
When fsr 3 drops. The steam deck will be able to handle that resolution.
Follow extreme rates tear down of their shell.. you dno’t have to remove thermal paste or anything. Keep majority of the stuff intact.
This is a dictionary definition example of leaving well-enough alone.
All valve need to do for a deck 2 for my money is give me an 800p OLED screen with better battery life and I'm sold.
You would think you would do comparison videos.
Any differences with the battery?
The new screen uses between 0.5-1 watt more power to run.
Now if they would only come out with an OLED version of this, but we may not see one anytime soon since valve wants you to actually buy an entirely new steam deck if you want OLED.
Christmas lights, the discount RGB option
deff not worth it, it came with the screen it has for a reason
Just buy the ally, only 1080 but beautiful. Steam deck plus new screen + risk costs more than ally.
Will this void warranty
Yes
No.
Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act
Would only ever think about the idea if there was Bezel-less OLED screen or if it was just Broken lmao
Just go with oled screens lcd is fine but idk
The best way to justify a screen upgrade is if you also plan on using one of the custom Deck shell replacements. All the other parts in the Deck are fairly easy to remove, removing the original screen is the hardest part. But with a shell replacement, you basically skip the toughest part of the entire install process.
That would be nice, but you can't skip the screen removal even with a new shell. There are screws under the screen that need to be removed in order to get the last board out of the deck. Therefore you have to remove the screen even with a new shell.
You don't, you have to remove the screen. There is metal plate you need and the screws for it are under the screen
Battery life, performance and thermals are most certainly going to take a hit. Extra pixels to drive will have a detrimental effect.
The need for continued firmware support and risk that any given update renders it inoperable (if temporarily) is uh not ideal
You can still use it on an external display.
@@eternalbeing3339If you're only going to use it on an external display, why would you upgrade the screen in the first place.
900p OLED with a smaller bezel.
Just wait for steam deck 2 pass on this!
FSR from a better base resolution. That's the biggest detail everyone is missing out. Duh!
the increased resolution is going to hurt battery...
You can't have less than 87 minutes of battery life
7 inch is not that big looking at the steam deck lets be honest.
Such a minimal increase in resolution. No.
Should have came out with an OLED kit at the same res.
If your worried about installing it yourself take it to a cell phone or tablet repair shop they will do it for a fair price
To me resolution not really needed. What we need is OLED.
Less than 90% sRGB isn’t enough for today’s market.
Always have an old tablet handy for instructions, using a phone for a project this involved is silly. Who throws out thermal paste? It doesn't expire (had the same tube for over a decade), and I've had to make my own heat shielding/venting/fan systems for older electronics that have overheating components. Not to mention you might have to redo a friend/relative's botched job on their CPU, or if a vacuum bag exploded in a tower and you gotta redo EVERYTHING.
Sorry to tell you this but thermal paste sure does expire.
@@randysalsman6992 Arctic lasts a decade+. Cap on, upright, in a bag/container (desiccant optional), cool dry area. The manufacturer even says 8 years.
No. The default screen is fine, upgrading it just makes the battery life as pathetic as all the other handhelds.
dude switched out a LCD for another LCD 🤦♂️the steam deck 2 needs a slide-out screen OLED panel
Too mush work ill stick with the stock
If a upgrade was a downgrade this would be it.
Bro this guy is a rookie. All those electronics in your man cave and no thermal paste? Clearly the kind of guy that asks someone else to fix their stuff.
Yeah that might be green screen.
Before watching the video, it's not worth it.
I’d say it’s worth it if you break your original screen
is it worth the upgrade
Short answer: No
Vibrantdeck helps
Performance and battery will tank
Remember when people were complaining the Switch screen wasn't 1440p-4K?
They really didn't need to increase the resolution, it's not what's most needed, increased refresh rate is way more necessary, 120hz or faster will enable the all important black frame insertion, this is vital for a display used for gaming on, it upgrades the motion resolution massively to almost 1:1, as it is the Steamdeck can barely manage 300 TVL of resolution in motion, that's not even half of its advertised resolution.
Half of what you've written doesn't make any sense.
We need eGPU support for Deck.
Already exists, just a little bit of work to get running correctly
Funny but credible sounding guy, nice video 😄
It doesn't make any sense
either that new screen has washed up quality or your camera need an upgrade. it look worse.
Ofcourse its not, its a handheld semi small screen
OLED will most likely never happen. For those of you who are curious. Even if the pinout on the ribbon cable were the same the different screen technology would require totally different signals. There would need to be a custom chip that converts everything. It's possible, but someone would have to design this chip.
The vita can do it. Steam deck will one day.
@@eternalbeing3339The vita was designed with that goal, current steamdecks probably won't ever be able to.
This comment aged well
1200p, as if the Steam Deck can even run anything above 800p, talk about pointless.
Not pointless. Emulated games can run it and having better colors in others.
Ummm battery life?
20% less at 1200 - about the same at 800
