The Steam Deck LCD Is Still Absolutely Amazing | Steam Deck in 2024? [Long Term Review]

  • No one's really talking about the OG Steam Deck nowadays and, well, it's easy to understand why - newer and more powerful devices have flooded the market. That, however, is one heck of a shame. Despite its few shortcomings, it's still one of the best handheld gaming PCs on the market, and is definitely worth buying in 2024, especially at its current price (be it used, new, or even refurbished).

      Switch games are insanely optimized for the switch's specific hardware. The steam deck simply runs PC games, which aren't optimized for the steam deck's specific hardware. It will get outdated way more quickly than the switch.

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  16 дней назад +1

      @bj0urne plus it didn't sell a bajillion units like the Switch did so there's less of an incentive.

      @ValentinoNicko 14 дней назад +2

      @@bj0urne Nah, lots of third party game has held off by switch hardware, maybe some select flagship like Zelda and Mario is super optimized (And not on the switch side, but more on the developer side make it super optimal). You can optimize but you can't cheat specs.
      Also with same argument, you can also optimize game running on deck with various mod and settings, you actually have more control, so saying it will outdated quickly is just not correct IMO.

    I have both LCD and OLED. Like CGD says in the video, once you adjust the colour temperature on the deck either with the in-built adjuster or VibrantDeck plugin through Decky Loader (if you can still get it) the display actually looks great. The one thing about the old deck is the buttons sit more flush and don't rattle as much as my OLED buttons. Apparently they made the OLED deck buttons ever so slightly smaller to mitigate them from getting stuck. Anyway, I still use my old LCD model and I give it to my friends to play so we can play some couch co-op when they stay over at my place.

Rather than spend the money on a "more powerful" gaming PC I chose to compliment my OG Steam Deck with an, Analogue Pocket and a Switch OLED. These 3 devices complement each other well and I really don't feel like I am missing out in the portable gaming department plus all can be docked to my TV. What a time to be a gamer! @CGD.Studio  3 месяца назад +1

      Hey friend, an OLED vs. LCD video is planned, most likely for August! 😁 That's been in the works for a while. As for optimizations, there's really no reason for me to tackle such a video because shooting and lighting and editing takes up way too much time, and RUclips is already littered with similar videos. And this is still an incredibly small channel so if the odds of that video not performing well are high, then it's just not worth the effort (sadly).
      As for Windows-related optimizations, there really aren't any big ones that come to mind. You just download a few third-party apps and, potentially, use a few tools to de-bloat Windows 11 and you're good to go. 😅 Surprisingly simple and straightforward. Everything just works and, in some cases, it works a lot better and more seamlessly than on actual, "standard" Windows-based handhelds. Not sure why, probably has something to do with Valve's drivers and firmware. If you want I can type out what I'm using once I get back home. 🙌

    Folks, please stop putting Windows on your Steam Deck. While I get the preception that people want Windows on it for sake of Anti-cheat MP games; you have a laptop/desktop for that. The Steam Deck's greater performance _comes from the fact it uses _*_Linux._* You're also missing out on taking advantage of the amazing further Linux firmware and hardware performance overhead that Valve and AMD has worked so hard on.
    At the end of the day of course, I'm not actually going to dictate what someone does with their systems; the beauty is having choice. But please, give Linux gaming a chance. I promise you wont be disappointed!

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  17 дней назад

      Well, the OLED *is* better. That's a fact, but it being better doesn't mean the LCD model is bad. Far from it! If the price difference isn't that big in your region - or if you have the extra money - then there's no reason why you shouldn't go with the OLED model. But if you want to save money and still get, like, 80% of the whole experience, then the LCD Steam Deck is by far the best investment.
      The same goes for the ROG Ally. The Ally X is better in every way than the original model, but it's also much more expensive. The fact that these upgraded models exist doesn't negate the effectiveness and overall value of their predecesors. 🙌 Especially now that they've dropped down in price so much.

    I got my Steam Deck in early 2023, and while I am a bit envious of the OLED Steam Deck or ROG Ally, I've realized with time that there is a reason I jumped on the OG LCD Deck as quick as I could: while it's not perfect, it fits my use case more than any other handheld out there. I love to leave things on in the background but I also hate having to worry about burn in or a micro SD card slot dying. While I think the Deck OLED is probably an amazing handheld (I have an OLED ultrawide at home and it's insane), the few games I play that even are HDR compatible I don't really ever play on my Deck. On top of that, I feel like the new color calibration setting does an AMAZING job at making the screen look better, which helped to soften the OLED blow. I also recently got an RMA unit after my left bumper broke and it couldn't be repaired, and I got a revised LCD model instead, that has a redesigned cooling system that's a lot quieter and what seems to be a slightly different screen since the color controls don't change anything between native and sRGB so I think maybe the panel is native sRGB now. All that to say, Valve made it apparent that Deck OLED was like a relaunch for them, and that with the supply chain issues mostly gone, they were able to fully fulfill their vision, but it seems that might also be applicable for the newer units of the LCD variant too! I'm glad to see they're not just giving up on it altogether now that they have a revised model.

      @@CGD.Studio I have a story to tell you, when I was a kid and lived in a small town, I did not even have a computer, I went into some cafe and there I searched up dragon ball game, and the trailer for burst limit came, I was blown away, I still remember the feeling, the intro of burst limit that shows up cruising in a cloud, is so good, I literally felt that I was flying, at that time I had no idea what's even is a PS3 etc, I just dreamt of playing the game, and after 10 years from that day, I cleared an entrance exam with very good marks and got my dream college, the first thing I asked my parents was a PS3 and I ordered Burst Limit, I enjoyed the game so much, teared up a bit, finally my dream was complete, so this game means a lot to me.

      @herrogamer2606 man, that's so wholesome, love it. 🥲 My roots are similar, I started emulating Dragon Ball Z Super Butoden (SNES) back in 2003, and I always ended up finding a way to play each and every single DBZ game, but Burst Limit was the one that got away, and it always pained me cause it looked the most amazing, like a souped up Budokai 3. And I've only now started playing it after, what, 11 years or something. Nothing like a little DBZ to bring you straight back to those careless childhood days (hopefully careless, not everyone has that luxury). RIP Akira Toriyama, what a shame. :/ I'm honestly really happy for you. If only today's games had that old school, nostalgia quality to them, as opposed to being open world cash grabs with ray tracing and a billion side quests.

    I very rarely comment anymore. I fully expect to get shit on when I post this. I'm only making this post to provide an alternative perspective, because I want people to make an informed purchasing decision of a device that is NOT cheap. However, don't just take my word for it. Everyone seems to love the Steam Deck, thus by probability, you will too. Anyway, here goes...
    I hate it, to be honest. I bought the 512GB LCD when it was on sale during the Summer. I've never encountered so much regret and buyer's remorse for a single device I've ever purchased. It's under-performant and performs worse than my 8-year-old Dell Inspiron 7559 (i7-6700hq and GTX 960m). Which is to say, it can maybe pull off PS3 or 360 tier games on low to medium settings fine. I mean, if you live and breathe visual novels and only modestly-demanding JRPGs, it should be generally okay. Don't believe people saying they can make modern AAA games work efficiently. They are using cooked statistics, looking at best-case scenarios, playing games at low resolutions, the lowest settings, and utilizing FSR (which reduces the resolution of every FRAME that is generated while preserving the original resolution). All for maybe 30fps, hitting near critical temperatures on the APU, and like an hour or hour and a half of battery life (OLED would be slightly better due to more efficient processor).
    It's unacceptably large for a device that is marketed as portable, and the buttons also feel mediocre to downright bad. Trackpads are laughably bad, FAR worse than a touchpad on a laptop. It's just unwieldy and uncomfortable in the vast majority of scenarios such that I'd rather not even use it. I brought the Deck out on a plane one time, messed around for twenty minutes trying to play a PCSX2 game, only to hate my entire existence because hardware and software wise it isn't intuitive to play on, especially when navigating the desktop side of things. Needless to say, I busted out my phone and played some PPSSPP, where I had a grand time playing some Persona 2. Nothing more to say on this aspect, too big to be portable and playing on it is unsatisfying and even physically hurts (my middle finger gets caught on the R2 and L2 buttons sometimes).
    Furthermore, while I didn't think it would be that much of an issue at the time, the lack of I/O on the Deck really limits its functionality, portability, and use-case even further. A USB-C, micro SD card slot, and 3.5 jack may seem like a good amount of versatility for a portable device, understand this is a PC, with, ultimately, all the quirks of a PC. In order to actually get a semi-acceptable experience, you effectively need some kind of dock for it (Valve's official one I find to be overpriced). You need a mouse and keyboard be it for changing your controller scheme, tweaking the correct settings, and, especially, doing any kind of actual PC stuff. There really should have been at LEAST one USB-A 2.0 slot.
    SteamOS is Arch Linux minus any of the positives. It only makes the initial install significantly easier, because, well, you don't have to deal with it, lol. You can't make changes to the root filesystem and even if you can, Valve wipes it because they distribute updates as an ISO. Like, yeah, I did manage to disable SteamOS read-only, make myself super-user, and install yay, the Arch User Repository, but all of those changes got wiped on the next system update. Moreover, even with yay installed, Valve decided to strip out all the packaged library headers and left no way to persistently read them, making the VAST majority of packages untrusted, meaning you can't install them. People say it is a tinkerer's device, but I don't see it. Whatever changes you can make, it leans more hacking than tinkering or configuring. No, this isn't "my Deck".
    Also, why choose Plasma as the desktop environment? It's notoriously buggy and unstable. I don't care if it looks cool, I want something that works, like Cinnamon. For example, I encountered so many issues using the Discover app to install or update anything, often requiring me to restart the service in a terminal. This is your main method of installing programs and is a critical feature that can break. No, you can't change DEs, by the way. Better yet, why not, you know, create a DE that actually works well and intuitively with a controller? So, if an issue does arise, I can fix it with onboard hardware easily. Why do I have to be forced into Steam on start-up, as well, which poses problems if you don't have wifi? Sure, there is an offline mode for Steam, but you have to enable it AFTER you fail to connect and deal with a horribly boring and long boot process as it fails to connect.
    Use-case is effectively non-existent, for the reasons mentioned above. If you want a powerful PC gaming experience, get a desktop. "Well, it's not portable, then", then get a gaming laptop. "Then it's too big!", then just use your phone and emulate and/or use one of those streaming platforms like Steam Link, or Xbox and Playstation remote play. Without a mouse and keyboard, the Steam Deck has an even worse mobile PC experience than your phone, the thing you always have with you. "Well, I really want to game on it and it not just be a side-thing", then get a console, be it handheld or at-home, and don't worry about specs and "tinkering". You see, the Steam Deck does a little bit of everything, but it fails to do or be anything. And, as they say, when you try to please everybody, you please nobody. Which sorta leads to the next point...
    You can't even repurpose the thing. It specs are so middling and its hardware so specific (basically a "black-box" of technology like a phone), it can't be used for more high-end applications and more advanced use-cases, like say a NAS or crypto-miner (lol). With that said, it is not completely terrible (pretty much a moderately decent Ryzen laptop), such that using it just as a terminal is wasteful. It is made specifically for its intended use-case (which is highly-specific and niche) and nothing more, so even if you flash the OS, it doesn't fit any other potential role effectively.
    It's a great device on paper. A portable PC experience for on-the-go gaming. However, it made too many concessions, cut too many corners, and didn't put in enough effort on the software-front to make the user-experience intuitive and satisfying. I'd maybe give the Steam Deck a 4/10.

And its just not a complete product its a nostalgia factor of the old days when half life 2 era was a thing lol where we can just tinker and experience as a community that is not just in love with the product but loves the company it comes from and they actually care so you know the support for the deck will be mad crazy.

      Yeah, that's a missed opportunity for sure. And as far as I know they're horrendously overpriced in Scandinavia, too, which makes it even worse. That being said, if you're traveling abroad, you can easily snag one for "cheap" in any EU country. I bought, like, two LCD models and one OLED in Hungary and I don't even speak the language. Some sellers ghost you, sure, but a surprising number of folks respond to me. They want to sell their devices just as much as I want to buy them. 😁

      Ah, I personally wouldn't buy it. Where are you from, how much does the OLED model retail for? I just bought an OLED model for a friend in Hungary, brand new, for 500 euros, and it wasn't the cheapest option either (on a website that's like their tech-related eBay). I checked Romanian prices as well and they're about the same as well (give or take).
      400 for the LCD model is quite a lot nowadays, when Valve sells them for way less brand new (and even less if they're refurbished). You can always buy an SD card yourself should you need one, you can always swap out the SSD easily should you need more space, etc. Those add-ons are nice-to-haves but they're not a necessity. You might as well save a bit more money and go with the OLED model if the price is relatively similar? 🤔

    Sadly even the 64GB model is priced almost the same as the Ally in Norway, and OLED is over $1100 😮 Yikes. It really makes Nintendo Switch at $350 a much easier buy, even with worse screen and performance across the board.

      @CGD.Studio  6 месяцев назад

      Man, what? Norway prices are insane! What are you taxes on tech stuff? You might as well travel somewhere else and buy it used (as I did). The Ally, for that price, is a much better investment.

    Respectfully, This aint a review. Its a fanboing commentary. All i heard is just you over hyping the right steps made and discounting/shrugging off the missteps it had. You seem to struggle to separate subective POV from an objective POV, this wouldnt be a problem if you have set the proper expectations on the title instead of labeling it as a review.

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Ave! Thank you for commenting.
      Eh, I would honestly disagree. Like, fully. I'm about as far from a fanboy as it gets. It took me a whopping *four* Steam Decks to fully get acclimated to its existence, as one part or another always bothered me. And even now, as I'm typing these lines, it's collecting dust. I pledge allegiance to one "entity" only, and that's myself. I think any form of fanboyism is wrong to the extreme. All I care about is getting the most possible value out of a product, the most "bang for the buck," and the Steam Deck, in that regard, is unbeatable. That's just a fact. To get, I dunno, 80% of the ROG Ally experience for less than half as much money (or within that vicinity) is just insane. And for that kind of money, it ticks a lot of the right boxes for a lot of people.
      Why do its prior missteps matter? The ROG Ally was in a much worse state and in many ways is *still* rough around the edges, but it got better. The Legion Go has been out for six months now and it's still nowhere near polished enough. I'm not reviewing a product that has just been released, so there's no reason to view it through the past. I'm looking at it as it is right now, in 2024, so Valve's prior mistakes or oversights and whatever else don't really matter to anyone who's buying a Steam Deck *right now*. It has grown tremendously, Valve actively listens to its community, and the third-party side of things is absolutely insane and tremendous. I'm constantly blown away by people's dedication and the sheer number of ingenious apps and plugins they were able to create for the Steam Deck.
      What consistutes a review, in your opinion? Were you looking for game benchmarks? A speaker test? Geekbench numbers, a Time Spy result? Those things have been covered to death already by everyone under the Sun. This is a two-year-old device. It's not ancient, but it's a known commodity. If I were to do a review of, say, the M1 MacBook Air in 2024, there would be very little reason to cover its power draw in different scenarios as those numbers are just a click away. You get the point. The point of that review would be "tell me if it's worth buying today and whether I'm giving up on any niceties by not going with the latest and seemingly greatest models."
      The point of a long-term review - at least for a smaller channel like this one - in my opinion, is to share a view or an angle that hasn't been covered before. To provide something if not unique then certainly different and worthwhile to those watching. 95% of Steam Deck content on RUclips is just regurgitated. Copy and paste, rinse and repeat. Those videos have no reason to exist, and they rarely, if ever, cover the bigger picture. Everyone just wants you to buy the latest and greatest thing and they rarely talk about devices that have been out for a while because they won't get nearly as many views as those that are novel and shiny. People want to know how it stacks up to the rest of its competitors, two+ years after its release. People want to know what to do with their money, which is always a scarce commodity. There's no need for me to create a 40-minute long video going over every little bit as a) no one would watch it; b) I'd cover the same things that are readily available and, odds are, have been or will be watched by those who might come across this video as well.
      Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this video is perfect or that I covered all possible bases. That's just not true nor would it be possible - no video is perfect and there's always a skipped part or two or three that might provide value to those watching, but you can't cover it all and you can't cater to *everyone's* needs and wishes. This video received a lot of comments (relatively speaking), but no one called it out for false marketing or a misguided or wrong title. You have every right to feel that way, I just see it differently.
      In any case, thank you for watching, and sorry it didn't check all the right boxes for you.

    I got the LEGO upgraded from a lcd deck. The device is great very nice screen and performance but got so disappointed with heat, windows sleep/hibernate, battery life, and most of all the trackpad placements, it is hard to play rts games such as rimworld. Might be buying a cheap lcd as no one is selling the oled in the secondhand market at my area.

      Yeah, lots of good and lots of bad with the LEGO. I think the positives outweigh the negatives, but it's all personal preference. If you can find one for cheap, why not, it could be a great RTS machine on the side whenever you feel like it. :)

      Well, for AAA games the battery ranges from abysmal to meh. You can expect an hour, maybe an hour and a half. It really depends on how much you're pushing it. If you want some really respectable battery life for AAA titles, your only option would arguably be the ROG Ally X.

    Seeing it’s more similar to a ps4 than it is to a ps5, do you recommend it as a primary consoles or secondary to a ps5? I have my ps5 as my primary and Xbox series s as a secondary but hardly touch my Xbox. I mainly play Halo for my multiplayer game

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  6 месяцев назад +1

      Oh if you already have a gaming console, the Steam Deck is a killer supplementary device! The moment you run into a game that can't run as well, you just swap over to your PS5/Xbox. I'd buy one used for less than 300, swap out the SSD if it's a 64GB model and you'll be golden. Although you should definitely check on RUclips whether it's capable enough to run the games you want (there's a bazillion benchmark videos online). I mostly spend my time playing on the couch or in the bed, and it's a joy unlike any other.

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  6 месяцев назад

      Yup, that sounds about right! I mean, the Steam Deck is actually a lot more capable than one would expect, but if it's a AAA game, then you'll be better off playing on a console or PC of some kind. But it varies a lot from game to game. Like, Diablo 4, for instance, runs great, and so does Hi-Fi Rush. Darkest Dungeon 2 as well.

    I disagree on two points. On the point that the steam deck lacks a unique selling point over other devices. The dual touchpads are an amazing and wholly unique to steam deck feature. The other point I disagree on is that Dave the Diver is not an Indie title. DtD is a pixel art style game, and visually shares a lot in common with what is often seen as 'indie' it's disqualified by the sheer fact that it is made by a studio under a publisher, and not an independent studio.

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  5 месяцев назад +1

      Eh, I get what you're saying, but the dual touchpads aren't a unique selling point to the "average Joe" or gamer. There's a reason why CoD has been the best-selling game for the past billion years. :/ Having them is amazing, sure, and there's nothing else quite like it, but that isn't going to matter to the vast majority of people because of the games and genres they play. But yeah, I do get your point, and it's totally a valid one.
      As for the Dave the Diver comment, I know it's not made by an indie dev, I meant more in the sense of its hardware requirements, you can run that on a potato. 😁 I watched the Game Awards last year, I'm well aware of the sh*tstorm that happened with Dave the Diver and its indie nomination. 😅

      @@CGD.Studio unique and mass appeal don’t always go hand in hand. The legion go’s “mouse mode” tries to aim for that mass appeal for mouse and keyboard gamers, but to me it looks uncomfortable as heck, but I love the flexibility of the trackpads on the deck. I know they aren’t something everyone is going to mesh with, or even need additional control options over a standard controller.
