Mumbai has been regularly reminded of the risks that climate change poses to urban areas in India. Extreme rainfall and flooding are frequent during the monsoon season, and the city is also becoming increasingly vulnerable to heat waves. However, these challenges are not unique to Mumbai-cities across the country are grappling with climate-induced crises. The situation is exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure, poor planning, and unregulated urban development.
In response, cities must adapt and climate-proof themselves, although the broader fight against climate change is a global endeavor. Local adaptations and climate-proofing are crucial, with urban local bodies playing a key role in mitigating risks from heat waves, excessive rainfall, and urban flooding.
Yet, implementing these solutions requires both funding and expertise. Many urban local bodies are financially strained and struggle to take on additional projects. Meanwhile, there is substantial green investment available, but a lack of viable projects to support. This gap is what the latest event by The Indian Express, in collaboration with Omidyar Network India, aims to address by facilitating connections and partnerships.
