I'm a bare bones beginner guitar player coming from 10 years of sight reading traditional sheet music. Your instructions with using the frets and note names with their strings is making it so much easier for me to understand. So many guitar lessons out there don't do this at all just playing and I guess expect you to play back at slower speed and just mimic what they're doing. Thanks so much for uploading a lesson with clear instructions on how to play the notes and where to press making it easier for beginners like me to learn reading tabs.
So, playing the line that starts at 0:09... I'm getting the line itself, but adding the open string jangle to it is the bigger challenge. I'm nowhere with that yet....but I'm motivated to figure it out. Sounds so damn good!
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. I've been playing this for years but your lead run on the D and C really spice up the tune. You may already know this, but I believe the instruction and tabbing on the D run are different from your playing. Specifically, on the G string you play 2, 4, 2, 4 slide to 7 whereas your tabbing and instruction show 2, 4 slide to 7.
Hey Mike - Thanks for checking out my videos! I'm glad you were able to take something from this lesson. I'm sure you're right... probably just an oversight on my part! :)
Great lesson Brandon - I've long been a fan of the DEAD but never really learned any of their tunes other than DIRE WOLF - now I know two - cheers mate!!!
How could anyone drop a "thumbs down'" on this? Must be someone who knows absolutely nothing about guitar playing. Everything Brandon puts oh here is fabulous!
good tutorial, but if anyone else was confused that 8:59 didn't sound like in the video: he's not playing 2-4-7 like it's written in the tabs, he's playing 2-4-2-4s7
yeah, this tutorial is kind of crap... he doesn't explain the picking of the higher pitched notes. or at least he still hasn't when he's gone on to the D, so I'm out.
I mean there is a literal video of both his hands. And you can rewind as many times as you need. Sometimes it's worth trying to figure out with trial and error. I get that it can be a bit much though sometimes and easier to find a lesson that suits you more

Hey Brandon, You make this easy to learn, man! Thanks so much for the great tutorial! I really like to listen to this and to play it is awesome! PS. The gurls go crazy for it after a couple of glases of vino!! Hahaha Salutations from London, England. God bless America and your talent for playing and teaching!! Keep it up, for real!!
That’s a hell of a guitar. HD-28 Authentic? I’m browsing lessons for this song and I have the standard HD-28. Love your approach but wondering what strings you typically use on your 28.
@@BrandonJohnsonGuitar I have the same guitar with the same strings on it... Love my 28V....Thanks for the great tutorial...just found your channel, awesome stuff here.
I swear i am playing the notes just like it is tabbed and it sounds like a chimpanzee playing with shoestrings and a cigar box... i am going to take my guitar out the back yard and burn it.
I took lessons from an old bluegrass guy. During the first three lessons, not a note was played - he just spun CDs and taught me to listen. Super valuable! Use your hearing! How many notes do you hear between the main notes of the descending G-scale? Does they sound like down-strokes or up-strokes, or both? Play what you think you hear on your guitar and compare. Keep experimenting until you get it the way you like it. There is no rule that says you must play a tune exactly like somebody else played it.
Excellent arrangement - great video - TAB - so so - it would be helpful for the TAB to have rhythmic values and to accurately reflect what you are actually playing. For example, @ 4:22 you introduce the classic G walk down but the TAB does not show the other notes that you are playing in this measure. I realize that you explain what your playing - but the standard in this very competitive market is accurate TAB with rhythmic values. As noted by another viewer, @ 8:59, the TAB does not agree with what is being played. This is what stands between me and a membership to this site. Best of luck - you have much to offer.

So strange that all that’s left of the haight is a ghost for sale. There are places still where you might encounter Jerry’s spirit, but the pan Handle is just sad these days.
I notice that your tab begins in 4/4 time for the first half, and then switches to 6/8 or something? for the D and C portion. It seems to me that I'm hearing notes during the "D" section that aren't represented, specifically after the hammer-on, it sounds like you play the G string: A B as a hammer-on, then repeat that phrase with the addition of a slide from the B to the D on the 7th fret. It works out melodically when played, but the notation is inaccurate and confusing. No offense, but most writers have an editor for a reason.
Well there is one mistake in the way you play it and how you teach it that makes it sound shitty when i tried to learn it here it is: At the beginning of the d solo flatpicking section where you say to just play the 4 fret 3d string, you actually play a hammer on there, i slowed it down when you play it fast, maybe you could correct that cause it makes a huge difference ✌🏻cheers from germany, from a lad who is pretty much alone in his country depending on flatpicking music in generall

That's insane, wow. I've never seen someone play it so cleanly. Good job!

Idk why but your storytelling reminded me of the song Alices Restaurant Massacare

You must be naturally gifted if you can just skip over Iron Man
Thanks for the lesson, could you do a bluegrass version of Scarlet Begonias?
Exactly the reason I subscribed!
Oh and by the way I believe Jerry would be approving and surprised by your D chord run feels awesome
Grateful Brandon,
Thank-you so very much,

beauty of a song. thank you
Any advice on how to get better at the little strum in between the notes for a beginner? Is it just a down stroke after the pick?

sure the lesson gonna be great but... tell ya story as part 2... thanks god bless... the dead are looking... smiles n puffs
Are you playing a HD-28V ?
Is this is standard tuning? When I play with the song it sounds off
I noticed that in the chorus you got to a C after the D. I've always played it D, Am, C, D. I'm pretty sure that's how the original recording goes?
I think you're right... for some reason I played the C instead of the Am. :D
holy shit
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That chord is Gsus3C8th
c'est vraiment compliqué pour trouver le pdf ?
How about china doll?
Why only fragments ?

Why are so many lessons adjusted for beginners. What if I want to learn it note for note as it’s originally played.
Wondering if it's unrealistic for me as a beginner to play this song without a pick..?

I tried to match your tuning and it doesn't seem like it's in open G tuning
Open G position, standard tuning. Sorry if I didn't make that clear in the video.
Maybe show your hands and the fretboard?!?!?
News flash, this isn’t a beginner tab the way you have it tabbed out
Is this song by The Other Favorites, or the just make the cover?
For Fs sake....
you look like bob dylan

It's Asbury not Ashbury
No it's not. Ashbury is a street in SF. Asbury is a park in NJ.
Great video! My only problem is I don’t see this as a beginner lesson. Maybe it’s just me.
