    I've been practising this sound for a long time, and I managed it halfway just seeing your video!
    The word "halfway" means I now can really do the VIBRATION of the tongue, but the vibration is smaller ones - like Turkic languages - not large ones in Arabic!
    However, I'm still super excited about my progress!

    السلام عليكم
    May Allah reward you and increase you in your knowledge. I hope you accept this critique. The Arabic “ر” does not flap with air. Every Tajweed rule tells you what to do, expect one rule called “تكرير” which specifically tells you not to “roll” or “flap” the ر. Also in your ads you have women who are half naked working out. It would be best if you changed these ads. جزاك الله خيرا.

      Wa alikom asslam brother/ sister,
      Please let me know which ad that is so that I can block it.
      Thanks for your feedback.
      You cannot pronounce ر without تكرير .. simply because flapping is an inherent, indispensable property of the Arabic ر. Saying you should pronounce ر without flapping is like saying you should pronounce the م without letting your lips touch!! Exaggerating in تكرير however is wrong. Indeed. Trilling the 'R' too much while reciting the Qur'an is not good practice, in fact it is called 'takrir'.

      Actually, the Dutch rolling / trilling 'r' is not the standard anymore. The Dutch in the western part of the Netherlands (and students) pronounce the 'r' as something that's hardly recognisable as an 'r' anymore. Listen to 'kinderen voor Kinderen 6 - Ochtendhumeur' here on you tube. Some Dutch find this regional 'slang' snooty. In Limburg (regional dialect) they also don't use a rolling 'r' but one that sounds German. (The Germans use a trilling 'r' but most of the time the 'r' somehow fades as for example 'mutter' which is comparable with the English 'mother'. The 'r' is actually not pronounced: Mothae'.) Example of the language in Limburg is on 'jippe vertelt - Limburgs dialect'.

    Tips from my learning experience :
    STEP 1: First place your tongue completely touching the 'alveolar ridge' and back of the teeth then try to pronounce the sound "zzz..." With vibration like immitating the buzzing sound of bee.
    (This step is to make your tongue edge relaxed and feel the vibration which helps to flapping the tongue)
    STEP 2: After that immediately place only your tip of your tongue with flat tongue then try to flap the tip of the tongue only and make the sound "trrrr" like immitating roaring bike engine which helps to flap your edge of the tongue.
    STEP 3: If you getting used to flapping the edge of your tongue , then proceed to make ' رَ' sound which is slightly similar when you pronounce the word 'Draw". From there try to perfect the ' رَ'sound.
    Hope it helps! In shaa Allah :)

      This is actually a Great start!!! This IS how you should learn it. Gradually. Once you have the "trrr" hold onto that and start practicing words from your mother tongue that have this combination. Example, say "TRRRee" , "TRRRAIN" and so on, till you feel you got hold of this combination. and step by step, you'll be able to separate them from one another.
      Never forget that you tongue is a muscle. When you go to the gym, are you going for that 100 lbs dumbbell first thing? Of course not. you should train that muscle step by step. So be patient, and keep doing your best, and I'll try to guide you along the way as much as I can in shaa Allah.

    Take perro. Where is my tongue for the p? If I say just p, the tip is downward. So, then, after the p, does the tongue tip immediately flip to the the alveolar ridge? For rr, is my tongue tip already at the ridge for the initial very beginning vowel sound of rr? Don't you have to have some "plosive" of air to initiate the tongue vibration? How do I generate the air column needed to vibrate the tongue for rr? There's no plosive. Is it a vowel grunt? Upside down e? How many times does the tongue tip vibrate against the ridge for each rr sound? I remember my old Spanish teacher in HS back in late 50's rolling an rr sound for about 15 seconds, just for a demonstration. My 84 year old brother can make his tongue sound like a tommy gun, dit, dit, dit, dit very fast. So can my ex-wife. I can make dit,dit, dit, but not fast and my tongue has to do it. Not an air column, if you know what I mean. I've been trying on and off for a year or more. Seems to be getting better, but I'm still not sure I'm on the right track.

    I still can’t do it. I have no idea how to get my tongue to flap. It just won’t. I can’t force it to flap. And I don’t know what kind of sound to try and make when expelling air from my mouth. I’m pretty sure that just expelling air isn’t going to produce a trilled r sound.

    So I’ve been able to teach myself how to do the trill, the trouble I’m having is incorporating it into the words. It’s like my tongue goes tense. But the tip you gave of keeping the back of your tongue stiff to support the relaxed tip is definitely helping I think. Just gotta keep practicing.

    Assalamu Alaikum. Do you think it is the same R as in Russian? Like somewhat resembling some sort of a motor machine sound or something lol. But the thing is, that one would do A LOT of movement. It’s so weird how many different R sounds there can be lol

      Yes, I think they are very similar. The Russian R however has too much trilling compared to the Arabic one, but it is definitely a good place to start.

    I find it really hard to pronounce the ر different than the غ ... The last ayah of surah al fatiha is really difficult for me. غير المغضوب عليهم

    • @Arabic101
      @Arabic101  2 года назад +2

      I assume that the technique you use to pronounce the ر is very different from what the Arabic ر does.
      Pronouncing the ر closer to the غ is usually done in French and certain dialects in Dutch, but seeing how you write English, I think you are Dutch. And this is indeed very difficult to use in combination with the غ in Arabic. The Arabic ر uses the tip of the tongue to produce the sound, so combining it withغ would be more possible.
      If you are having troubles reading al-fatiha properly, you can send me your recording and I will try to give you more detailed explanation depending on how far you are. You can do that through our website arabic101.org

    I can make a trilled r-sound with my tongue flat on the bottom of my mouth, and I can move my tongue around and make pretty much any sound that requires the tongue to move, including putting the tip of my tongue against the ridge, which changes the sound, but it's never the tip of my tongue that's vibrating, and people say I'm doing it wrong. I'm feeling pretty helpless.

    I've always had a specifically hard time with the alveolar trill, which is odd because I can already trill anywhere in my mouth but at the alveolar.
    I am able to rear trill, middle tongue trill and tongue tip trill on the roof of my mouth but as i move the tip of my tongue forward towards the alveolar the sound breaks and becomes an ssssssh sound, any suggestions for what I and probably many others might be doing wrong?

    • @Arabic101
      @Arabic101  3 года назад +4

      There are indeed many types of trills, and even more variations of /r/ than I can count. It is like I always say, a matter of training the tongue muscle. This is where I would start if I were you; also try out the tongue training or the force-a-trill technique.. and most importantly start by applying it on familiar words from your mother tongue.
      If you feel comfortable making a short vid on how your articulators move when trying it out, then maybe I can tailor a piece of advice for you. And remember this process can take some time till you get the hang of it.

It only makes me dizzy, but the tip of my tongue won't move. Can't whistle on my fingers either btw. I wonder why some languages have to have sounds that not even all native speakers can produce. :(
