Not everyone can do it. Some people have speech pathologies that prevent them from ever trilling the r. I had surgery on my tongue as a small child, and after 18 years of speaking spanish and living in Latin America, I am no closer to trilling my r's than on day one. Sadly, if you don't get it after a few months, you probably need surgery.
If I were to describe it better, I'd say not so much relax, but remove as much tension, then try to limit the tension during the movement, I'd recommend starting with just getting the movement that keeps from going past that ridge, from there after it starts feeling natural, try it with the airflow.
This just made me angry. I'm not faulting the person who posted this, I'm just very angry that I can't seem to get it and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong
Just put your relaxed/soft tongue in the "D" position (closing the airflow) and as you push the airflow such as to escape the tongue valve, the tongue will flap like a flag creating the Rrrrrr sound
I always wondered why my r's sounded weird/long in english. This makes so much sense. My rs have been made with the front of my mouth. I had never thought of people trying to roll their rs by repeatedly saying r since Spanish was my native tongue (I learned English at the age of five in school) rather than, as you put it, waving your tongue like a flag. This was some wonderful insight for me. Will definitely help me clarify my rs. Thank you.
I finally learned how to roll my rs. here are some tips that helped me learn it fairly quickly. 1. RELAXATION of tongue is very important. This is probably the most important thing imo. What I first did was tongue stretching exercises. if your tongue cannot stretch easily, it will be tense when try let it touch the roof of your mouth. Try putting your tongue behind your front teeth, hold it there and open your mouth slowly. Dont force yourself; if you feel any pain stop and take a break. You can do the same thing but move your tongue left and right. These are the tongue stretches that I did. 2. When your tongue is tense all the time, it will be hard to tell if it is relaxed or not. Go in front of a mirror and stick your tongue out. You will notice it is thin. This is what your tongue is like when it is tense. Now relax your tongue. It should be flat and round. Lean your head back and try putting your tongue to the alveolar ridge. While leaning your head back, look in the mirror to check if it is relaxed(flat and round) , or tense (compact and thin). During any attempts, always keep an eye on your tongue. 3. What worked best for me was just exhaling instead of doing the 'f' sound. My mouth was also doing a smilling movement and it was slightly open. When exhaling, exhale hard enough so that a sound is created. Initially I had to inhale alot and then exhale pretty hard, but after some time my exhales were not as nearly as hard as when I first started. If you arent making any sound (air is just passing through, no vibrations at all) your tongue is not relaxed enough and may be too far away from the top of your mouth. 4. If you have trouble with making a sound, lean your head back further so that your tongue can more easily touch the ridge. At one point, i was lying on my back on the couch because when lying down, your tongue very easily touches your alveolar ridge. This means it can be relaxed more, allowing the air to vibrate the tongue. Once you manage to make a decent sound lying down, try lean your head more forward until you can make the same sound while your head is in its normal upright position. 5. If you aren't sure where to exactly place the tongue, try different places. When exhaling adjust your tongue. Find the place that manages to make the loudest sound or vibrates the most and repeatedly put your tongue into that position. It is about muscle memory, so you cannot learn it immediately. What worked for me was putting my tongue just a bit further back. Once I figured out how to roll my rs, the position came naturally, so I actuallly do not know what my tongue placement is anymore 😂 If you are reading this, good luck with trilling your rs, I hope my tips helped.
The leaning back is what made it possible for me. Thank youuu so much. I was trying it for years. I read so much about different exercises and I never understood how it can be possible have the tongue in the right position and relaxed. Your tip with the leaning back made me finally do it😭😭😭
Why would you need to stretch your tongue to reach the top of your mouth or the back of your teeth? At rest I have to have my tongue rolled under itself if I want my teeth closed and it always touches the roof of my mouth. My tongue touches my teeth for pretty much every letter I say, so not sure about trying a different position, what other positions are there other than relaxed (rolled, touching teeth & roof of mouth) and sticking out of the mouth? Pulling it backwards just blocks too much airflow to get any proper sounds out.
I was able to have a Spanish accent while speaking it and purring my whole life. But within 2 minutes, after 10+ years, I was finally able to start to roll my R's. I never thought this day would come, thank you
For those who aged above 12 who never practicing during childhood need to soften their tongue first..Our tongue before 12 yo is still soft so it is easy to vibrate them. u need to put the tip of ur tongue at the palate of ur mouth gently and dont force it.. if u force it the tongue will become tense and hard to vibrate. Then blow air from ur mouth as hard as u can. The tongue will feels like vibrating if u place them right. I need to do this everyday for one month to soften my tongue so that they can easily vibrate even if i blow air softly
pulse oh do you. well i'm german. never needed it except for singing in a choir lol. unfortunately a bunch of other laguages won't let me get away with this

@@nevrevrbeenmehaha I guess I was lucky. Maybe you can try to look up ( your face look at the ceiling) when you do it, when you look up, your tongue will be quite relaxed, and it should do the R’s 😙
On February 23rd I watched loads of videos, including this one. I couldnt roll my r’s On March 15th i was just casually doing a short rolled r and ended up doing a long one. Since that day, I can roll my r’s until i run out of breath. Here’s what you should try: Firstly, you want to be able to do a single roll, so say TDA (pronounced ‘ta-da’ but shorter like ‘tih-da’) over and over until it makes a rolled ‘Dra’ sound. Then repeat this ‘dra’ sound for some time until you are able to make a very short rolled ‘drrr’ sound, which might just stop after a tiny bit of rolling. Everyday after that, make all these short ‘drr’ or ‘brr’ sounds just casually, more like a habit like whistling or humming. For me, I wasnt trying to do a full long roll, it just became a habit. So everyday from February 23rd until the evening of March 15th, I was doing these short ‘brrr’ sounds and suddenly it lasted a tiny bit longer than normal. So i did it again and i was able to do it even longer. To make it into an “rrrrr” sound without needing a “d” or “b” infront, I basically imagined I was saying the letter “h” infront (which is basically just the sound of breath) so it was like “hrrrrr” which is the same as just “rrrrrr” I kept repeating these longer ‘rrrrrrr’ sounds all evening until i could do an ‘infinite’ one. Now it’s March 17th and I can do those infinte ‘rrrrrrrr’ sounds until i run out of breath. The trick is that once those short ‘brrr’ sounds become a habit, you can do them without thinking, and when you relax and do it, it’ll eventually just become a longer one. Here's the video from which I discovered this method: ruclips.net/video/V9LQDTiDcrA/видео.html PLEASE KEEP UP LEARNING TO ROLL YOUR R’s!! I feel really proud of myself for getting it because I felt so useless and stupid when all the videos I watched werent working. It’ll help you with lots of languages and it’s a cool skill to have.
I am turning 23 this month, and you are the first person that explained this in a way that made sense! I can finally do it! Thank you so much! I thought I was just an outlier and would never be able to roll my R’s! I highly recommend this video!
I can roll my R's now, but it took me 8 months to do so. Fortunately, it clicked for me one day when I tried practicing saying the words "Dramón", emphasizing the "Dra" part of the word. For me I managed to be able to control my R's after practicing saying that word. Hope this can help someone else out there! EDIT: To everyone replying, I'm glad to hear it works for you! You'll be rolling your R's like a pro in no time ;) EDIT #2: Pro tip is to challenge rolling your R's by saying the word "Ramón". Also, I'm so happy to read the comments of your improvements!
try to roll by putting the tip of your tongue on your palate, imagine there is something stuck on the roof of your mouth, play around there, i cannot do it behind the teeth but i can do it this way, not as practial but sounds right
I didn’t even need to watch the video. Just the thumbnail was enough for it to work for me. I’ve tried a few times over the years to get it right and for some reason, this thumbnail just clicked it in for me. Thank you. I’ll probably watch the video to see if I can get a clearer roll because it’s about 50-50 when I try to do it quietly.
I genuinely cry out of frustration when I try to do this 😂 one time in my French class the teacher told me to roll my r and I tried but sounded like I was gagging. Everyone laughed and I was really sad because I tried my best but I couldn’t do it. Still can’t 😔
Don't worry! French R is different to this, french R comes from the back of the throat and is very different to this kind of R. You're kinda supposed to sound like you're gagging.
Alright I don’t know if this might help because I’m not a teacher, but I am a spanish native speaker. I can still do it with tensions in my tongue, it just produces a stronger sound. So I would say the main tip is to not place the tongue too far back. I tried to do it with his steps and he does a weird thing with his lower lip when producing the F sound. I don’t know if every English speaker does it like that, but that stopped me from being able to roll my Rs lmao. So I tried my own way of producing the F sound and then placed my tongue in the way and voilá “frrrrrrrrrr”. I did notice that is is a very specific point in between my teeth and the roof, and if I place my tongue somewhere else it stops working, so try to find the right spot for you. ALSO, very important: not all my tongue is flapping. Like, not even the whole tip of the tongue, it’s just the right side of the tip of my tongue. And if I try to direct the air to the left I stop producing the sound. Maybe it’s the way I learned to do it, but do have in mind that you don’t have to make the whole tongue vibrate. Sorry for the long reply, but I thought this could be helpful.
@@zamooti4505 OH. MY. GOD. I don't know if you'll ever see this, but I took your advice about not making the full "F" sound like he is but a more relaxed one, and IT FREAKING WORKED. Mostly. I'll still need to practice, and I doubt there's any way I can incorporate this into a word, but just that little microsecond of a little trill was thrilling lol. You have no idea how happy I am about this. I am 35 effing years old and have been trying to learn how to do this MY ENTIRE LIFE. You deserve allllll the thank yous, so, yeah, THANK YOU!

I haven't ever been able to do this but I made some progress today! My tip is to remember that the breath has to come from your core instead of your head!! I was trying to practice quietly, but as soon as I remembered to breath with my diaphram the first attempt after came out a lil more trilly 🥰
Same with Latvians.. like I have like heavily rolled r's when I speak cause 1. Braces and 2. Haven't lived in Latvia in ages. But kids in Latvia are having to be taught to roll their r's
I don't understand how you keep your tongue relaxed whilst lifting it up. I can relax my tongue so that it just lays on the bottom of my mouth but in order to lift it I have to tense it. It's like saying flex your bicep without it tensing? I don't understand
punkstjimmyF1 Using your analogy, think of lifting your arm and keeping your hand relaxed. You lift from the shoulder and you can keep your hand completely relaxed. Likewise, you can keep the tip of the tongue relaxed while lifting from its base.
@@andyscott5277 As a Finn with a dialect of especially strong trilled r, I'd say that might be true, but the tension should be as minimal as possible, almost non-existent, so that the tip of your tongue only very lightly touches the front part of your palate, or whatever. Never actually thought about that, but perhaps my tongue most of the time is in the "r-position" when my mouth is shut, so, when pronouncing a word starting with an r-sound, e.g. rääkätä, to torment, I only need to open my mouth and lightly push air through it, without doing anything to position the tip of my tongue! 🥶
YES! I absolutely H A T E it when people say "relax your tongue"! It means nothing to someone who has no idea if their tongue is relaxed in the first place.
True I know that feeling, I was there too bro haha. But you have to keep your chin up because the thing is that we all can do it, see everyone actually innately knows how to do it, so to do it you just have to know how to do it too. Hope this helps ;)
I went to a child doctor from the ages of 4-10 trying to learn this. Gave up on it for a few years. Never knew a random 6 minute video would be the key for me to learn
Yep. i think its officially declared that its genetic. Ive been trying to do this for months cant do it. And there were people trying it for years now so yeah some us are unfortunetly not one of those people with those genetics.
Bless you, I've struggled to do this my entire life but I'm trying to learn Russian right now and after watching this a few times and practicing for a couple hours I'm actually doing it!!! I'm so stoked!
OMG THANK YOU. After following your exercice, I can pronounce the Rs again with ease! Had been struggeling with the R sound but after this video it‘s a piece of cake🎉
GUYS I FIGURED IT OUT. I couldn't do this my entire life but this video finally helped me! The restricted stream of airflow is super important. I realized I had my mouth too open and my tongue too high and the air was just rushing out. Where you put your tongue depends on the shape and size of your mouth. I had to press the tip of my tongue against the back of my top front teeth. The position is very close to the "th" sound as in "this" or "think." The difference is you must completely block the airflow by pressing your tongue against the back of your teeth/gum line. Try to exhale, and feel the pressure against the TIP of your tongue. You want to force the air directly through/between the tip of your tongue and your two front teeth. Back off or increase the pressure from the tip of your tongue against your teeth until you hit the sweet spot where it starts to vibrate or trill. If you hear air hissing out of your mouth you need to block it with your tongue. If you can't push the air out at all, your tongue is pushing too hard. Look for that balance where the air comes out "bumpy." Finally, I strangely find it easier to do when I'm on my stomach, facing the floor. Maybe it helps relax my tongue, I'm not sure, but give it a shot. Good luck!
It's crazy how there's a science behind this considering I've been doing it since I learned how to speak. I never used to say R's with the back of my mouth and often I feel scared I'll swallow my tongue if I do lmao. I love learning how other people perceive things I'm just kind of used to, it's absolutely fascinating!
Wish I was you man, the only way I can do the rolled R sound is with the back of my throat, and it sounds more like purring. It sounds mildly convincing, cause I can't do it with my tongue for the life of me. Pronouncing russian? Yeah, no problem, doing R's? Now that's the bane of my existing. It annoys me to no end cause I want so badly to improve my Spanish, since it was my grandpa's mother tongue. ಥ‿ಥ

@@spanglyyapper3484 I'll try, thanks. It's kinda hard for me cause I live in Brazil, more specifically the state of Rio (the city with the same name is the capital of the state, btw), and in addition to the fact we don't roll R's in portuguese, on my state's regional accent, the RR sound is actually way softer than in the rest of the country, barely spoken even; so I have to go from a sound that I'm used to being soft to it being hard and thrilled, it's kinda hard, cognates don't this make it any easier as well, many words are the same, or almost the same, just with minor differences, so it make my brain glitch.

Same, oh same......
Once I figured out how to roll my rs, the position came naturally, so I actuallly do not know what my tongue placement is anymore 😂
If you are reading this, good luck with trilling your rs, I hope my tips helped.
Omg this literally worked right away
The leaning back is what made it possible for me. Thank youuu so much. I was trying it for years. I read so much about different exercises and I never understood how it can be possible have the tongue in the right position and relaxed. Your tip with the leaning back made me finally do it😭😭😭
W/o the 'f' helped SO much. It sounds like a baby raspberry rn, but its a start 😄 thx
I had to go to the ER due to breaking my jaw from all the tongue gymnastics. JK, but kinda seriously.

I couldnt roll my r’s
On March 15th i was just casually doing a short rolled r and ended up doing a long one. Since that day, I can roll my r’s until i run out of breath.
Here’s what you should try:
Firstly, you want to be able to do a single roll, so say TDA (pronounced ‘ta-da’ but shorter like ‘tih-da’)
over and over until it makes a rolled ‘Dra’ sound.
To make it into an “rrrrr” sound without needing a “d” or “b” infront, I basically imagined I was saying the letter “h” infront (which is basically just the sound of breath) so it was like “hrrrrr” which is the same as just “rrrrrr”
I kept repeating these longer ‘rrrrrrr’ sounds all evening until i could do an ‘infinite’ one.
Now it’s March 17th and I can do those infinte ‘rrrrrrrr’ sounds until i run out of breath.
The trick is that once those short ‘brrr’ sounds become a habit, you can do them without thinking, and when you relax and do it, it’ll eventually just become a longer one.
Here's the video from which I discovered this method:

I can roll my R's now, but it took me 8 months to do so. Fortunately, it clicked for me one day when I tried practicing saying the words "Dramón", emphasizing the "Dra" part of the word. I genuinely cry out of frustration when I try to do this 😂 one time in my French class the teacher told me to roll my r and I tried but sounded like I was gagging. Everyone laughed and I was really sad because I tried my best but I couldn’t do it. Still can’t 😔
I find spanish r harder to pronounce than french r. French r is very airy and gutteral but i just cant get the rr in spanish

Total paradox

Your whole tongue doesn't have to be relaxed, just the very tip.

HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO LIFT YOUR TONGUE WHILE ALSO RELAXING YOUR TONGUE
EXACTLY I CAN'T
Exactly! Doesn’t the act of lifting your tongue necessitate some amount of tension? 🤔
Facts bro
@@andyscott5277 As a Finn with a dialect of especially strong trilled r, I'd say that might be true, but the tension should be as minimal as possible, almost non-existent, so that the tip of your tongue only very lightly touches the front part of your palate, or whatever. Never actually thought about that, but perhaps my tongue most of the time is in the "r-position" when my mouth is shut, so, when pronouncing a word starting with an r-sound, e.g. rääkätä, to torment, I only need to open my mouth and lightly push air through it, without doing anything to position the tip of my tongue! 🥶
It feels to me more like trying to contract the area around the roof of your mouth slightly while also resting your tongue.

Look for that balance where the air comes out "bumpy."
Finally, I strangely find it easier to do when I'm on my stomach, facing the floor. Maybe it helps relax my tongue, I'm not sure, but give it a shot.
Good luck!
