Being Minnesotans the Rocky Mountains and the wildlife that make them their home hold a fascination that is awe inspiring. There is one trail the family calls “the sound of music” the trail ends with a heart stopping view of the fourteeners and you just want to break into the song “ the hills are alive...” one year in late spring we were blessed with a heard of elk that numbered in the hundreds, what a view! They were close enough that we didn’t need our binoculars and too our enjoyment we watched the babies slide down the snowbanks, run back up and slide again with their ever watchful mothers standing by. While we watched the antics of a child having fun in the snow my niece made the comment that the elk are just like us humans, basking in the warmth of the spring sunshine and taking advantage to enjoy the last of the winter snow. Thank You for bringing that memory back to me with this painting and letting your viewers know that they are not just animals with no thoughts but are actually just like us humans with social structures, different languages and culture.
I love your commentary, thank you for sharing! I have had one experience being on the ground in a wild area about 5 meters away from a lone Eland bull. I remember what impressed me the most was not his enormous bulk, how I could feel the ground shake with each step as he passed by - but the tangible sense of being regarded by this intelligence so different from me. It must really be special to work towards revealing such animals' experience of their world, their hidden life. I'm glad you have such an articulate brush, to bring these stories to life 🙂
I met this guys in 2017 evening summer and that was the amazing time of my life, in the backside of my house.... watching chuck videos with those 3 tree straight to me in the fields watching sunset!.. I miss these days after when that 3 trees cut down sunset was never be the same again 🙂 but when i start watching his videos that days with trees come back!
You can just feel the glowing atmosphere through the painting, it's beautiful and so serene. Also, always love to hear your story about the painting aswell.!
As you finished the story and the painting, I started looking for the “breath” of the elk, and there it was! Your attention to detail is spectacular. I seem to always fall short in my paintings, at least in my opinion. You do set a standard which all artists should learn from. Thank you so much!
Some would watch the elk but you have endeavoured to really SEE them and it seems as though this influences your paintings, not just the detail but the emotion you weave into each brush stroke. A beautiful interpretation of a natural vista transporting the viewer. Stunning story telling.
Chuck, you have an amasing gift of, not only, observation, but also of understanding. Listening to your commentary, while watching you paint this phenomenal piece of artwork, gave not only each elk an individual life and personality, but also the trees, mountains and each aspect of the landscape their own personalities as well. Always a pleasure to see a new painting from you!!! Your commentaries are as deep and profound as your paintings, too. Thanks!!!
I've followed you for many years now and have watched you early on struggling with compostion mostly but you kept on with it till you could put on canvas what you saw in your mind.. That is not easy to do. You are an incredible artist and you put all your feelings into your paintings. Don't ever change and when I struggle to paint landscapes in realism then I always go back and watch your videos and know I'm not alone with frustration during the painting process. It seems to come easy to you now. I love your work, Thank you for telling your story keep them coming.
Chuck I am amazed. I have watched your explanations. I still cannot even think of doing it. Love your photos and paintings. Thanks for sharing, Santa Mike
Mr. Black, your work is breathtaking. You have such an ability to capture light, warmth, shadows and detail in such a way it transports us to this beautiful place you have recreated from the imprint it left on you. Truly amazing!
I can't believe the detail, the mountains in the distance with snow strategically placed in just the perfect spots. The Elk so real you can count the hair on their necks. I get lost in your paintings, they grab hold and draw you in looking for something you missed the first time you looked at the piece! Awesome job Chuck!
Your passion and dedication come thru brilliantly, Chuck! Thank you for naming the Creator, the author of your gifts as well as your passion for sharing the beauty and miracles of the natural world. The painting tips you share are additional bonus for me as a beginner in my 70's, and your transparent and authentic way make you an awesome teacher in many ways about the process as well as content and product. God blessed us well by sharing you with us. Thank you! And God bless you and yours with health, joy, and peace. I am full.
Means so much to me to know all of that Lynn, The pleasure is all mine and I'm just glad that others can enjoy and find help in it. You are one of my three lucky winners for the print giveaway. Send me an email with a mailing address and I'll get the print in the mail. Congrats and thank you again! Same to you
I guess the humans tend do underrate animals in general. Maybe because they don´t communicate or act like we do, maybe because we are often so far away from the nature. Once we do look more closely, we understand better that we are a part of nature and not superior. Aside that I so love your work and your attention to detail. Great great work!!!
My early years growing up on fish hatcheries in Arizona helped me to love nature. I now love to paint and appreciate the tutorials you provide. Thanks so much!
This made me cry.. So beautiful and with the story as well. I really look forward to travelling and painting scenes like this from my own adventures 🌸 Thank you Chuck
As I watch this painting I am so captivated by your voice and the story you tell of your adventures. You are bless by God with your God given talent. Wish you and significant other the best of safe travels. Love your new sharing of these videos and I signed up as soon as I found them. Thanks so much my young friends.
I try to search for words to capture what I feel while watching you paint. It’s exciting to see your paintings come to life. This elk painting is exquisite. Thank you for sharing your beautiful paintings and your process with us. I particularly enjoy hearing the stories and facts about wildlife on your journey.
I am always amazed at the masterpieces you create! Would love to have one displayed in my home. Thank you for sharing your talent, knowledge, & anecdotes about the regions and animals you paint. I love to hear your stories. Blessings to you!
I just bought the print of this. It reminds me so much of my home back in Alberta. From the elk, to the mountains to the clouds in the sky. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences in your art and with your videos. My husband and I absolutely love your work. Hugs to you and Erica from the UK!
I swear, every painting you reveal is better then the one before, and I don't think you could get any better. But you do. You're absolutely amazing Chuck.
Chuck, long time no see is true, so good to see your email this morning. And this new painting is beyond words, you have a gift from above. I love your work...
You are amazing! I started to paint around half year ago. I started because you inspired me. I watched almost all of your videos so far. I am not even close to that good like you, but I can learn a lot from you. I just hope, I could be ever at least half of talented like you. Thank you to share your skills with us!!! 🙏
You are so very blessed! God has definitely gifted you with an amazing talent. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, insights, passion, and skills. If you ever have the opportunity, you should visit Benezette, PA, the heart of Elk County! The elk herd is so amazing! This little town is inundated with elk every evening. On the sidewalks, in the yards and parking lots....you can almost get close enough to touch the. I highly recommend Medix Run Lodges, secluded in the mountains, as a place to stay. Their cabins are incredible!
I remember a few years ago when , I traveled to my home state where I grew I went to do a Plein air painting in the woodland era where I had grew up there were a lot of spruce pines and maple trees , and a small cliff to where you could overlook the forest of trees , a large 12pt buck either white-tail , or mule stood poised on top of the cliff and he bellowed in a loud tone , about 25 deer gathered at that spot before they traveled on this was around 10.30 am in the morning , I took a few photographs of this moment , there were mountain cougars in this area as well. great painting well done.
Chuck what a fabulous story and a beautiful painting. Your an absolutely amazing Artist. And as with all of your paintings it needs no words your paintings speak for themselves.
I would love to one day experience an elk call in person. Your newest painting really captures and conveys your love for the area and this beautiful animal. Your story telling in both the art as well as your description of it makes you one of my favorites. Amazing work
Thanks for a most stunning painting. I could almost hear that bull elk calling there... I think this painting is one of your best. You are an amazing artist, putting a lot of emotion into your work, which the viewer can feel.
Beautiful painting Chuck!! Watching you create your paintings is very relaxing and inspirational!! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent with us!! Looking at the painting I can imagine the elk bugling!! Thanks again!!! Your work is awesome!!
WOW!! just WOW! i just saw this video as my first from you, and it absolutely took my breath away! i have started my journey into the world of fine arts this last year, and i can only aspire to be as talented and skillfull as you! thank you!
Beautiful, Chuck. I too worked for a few wildlife agencies on the fisheries side. We as people tend not to give animals the recognition they deserve. They’re smarter and more complicated than we give them credit for. Thank you for the elk story! I remember while hunting in Wyoming, the sound of the elk bugle was the most amazing. Your talent is an inspiration.
You have always been my biggest inspiration. I watch your videos every time I paint and I have grown so much as an artist thanks to you. Love love your videos!
Dude, you are by far my favorite artist. Thank you for inspiring us and sharing your work
You're paintings capture the world as it is in our minds, something no camera could ever do.
Actually this video was taken on a device called Camera
He kinda destroyed you tbh...
He paint realistic from a photo, no personal input at all.
You all have a very slim grasp on art if you think it is about copying a photograph
It was Recorded with a camera tho and also your*

This "new" style you have used in your recent paintings really brings out more of the wilderness aspect to your paintings! I'm all for it!
So fun!
I love your commentary, thank you for sharing! I have had one experience being on the ground in a wild area about 5 meters away from a lone Eland bull. Billions of years of evolution takes exception to your simplistic understanding of “god’s creations.”
Love hearing another person inspired by deep understanding of animals. The painting techniques you share are also appreciated!
The way you speak about your experiences and how you perceive life is truly inspiring. Keep it up king.
What a wonderful story. You are blessed. Thank you for sharing.
Montana is an unbelievably beautiful place. Its rare that even actual pictures do it any justice, let alone artwork. Well done sir

You can just feel the glowing atmosphere through the painting, it's beautiful and so serene. Also, always love to hear your story about the painting aswell.!
For someone who's biggest passion is wildlife and the outdoor's, and not painting, he's a super painter.
Your story, the process and the finished painting, literally took my breathe away...thank you for sharing!
I like your magic paint brush! It appears to change color and never needs redipping!
Always enjoy watching you create little vignettes with your paintbrush.
Taking myself and others into places we would not otherwise get to go.
As you finished the story and the painting, I started looking for the “breath” of the elk, and there it was! Your attention to detail is spectacular. I seem to always fall short in my paintings, at least in my opinion. You do set a standard which all artists should learn from. Thank you so much!
I had to turn the sound down tbh lol
Let's appreciat he did it with no ads and we could enjoy the whole masterpiece?!

Beautiful painting, I enjoyed the back story. I was lucky to see a big male elk in Banff National Park, close up! Something I'll never forget.
Chuck I am amazed. I have watched your explanations. I still cannot even think of doing it. Love your photos and paintings.
