I wish painting gave me contentment. It does on one hand and on the other hand it makes me frustrated and tests my patience.. im a instant gratification personality and I always work ….nothing seems to ever be play unless I’m watching my dogs run and play or some great movie…book. Painting is work and lots of learning curves. I also take it too seriously! Id rather work on a thing that results in a fine vessel of some useful kind or useful somethings. To me there is nothing useful about a painting on the wall more than mere decoration and I know how much work goes in to some of them….yet deep inside it seems trivial in the grand scheme of thing.. don’t know if that’s right. Im hoping it’s just a phase….sounds like depression too…. Everybody has different relationship with IT. painting….painting is the harder of any art I tried. Just need to know more about it. Acrylic to me is only half the process… it has some very frustrating ( to me) things about it.. it also alarms me when many painters settle in to a same thing different subject style. So called trademark… is that a goal? Why? Should it be?

As a veteran drawer and a neophyte painter this video was a better teaching tool than Bob Ross. Not that Bob Ross isn't great at edifying people how to paint. This video was perfect for me. To see you mess up and paint through your error and find what you were looking for. To see the camera zoomed in and see you mix with color and experiment, to hear your process. I met my favorite artist Donato Giancola, he told me he took pictures of his family on the beach for his paintings. I'm thirty days into my big canvas painting and your video is guiding me. Thank you so much!

It's wonderfully rendered and compositionally well constructed. One thing I think that might have added to the atmosphere of the piece is to add a tinge of those pinks and oranges in the clouds into the highlights, particularly in the foreground. I really feel like the cowboy's shirt could've used colored highlights. That wouldve helped anchor the characters into the scene. If that sun is setting and glowing pink then it's got to be casting colored light. Someone once told me that plain white highlights can look flat or dull, and instead warm or cool colors could be used to create more ambience and believability. Just a suggestion to think about on future pieces. Well done!

Definitely. This was completely new territory for me. I built this painting from around 40 different photos with light coming from that many directions. There is absolutely room to improve in this piece, but at this point, I’m still learning. I plan to do more of these western style paintings soon. I hope to learn more about lighting, temps and shading with color instead of just white.

I want to start trying to get the depth and pop I see in your painting and as well as some of chuck blacks but when I tried oil I had the same frustrations with the never drying and ended up boxing the oils away and throwing away the painting to do in acrylic. I would love an explanation or a video that explains how you work your mediums to get that color to pop and mix well. Thanks.

What is art? Art is story. All art is story. A photograph of something is the thing itself. The painting is the story of it. Story was the first art form and all art forms have that foundation. A story is a shared experience. All art is a shared experience. We need art because we need story because we need that shared experience.

Had to laugh w every sentence you uttered, Chris. "Hey! This guy is me, lol!"
Three days ago I finished a thousand word intro to a self-help book on my especially unique methodology for surviving a debilitating stroke. Mine left me paralyzed and bed-ridden. Doctors told my family it would be wise to start preparing for the worst. They admitted they shouldn't say anything but they felt obligated to tell them at best I had a week to live. As of April 17th, it's been sixteen years. My sisters had told me what they said. The result of that? Three months later I walked out of said hospital 85% recovered. That wasn't the methodology, but it was a very effective stimulus toward my actions and intent.
Helluva job, by the way. CS. I am in agreement with everything you've stated. It's uncanny. So far I've accumulated stuff... slowly isn't the word for it... lot's of stuff... while observing and learning.. it's really about the doing though, isn't it? I now have assembled almost everything to start and finish a painting in each and every kind of medium. No lie. My plan is to illustrate the book myself, and after hearing your innermost thoughts and watching you work, I think I'm finally ready to begin. You are an impressive guy. The irony is that all I really know for sure about the book is which illustrations it's going to need.
Thanks for this, Chris. You have a great, mom. Treasure her for her insight and her ability to look beyond the pale and into your soul. I will be back.

From the way you started out the video to the detailed shots of you painting to the cometary. The atmosphere was incredibly relaxing yet enticing and it really put some thoughts into motion for me.
I have for some time now been wanting to start painting and very recently did something about it. Watching you paint like this, the painting itself and how it came along, has given me so much motivation and patience about the process.

Chris, definitely your best non-music video ever. I make that distinction for a reason. Something unique comes out of you when you're playing and/or singing, it's spiritual. It's the work of art. A much harder bar to reach in a video about creating visual art where the goal is to accurately describe feelings and processes. That being said, this video is astounding. Perfect to it's purpose, revealing of your mind and heart. Showing the result of the courage to change, and change again. Intended or not it creates a very personal connection with you, when I think about it, a very Christ like thing to do. I could go on but I won't. Brother, you hit this one out of the park. I hope creating this video brings rightful confidence, pride of the work God has/is doing in you, and Peace. Thank you Chris.

Wow! Chris this is in my eyes a true masterpiece! Your story in the narration is truly touching and inspirational to all. I have always been interested in Drawing and painting from a very young age. My first experience with oil paints and canvas was much like yours watching reruns of Bob Ross and becoming inspired by his narration throughout his on screen tutorials. However I have never had that ability too bring out the depth and realism in my paintings. I put down the brush quite a few years ago now however your video has truly inspired me to pick up the paint brush again and this time create my own scene rather then copy an image or a scene from a photo. Persistence is the key and I think that learning to make changes on your canvas and paint over something you are not happy with is the true experience. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to seeing many more of your creations.

There’s SO MUCH meaning in that painting, and what it so beautiful is that the meaning can be different for every person viewing it. You know you are truly an artist when you can evoke such a strong emotion from what you put from paint to brush to canvas. I’m grateful for the journey you took me on with honest narration and the peacefulness of watching you perfect your craft.

I just don't understand modern art especially when someone paints a single black dot on a white canvas and critics say they absolutely love it. There's so much snobbery in the art world these days leaving very little room for wonderful pieces like this.

Your hands are a gift from God for the rest of us. Your mom and the man who commissioned the Stearman both deserve our thanks.

It's beautiful! I've recently started wet on wet landscapes. Watching Bill Alexander, and Bob Ross. It's a wonderful escape from reality for a while. I could never draw very well, but I have found that I can do those types of landscapes.
